iron maiden was my 1st concert.
15 yrs old, 16th row, Eddie, Harris' chrome bass plate blinding me like a lazer. Number of the Beast Tour which just happened to be the 1st cassette tape i ever bought. When that intro started live at the show, mind blown. i was dizzy at one point, looked down at one point for a minute, looked up and there was this what appeared to be this 20 foot tall dead guy walking on the stage with lazer beam eyes. 🎸

Let me start by saying I'm now an old git, so memories may be a bit blurred. The way you present these videos I think is superb, just like listening to a mate sort of saying "hey listen to what I've discovered", and drawing you right into the whole vibe.
    Enough ramblin'
Way way back circa 1970/71, the band I was in played a gig in our hometown of Whitehaven in Cumbria (was Cumberland back then). We played support in the Empress Ballroom for........ yes you got it - Iron Maiden. Part of the memory is pretty clear as being a local band we had local support, also it was one of those nights when everything just came together and gelled, so consequently we over-ran our time and the crowd kept wanting more, ultimately the Maiden guys came on stage and threatened to do us over, I was 17 so they were big to us, and we vacated quick sharp. Now to the point of this, I would swear that on 1 side of the stage there was a Carlsbro rig and a Orange on the other, with the vocals coming out of WEM tall slimish columns, I'm pretty certain there was no Marshall gear on stage. Apart from our bass players rig, mine at that time was Vamp, do you remember them? Virtually hand built in London. Don't know how much later it was that Iron Maiden got a record deal and a bit of recognition, but that night they were awesome, even though they looked dirty scruffy and knackered, obviously from hard graft fot little reward, I guess they maybe got £55 for the gig, we got £35, mind you could buy a pint for 9d old pennies that is 240 of those in £1, so £1 would but about 26 pints.
Now I'm rambling, sorry, hope some of this is of interest.

    • @CIRCLEOFTONE
      @CIRCLEOFTONE  6 років тому +8

Gordon Bennett That's brilliant info. I'm not surprised they got in your face. Haha. Teenagers usually don't know about stage etiquette and get carried away. Thanks for the kind words by the way. Means a lot. As for the gear they may have been running on the venue's cabs with Marshall's stuck behind. Perhaps even the whole orange head etc. Most early pics/gigs it's Marshall stacks everywhere. Esp on their larger gigs.

There is something about them no one can speak up against. I was 16 when I traveled the first time to see them. As a kid (I was born in 74) I was always disappointed when the press slaughtered bands like Maiden. I remember my dad telling me "Dont worry son, one day, your generation will rule the world and everything is different." Thank you for reminding me:)

What an incredible job you did here, total respect for your determination in finding those sounds and then absolutely nailing them! Phantom Of The Opera is just insane, there's no two ways about it! Everyone knows that Steve Harris is a genius of bass playing, songwriting and arrangement etc but still, even with that knowledge accepted it's still mind blowing how a kid in his early 20's even conceived of that track, let alone got it onto tape. That said, for all his genius, it's baffling to me how he still seems disappointed in the sound of that first album. For me, I think I'd stop short of calling it their best ever, but top 3, certainly. He knows far better than I though, obviously, he knew what he wanted to hear and I guess that witnessing Will Malone's disinterest day after day during recording wouldn't have helped. A classic track on a classic album, Iron Maiden should be held as national treasures in this country in my humble opinion and it's kind of sad that metal has been a bit of a dirty word over the years. That's just another reason to respect the band though, they could have easily sold their musical integrity for the corporate 30 pieces of silver many times over but they've never budged...although I'm still not entirely convinced by the guitar synths of "Somewhere In Time" :D

All I can say is the same audiophile chips that are being used in Slate digital hardware are used in my pedal and the signal is helped/maintained by other key components not found in any other pedal.
There will be an annoying amount of videos on it soon. But the price will go up to $129.99 when it's released fully. It comes with a cheat sheet because some of the sounds are not obvious settings wise. For instance it nails the Pink Floyd CLEAN solo tone. So it's not just chug.

They're honestly one of the few really old bands, where I am not expecting to be disappointed. They still have things to say and are not trying to re-create their old stuff. They're still evolving. Book of Souls was great and A Matter of Life and Death is, in my opinion, one of their best albums, and that was 30 years into their career. I'm super excited for their new album, whenever we may get our hands on it.

I first heard their debut album just as Killers came out. It was one of the albums that got me into heavy metal. Black Sabbath Turn up the Night, Mob Rules, Ozzy Osbourne Over the Mountain and Diary of a Madman, Michael Schenker Group Attack of the Mad Axemen and On and on, Scorpions Blackout just to name a few of the bands and songs that christened me into heavy metal.
Great job on the analysis of the band and the song. Iron Maiden is a bugger to play their stuff because it does take another level of play. Time changes, key changes, scale changes and more all at a frantic pace. Phantom of the Opera is really one of the songs that I give for the birth of thrash with the frenetic pace of the drums and the opening of the guitar.
One point I will say. Don't think that you have to like only the bands that are like you. Some great musical experiences come from people that a different than you. If something is difficult to play, then you will have a greater appreciation for the talent and then, hopefully strive harder to be better. By striving harder you will reach your full potential. Again, great analysis of Phantom.

Charles W Jansen II Yep good points. It wasn't about money, it was more of the tights wearing, fake mist, skull holding leather tunic thing that i could not relate to. That put me off. I didn't even know about the Dianno era who I would have related with more.
But I've matured now (only a tiny amount) and I can see how hard they worked. Huge fan in the making.

Cold Shower He's great, but if I compared their tones Randy's is that of a fire breathing Dragon compared to Jake. In technique and skill, Jake is awesome, but it's missing that classical influence I love in Rhoads' music. I do have a bias for Rhoads, but only because Jake's tracks do get old for me, maybe an exception for "Now you see it" which is just awesome. Jake for me is just missing a heavier tone. It's not heavy enough and sounds pretty flat.

Great tone and excrutiatingly close to the original. I got into maiden in 81 and watched the band take over the world through the next decade. I have also spent a shocking amount of time recreating their guitar tone, adrian smiths tone, to be precise. If you ever fancy another maiden related challenge, try to pick apart the tone from either the number of the beast album or the follow up, piece of mind. Martin Birch's production on those albums is out of this world as is the production on the next 3 studio albums. Neal Kay (google the name) co-produced an album i made back in 2009 and I spent alot of time discussing maidens tone, particularly on the first 3 albums. Those conversations, allowed me to properly approach recreating the tones I had been trying to achieve. Maidens tone has never been straight forward but has an uncanny ability to sound straight forward. Great video, particularly as it has allowed you to drop your misconceptions about the band and properly discover them. They are simply legends.

In my experience Maiden have 2 sets of fans: punk tinged early Maiden which I love and everything which came later. No surprise my favourite vocalist is Di'Anno. He is not as technically gifted as Bruce Bruce but when did punks care about that. My favourite vocalists are Joe Strummer and John Lydon. Attitude over technique. I also like Number of the Beast but that is more for the genius of Clive Burr.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE I do like some Bruce-era Iron Maiden, but have to say that the first two albums are more my cup of tea. Killers was/is my favourite. Will check it out though

Superb as always. I just saw them in June and I was disappointed they didn't play Phantom, but now I understand why. Either way, still a fantastic show with such an incredible amount of energy after all these years.
