Paul, after hearing the change out on your tele, I'm thinking of doing the same on my tele. I really like how fat they sound. Did you install them or have them installed? Thank you!
Oh I’m scared of all things DIY.... so I paid the guitar tech in my local guitar shop to do it for me. I’m glad I did, because he babbled something about a base plate, conductive copper tape and bla bla bla.... I was lost after that. But I actually do recommend the swap.... my video didn’t really do it justice, so I’ll probably stick another one up, really demonstrating just how fat sounding they are. Cheers Bill
I like both… the problem you end up with when you pick your favorite sounding pickups for every guitar is that you end up building the same guitar over and over again. If you already have a great sounding classic tele why not build something with a little more output 👍
Yes, she shuts me away, bolts the door and leaves me in there for hours in a room full of amps and guitars. What’s a man to do! Thanks Paul, appreciate you watching 👍
I love the Quarter Pound bridge PU. I didn't know the Tele had a bridge pickup. lol. But in the middle position, standard neck and Quarter Pound bridge, I heard something wonderful!
Hi Paul, always enjoy your clips. I use Katana's too so love your tones!! That tele still sounds great...but I preference is the original pickups as I love 50s relic teles like that!!
Great video, as I've just ordered the exact same pups for my Tele. I had a set of Seymour Quarter Pounders on an old MIJ Fender Strat back in the 90s and absolutely loved them, and this video gives me a great demonstration of what to expect only Telecaster when they arrive tomorrow. Thank you, fellow Scotsman! Again, great video.
Thank you Billyrossjapan! And I hope you enjoy your new Quarter Pounders, I’m sure you’re in for many happy hours of noodling! Cheers for watching, appreciated 👍
Thanks Paul. Excellent demo. These QP sound incredible. I’m sure that your superb playing has something to do with it. But the dynamic sound differences are palpable.
I'm just about to put SD pups on my 2019 Prof. Tele. After listening to this I'm favoring stock Fender pickups in a big way and so I'm going to run my axe without change... THANK YOU!
Hi Robert. Delighted this video helped you in your decision. I agree that these Quarter Pound pickups are a matter of personal taste. I feel the same way about my Strat, i.e. I was considering beefier, fatter sounding pickups... but I’ve decided that the stock pickups are part of the guitar’s charm, so I’m keeping things unaltered. Cheers for watching 👍
Unreal playing my friend! I think those quarter pounders are the best things I’ve ever heard. Warmer, more full and more output! Badass. I just ordered them
I preferred the tone of the stock pickups. The quarter pound was hotter output but overall tone "quality" didn't do it for me. I would just push the front end of the amp to get a cruncher sound. However, I do use tube amps mostly. Might be useful with my quilter amp though.
I use the qp with 500k pots and a DM treble bleed. The roll back keeps the bass and treble even and really opens up your horizontal tonal options. Tele cleans when rolled back to hard rock tones when dimed on the bridge. That’s why the QP gets slammed for being too dark. The 500k pots and treble bleed are necessary to get the max out of these pup’s.
Hi dwb. Thanks for your compliment, appreciated. Yes, you certainly lose some twang with QP’s.... although I love what the QP’s do for a bluesy Crunch Tone. Thanks for watching man 😀
I have loved the 1/4 Pounders in a Tele or a Strat since they came out in the eighties when I first put them in my 62 Telecaster Custom. I really like the Classical / Celtic influence in your style and licks. Some really interesting phrasing in a lot of your licks. Cheers!
Thank you Norm Rivers! Delighted you picked up on a Celtic / classical theme on some of my licks. I guess the Celtic thing comes from being a fan of Rory Gallagher and also Mark Knopfler. I’ve no idea where the classical influence comes from... and yet I can definitely hear it 😀. Thanks for watching my vid 🙏
I've a few teles and now moved to a farm where I am building my own. The quarter pounds seem to be good to drop in my 95 standard, so I can pass those pups down the line to homebuilt one. Unfortunately, the one on the bench is ready for a pair of HB's so may go the extreme P-Rails route there. Great playing, clean, quick and informative. Cheers.
I am more of a strat guy but just picked up a cheap Tele and was looking around utube for better pickups. You just sold me, new pickups on the way and more mods to come..lol. ..Great playing love it.
Great video, and playing. Thanks for showing us the pickups in context and not just showing off your playing, like most demos. I actually purchased a QP set for my guitar yesterday. 🤙🤙
Thanks for taking the time to comment Michael, appreciated. Now I’m intrigued to see how you get on with your pickup swap! You’ll definitely notice the extra output... which is really evident in this clip. And then the added fatness and eagerness to lean toward a bluesy break up.... Anyway, would be delighted to hear from you in a few weeks, once you’ve had a chance to form an opinion 😀. Cheers Michael
Paul Stafford Cook So, the QP set is installed and exactly what I was looking for. The stock set was SD Alnico Pro Tele and lacked the mids I needed. The QP set sounds fantastic without overpowering the sound. Thanks again for the great demo, you should be getting commissions on sales from SD!
Thank you Charl, you’re right totally subjective. I’m a blues guy at heart, so the Seymour’s work for me. But for country twang the stick pickups have the edge. Thanks for watching 👍
Your comment got me thinking.... I reckon you have a point actually. Whilst I DO like the new Seymour neck pickup, I can see how Tele fans could feel something has gone.... any other Tele fans out there feel the same way? Feel free to comment / share 😀
I’ve been going mad trying to decide what pickups to transform my tele with, really glad I found this video and have ordered some quarter pounders ,thanks and all the best bud
Thank you for this video. Your playing and the guitar sound great. I am a quarter pound pickup fan in Teles, and the Strats. But have you tried the Rio Grande pickups? A Tallboy in the neck position, and either a Halfbreed or Muygrande in the bridge position.
holy smokes man great playing. also the quarter pounder sounds amazing i usually like more high end, but those beefy lows sound so great. i’m building a bullet mustang and thinking about using one of these for the neck pickup
Nice comparison. Just bought a MIM Telecaster Player Plus. And although I liked the sound, when I plugged in my old Dean Eighty Eight, I was surprised how much more I got out of the Dean. Have been looking at these Quarter Pounders or the Hot Tele pickups, but I think I like these QP's better. Thanks.
As you , I took my Merle Haggard "Tuff Dog" and replaced the pickups with the Quarter Pounders , AND I LIKE EM' ! (Everyone said that I made the guitar worth less money , I ain't gonna' sell it , gonna' Play It !)
Deciding on which bridge pickup to get for my telecaster and I stumble across this, well you've made my mind up for me big yin. The stock pickup in my telecaster is the Seymour duncan jerry Donahue lead, it is ear shattering trebly and has to go. Once again your channel has been a massive help to me in my guitar journey. Cheers big yin!
Cheers Derek 👍. Yeah, I think the Quarter Pound Tele Bridge should be just the ticket, because it trades that extra treble for some warm fatness instead.
I have a G&l ASAT with field density pickups and th quarter pounders sound similar. I have been having issues with bridge pickup being microphonic I replaced them and still did it put a differant set of pickups it got rid of it but now is very low output. So I ordered the quarter pounders
I have both hot rails and a quarter pounder. When I use the hot rails I usually use it with the coil split option. It's kind of a perfect sound. But I like the quarter pounder also. My favorite pick-up for now is a Texas special in the bridge. The problem I found with the hot rails it doesn't line up very good on the low E string on a Telecaster. On a recording you can't hear the Low E very well.
I've got a tele with vintage spec pickups and they sound thin with a high treble spike when the note is picked. It doesn't matter how much gain I put on, the treble spike is still there. After watching this I'll swap them out for the quarter pounders too. Thanks for the great vid. 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Do you have any opinion on how this Quarter Pound bridge pickup will match a P90 in the neck? Specifically the Golden Age P90 from StewMac?
Actually, you’ll think I’m strange, but having pickups properly “matched” is just not on my list of requirements for a great guitar. All that matters to me is that each pickup is great on its own merits. And if that means I end up with one pickup noticeably louder than the other....? Well I just factor that into my playing of that particular guitar. Plus you can always compensate by raising / lowering pickup heights if it bothers you. For what it’s worth I reckon the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound will work beautifully with a P90. And you’ll probably find similar volumes when comparing them. Hope that helps 😁
Hi Paul, great video and amazing playing. I'm torn and would love a bit of insight please if possible. I play midwest emo/math rock crossed with old school emo and pop punk so need a bright but heavy tone. That's why I use a telecaster to begin with as it has all the properties I need and love in how it sounds. However I have 2 player series, butterscotch and black on black and I would like to kid the black on black one and use that as my main guitar. I'm torn though as I mentioned because I dont want to lose that brightness and clarity but also want higher output pups.... I cant make my mind up between these specific SD's, fenders twisted teles, and SD hot teles... can you shine any light on what could be the best choice - I mainly play on the bridge for the grit and extra gain if that helps. I really like how these sound but dont know whether to go for fender for a more authentic sound? Or do these keep their telecaster-ness lol?
Hi Nigel, sorry for late reply. Yes, I reckon both the QP and the Hot Rails would work great. The QPs definitely retain more of the classic Tele twang mind you.
The tone pot is stock. The Volume pot had a fault from the factory, so I had that changed by the shop. So the Volume pot is a Bare Knuckle (still 250k). I’m happy with it, Bare Knuckle make great stuff. On a slightly different note, you’ll notice from a more recent video (ua-cam.com/video/bAg74k7RIlY/v-deo.html) that the neck pickup has now been changed to a humbucker. The bridge remains the same (Quarter Pound). I’d now say that this guitar is just perfect for me..... it’s “Telecaster meets Gibson” and I just love it.
Currently torn between the Quarter Pound vs Hot Tele sets... I'm new to the tele hybrid picking thing and gotta say you've got some crazy good style going on. Very nice :D
Definitely depends on what you want out of a tele. I think QPs stray from the traditional tone a bit, but are essentially a great way to hot rod a tele without getting into humbucker territory. I'm typically a SD fanboy, but I prefer stick here (and in my MiM tele), though if I get a second I may get a set of QPs. As a side note, I have QPs in my bass (PJ setup) and they're fantastic. Completely brought that bass to life.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 or three, or four, or five. One with P90's, one with humbuckers, and maybe two with single coils. Put those super sweet sounding pickups back in there that are getting the to die for Tele sound that is so hard to achieve, and get another one to put the Seymour Duncans in for great distorted sounds. Your playing by the way is incredible. You've got some moves in there rarely seen.
Can you please explain what (if any) changes you've found necessary to make as far as potentiometer values, taper and other circuit alterations are concerned? SD Quarter pounder pickups are new to me. I bought them partly because of your informative videos. I'd like to thank you advance for any and all information/input you're willing to divulge. I'm hoping I might save myself time, frustration and money. I certainly appreciate your posts.
Hi Jake. Sorry for late reply. Firstly, it was our local guitar tech who did the swap, as I didn’t feel confident. But I can confirm there were no changes to pot values or the general circuit. Now, going forward, I did end up getting the tech to swap the neck pickup to a humbucker (Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday). In so doing, we agreed that the tone pot should change from 250k to 500k. That not only made the humbucker sing a little more, it also gave extra life to the bridge Quarter Pounder. So in summary, if your guitar has a woody warm sound when unplugged, I’d suggest 500k pots when going for Seymour Duncan QP 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thank you! I'll DEFINITELY take your advice into consideration. Having Scottish genes... If I ever get over to your neck of the woods, I'd really enjoy seeing you playing live. Take care and I hope you and yours have a safe and Merry Christmas!
Hey Paul, hope you're doing well. Sorry for commenting on a not so fresh video. Based on your experience, it's that crazy to combine a neck humbucker like a 59 on a Tele with a Quarter Ponder on the bridge? Any advice or word will be more than appreciated. You're a wonderful player, thanks for your tips, mate. Cheers
Thanks for that lovely compliment Damián, appreciated. If you’re asking about the Seymour Duncan “59 model”, then I’ve not had any experience with that one. But about a year after this video, I DID swap the neck single coil for a humbucker. I chose the Stormy Monday by Bare Knuckle. It’ll be very much like the “59 model” from Seymour, i.e. vintage low wind. And I love it. In fact I don’t plan to any more changes to that guitar. I’d it helps, here’s a recent video showing this Tele with that set up ua-cam.com/video/S-SIiXLt0oE/v-deo.html
Hi Precise Audio Blog, just catching up on my comments. Thank you, delighted you liked the vid. I’m still loving them, particularly the bridge pickup. I don’t see me ever changing that one. As regards the neck, I’m changing that to a PAF style humbucker (Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday), with a heavy relic’d nickel cover. Review to come shortly. Watch this space 😃
Thank you Christopher! Delighted you liked the clip. And I’m still really enjoying the Seymours so I’d certainly recommend them. Cheers for watching :-)
Thank you Alexander, delighted you got something out of this clip. I’m sure you’ll definitely notice a fatter, broader and warmer sound, with noticeably higher output. Not high gain, but certainly a bluesy P90 type quality.... I just love rolling the Tele’s tone on the bridge all the way off, then rolled back in a tiny amount, to let some treble bleed back in..... fat, warm and bluesy!
As always bro you sound amazing, I know of the quarter pound pickups for bass, oh my do they sing, but combined with your playing, my gawd they’re just gnarly!!!!
I love the Seymour Duncan bridge pickup... neck pickup is a little dark for my taste... but obviously a fuller sound... thnx for the video it definitely helped me
after 14 months with my player series telecaster, ive been considering for a pickup "upgrade". this is a great video, and youre helping me to evaluate my options. thank you! ps: great looking guitar n great playing too!
@@beefyburt i did, im using a pair of quarter pounder with roland katana 50w mk2. gives me more versatility on range of songs from GnR to RHCP and sounds great on drop tune as well. but i'd reckon you enjoy your stock pickups. theres nothing wrong, as long as it delivers, whatever tone and sound you want, sir!!
Replies appreciated!!!! I bought a new 129 squier. I sanded and posished and rolled frets, neck feels 20 yrs old now beautiful!! But pickups kinda suck...I'm not too knowledgeable with pickups...but I need a very loud EXTREMELY clean neck....and a bridge that growls overdrive, not distortion....pure breakup, high screaming but clear output.
Interesting set of requirements..... I can only comment on what I’ve experienced..... so my guess would be a Seymour Quarter Pound (or Hot Rails) in the bridge..... but no idea for the neck. I’d worry that a QP in the neck might not be clean enough. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Hi Paul, very good job and nice playing ! Can you tell me if the bridge Quarter pounder is not to noisy ? I can't ear the single coil hum on your video, what 's your secret ? Thanks
Hi Gérard. Thanks man, delighted you liked my playing. Yes, firstly, it really isn’t noisy at all. Noisier than a humbucker? Mmm… maybe a tiny bit? But nothing worth worrying about. It’s WAY quieter than my P90 Gold Top (which is my noisiest guitar in terms of hum). But maybe the real secret is my volume on these videos…. I’m always at bedroom volume 👍
Forget the pickups, you play beautifully! Wow!👏🏻
Well thank you Adrian! Appreciated mate 👍
Good move on the "Quarter Pounders". Very rich and much fuller... I LIKE IT!!
Thanks Bill, I like them more and more. Fat juicy tones... lovin’ it :-)

For what it’s worth I reckon the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound will work beautifully with a P90. And you’ll probably find similar volumes when comparing them. Hope that helps 😁
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thank you very much for the answer.
5 seconds of hearing you play and I subscribed
Well thank you BinkiewiczWSU 🙏. Welcome aboard, delighted you liked the vid.
Are you using stock pots and electronics, or are those upgraded from what you got from fender?
Thank you John, delighted you liked my playing! 🙏
Very nice demo
Thank you Mick! Appreciated 👍
Yeah, maybe the ideal thing is to have two Teles, like you say - one stock, one modded 😀
SD QP's in a P-bass is a must for me, I have yet to find something better.
GREAT demo - thank you very much !
Thank you JPV Van der Merwe 👍. Cheers for watching!
Well it's the Seymours for me. But more importantly, that is some beautiful playing, Paul. Just love that.
Thank you Keith 🙏. Nice to read compliments like this, cheers.
Awesome demo. I'm digging this pickup now. Thanks.
Thank you My Fingerboard! I appreciate you watching, and delighted you like the Seymours. Cheers
guys try the roswell TE6 quaters. they are nice and cheap . its a hidden gem.
I’ve just had a look at them….. yeah, they look pretty cool, with the same oversized pole pieces as my Seymour Duncan’s.
Nice comparison video, and I really enjoyed your playing!
Thank you Curt, glad you liked the clip. Thanks for watching, appreciated :-)
great playing mate! the pickups sound great together
Cheers Leo! Delighted you liked the clip😀
Merry Christmas Jake 🍻
Came fir the pickup shootout, stayed for the sublime playing. Oan yersel ma man.
Thank you Taylor Made Music! Appreciated
Damn those QPs sound great. Maybe not as traditional but hell that's why I have 2 teles lol. Thanks for the demo !!
Thank you Cody! 👍
You could make any pickup sound amazing...
I think you are on right track with the QPs for blues...but the stock ones are perfect for country...
Thanks MikmawWarriorBrave 👍
Very nice video! Day and night difference... At the end it's personal taste. I love the warmth of the quarter pound.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I'm upgrading the pickups of a Squier Jazz Bass Classic Vibe to the Quarter Pound. So exited to see what happens. Cheers!
Great video comparison! I really liked how you laid that out. Thinking of getting some of those for my G&L. Awesome playing!
Thank you Christopher! Delighted you liked the clip. And I’m still really enjoying the Seymours so I’d certainly recommend them. Cheers for watching :-)
both great in their own territory. stock for pickin and jazzy neck. QP for rock and blues.
Dude I got some QPs after seeing this demo. Thanks for the vid! It was spot on. Just waiting to get them installed now. 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 awesome. Cheers for the tone tips Paul. You need to do more vids of you playing. Spot on!
Very nice playing. I just ordered the Quarter pound for my neck but the lil 59 stacked for my bridge.
As always bro you sound amazing, I know of the quarter pound pickups for bass, oh my do they sing, but combined with your playing, my gawd they’re just gnarly!!!!
Thank you Jay! 👍
I love the Seymour Duncan bridge pickup... neck pickup is a little dark for my taste... but obviously a fuller sound... thnx for the video it definitely helped me
Thanks B Floyd! Delighted you liked my vid 😀
that was sublime!!
Thank you Neil 👍. Cheers mate
QP’s sound great!
Thanks druwk 👍
I agree - the stock sounds better clean, the Duncan’s better with gain
Absolutely fucking smashing . Love it it’s the best yet paul
Cheers Iain, that’s a braw comment! Canny ask for more than that 👍🎸🤘
after 14 months with my player series telecaster, ive been considering for a pickup "upgrade". this is a great video, and youre helping me to evaluate my options. thank you! ps: great looking guitar n great playing too!
Well thank you Zaaid, delighted you found the vid helpful. And it’s always a joy to read a compliment on my playing, thanks Zaaid 🙏
Did you do it then? I'm getting a Player Series tomorrow.
I know this is 5 years later... but I think the SDs sounds louder, but not by any means better.
Now this sounds great ! Very nice demo . Tele + Katana + 1/4 pounder = oh ya man . Nice playing , great sustain too .
Thank you Tone Driver! Cheers for watching 😀
Something tells me it wouldn't matter what pickups you put in, you could make that guitar sing regardless!
For the record I quite like the SD's:)
Thanks so much Craig, lovely comment :-). And yes, I’m really enjoying the fat boosted sound of the SDs. Cheers
I will put these in my tele project when I save some money. Thanks for the demo!
Thank you Lalairu, glad you liked the vid 👍
