  • The Battle of Prairie Grove was a battle of the American Civil War fought on December 7, 1862. While tactically indecisive, the battle secured the Union control of northwestern Arkansas.
" In one of the more amazing feats of the Civil War the 19th Iowa walked 110 miles and 3 days to get to the battle of Prairie Grove. The young farm boys were not accustomed to wearing these shoes and their new government issued boots made blisters on their feet at this point, many of the young soldiers preferred to walk barefoot on the cold road carrying their shoes across the butt of their rifles or tied to their knapsacks. They reached Prairie Grove after dark and waded across the Illinois River in freezing water that was waste deep. The young soldiers were hungry for there had not been time to eat during this forced march. They Dropped exhausted on the other side and slept. In the morning their clothes were frozen to their bodies. They slept as if they would never wake, While the shells from the battery in the early morning burst over their unheeding heads"

The national events on the 10 year or 5th year are by far the largest - with Gettysburg (this year at 4,000) reenactors being my highlight in terms of numbers. I tell you there is nothing like waiting for the mock battle to begin an you see hundreds and hundreds of rebels coming out of the woods you are assured of a good fight. Note : we don't have a lot or any that I'm aware of Rev War here in Minn. If you can send me your groups facebook, web or youtube channel and I'll take a look. Yar Pard --LT

I remember using a Sibley stove in our Sibley tent one winter in Minnesota at Camp Stump Water with the 1st Minnesota, my bunkie Bill D. had that thing stoked and the pulsating that thing did was impressive. It really is and you yankee fellas do it best ;) bigger, louder, more in character too! My fondest memory was forgoing a tent as it was a nice summer evening..built a fire, lay our blankets down, had the worst that area had seen in over 100 years. Spent the week cold, damp, hungry and mostly without a fire so not hot coffee just forage and salt jerky. It was great! As authentic as can be 😊the health issues after, not so much. My lot was 12th New Jersey and 1st VA inf. When I was younger we did a 'bushwhacker' impression too. I was lucky as got to attend Gettysburg for the big one, Sharpsburg and even got to visit Vicksburg. After a 14hr trip I still remember having some cajun fish dish, a large whisky and then we walked over to the park, seeing some of the outlying area. Absolutely fantastic :) now my lungs aren't great, last time I was at Gburg was just after the heavy flooding there and walking up from the TF round and up LRT to the large stone and view point had me wheezing a bit. Why I say it's good to see the young ones stepping into our places in line :) keep the history alive. Maybe one day I'll organise a GAR impression hah.

Hey pard - this painting of the confederate line was is the small museum on the this site - titled "They Came like Demons" an excellent Trans-Mississippi Painting by Andy Thomas, of Carthage, Missouri, illustrates the Western End of the Prairie Grove, Arkansas, Battlefield. This painting depicts what many think happened during the battle based on the Official Records, diaries, memoirs, and letters

Hey Pard .. as much as I would love to, I won't be able to make it. The biggest factor for me is the driving distance. I'm planning on attending the 160th Resaca GA event and possible the 160th Wilderness. Can you remind me ... have we spoken? (perhaps I don't recognize your youtube id)

The stove reminds me of GP mediums and the gas stoves. It was MoGas, no kidding.
