  • The shadow pattern in our photographs helps set up the composition and we have the option to change the shape or redesign the shadow pattern to improve the composition.

Strong shadows add so much to a picture. I always have to remind myself to deepen my shadows. I work in watercolor and the colors lighten as they dry so I really have to push the darks when painting. Thank you for you instruction.

Great tutorial! It's so easy to forget that even the shadows have shape and ontribute to the overall composition. I did a large ting once of a bison ranch- I liked most of it pretty well, but something was just off. A local artist asked if they could make a change- which I agreed to she painted in a good stronge shadow to direct the eye much better, and it made all the difference in the painting. My shadow was far too weak, and was not prominent enough to really direct the eye. Of course I forgot the lesson later and still run into the same issue where "something is off, but I just can't figure out what"- many times it will be the fsct that the shadows aren't defined enough and constructed in such a way as to add to a dynamic composition. It should be an easy thing to remember as 2 key things in a painting is "dark, and light" and each should help strengthen the composition, but I jusy forget over time.

Try doing a small thumbnail drawing first in pencil to figure out the strong contrast of dark and light.

@philstarke.artist thanks Phil- good suggestion- the tonal ranges will be a lot easier to see for me that way, as color won't distract too much-

Another helpful and interesting topic. Do you find you strive for inequality in the light vs shadow? I mean, is 50:50 to be avoided or perhaps it’s more important to have balance in the four quadrants of the painting? I guess one thing I like about your videos is you don’t only show “this is how it’s done” but you also include “this is why/how it shouldn’t be done” if that makes sense. Thanks again

glad it was helpful Adam. It does help to have one dominant value instead of 50/50
