The dangers of recording at the edge of your vocal abilities in your 20s and then singing it live for 30 years lol
Absolutely 💯
Nailed it. His mid-range sounds like mine at the end of a vocal workout. As Sam said, he's really relying on his heightened larynx and nasality to take pressure off his vocal cords.
Serj is 52
@@hays9008 53
as a long time fan of SOAD.... it's the lack of practice from the band. And you gotta be shitting me with the 'edge of your vocal abilities' lmfao. He's messing up on the pitch not on all technical yelling and speed of the vocal part which is what would be lacking according to what you said.. ooof
“Yea he’s a little pitchy dawg!” Love it
wait... "All my co workers that are working from home seem to love the new fragrance?" 🤣
He's mentioned having roommates lol
bahahaha this confused me as well 😆
maybe they also got a sample ?
I love how sam is trying to be so polite while saying it was a sort of bad performance 😂 I love system of a down but this performance hurt a little
He said "a lil' pitchy" when in fact his singing was off in those parts even by the standard decent karaoke bar singer pitch let alone international artist pro singing standard. It is safe to say Sam was being euphemistic.
They’re my favourite band but they’ve never been as good live as on record.
@@Balla1989aus you’re crazy lol watch they’re late 90’s/early 00’s concerts they sound pretty good anything after then I would somewhat agree to that
I love Serj’s voice! It may not be what it once was but it’s still the voice of SOAD.
10 years later and I still sing Chop Suey like : NANANANNANANANNA * dramatic pause * NAANNANANNANAAN
20 years almost.....let that sink in
10 years?? lol
@@kaatyblue Maybe they're younger? Lol
That dude is so musical and creative. It would be cool to see if he could train into being less swingy in pitch for sure.
That band is such a musical treasure. I was a bit late to them but I love that dynamic sound so much, it's just a lot of fun compared to most music produced here in the west.
Yes! Please more rock, pop punk and post-hardcore reactions🙏🏻
The sound mix is terrible. If the desk mix is anything to go by then the onstage was probably terrible too. They all look like they’re struggling. If it sounds naff on stage it can be really demotivating.
100%%%%%
All I could hear was drums and vocals. Literally no guitar at all.
Serj has such a great unique voice. Love it
WE NEED 'A LITTLE PITCHY DOG' T-SHIRT!
🤣🤣 @ “Das a lil pitchy, dawg” *shakes head*
Might get sued by Roomie 😂
Would a lot of powerful emotion mess with his voice? If I remember correctly, this was from the first show they did in Armenia. It was really close to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide and the whole thing was a huge deal for them.
Good point! As an Armenian, I would say, yes.
2021 keeps bringing back my teenage years. Low waist jeans are back, everyone's into twilight again, and now this? I'm.. not complaining
Defending the importance of low and mid-range notes, my hero :)
I wish Sam could watch the Elect the Dead Symphony that Serj did. All of his songs during that performance are absolutely breathtaking.
Also those earlier performance where both Daron and Serj are on their game is super impressive.
Yeah im sitting here thinking the symphony vids are a much better pic here.
One of my favourite bands from my teenage years! Love their chaotic sound. This song takes me back. Thank you Sam! Great video!
Thank you for doing this reaction. So honest, intuitive, and constructive in your assessments. 💜
Not sure of his reputation but it looks like the sound might not be helping... in my experience if your monitor/overall sound is too high or too low results in screaming or singing by intuition and then your voice "remembers" the difficult positions easier therefore you relax on the rest and becomes pitchy... don't know if I'm making sense here 😅
He can be inconsistent. Look up his videos with the Elect the Dead Symphony: some really brilliant and ambitious stuff, but also shows that he sings at the limits of his range. This is certainly much worse than when I saw him in-person when he was doing his own project.
He prioritizes energy and mood over everything else, but I was surprised at how off he sounded in this video.
Can't stress enough how much I enjoy your authentic honesty. Hope you're doing well.
I've always thought Damon Malakian was technically a better singer, but Serj had the color and character to his voice that made them famous. Same with Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. Cantrell's voice is gorgeous, but I'm not sure they would have been huge if Staley hadn't had that captivating, unique sound.
Never heard a live version of soad where the harmonies were good. I think they ultimately don't care if they're pitchy
I'm thinking he couldn't hear himself well? Anyhow, nice reaction, Sam. 😌
I love that you find a way to turn a bad performance into a positive spin. Good work Sam.
Hope you react to a Marina Diamandis performance soon! Would love to see that.
Love this video! Great work Sam!
One of my favorite bands 🔥🔥 such a unique lead vocalist
They are awesome live. Love them. His high voice is amazing. Thank you for your input, I 100% agree.
Omg I’ve missed SO much 😭 YT hasn’t been showing me your new videos for months apparently - even though I’ve had alerts on
I love your insightful analysis
The variety on this channel 👏
this is dope. never knew i needed u to react to them but... i did
This is one band I've always wanted to see. He seems to be great in some performances and a little lacking in others. I dont care though, I just wanna see them!
It's crazy how many gigs I've been where in the moment and in the groove and in the audience it was total fucking awesomeness, and then afterwards when hearing something that was recorded at that gig played back it sounded like kind of not very good. Being there and being a part of the crowd just makes everything so much better, you just feel the music and the performance and the crowd so individual mistakes get lost in the mix.
@@rofln00b so true. Some of my favourite gigs where we all had an absolute ball, sounded pretty rough on recordings. Its mad. I just miss going to gigs so much.
Yay, Sam reacting to SOAD!!! 😊 I would love to see your reaction to Serj's Elect the Dead symphony live stuff!
I love your channel! 💖
Thank you so much!!
I haven't watched your channel for a while. At least you've upload some of my favorite rock bands, please react more videos, Sam! I wish I can take some voice lessons from you.
One of my favourite memories ever was seeing them sing this live years ago in Australia at a festival. Everyone around us shouting as loud as we could to the song.
BDO? They were amazing when i saw them in Melb
Yeah I saw them in Perth at a BDO. They were so fun.
this is the video I have been waiting for
Massive fan too, these guys really helped shape so much of today's music for how influential they were. I agree I'd be so down to see them live no matter how they sounded I'd still jam hard to it
Hi Sam! I love this vid. Been waiting for a while to see what the coaches here on the internet have to say about serjs singing on later years. I agree with everything you say. Just for giving some context. Serj started relying heavily on his nose since 2009. There are exceptions but its usually his tone. His mid and low ranges are awesome when hes doing more chill music. Also it might be due to the extreme use of his voice. I would love to hear you react to gate 21 live on (elect the death symphony). Love the content! Keep it awesome
love ur reactions! he sounds so different around 2002, it would be really cool to see ur thoughts on one of those performances
I love your videos!!
Thank you!!!!!
Great video! Yeah S has like no training for singing im pretty sure, so all those years of screaming wjth no training at all really damaged his normal voice and it could really be heard clearly around this time. They also usually sing this song near the end of the concert so my old man is tired by then lol. But honestly we go see these bands cuz they're legends not so much to hear them sing as good as they used to lol. Im glad they made new music to support the issues of their ppl. :)
My favorite rock band!!!!! I love Serj!
i think it would be nice and fair to also do a reaction for one of the pre 2003 live recordings. not to be nostalgic but to really appreciate them at their peak
I appreciate a constructive comments you’re making, and it’s nice to see a reaction video that keeps it real!
Wow you singing that line how it should be sung, sounded great!
Being waiting for this....for a long loooonggg fucking time
Aww man, I have been waiting for like ever for you to react to a SOAD song! Sad it wasn't the best performance, but this is informative too, to dig into what has gone wrong. Unfortunate performance, but I liked your analysis.
I really like your videos, they are always so well-thought-out. Have you considered making a reaction video on Dir en grey?
You're so cute talking about your hair care!
Serj was very nazal on that time, currently he has been moving away from that sound, you should watch the Rains of Castamere performance !
Also, please react and analyse Slave from Leprous live at rockerfeller music hall !
Damn Sam, this is the most I've heard you actually sing in a video haha usually you stop yourself :P I can tell SOAD has been with you for a long time.
omg Sam finally system of a down - chop suey ! I LOVE U
I love this song.
Serj has a strange voice, 1997 to 2002 his voice was powerful, there's a recording from reading festival in 2003, I recommend hearing Forest from that show, his voice was on point. 2005 and 2006 were his last years with system of a down prior to the hiatus, this is the moment where his voice started to sound more nassally, during the hiatus he sang his own songs, those songs had the same vocal style as he has now, there was a time in 2013 where he started to sound a little bit better. Even if he sings like that right now I would love to see them sometime, System is such a nostalgic band
Serj in the year 2013 was very delightful, I found this performance of A.D.D in 2013 ua-cam.com/video/xPW6jdKHPOw/v-deo.html listen to how great he sounds, especially when the crowd lights up the flare at that part Serj sounded the best.
I'm not sure if this was discussed before (haven't read all the comments), but what I noticed watching lots of SOAD's live performances is that depending on the tour period, Serj uses his voice in a different way when singing the songs from the pervious albums. My thinking is that so much effort (and maybe reinventing) was put into the new album that it bleeds over to the performance of the older songs, making it consistent in relation to the period album. I see this also for the rest of the band: tones and tempo . for me actually offering a different (not bad, refreshed almost) new experience. I admit that my first reaction to this particular performance was that something is off, but it also felt like it's filtered through all the changes that brought them to that point (plus some possible technical issues).
I would love to hear a professional opinions on this. Is what I noticed so or not ? are there Mezmerize & Hypnotize versions of Chop Suey? and so forth ..
Hi Sam! Thank you for your videos! It's great to hear an expert opinion on songs/performances (especially on Serj...he's one of my idols vocally, approaching his songs gives me a lot of trouble hahah).
I believe there are better performances from him though...his voice changed drastically since System broke up in 2006. I love all of his music, but I think he has some trouble reconciling his "new" vocal style with SOAD's more aggressive music. If you can, react or just listen to some of his solo stuff (Gate 21 from Elect the Dead Symphony is one of the most beautifull performances I've heard from him)!
So true, thanks for breaking it down and explaining why it sounded a bit off and giving suggestions to make it better. Great reaction as always! You should check out some of Tyler Joseph's best vocals from the band twenty one pilots, he has a really unique voice, lots to talk about!
I love this song, and this recording... Even the music itself just sounded off. If I didn't know what song it was, I'm not sure I would be able to identify it immediately.
Is this a new style of video? I'm not used to seeing you talk on a video in this much detail and this much passion
Although the forced psycho smile is still present, being wonderful
Would love to see another SOAD video where something wasn't off, since imo this was an outlier. There are so many great options to choose from (Vegas 2018, Denver 2000 , Armenia 2015, Lowlands 2001, Astoria 2005, Redding 2003, etc)
Approaching this as a listener/fan only. I know there's a difference between someone's voice and someone's singing ability. That being said, I could listen to Serj's pitchiness all day. I love his voice, 10, 20 years ago, and today.
I've never seen a vocal coach reacts actually point out what's being done wrong and what sounds a bit off, loved this and love the original song but yeh you're spot on with this
I love SOAD. Please do another reaction to a good performance of his.
Damn , I never clicked so fast, ready to get some SOAD!!!
Sam, thanks for reacting to SOAD 👏🏻😍
How can you do growls, screams etc? I want to do it but i don't want to regress my singing by doing them incorrectly.
As a screamer for 15 years now, my best advice to you is that if you scream from the diaphragm you won't do any damage. Screaming from your throat is how you end up screwing yourself up, and it can lead to nodes.
The Zen of Screaming
Check out Mary Z from Voice Hacks and check out Kardavox academy here on UA-cam. They're really good resources. Also Chris Lipe. And the extreme vocals institute.
@@user-bx8sj6qm3w thanks friend!
Could be full back issues, which really doesn't help, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was also just physically tired! As you said he was pretty manic energy wise, but he also seemed to wilt a bit towards the end. I'd also imagine that this track would be towards the end of the set so he could've been doing this for an hour or more already. I don't think his voice was tired, I just think he was tired!
This should be good!! And I'm not even past the promotion part yet!
I've seen them live three times, and all three times, Serj killed it. Just killed it, but this wasn't his best...
i wanna see them so bad
@@SamJohnsonVoice i was lucky to see them before covid!

This really made me wonder something - it requires a bit of narrative, but I'll try to ask it succinctly (and of course, no answer expected):
I'm a physician, and I can't watch medical TV shows (other than comedy) without nitpicking everything, and it's not enjoyable for me, or my family, who just want me to stop talking at the screen.
You being who you are - do you enjoy music competition type shows, or do you just have a running conversation with the screen?
Or take SOAD for example, you likely already know Serj isn't going to sound like he did in the 90's do you watch a recorded concert from an earlier time, or do you still go to the concert for the experience? And if you go, is it tainted knowing you'll judge how he may sound now, versus how he sounded in his prime?
I immediately acknowledge this was not at all succinct, but I blame you for being interesting enough to make me ask the question 😁.
Serj is probably the only singer that has me going from "THIS IS SO DAMN GOOD, please always sing like that!!!" to "OMG PLEASE STOP, MY EARS ARE BLEEDING" in a matter of seconds 😂
Makes me want to tell him to please, for the love of everything that is holy, get voice lessons, what a tragic waste of such a gorgeous character voice!!!
Also, to me, on recordings, his lower range is the best part, so full and resonant 😍
...thanks to Rick Rubin...he captured the magic in a bottle and put it on record for us...
But that is exactly what makes SOAD unique.
Hmmm... interesting. I would love for you to do more of their live performances because I've seen some good ones.
I'd love to see more rock/metal analysis videos from you. Do you think you could react to Judas Priest performing Beyond the Realms of Death(live Japan HD, 1978)? This is one of my favorite recordings of Rob Halford in his prime, as his voice is working as well as I've ever heard it in a live setting. There are some very impressive moments in this recording, and I'd love to hear you talk about it. Cheers.
Here is the link since it is very specific video without many views: ua-cam.com/video/BJJFgbU2JlM/v-deo.html
Absolutely superb singing.
Okay, I'll take a chance here. Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode, in studio his voice is honey smoother. Live he sounds... Ugh.
Could you do Never Let Me Down ,live from the 101 album vs any other live performance?
Thanks in advance!
I'd love to hear your review of their song Holy Mountains. That is one of my favorite of their songs. Admittedly, I'm Armenian and that song is incredibly Armenian.
A big thing is when was this recorded the live performance was it the middle or end of a tour?
Now I’m not as excited to see them in October in California lol but I’m still gonna have a good time
You're so freckly today Sam, I see you've gotten some sun :) Good for you!
Serj's live version of "Sky is over" is awesome ;)
I know a few people said it already, but it really seems like he had a very hard time hearing either himself or the music to keep him on pitch. The music seemed a lot more bare in parts than the studio recording, so he may have just had a hard time knowing where he is vocally and staying consistent. I've heard other live recordings of him that are much more on point...but regardless, it's still SOAD, and SOAD is phenomenal. Lol.
He's a little pitchy dawg made my day!
I feel like "little" was an understatement. That was very pitchy in a lot of places. Kinda surprises me, because I love system of a down
Hey Sam, you should react to Serj with "Lie lie lie" on his orchestra concert, he totally did so well
Greetings from México, love your videos
Could've just been a bad day. They were wonderful when I saw them.
honestly soad were beastly around 2000 onwards and serjs voice was amazing (imo as a non singer) he had some issues and is also the oldest member of soad by a long way so he kinda holds back now, he never used to be that nasal. I think he sounded worse in the last 10 years than he ever did before personally. if u were interested in something i think is an amazing performance at his peak id happily suggest one for you to analyze.
Itd be great to see another System video, maybe an older one or more recent but better (Ive seen some recent ones where the singing was a lot better) and maybe a Daron heavy song like Lost in Hollywood.
Would love to see more rock and metal vids from you, someone like King Diamond!
Im a big fan of unique vocalists, i do think it was a mix of wear and tear and an off night, which is a shame due to the importance of the locale. His Elect the Dead Symphony is a much better pic. Nicely done, Sam!!
Hi Sam, another great analysis of a voice! Love it!
If you find some time, could you please do a reaction on "Leprous - Castaway Angels"? Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Hey Sam, when will you be taking new students? I was browsing through your website and wanted to book a lesson.
PLEASE DO PEARL JAM - BLACK (MTV UNPLUGGED) it’s the most raw performance I’ve ever seen
Please react to Molly Sanden "Husavik" - Live at Oscars. Stunning voice!
If you wanna listen a voice like the studio, check Chop Suey POA 2001 or Chop Suey Reading 2001
Lmao at Sams face at 3:45!
Deng. Brings me back to middle school years. Hahaha
Should check out his version of rains of Castamere , serj solo stuff recently is totally different too what he did with system his doses those old system stuff just here and there when they have the odd concert that's probably one of the reasons
Sweet rugs!
Please react to Serj doing 'Rain of Castamere' live!
have you done cemetery gates by pantera?
See them at download festival, their amazing. They perform so many songs too. Just go one song to the next,
Where is this live performance from?
FINALLY
