Saying numbers in British and American English (1-100)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 січ 2019
- How do we say numbers like twenty, thirty, forty, fifty etc. in English?
Well, it depends. There are some curious differences between how I say them in British English and how Jay says them in American English.
For example, tweny vs. twenty. Jay often drops the middle t in twenty and says twenny.
Then there's thirty. There he says the t but it sounds like very fast d sound - commonly known as a flap t. You'll hear lots of examples of the flap t in numbers in this video
Do you ever say free instead of three? We'll tell you about three vs. free pronunciation in England.
We'll also show you the difference in how we say numbers like thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, etc.
When we're counting in English a number like fourteen sounds different to when we say it on its own. We'll show you how native speakers change the word stress to distinguish between numbers like fourteen and forty.
And best of all you'll meet Super Agent Awesome for a numbers quiz.

I hope the weather isn't as bad as in Germany in Philly atm ♥
Sending you a warm hug from freezing cold and snowy Thuringia ♥
We're expecting our first winter snow on Saturday. Just and inch or so. But it is cold. Walking to work and back today, the temperature was about 23 degrees F, but with the wind chill it felt like 14 degrees F. (14 deg F = -10 deg C.)
That sounds just as awful as in Germany. The temperature is about -10°C. Whole parts of southern Germany are bogged in snow and it isn't predictable when it will stop snowing. o_o
I hope you're doing well nevertheless! Springtime will come soon! ♥
I'm brazilian and I'm learning english. Although I'm a beginner, I understood the most part of the video! :D

Love you, guys. ❤
I am from the north of England and most people say words like the Americans for example we don't always say the second t in twenty. We also pronounce last and past like Americans. The same thing applies with the word computer we say it like and American but in a English accent. It is very strange! Maybe you could mention this in your next video.
Thanks so much for this Ellis. It's great to learn about regional variations. I wish I knew more about regional variations myself to share some of them. I'm sure I could recognise a Geordie or Yorkshire accent, but I don't feel I know enough to talk about them.
Yeah but the accent is completely different. You might pronounce it in the same way but not in the same manner.
I can confirm we say a lot of words like American people but with a British accent
You sound so calm and nice!!😊

Great suggestions Y O. The years are much the same but there are some numbers like twenty eight hundred that Americans would be much more likely to say than Brits. And that quarter of/to difference is another one. .
