Thank you T-Bone and Mrs. T for making this video! This video gave me the courage (and knowledge) to fix a blown head gasket on my lawn tractor which saved me some much needed money. Your contribution to the collective intelligence of the human race is certainly helping many people. 🙂
Performed this repair yesterday. Excellent instruction. Went very smooth with the exception of one thing that you actually warned about. After I pulled the head off I forgot to keep track of the valve caps. During cleanup I dropped one. Being as that I was doing this repair on my back patio and spraying the head with carb cleaner to clean it up, the cap came off in the grass. Upon reinstallation I realized one cap was missing and then I remembered your warning. I removed my right foot and kicked myself aprox. 99 times. I found some online and ordered a couple. Right after that, being disgusted with myself, I went out in the yard around where I was spraying. Low and behold... there that little trucker was. I freaking found it! Was able to continue the reinstall and got it all back together. Cranked er up and she ran like a top with NO SMOKING. Successful repair! KEEP TRACK OF THOSE VALVE CAPS YA'LL!! Thank you.
Really helpful, started mine yesterday after great difficulty, then a huge cloud of smoke. Got it going two more times, but it cut out eventually in a cloud of smoke. I am not a mechanic, but now I am retired from the army, I like to have a go at things. Thank you and greetings from sunny southern France!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with that problem. I found it so helpful as mine started doing the same thing. Now I’m going to take the head off tomorrow. Thanks again as you’re saving me a lot of money. Following from Sydney Australia.
Thanks for the helpful video. I had the same issue with my 2000 Craftsman 42in and followed your step by step to remove everything and now in the process of ordering replacement gaskets. Would have been much more difficult if I hadn't seen this video. Thanks
Excellent video--you even acknowledged your boo-boos. My head gasket went out two years ago & I had a pro fix it. If it happens again, I'll do the replacement myself. I've had 3 previous lawn tractors; none of them had a blown head gasket. It would appear that these latest ones have a serious design flaw.
@@WeldHoney you can fix it I'm sure. I'm guessing, by your name you are a welder. I've been welding since the 70s, my dad taught welding and metal fabrication. Great Great trade, a trade to be proud of.
@RaleysSmallEngines thank you I have fixed and sold about 6 riders this year alone, I prefer vintage Murray's just sold a 87 18 42 tractor. Seeing a lot of these craftsmans especially with Briggs with bad cam issues. Also seeing ton of Kohler Courage cracked blocks and replacing them with briggs. I am glad this is the trade I chose very rewarding work.
Great videos, you are very detail oriented, you describe exactly what you are doing or about to get done. Extremely great, very educational. Keep up the great work and posting more videos.
Thank you very much for your help. I've had issues with my used troy-bilt 30 inch riding mower smoking badly. Your simple method of using soapy water to identify a blown head gasket has saved me time and money.
I think that I am going to try and change mine out myself, my engine guy seems afraid to do this job and I feel it is because of warranty issues but not totally sure. I have been adding oil to this mower for 1.5 years and even bought a backup tractor but my wife like the Sears 3000 series better. Thanks you video was reasuring....
Thank you kindly Mr. T-Bone, with this video you saved me hours of messy work and colorful language. Your knowledge and diagnostic techniques spared me the trouble of a complete engine tear-down where I only need a new head gasket. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
T Bone your Tutorials are the Tops!! And the fact that you are a Rockerbilly Fan makes you extry Special. From a Funny Talkin Texan ( Yorkshireman by Birth Texan by Choice)
Sir and Madam thank you for this video. My Craftsman had the very same motor you were working on. And the very same problem. It had just started smoking and i came in and found your video. I checked the oil level and smell first. Then ran it for a minute and checked to see if any smoke in the oil tube. Yep sure enough. I came in ordered new head gasket. It showed up next day and I took my lap top out with me and fixed the problem. I did review a couple spots in your video as i went. As you stated it was easier than expected. Fired it up and just a puff or two of smoke from a drop or two of oil on the muffler. Thank you again Sir and Mrs. I will retire in two yrs and am gathering all the knowledge i can as i want to open a small engine shop. I am still lacking on the internals yet though. But getting there.
Thank you for this video! I think this is my problem with my Kawasaki FH500 twin. I like tools, so I ordered a leak down tester, but I'm about to go run it for a few minutes and see if I find smoke in the crankcase / oil fill cap. God bless!
Thank Yu So Very Much for making this video. it Realy helped me out. both in figuring out why my mower was smoking and also with putting the new head gasket on my ride on mower. i ordered 2 head gaskets, one to put on my mower and one as an extra one. :)
Love your videos. I am replacing the head gasket on a craftsman yt3000 model no 331977-0010-g1 and cannot find the torque specs for the head bolts anywhere.
That's a very good instruction video. This gentleman does good work and advice. If your engine is different than this one draw a diagram of where each bolt goes. That may be of some help keeping track of all the bolts. Just a suggestion. Good luck on your head gasket repair. 😊
Very professional job done perfect except for the push rod thing, but you're human and we all have been there and done it. luckily you caught it. Good Job!
My friend. I gor the same mower from my neighbor for 350 with the bag. I He gave me another rifer for free 19hp to swap. Well i pulled the head and the gasket and i see the exact same leak. Looks like at the factory they over-machined the block right there. The head looked fine. I hope a stens head gasket fixes me right up. THANKS!
Hello Raley, I just wanted to let you know that I really like your video. It's very informative and there's just enough humor to make it entertaining. Please continue to make this kind of video as I will be looking forward to future ones.
I've done a head gasket on a similar Briggs. I enjoy working on those small engines. On mine I had a valve job done. The old engine runs better than new. A great video. I'm sure it will help lots of people. 😊
...T-Bone....very nice DIY video on a blown head gasket repair....next time please show us the bubbles!....and, it's good to see you are only human and sometimes make mistakes....glad you showed that....thanks for posting, and keep 'em coming... :)

Thank you! I have a Stiga LMT and it starts smoking last time very badly - lots of oil residue and poor power. This is the 3 year after purchase. In the first year everything was good - we have not flat property - hills are everywhere and power is needed... and every next year problems grow... So, I think, I have the same problem.
Thanks for the video. You saved me a bunch of money. Replaced the head gasket on my 2011 Craftsman mower today. Easy with your excellent guidance. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Is there a PCV valve that isn’t working and thus building up pressure? Would it help to retorque the head periodically. This is the first problem I’ve had with this engine during my 12 years of ownership.
YES, do a yearly re-torque of the head bolts. Also remove the top engine cover. CLEAN all the oil and grass grit from the air cooling fins and all around the block. Also you must lap the head and block.Don't just toss on a new head gasket and call it good. Several I've seen smoke the head gasket again. Check the oil PRIOR TO EVERY MOW.

Great video! Really enjoyed it a lot, and you answered questions that other YT videos left unaddressed. One thing before I dive in: my engine only smokes when warm. There's no apparent smoke when I start it cold. Still probably head gasket, right?
Great Presentation.
