EVH Stealth Vs the Victory Kraken mkii
Honestly there is VERY little difference between the two. A looper was used to record the separate tracks. Can you tell a difference? The differences are subtle... comes down to features.

Inside the Suhr PT15 - and my opinion vs SLO30

So... we look inside the PT15 and then compare it to the SLO 30 which is much more affordable. I was surprised!
Is it Okay to NOT like the SLO30?

Sure it's okay, because tone is subjective, if it sounds good, it is good... but why would anyone NOT like the SLO30?!?!

Where is the Suhr PT15 Amp!?!? Pete Thorn Signature 15W

so 3 or 4 years ago Mr Thorn made the rounds, demoing his amp like a mad man, but sales since have been flat - can someone tell me why? When I do come across a rare forum comment, it's heralded as "one hell of a great amp!" so why then aren't they more popular?

Demon FX Dual Gun Overdrive review - yep, it's good!
The ribbon cable is routed unfavourably. A no-go above the capacitors. This could cause problems after a while.
I suppose it could, I wouldn’t have minded a bit more spacious layout, but still not nearly as tight as a Mesa… you’re lucky to even get a probe between the components!
Slut filing nuts. Thanks for your help 😂
So. 1. Do you still have this amp with a 12"? If so, how did your power setting usage change with the larger speaker? I'm under the impression that 5W can't drive a 12" speaker properly. I'm thinking about doing an external 12" cabinet vs what you did.
Yes, I still have this amp and LOVE it. The 12” is still in there and living large. A 5W amp has no problem driving a 1x12 or even a 2x12, the resistive load is the same regardless of 1, 2, or 4 speakers. It’s an amazing little amp imo. I own other more expensive amps like Stealth, SLO30, Invective but if they made this DSL5 in a head version, I’d have one of those as well - awesome.
Can you tell me if there is a delay between modes when switching with the 6 channel switch? Thanks!
I’ve since gotten rid of the beast but it seems I do remember that there was, almost like it didn’t switch until the button came back up. Annoying if you need to switch on a dime.
Does it have the line out feature? Like the blues jr? In the back
Yes, it’s the “send” part of the effects loop.
I see you had at least the JEL 20 for a bit and the Little Sister from Friedman. Is there one that you prefer over the other and why? I do share the same concern of Friedman not having the boost channel for the JEL not being on a foot switch but it seems to be a bit more versatile to me as a whole in contrast to the Little Sister. Both amps intrigue me but dont know for sure which one i would choose since i dont fiddle around too much with the settings anyway once they are set to warrant the need for versatility. I do record a lot at home, so having so versatility would be nice but if the Little Sister is more than capable of getting the sounds i want, i would just go with that amp. I like AC/DC style sounds which I hear the Little Sister handles easily but i do like Van Halen style tones as well. Dont play too much modern metal either so not sure if i really need that much gain anyway.
Well… for the money you could get a Tweaker 15 to cover the AC/DC stuff (Surprising how much it sounds like the Little Sister) and a 6L6 Stealth to cover the VH tones, but if you’re sold on Friedman I’d probably side with the JEL, it’s just got more tonal variety imo. The Little Sister does have 3 gain levels but it’s all for the same, singularly voiced channel. I went as far as adding a V2 Hot Mod to my Sister but it still wasn’t quite right for Dio, VH, 80’s metal type stuff. It was also a bit ‘woofy’ which prompted a bright cap/bass cut mod. The LS is very much a classic rock and blues machine. Good luck
@@oldguyjammin9732 thank you for your insight. I actually just may take a look at the Egnator amps. Always seen th around but never gave them a look
@@AntmanFelix - I’ve had a few Rebels and Tweakers, I’d sell them then miss them and pick up another… currently on my 3rd Tweaker 15 but won’t be selling this one. Choices like you’re having to make are sometimes really hard. With the money you’r talking about it may be best to get both and pay to return ship the one you decide not to keep. Happy New Year!!
Boss Katana Head Gen 3 vs the spark 2. Which one would you get?
I’d probably go Spark 2, they are super fun and absolutely great for practicing or small jams. The only real benefit of the Katana head is that you can plug it into a big cab and crank it… if that’s not desired than Spark all the way.
I'm considering getting either: 1: EVH 50w (el34) 2: Engl Fireball 25w 3: Kraken (the lunchbox one) Not sure which one to choose. For both small gigs and home use. I like the portability of a physically maller rig, so the Engl/Kraken got a headstart. They all sound very similar to my ears, so I might just go with Engl for more features for the money (power soak, silent recording, built in noise gate, etc)
The Engl is a really nice amp, beautifully built with support people that get back in touch with you. It wouldn’t quite get hairy enough for me so I parted ways with it, the Kraken and Stealth have a certain aggression that I really like. Good luck \m/
Kraken sounds like the 5150 with more Mids.
You’re right, I noticed on playback that the ‘red’ channel on the Kraken was more mid present… probably nothing an EQ adj wouldn’t eve out. Super nice amp and ‘dfferent’ but the Stealth still reigns supreme imo.
Nice riffing at 11:44 What is that??
The Stealth sounds great 👍 👌. That would be my choice.
thank you for the video. It seems it will be the same as Marshall DSL1CR but it has the digital reverb..
Probably pretty darn close… check it out though, the DSL 5 and DSL 40s were markedly different from the latest models. The older 40C was really brittle and harsh on the Ultra channel unlike the 40CR.
I own both of these amps, as well as their 100-watt counterparts. The Soldano SLO-30 and Suhr PT15 are not direct competitors, as they are designed with different purposes and tonal goals in mind. While both are high-quality amps, they have distinct tonal differences. A comparison highlighting their differences might have been a better approach than a "versus" video.
that’s a good idea, figuring they’re both “Marshall styled” amps I figured they’d both operate about the same way. The struggle I had with the PT was the need to re-EQ between channel changes, where as with the SLO I seem pretty happy from tone to tone to tone, needing only to adjust the presence knob and hitting the bright switch as I move from a Strat to a much darker EVH Wolfgang. Appreciate the input though - think we’ll put a pin in it 🙂
I think the EVH sounds better anyway.
Probably why I kept it. Appreciate your two cents \m/
Hey OG, they both sound great, so I guess it comes down to features and build quality, and looks lol! Hope you and the family have a great Christmas.
Well said! Thanks for the well wishes and you as well.
I think most modern amps, like the Marshall JVM for instance, with channel switching, digital reverb and so on have lots of IC’s on the board.
Marshall in particular, others like Engl or Soldano don’t have as many. Doesn’t seem to hurt the reliability however \m/ Marshalls have a unique tone imo that make them a great addition.
Mr Ewert! It’s me Diego in 1st period! I found your channel and it looks amazing! I wish the best for you and your channel because I can tell you love making these videos!
Thanks for chiming in Diego… So many people “drop in” without saying ‘hello’ \m/ see you soon! And Merry Christmas!!
I hear the most difference in the RED channel, but I think that could be accounted for with an adjustment to the MIDs. Pretty much the same amp imo.
Not enough of a difference to my ears to bother buying the Victory, especially when you've also got the Soldano. The differences in all these amps are so minute that unless you're getting an awesome deal on it it's just a waste of money imo.
Both great amps my EVH 50watt 6L6 is by far the amp I’ve owned the longest 8yrs I think for whatever that’s worth and that says a lot as we all just burn through amps over the years. Very satisfying amp
DUDE! Yes... the 'burn through' speaks to the law of familiarity and how we get "something different" just because it's different, rather than because it is GOOD, or Better. The Kraken is really good, but the king of amps is still the Stealth... imho ;-)
I'm looking forward to the demo! How do you compare with the Engl fireball 25? does it sound good at bedroom level?
Yes, the Fireball is a really nice, Marshall type amp that sounds great at lower volumes. While the Fireball just didn’t quite have enough hair for me, this Victory amp has plenty. My comparison of the Victory to the Stealth really surprised me cause they are pretty much identical!! Just a few very subtle differences.
I like this pedal used on the clean channel. Then kick it on.
it’s one of my favorites for sure, thanks for chiming in \m/
If the Resonance was engaged, the Marshall would have really come to life.
Perhaps, I didn’t engage it because the Friedman doesn’t have a resonance. And I’m not sure what it is about the Marshall resonance, but I really prefer to have it off…? Maybe because the amp is not particularly ‘tight’ anyway and adding resonance just makes more ‘flarppy’… not sure.
I just completed this without doing a bias, just added in a 12inch creamback G12M speaker. Do not use a dremel or jigsaw. Instead use a chisel and hand chisel out the slot, start with a small saw blade and start chiseling the bottom slowly. I made it nearly perfect with just a small hole on the bottom. Take your time with this process
Time Shmime! Rip into that thing and get it done, lol you’ll never get rid of this amp anyway cause you’re gonna love it. Absolute BEST low wattage amp out there… seriously though, I appreciate your comments :-) you happy with the result?
@@oldguyjammin9732hey thanks for your reply, i was looking to swap out tubes but didnt know which one to use. Which tube did you end up using again on this amp that had good results? I was considering a 12ax7 EH. Im not into heavy metal but more classic overdriven tones. I still love the way it sounds regardless when I cant crank my DSL40C
@@solderbuddy - 90% sure that I went with a JJ 12AY7, love that tube cause it allows you to crank the Master and helps get rid of a bit of the fizz factor. Makes the gain way more useable imo \m/
Great job man, that invective sounds great on the intro segment! How would you say the invective mh compares to the 6505mh in your experience?
The 6505 has a lot more ‘fizz’ or upper end sizzle than the Invective, where as the Invective is tight, tight, tight. The Invective has lots of great tonal features as well like the gate, boost and tight function that are all switchable - NICE! Using the tight allows for a great crunch to hard rock tone and when you switch it off you end up with a great lead tone. It’s a very cool amp. The clean is ‘meh’ and there are certainly better options out there for blues and classic rock but for tight metal type tones, it’s a banger!
These bright cap mods are added to the PREAMP volume control pot, correct? My JCM 800 2204 is a kit, so I dont have that pcb with a pot on it shown in the video, so when I am hearing volume pot, I was confused.
Yes, in this case the bright cap(s) go across the pre-amp volume pot. I’m thinking back to my Friedman Little Sister bright cap mod and I believe in that case the cap went across the master volume. A person can try both and see what works best for them, the principle is the same. The Friedman had separate pots NOT mounted to the PCB which made experimenting very easy cause all the lugs were exposed and easily accessible with alligator clips :-)
Great, thanks for that fast reply. BTW, the "sick" sound comes across great on this end and I actually listened to the guitar playing (instead of skipping over it) and enjoyed it. I'll experiment with these bright cap mods on this JCM 800 2204 kit I'm building.
You're going to see which one sounds better or hear?
Hopefully HEAR of course, but because so much is lost in UA-cam, you may not… see what I mean?
Blackstar is less fuzzy and more defined. Shit I have to buy one again. Thanks😅
Haha, know what you mean, I’m on my third Tweaker 15 and am NOT selling this one :-)
the parts look cheap
I was disappointed with the pots, but everything else is nice.
Have one, love it! Doesn’t do crunch great though. There are better amps for that. But it does high gain and clean very nice.
Well said \m/
Can you describe sonically how this sounds compared to uses the amps gain switches? thanks
It’s very similar to using an overdrive through the front of the amp. For example, if you like this amp (or your amp) but always use an OD to boost it, you could use this and free up space on your pedal board.
You don’t play too well
I do all right, but thanks
I think what might be happening with the 2x12 is that with two speaker cones, you have a greater surface area moving the air in front of the amp. Generally, if you increase the volume of the air being moved, the lows and mids tend to become more prominent relative to the top end. Because our ears are more sensitive to the middle of the frequency range, we perceive those sounds as being "louder" (hence a mid boost from a tube screamer can make your signal "pop out" from a mix). However, the speakers themselves are only operating at 2.5W each, rather than one speaker at 5 W. As a result, the actual *pressure* of the air being moved is not really all that different from the 1x12 and thus the decibel reading is basically the same. In essence, although you've increased the volume of the air being moved, you're not hitting it as hard as you would with the 20 W 1x12.
I know that more speakers always ‘sound’ louder :-) but you’re right.
name of song at 1:48 ?
Thanks for the inside look. I'm looking forward to the demo. AFAIK, all electronics use lead-free solder in compliance with RoHS, REACH, and other chemical restrictions. I suspect the voltage comparators are used in the channel switching circuitry.
I supposed you’re right, from what I read a comparator normalizes variable inputs, so good call there. I hadn’t noticed lead free in US amps like Friedman, etc but did read that because of the higher melting point, lead free solder actually produces stronger connections. Funny comment about “lead free soldering tips”… go back to using leaded :-) Stay tuned!
I really like the A channel's gain's reduction by using ECC82 and ECC81, I have to try that through my humbuckers SG and hear the results, very useful video, thank you. 13:01-13:04 (ECC82) and 14:18-14:28 (ECC81) sounds absolutely pleasing to me, much more vintage early hard rock sounding compared with the stock 11:47-11:53 (ECC83). I think I like ECC81 most of them all. Or maybe ECC82? 😆 Well, both are absolutely gorgeous for me and definitely better sounding than the stock. What a super easy and useful mod. Many thanks.
You got it! Happy tube rolling \m/
Demonfx is great. value of money
Kind of hate to take advantage of it, but YES THEY ARE. Sure beats $300 for the same thing.
Any idea where to get the fuses for the power tubes ? I just got one of these amps new and like to have backups in case needed..I have looked for some that the manual specs and not found any yet..but will keep looking.
I’d think you’d be able to just look them up based on Voltage and Ampere rating. Mouser Electronics, Digikey, Amplified Parts, etc.
Great video! I was considering buying one, but I'm hesitant to deal with a rose.
Floyds are easy enough, especially if you block them out. I’d totally recommend the EVH Standards over the Specials however. Same electronics and much more comfortable.
crap amp with those solid state parts, get a hiwatt and get some style.
Of course everyone is entitled… Marshall has used similar PCBs for decades, even in flagship models like the JVM410 and 205. They’re pretty darn dependable.
👍❤️🤘
Ones handmade and ones factory produced.
True - I did end up selling the Friedman after having it for quite a while. I needed a bit more gain, not that the thing doesn’t have enough, but not quite the same ”type” I like. I also recently got a SLO30 and it’s everything the Friedman was and more. Buyer Tip… the Tweaker 15 is surprisingly close in tone to the Little Sister \m/ I’m on my third Tweaker, not because they fail but rather, I’d sell it, then miss it, get one, sell it, then miss it so bad I’d get another, lol. Not selling this one! The Friedman is nice for sure, AC/DC and classic rock all day!!
@oldguyjammin9732 which one was louder
@@taxationistheftmemes - the Friedman is louder than the Tweaker 15, but not louder than the Tweaker 40 :-) or Rebel 30. If you’re looking to play loud those two are worth a look… for that sound. Egnater amps sound best loud imo.
Which one is louder
I've been considering moving to this from an MG30FX. What i dont like is there's only 2 channels, and no crunch. How do you get a good, classic crunch on this amp?
I found that using a 12AT7 tube in socket 1 and using a “M” Creamback - G12m65 both helped, but start with the tube to save a bunch of dough. I like the crunch I get from running the gain really low on the ultra channel rather than cranking the classic channel. But it takes pedals really well too and you can also get some great crunch tones from a good pedal on the classic channel. It also responds well to volume adjustments on the guitar, lots of good tones. Great amp for the affordable price. If you play crunch 80% of the time, check out a Tweaker 15 if you can easily. Strikingly similar to the much more expensive Friedman little sister \m/
So true....... sounds sooooooo much better. I'll take it. Hehehehehheheh Thanks for the video, helped me out.
This amp sounds really great - don't know what you're smoking
I don’t disagree, just think you can do better for the price and thought it hilarious that the marketing line was “pick me up” rather than “play me”, lol. The MiniRec is even lighter \m/
You're a great player. I like seeing (and hearing) these affordable Les Pauls. I have a red studio that was always really enjoyable. Then I took it to a luthier and wow, what I got back is a dream machine. Got the guitar for $700, later spent another $100 for some blemishes and a pro setup. To me at least, it feels and sounds like top of the line.
That’s awesome, glad you found someone who does quality work. Nothing better than an inspiring instrument, nothing worse than an annoying one. Heck of a deal you secured \m/
I have 2017 tribute, mahogany neck, same pups. Love it sounds great, frets are wearing down a d the pcb board/ pots are failing..I play a lot and aggressive. Will probably refret and get 1950s wiring kit...love it
Really appreciate you chiming in! Will you go with Stainless frets? I don’t play “a lot” these days but did in the 80s and never felt the need to re-fret. What fret size do you like to start with? I figure with jumbos you’ve got at least one, if not two fret jobs before re-fretting…?
@oldguyjammin9732 mine seem a bit small, maybe a fret job could work ....any new guitar will be jumbo and stainless...I want to dig in. Big bends and vibrato. Revstar has my attention...I want stability and playability
@@Ian-lm5ep - I’ve heard great things about the Revstars and have been curious as well. Let us know how you like’em.
I would buy the monoprice but i liked the blues jr more. I would just try a different speaker in it. Nothing wrong with the tone, but i like the fender sound more.
I’d buy a Junior if it only had an effects loop. Why Fender refuses to include such an awesome feature in their amps is beyond me.
Great guitars! Had a Tribute 60’s model with P90’s. Fantastic guitar for the money.
Couldn’t agree more \m/
So unfortunate Reverb has turned into what it has. Good on Reverb for eventually stepping in but still sticks it has to come to that as nearly 90% of most transactions do today on Reverb. Great axe!
Yep, super happy with it. I could have returned it, but never wanted to cause everything about it was ‘right’ - it just was not “mint” and that bugged me. But I’m over it and movin’ on!
