That's one heck of a deal, Steve. Funny how one split wire can render something unusable. Love it when it's something this easy to fix, although this one was tricky to pin down. Good job!
Thanks Angaar! Yeah, definitely an easy fix but difficult at the same time. I thought I was going to have to strip the whole thing down at one point! Glad I found the break(s) relatively quickly in the end. 👍
The best thing I've found Steve other than heat shrink, is a very short 1/2" or so of self amalgamating tape. Stretch it really thin then wrap it around the soldered wire. Satelite and tv aerial installers use this tape every day to seal water out of co-axial cable and their connectors.
Take a look at the Playstation 3D TV at some point. The EPROMs keep dying on it and was never addressed by Sony, they dropped it a year and a half after release. A $500 paper weight unless you have good soldering skills and an EPROM programmer (or pay $15 on eBay).
Is there no where one can just buy a new cable cause wow I don't have any of those tools u used to fix yours and am pretty sure it the cable that's damaged in mine.😭
I can't believe you were able to fix this. It's the exact problem my brother's V1 headset had. For him, he would store it in a drawer when not in use, so the cord got so tangled that over time there must have been potentially even just a single wire damaged. No one in a 100 mile radius of me would have the skills to fix that shit.
Nice job Steve Something we’d do on aircraft cabling was to split the heat shrink down its length, wrap it around the cable loom and then superglue the overlapping edge - then heatshrink it I’m not going to pretend it was pretty, and so your tape solution may be the better result as it doesn’t get exposed to any nasty environment No singing this week? Nose flute still on order?
😁 Thanks Guy. I did actually try splitting a bit of heatshrink and glueing it for a bit of a test, but I just failed miserably! 😅 no singing this week I'm afraid. I thought I'd impress you with my amazing dance coordination instead!
I've fixed several VR headset but never a PSVR one. You gotta have the finest touch to go near those WMR screens. They are as thin as tracing paper and shatter at the slightest tweak. You are very lucky it wasn't a screen.
HelloO.. Nicce and excellent! Dave had no clue what you were up to with his hilarious headset. You are very entertaining and you are very unique in electronic comedy entertainment. You just make me laugh and fun to watch your videos. I see the little kid in you and it reminds me of myself. Keep the good entertainment going as electronic repair can be regarded by many as boring but you are taking it to another level and hopefully this is just the beginning and more to come.
😁 Thanks M m, that really means alot! I like to have fun while I try to fix stuff! It's two things I really like doing, so I'm hoping that comes across. Really appreciate the comment 👍
Good fix, I think I might have been tempted to open the band and remove the cable from the helmet end and push heatshrink down it that way but if you are keeping it then that seems like a lot of hassle :)
The two methods I would've looked at for heatshrinking are to either open the headset, desolder all the wires, put some over, then resolder, or cut the headshrink in like a spiral, so you can spiral it over the cable, yet you haven't technically cut it in half. Works better on thicker cables.
40 pin wide flat solid connector in the headset...would have to cut the wire clean, slide on some heat shrink then then and resolder each of the approximately 34 wires back together, + the aluminium sheath
Nice fix Steve they is only two ways l know off and that is take the wires out of the head set then put the shrinking sleeve over the wire or can you buy a new wire and replace but you got it working well done 👍
Nice job Steve 😉 I saw a repair video a few years ago about a similar VR headset. That one also had an issue with the wireing. I think people are just stepping and rolling on it blindly 😀 The only solution would be to make it wireless.😀
😁 Yeah, you'd think Sony would be looking at making them wireless. The cable is long and awkward, and I can imagine thousands and thousands have been broken just by the cable alone!
You could try to cut a large heatshrink (you can get them plenty large) up spirally, then shrink it. It will overlap because of the spiral cut. Use a few dots of superglue on the ends to hold it in place. I use Everbuild Stick 2, that is proper epic stuff oh, and it's "duct tape" used to repair ducts in days of yore
Nice videos mate 👍 like watching your repairs - UA-cam started recommending them to me and I’ve been watching them ever since.. wish I had your technical knowledge and setup to be able to do similar stuff.. Ps think you can get heat shrink tape now that you roll around over itself (slightly overlapped) then heat it up for an enclosed bond.. haven’t used it myself but been in similar situations with wiring before. I was initially thinking maybe chopping the damaged section out and you re solder a junction Board / box inline; but that’s a lot of work and then you have a chunky box hanging inline… Cheers for the content 👍👊
I think the "wire within a wire" is carrying video and the outer wire is the shielding in which case you should ensure the outer braiding is covering the inner wire rather than just connecting with a wire.
Your heat shrink product needs an upgrade, you shouldn't have to leave your wires looking like shitty hot dogs. Great work and I love your videos. I'll find out the brand we use at work and report back.
in the headset where it connected maybe there is a quick connect and you could have slipped the heatshrink over those and down the cable? But awesome fix mate keep it up.
I would have cut that entire section of cable out rejoined the wires individually and heatshrinked it that way, you would probably lose about 1-2 foot of it but it would look tidyer
Thanks Herve! I'm happy that it works, but I keep looking at the tape and wishing I could tidy it up! You're right though, it works - that's the main thing! 👍
Nice that untested this time sorta meant untested. Yea they did know the thing as a whole doesn't work. But. Probably stopped there and sold all of it and untested meaning they didn't individually test the things. The box works and would cost more than the whole lot if sold separate.
You're missing the stand for the camera. It looks as though the Headset wire was wedged between something while in use, & all the moving & twisting about has weakened the wire. A lot of technology that gets thrown out or sold off as junk can have something minor wrong with it & people come along & knows how to rectify it & afterwards they are laughing with glee & satisfaction that they manage to resurrect which was previously busted!😃👍
If you use one size up heartshrink split it get it over the cable the fold edges over use 2 mini clamps anout 5mm apart heat gun inbetween clamps use more heat to melt edges then it sticks had to do that before
Hi Steve just need some guidance. really enjoy your channel I'm looking for a new hobby at the ripe old age of 62. what books and kit would you recommend to get me started in the electronics fun.
I've got that stuff from AliExpress...don't ever heat it up, it contains "asphalt, resin, filler and curing agent etc" - it smells abysmal and I think heat would cause some lung issues if I'm honest. Works nice for sealing around laptop power adapters you had to crack open.
You should get some Silicon Tape. Great for insulating. Wraps on like tape but it only sticks to itself and won't get all gummy like regular tape after a few years.
This is the exact same thing that happened to me except when i bring it to the electric shop they say they have to get some kind of permision from sony and no shop whants to fix it
I know that guilty feeling of wrapping duct tape or insulation tape, I'd rather cut the wire in two parts, put the ample amount of heat shrink for outer cable, strip those tiny wire ends, join with boot lugs or tiny terminals with thin pvc coating and complete the job. Sure it leaves a bulge in the cable but at least looks better than the tape.
It is a sensor that detects if someone is wearing it. It will dim/turn off otherwise which wouldn't be very helpful when trying to do a repair like this. Covering it up will fool it into thinking someone is using it so it will stay on.
Common problem, been trying to find the split in mine for ages. Surprised sony didn't make the lead changeable, would stop a lot of VR's being rendered useless.
Hey, it'll likely be the same problem. Some of your wires (or maybe even only one of your wires) is severed. Or the cable has failed at the connector either end. Hope you can find the problem 👍

Great result. What a good find. Millions of pounds spent on R&D by Sony, and it ends up in a £35 job lot lol
😂 yep! Really happy with this job lot, most of it is now working and I reckon I've more than made my money back on it.

Good to see you attempting to fix this VR headset there Steve not a easy fix but good job was really interesting to watch - Nice 1 mate 👍

Neurosurgery on a Sony - Nice fix there!

Better than my mod.. heat shrink and bag clip to stop it disconnecting! Fyi i used pound land earphones as the replacement earphones 🎧 🙃

🤣 thanks Peter!
in the headset where it connected maybe there is a quick connect and you could have slipped the heatshrink over those and down the cable? But awesome fix mate keep it up.
The cable within a cable is "coax" or "coaxial" cable, a mini version of TV aerial cable.
Thanks man you helped me identify the issue with my PSVR the kids must have rolled over the cord with a chair. Nice one Bruce.
Love it. Can we go for a few beers and then play that game after? I think I might laugh harder than I ever laughed before! Great Job Sir!
Haha, yes! This is the ultimate party game! Well, this and Guitar Hero obviously! 😁
That gimpy laugh at the upside camera had me choking on my tea. Wasn't expecting that.
That cable looks like a pain, so much shielding.
What a bargain and a great repair, be careful you with those controls haha.

15:14 yes you can cut heat shrink tune down it;s length ... use crazy glue to seal the overlap

Went through this same process with an oculus cv1, twice. It was an absolute nightmare.
Liquid Electrical Tape would of been good to seal the cable in the end!

“Stop hitting the table” immediately hits the table
You’ve saved me like £300-£400
You can get heatshrink with an adhesive liner, split lengthways, overlap and shrink. A bit fiddly though and some adhesives are better than others.
Thanks Ralph! I did spot these on Amazon and wondered if they would work. Think I'll give it a try! 👍
Try some self amalgamating tape. Wonderful stuff.

When you discovered which wire was broken, did you separate the center wire from the copper sheath? Please help!
Maybe in the future u can get the same material as the outside slow melt it and dip in in to make new sheathing

Well done! Great video
Can you please tell me what kind of heat shrink tubing you use and how ya put it on? And how ya got it over the small wires? Is it heat shrink tape?
question: could cut a shrink tube down the side apply and super glue with as much overlap as possible (dry) then heat ??

How did you use the heatshrink on the cables If you didnt cut it?
He cut the internal damaged wires, before soldering them. This meant he could put heatshrink over them.
I'm the kind of guy who would find the damaged part of the cable, cut off six inches on either side of the break, and join everything back together 😁
You could of layed the heat shrink flat on the table lay the cable over it and then fold the heat shrink back on itself and heat ;)
