The Color of Depth In Your Landscape Painting

  • We have to think of depth or distance in our paintings as a color. Just as sunlight has a color to it, - yellow and orange depth has a cool color to it - blue, blue-green, and violet. With photos we lose the subtle value and color changes that we see in the landscape. Photographs will give us the distant planes cooler and more blue but not the subtle changes in the middle gound and background.

Thank you Phil. I've seen your painting at the end before and like it very much. The repetition of dome shapes in the trees and hills creates a very interesting pattern. I really like repetition of shapes (with variation) in a painting.

Do you do patreon or online lessons? Or painting critiques etc?

Do you think the cost of Photoshop is worth it if your not using it daily or are some of the other programs just as good? Thx Merry Xmas Phil

I use procreate, its for the ipad, cost about $15, one time fee (at least it did 5 years ago). it does require an apple pencil. You might try gimp.org, it has a free option with some good features. You can always try photoshop, its a monthly charge and you can opt out anytime

Hi I love your videos .teach me so much.but this one frustrated me ,I was expecting and keen to learn the points of your title but the first 3/4 if the video seemed to be on composition.you started off on point then went to cropping the photo. I had to sit through all of this .which is not what I wanted to learn.i actually skipped forward to try and find the topic.younended with a colour study.i would have been interested if you explained your colour choices this study rather than all the talk on cropping.thx for all your videos .
