My Irish grandmother always said, "when you eat, you eat..." As a way to control portions, I started using ramekins for a treat of ice cream instead of a bowl...2 oz size. Everything in moderation is the catch phrase we use too. 🙏❣
My parents both ate whatever southern' foods they wanted and were never heavy into their 80s. Their secret? Never ate between meals. Just never got into the habit.
My great grandfather ate that way. Breakfast, lunch, & dinner. If he needed a snack, he ate peanuts. He only ate desserts for holidays. No matter what he had for breakfast, he ate a yellow grapefruit w/ it & w/ dinner he ate sliced tomatoes & raw white onions. He also ate his tomatoes w/ white refined sugar on them. He said that was his dessert. In the summer, he ate more. He'd have some type of melon each day for snack to stay hydrated. He was always so small. My great grandfather also had several businesses that made him work a lot physically & that was his exercise.
My parents were like that too. But if I compare the number of calories eaten, it was much smaller. Their dishes were tiny compared to what we use now. If they did go to McDonalds they had a regular cheeseburger, small order of fries, and some tea. Not something with a half a pound of meat, twice the fries, and a 32 ounce soda pop. I find that most Americans are proud of downing all of that and consider it absurd or impossible to live on less than that in a 4 or 5 hour period. Anywhere you go, if you will be gone for more than an hour, the discussion centers around where and what to eat. It's an obsession...like we are afraid we will starve if we go more than an hour or two without a meal.

I began eating this way several years ago and by preparing simple rustic meals at home the pounds melted away. I now fluctuate two or three pounds from time to time.
I walk a lot and drink water, herbal tea's, no sugar, low carbs, that's the best, cooking rustic little meals for yourself. It's cheaper and so much healthier. bravo love how you worded that.
That's the secret, eat consciously giving it your full attention allowing all your senses to be engaged. We should also learn to listen to our bodies more closely and it relays what it needs
The secret: Live in a beautiful place that feeds your soul. And walk your butt off between Metro stations. 😄 Actually, it did help to have to walk to the grocers and bakery almost every day.
Kay...I went to Scotland in 2018 with a friend and we both walked so much and ate healthily but on the fly with almost no sweets and we both lost weight without even trying! Visited many ancient castles and going up and down flights of long stairs all the time! Walked a lot in general. Yeah. .you'll lose weight. 😉
I noticed in Rome that I could buy a small 1/2 sandwich and tiny cup or yogurt for lunch. Not here. So in addition to no snacking, I think it has to do with the far smaller portion sizes available in other countries while eating out. It's not just a habit, it's what is available. Portions are mega-sized in the US.
Well, I don't know about America as the only country to serve mega porpotions. We were sent to South Korea for a conference. We were fed twice a day and there would be delivered to our table so many dishes of food we could have fed a whole platoon and still had left overs and there was just four of us at a table. I felt obligated to at least try to sample from each delicious dish. I couldn't move for hours. Never had that problem in US.
@@rayb.6345 You are soooo true ! Fat shaming may be common almost everywhere but in France, it's an epidemic, and an old one. I'm 58 and since childhood, I was taught not to eat too much, to avoid fat and sugar, not to empty my plate even when invited (everybody is on a diet !) and to learn to scold others about their "bad" habits. Thankfully I do not care about what silly and superficial people think about me and when I invite friends in my home, it's to have a nice chat, some wine, good food and not a word about what should be eaten or not. We are not all as superficial as one could think and the countryside is full of charming people who will never talk about diet and forbidden food.
I agree with everything you said here. I'm not french and don't exactly know their habits but I know that portion control and not having to feel "full" all of the time are key to how I maintained my weight all of my life. Eat until you are no longer hungry, not when you are FULL. I have too many obese family members who are completely unaware of how HUGE their portions are and feel they have to eat anytime they don't feel completely full. They say I am just luckly and it is not possible for them to lose weight....completely ignoring our lifestyle and eating habit differences.
I knew somebody who ate whenever her stomach grumbled. I found out because she put her hand to it one time and said she wished she didn't have to eat more because she was full, but it was grumbling, so she gorged to "appease" it. It was probably busy digestive issues, and she had weight issues. Go figure.
@@beebuzz959 the stomach rumbling is actually the small intestine cleaning itself. it can only do this while empty. It's not a digestive issue. it only takes a couple of minutes and you are not necessarily ravenous immediately. It depends on your energy level. if youcan learn to enjoy the feeling of lightness that comes with the clean intestine you will make itto the next mealtime without snacking.
@@debloui If that helps someone I am glad. I imagine though it is a "sensation" issue. I know my sister thinks she is hungry anytime her tummy isn't feeling very full and it's really hard for some people to "feel hungry". Personally, I don't want to feel uncomfortably full, she "needs" it that way. I wouldn't like to count calories and would not want to do that for a long period of time. But in her case, it seems it would help her to know when she's had enough despite her sensation and after cutting back over a period of time (gradually) perhaps adjust that sensation??? IDK, I'm not an expert on it.
They walk a LOT more AND they take their time eating too !! Their pace of life is SLOWER in general. Stress also can make many people fat because of cortisol and is very dangerous the older you get. Good sleep is good for maintaining a good heathy weight too !!
Thank you for the reminder to get good sleep. I often skimp on sleep and it’s definitely more difficult to maintain a healthy weight when you’re sleep deprived!

If you are active and embrace your professional life, you will burn calories either mentally of physically.
Love the ideas here! I admit I had to chuckle, because as you were talking about small portions, someone was diving into the largest pink macaron I have ever seen😌. Yum! As an American expat living in Europe, every single aspect of my food consumption and dining has changed. For the better.
It’s easy: 1. Portion sizes are normal in France (and the EU), while the portion sizes in the US are astronomical. A small sized soda pop in the US is a large sized soda pop in the EU 2. There is a lot of walking in Europe 3. The food quality in France and Europe is much higher than in the US. I always inadvertently lose weight when I’m in the EU despite eating “junk food” because the food quality is so high a person is satiated with a small portion. 4. Smoking is more common in France and the EU versus the US
Another important issue is mass adaptation. We tend to identify with the majority. Studies show that if the majority of a population are overweight then it is more difficult to keep the weight down. If the majority are healthy and thin then it’s easier to live healthier and stay thin.
I agree with that. That's why I worry about all of the plus size models. Yes I think we should have plus size models when modeling plus size clothing. But we need to remember the role model we are presenting. We realized models that reflected anorexic ideals was a bad idea, but now we've gone the other way and no one knows what "normal" should look like. I hear young girls who are normal weight complaining they want to gain, they want the big "butt". We are going down the wrong path.

I think the plus size models are not portraying their size as much as saying "It's ok to look good when you look good you feel good", big women styles have come a long way, and in a perfect world to me that is okay too, not everyone can lose weight and keep it off, we need to accept that.
@@mickeymousey1239 I accept some people will always be larger. And yes they should love themselves as they are. For the previous hundred years, women did not weigh anywhere near this much.. Americans reportedly consume 30% more calories than they used to. In addition, more of us live sedentary lives and work sedentary jobs. We need to fix that. We are essentially teaching people that there is no health risk in being overweight. They are big, beautiful, curvy, strong women. We have made them the Goal. It's great that large women have "come a long way"....but I'm not ok with using them as role models the rest of us should aspire to. I'm a health care worker, it's really not ok to just accept the fact that 35% of Americans are severely overweight.
Thin doesn’t necessarily equate to healthy. I wish people would stop assuming this. People can be larger and have no health issues, and thinner with multiple health issues. I agree that eating healthily and portion control are a very good thing, but this obsession with “thinness” is actually unhealthy!
All excellent suggestions except one: Chain smoking!! My dear Dad smoked for years and stayed quite heavy, up til the day that he passed away.... From emphysema, and COPD!! I see fat women smoking everywhere. That is their diet plan. Sad. Women will do anything to avoid simply working out. They diet when all they need to do i s jog, bike, or swim, and lift weights.
Exercise will only account for 20% of weight loss and the other 80% is food habits. You can exercise 5 days a week and become more toned under the fat but not lose the fat if you also do not restrict calories. Most heavy women are emotional eaters. It is not necessarily laziness but a coping mechanism for dealing with stress that develops it's own issues in time. Many people smoke for the same reasons and it is also unhealthy and aging. By midlife you can always see the skin damage that smoking does and if you could see their insides, it would show even worse.

I did this in my 20s, and lost 30 lbs. The key is no eating between meals. I'm 56 now and not sure I could do this, since I'm dedicated to a low carb diet to keep my blood sugar down.

She is so on the right path. Here in America; it is about volume. How much food we are getting in one meal. The more the better... Not true and so many want to spend money for quantity and not quality. We are a "Fat" nation! Yes; food should be pleasurable but most importantly to sustain us. It's beyond diabetes, cancer and heart attacks. I have several obese family members. By their 40's they begin to struggle with back problems, joint problems, reduced mobility, and limited job opportunities. Disability is a major problem probably 20 years earlier than it should be. I have a niece that is 20 years younger than I, I can walk circles around her. In fact, my 80 year old mother can as well.
@@christinep. It's an economic issue too. In France, we still have quite good healthcare and the government does everything to avoid obesity, because it would cost a fortune in treatments. In the States, it's worse, because you need a private insurance which doesn't cover all illnesses. So the French are scolded almost every day about food choices. Other people give you a dirty look if you gorge on more than one "pâtisserie", especially if you are not thin. It's cruel, but it's the only way to keep people in shape...
I'm so tired of hearing about sweeping generalizations about the way Americans eat. We are a vast country with many variations in cuisine. There are millions of people who are thin in America and we have many fine chefs and home cooks.

I wish Americans had smaller portions! I love a good restaurant meal but man do I hate how big the dinner plate is that is placed in front of me. I always feel like I’m wasting food because the meal should be enjoyed when it is served (not in leftover form) I typically have to take about half my plate home for the next day.
It is the more relaxed lifestyle of the French culture. The hectic American lifestyle leads to wolfing meals on the run. Cortisol from stress messes with metabolism. Starving all day then finally sitting down to a big late night dinner is disrupting for sleep. The body is given the message to store fat. Starve-and-gorge syndrome!
Honestly you do not have to be in France in order to be a disciplined eater. People forget that we all have small stomachs. Most people eat way toooo much food for the size of stonach we have. It doesn't matter how much sugar something has like a pastry, we as humans we're meant to eat just portions of food just to cure that hunger twitch on the stomach. Like someone said here, Paris is the LA of France so Ull see alot of mental disfunction there regarding their weight there😊
It is nearly impossible to find clothing in Paris for an average sized woman. I am considered a size 4 36x26x36 in America but a size 40 ( size 10 US or 12 UK). Walking down the street I feel like one of the biggest women around.
Often, when you order only a cup of coffee in a café, they give you a small cookie on the side- even though you didn't order anything else. Or maybe it's the mindset. You sit down and ingest something- voila, a meal; no matter what. 😉
There are great visual guides for that. Meat (if you are eating it) the size of a deck of cards or a cassette tape for those of us who are old enough 😁; rice or potato portion the size of a tennis ball etc. I have seen books called The Portion Plan, or The Portion Teller to help more with that. One of them is on my reading list. 😊

The quality of the food in France is also better. My family went to France for a week, and lost weight despite eating whatever they wanted. You can't do that here in the US. Even the packaged food they sell in convenience stores tastes fresher and has better ingredients.

Why are Americans so large? 40 years ago we didn't snack like today. We sat down together to eat (no TV during meals). We drank Coke occasionally. Moderation of all things seems to be important. But sitting to eat without games, phone or TV might be the biggest difference. Because Americans didn't walk more in the '70s. This lady might be onto something.
And mealtime is for the French social time... very important, and yes important to savor and taste your food... that is precisely why you don’t have to eat a lot of it to be satisfied...
I believe in not cutting anything out, but you have to maintain a balance of foods. You can eat sugar and drink alcohol, but don't make it your largest food group.
She is right. Americans eat low quality junk food and just shovel it in. When the food is high quality, it can be savored and satisfying in small quantities.
My father used to say : "Look at the Americans. We'll look like them in 20 years". My father died 10 years ago. His prediction is coming true. More and more french people get obese too. I remember my primary school : not a single kid overweight, not even slightly chubby. All skinny as hell ! Now, obesity is getting an issue in France too and starting in kindergarden .
I think the biggest problem here is all the high fructose corn syrup they use in EVERYTHING. Im a stage 4 cancer survivor and I eat very carefully, still allowing some sweet, but nothing processed or store bought. If I want sweet I'll make it from scratch. Pretty much just shop the perimeter of the store like someone who is low carb, but I am not low carb. Due to chemo ruining my kidneys I've worked pretty closely with a nutritionist to get my calories up while maintaining the proper nutrition. Since protein is hard on the kidneys, I only eat animal based proteins once a day, 30grams or so, but if I go over, I'll go vegetarian the next. I'm still 30 lbs overweight but have upped my calories from about 700 to 1100 a day. I need to be at 1800 just to meat bmr. Darn steroids. Every day for lunch, I eat a homemade bone broth and veggies soup, changing it up each week and make one big batch for the week. My body might not be, but my labs are impeccable.
The no preservatives thing is a real factor. Even most of our pasta has a bad chemical they dont have in Europe.Many prople wjo cant eat pasta here have no problem in Italy Ive heard several times. I forget the chrmical but whole foods had a brand without it.

It is not only the diet, that French women don't get fat, but in surplus they know to take castor oil in a regular manner - look at UA-cam -, and this one they learn from a very young age.

Having visited France for a month every year for more than 30 years we didn't take too cheerfully to cancelling the ferry twice this year. April is the next date. Here is what I struggle with...do you wait until your stomach growls to eat? I have a smaller breakfast and when it's time for lunch (at my job, I have to take lunch at a certain time, 12p). My stomach is not growling and I'm not necessarily hungry but it's the only time I will get until 5p. Since I am at a call center, I can't really stop to eat whenever I want to. Should I be waiting until my stomach growls? Thanks.
every time you eat something you flood insulin into your body and store your food as fat. I can only remain slim on a low carb diet. Eating one meal a day. A lovely delicious meal. but only one meal a day
My way to keep fit ( around 112 pounds) is eating a variety of vegetables, three full meals including vegetables, protein and carbohydrates each day without snacks,and whole grains.

Same with my Louisiana family. No junk, no snacking just great Creole/Southern food.

Yes, in my country the McD burgers are smaller than in USA.

I know my sister thinks she is hungry anytime her tummy isn't feeling very full and it's really hard for some people to "feel hungry". Personally, I don't want to feel uncomfortably full, she "needs" it that way. I wouldn't like to count calories and would not want to do that for a long period of time. But in her case, it seems it would help her to know when she's had enough despite her sensation and after cutting back over a period of time (gradually) perhaps adjust that sensation??? IDK, I'm not an expert on it.
They walk a LOT more AND they take their time eating too !! Their pace of life is SLOWER in general. Stress also can make many people fat because of cortisol and is very dangerous the older you get. Good sleep is good for maintaining a good heathy weight too !!
Thank you for the reminder to get good sleep. I often skimp on sleep and it’s definitely more difficult to maintain a healthy weight when you’re sleep deprived!

It’s easy:
1. Portion sizes are normal in France (and the EU), while the portion sizes in the US are astronomical. A small sized soda pop in the US is a large sized soda pop in the EU
2. There is a lot of walking in Europe
3. The food quality in France and Europe is much higher than in the US. I always inadvertently lose weight when I’m in the EU despite eating “junk food” because the food quality is so high a person is satiated with a small portion.
4. Smoking is more common in France and the EU versus the US
Plus, they don’t want to keep buying a size up in clothes.
Another important issue is mass adaptation. We tend to identify with the majority. Studies show that if the majority of a population are overweight then it is more difficult to keep the weight down. If the majority are healthy and thin then it’s easier to live healthier and stay thin.

I agree with that. That's why I worry about all of the plus size models. Yes I think we should have plus size models when modeling plus size clothing. But we need to remember the role model we are presenting. We realized models that reflected anorexic ideals was a bad idea, but now we've gone the other way and no one knows what "normal" should look like. I hear young girls who are normal weight complaining they want to gain, they want the big "butt". We are going down the wrong path.

I think the plus size models are not portraying their size as much as saying "It's ok to look good when you look good you feel good", big women styles have come a long way, and in a perfect world to me that is okay too, not everyone can lose weight and keep it off, we need to accept that.
@@mickeymousey1239 I accept some people will always be larger. And yes they should love themselves as they are. For the previous hundred years, women did not weigh anywhere near this much.. Americans reportedly consume 30% more calories than they used to. In addition, more of us live sedentary lives and work sedentary jobs. We need to fix that. We are essentially teaching people that there is no health risk in being overweight. They are big, beautiful, curvy, strong women. We have made them the Goal. It's great that large women have "come a long way"....but I'm not ok with using them as role models the rest of us should aspire to. I'm a health care worker, it's really not ok to just accept the fact that 35% of Americans are severely overweight.
Thin doesn’t necessarily equate to healthy. I wish people would stop assuming this. People can be larger and have no health issues, and thinner with multiple health issues. I agree that eating healthily and portion control are a very good thing, but this obsession with “thinness” is actually unhealthy!

I see fat women smoking everywhere. That is their diet plan. Sad. Women will do anything to avoid simply working out. They diet when all they need to do i s jog, bike, or swim, and lift weights.

Exercise will only account for 20% of weight loss and the other 80% is food habits. You can exercise 5 days a week and become more toned under the fat but not lose the fat if you also do not restrict calories. Most heavy women are emotional eaters. It is not necessarily laziness but a coping mechanism for dealing with stress that develops it's own issues in time. Many people smoke for the same reasons and it is also unhealthy and aging. By midlife you can always see the skin damage that smoking does and if you could see their insides, it would show even worse.

I did this in my 20s, and lost 30 lbs. The key is no eating between meals. I'm 56 now and not sure I could do this, since I'm dedicated to a low carb diet to keep my blood sugar down.

She is so on the right path. Here in America; it is about volume. How much food we are getting in one meal. The more the better... Not true and so many want to spend money for quantity and not quality. We are a "Fat" nation! Yes; food should be pleasurable but most importantly to sustain us. It's beyond diabetes, cancer and heart attacks. I have several obese family members. By their 40's they begin to struggle with back problems, joint problems, reduced mobility, and limited job opportunities. Disability is a major problem probably 20 years earlier than it should be. I have a niece that is 20 years younger than I, I can walk circles around her. In fact, my 80 year old mother can as well.

@@christinep. It's an economic issue too. In France, we still have quite good healthcare and the government does everything to avoid obesity, because it would cost a fortune in treatments. In the States, it's worse, because you need a private insurance which doesn't cover all illnesses. So the French are scolded almost every day about food choices. Other people give you a dirty look if you gorge on more than one "pâtisserie", especially if you are not thin. It's cruel, but it's the only way to keep people in shape...

I wish Americans had smaller portions! I love a good restaurant meal but man do I hate how big the dinner plate is that is placed in front of me. I always feel like I’m wasting food because the meal should be enjoyed when it is served (not in leftover form) I typically have to take about half my plate home for the next day.

It is the more relaxed lifestyle of the French culture. The hectic American lifestyle leads to wolfing meals on the run. Cortisol from stress messes with metabolism. Starving all day then finally sitting down to a big late night dinner is disrupting for sleep. The body is given the message to store fat. Starve-and-gorge syndrome!

Honestly you do not have to be in France in order to be a disciplined eater. People forget that we all have small stomachs. Most people eat way toooo much food for the size of stonach we have. It doesn't matter how much sugar something has like a pastry, we as humans we're meant to eat just portions of food just to cure that hunger twitch on the stomach. Like someone said here, Paris is the LA of France so Ull see alot of mental disfunction there regarding their weight there😊

It is nearly impossible to find clothing in Paris for an average sized woman. I am considered a size 4 36x26x36 in America but a size 40 ( size 10 US or 12 UK). Walking down the street I feel like one of the biggest women around.

Often, when you order only a cup of coffee in a café, they give you a small cookie on the side- even though you didn't order anything else. Or maybe it's the mindset. You sit down and ingest something- voila, a meal; no matter what. 😉

There are great visual guides for that. Meat (if you are eating it) the size of a deck of cards or a cassette tape for those of us who are old enough 😁; rice or potato portion the size of a tennis ball etc. I have seen books called The Portion Plan, or The Portion Teller to help more with that. One of them is on my reading list. 😊

The quality of the food in France is also better. My family went to France for a week, and lost weight despite eating whatever they wanted. You can't do that here in the US. Even the packaged food they sell in convenience stores tastes fresher and has better ingredients.

Why are Americans so large? 40 years ago we didn't snack like today. We sat down together to eat (no TV during meals). We drank Coke occasionally. Moderation of all things seems to be important. But sitting to eat without games, phone or TV might be the biggest difference. Because Americans didn't walk more in the '70s. This lady might be onto something.
And mealtime is for the French social time... very important, and yes important to savor and taste your food... that is precisely why you don’t have to eat a lot of it to be satisfied...
I believe in not cutting anything out, but you have to maintain a balance of foods. You can eat sugar and drink alcohol, but don't make it your largest food group.

She is right. Americans eat low quality junk food and just shovel it in. When the food is high quality, it can be savored and satisfying in small quantities.
My father used to say : "Look at the Americans. We'll look like them in 20 years". My father died 10 years ago. His prediction is coming true. More and more french people get obese too. I remember my primary school : not a single kid overweight, not even slightly chubby. All skinny as hell ! Now, obesity is getting an issue in France too and starting in kindergarden .
I think the biggest problem here is all the high fructose corn syrup they use in EVERYTHING. Im a stage 4 cancer survivor and I eat very carefully, still allowing some sweet, but nothing processed or store bought. If I want sweet I'll make it from scratch. Pretty much just shop the perimeter of the store like someone who is low carb, but I am not low carb. Due to chemo ruining my kidneys I've worked pretty closely with a nutritionist to get my calories up while maintaining the proper nutrition. Since protein is hard on the kidneys, I only eat animal based proteins once a day, 30grams or so, but if I go over, I'll go vegetarian the next. I'm still 30 lbs overweight but have upped my calories from about 700 to 1100 a day. I need to be at 1800 just to meat bmr. Darn steroids. Every day for lunch, I eat a homemade bone broth and veggies soup, changing it up each week and make one big batch for the week. My body might not be, but my labs are impeccable.

The no preservatives thing is a real factor. Even most of our pasta has a bad chemical they dont have in Europe.Many prople wjo cant eat pasta here have no problem in Italy Ive heard several times. I forget the chrmical but whole foods had a brand without it.

Here is what I struggle with...do you wait until your stomach growls to eat? I have a smaller breakfast and when it's time for lunch (at my job, I have to take lunch at a certain time, 12p). My stomach is not growling and I'm not necessarily hungry but it's the only time I will get until 5p. Since I am at a call center, I can't really stop to eat whenever I want to.
