- Every year, hundreds of people from across Europe and North America converge on a military base in Germany to re-fight a battle from the U.S. Civil War. There's cavalry, artillery, soldiers, and civilians, with meticulous attention to detail right down to the last button.

Not really surprising. E.g. every tenth Union soldier was a German immigrant. Even today there exist some family ties. Back then a lot of these German-American soldiers saw in the American civil war a continuation of their failed revolutions against European monarchies in 1848/49, because they thought that birth should not define one's fate.
@@AeussersteKraft Every 10th was also a Black. Don't know where these facts come from. It was descended from immigrants in general, not actual immigrants, or specifically Germans.

Norma jean Morrissey, it’s history, other people can be interested in history from different countries. I find it better for them to be interested in our history than to make fun of our country, which many Europeans do.

Union sdiers speaking German is actually accurate
Lots of Deutsch. A Confederate company from Texas was made entirely of German speakers and fought in the Rio Grande valley in New Mexico.

I'm so sick of people comparing the Swastika flag to the Confederate flag. The Confederacy wasnt carrying out mass genocide or murdering their way across a continent murdering everyone that wasnt Aryan. More crimes and atrocities were committed under the US flag but that's ok.
One was the lead cause of a mass extermination and one fought for state rights. I will say the church bell should stay. It’s history. And you can’t erase history. But you can keep a Nazi flag from flying. And I do agree with that one.

I have to give all respect to europe on this one. I honestly didnt think you guys gave a shit about American history but in reality we have to hand it to you guys we wouldnt be a country without you. Thanks to Spain, Italy, England, France, Russia amd the imigrants from Ireland, Germany, Scotland.
One thing that is repeatedly missed or ignored when reenacting the civil war in America is the fife and drum, so to hear it here is amazing! Very well done!
Makes me happy seeing Europeans reenact our history. Met a guy from the UK that reenacts my 3rd great grandpas unit the Pennsylvania Bucktails. Wish more of my generation would get involved in reenacting they should give you a free year of college for every year of reenacting or public service as an incentive.
Folks can't just hand out free college, especially to get you to do a hobby.

@@rc59191 Dude, I'm a reenactor and I assure you it's not a job, it costs thousands of dollars. That's a large part of why not that many young people are in it.
It's kind of sad when Europeans have more interest in American history than Americans do! I've been a reenactor here in the States since 1992 and we used to have THOUSANDS of folks show up at events across the country. We used to get invited regularly to do presentations for schools and what not. These days the numbers drop a little more each year and it's blasphemy to even consider bringing schools into it. A large part of that is due to the youth just not having any interest. They teach nothing of it in school except for the slavery aspect and if it's not on a computer screen then it's evidently just stupid. Another huge reason is that political correctness has taken its toll. I portray soldiers from both sides but I can't put on the gray uniform these days without someone calling me a racist. I had ancestors that fought on both sides and I've researched them in great detail. For the record, my Confederate ancestor was a dirt poor dock worker and could barely afford to feed his family much less own slaves. He lived in Virginia and joined the Army to keep his wife and children from starving and being homeless. Anyway, now we have almost as many protesters showing up as we do reenactors and sadly there's been two events recently that were canceled due to bomb threats. I've been to Germany before and I'd love to find my way back someday to participate in a reenactment.
It's a shame reenactors can't be turned loose on those protesters. They wouldn't be so brave then. Thank You for what you do.
I thought it is the opposite. NW Reenactors got a maximum of 7,000 actors on the field, it was 2013 in Leipzig (1813 Völkerschlacht) and you guys in america had 5x more in Gettysburg.
Im a son of the confederate and this is so true. My 13 year old peers do not understand the meaning of the grey uniform and call me racist for recalling my heritage. These liberals have ruined my school system. I once allowed my great grandfather, the son of a confederate (my great great grandfather) to come into school and teach the class about the war and old portraits we have. Kids have been bullying me calling me a racist no good pig who deserves to end up like my great great grand daddy, in a hole dead. I have been threatened and told to not come to school anymore. It saddens me how ignorant people can be towards the confederacy. The war was not fought for slavery but rather to split into our country. The battles at Kennesaw and Chattanooga have resided and no longer happen due to the liberal agenda.
You realize most young people don't get more than two or three days off a year? Not to mention the cost of putting together a historical uniform and rifle, as well as a plane ticket and hotel room every. I personally know many people that would LOVE to participate, but they can barely make ends meet as it is.

As an American Civil War reenactor that reenacts in America, I highly respect those A.C.W reenactors in Europe.
As an American reenactor of the American Civil War who's been on MANY campaigns and anniversary battles I can honestly say I'd love to come to Europe sometime and fall in with ya'll.

The Rebel Yell☆☆ I read that the Confederate army has Stonewall Jackson to thank for it! The story I read was that immediately before Jackson led his men into a battle he told them to, "Yell like the furies!" What they did became the Rebel yell!!+ I watched a Gettysburg 50th north & south reunion. Someone asked some very old johnny rebs to do the yell. Even though a little of the ferociousness was lost w/ age, it was still pretty intense! It was amazing to watch these elderly,yet brave gentleman meet in peace and harmony after all those years!♡My love and respect to all, north & south Norma Jean Morrissey

Also, you don't have to only be a nurse if you wish to be a soldier, reenactors don't segregate to be accurate, so you can have blacks in grey because obviously it's not REALLY 1863 and many women fought anyway. We all know about women sneaking in but one NY Zouave Regiment had female soldiers that were officially nurses but often fought in the same ranks as men.
I often wonder if the Europeans knew anything about America civil war. It great to see stuff like this on UA-cam.
I was curious about the presence of so many soldiers from around the world fighting in the Civil War. Were they being patriotic for their new country? Was it to obtain a job they couldn't find. elsewhere? I suspect it was both. One comment I will add, there were no black confederates, no way, no how. NJM

That makes absolutely no damn sense, The only organized army of black men was United States Colored Troops and before that black sailors. By the time Jefferson Davis thought it might be a.good idea to use slaves in combat, it was mid to end of March 1865. Lee surrendered April 9,1865 Get real there was no time to train, no money to outfit them, no motiva-tion on their part to fight! Why should they fight? For freedom they had already been given? We must learn all about it in Germany if we want to do the Abitur (graduating high school). But yes the focus lies more on the American Revolution, were we also need to know the most important battles etc. It’s a lot.

As an American who in recent years sees a lot of hate and generalizations about my country, most of which are completely valid while others not so much, I’m flattered that some Europeans show interest in the United States history As many Americans are fascinated with European history.

Its awesome to see Europeans taking such an interest in the ACW. Most people never stop to realize that a good majority of those who fought in the war werent American born, they were immigrants. European families were just as affected by the war as American families were, north and south. I dont think a lot of Europeans today really realize that theres a high chance that they actually had ancestors who immigrated to the states who ended up fighting in the war.

My great great grandpa fought at the battle of Shiloh in 1982.
I feel bad for the Irish. First the potato famine, then fighting a civil war for a foreign country. They pretty much got shafted by god.
KS our Civil War was divisive and deadly: 750,000 lost in battle and to disease! Today. I have heard that would be 4 million! What I am leading up to is the fact that many Irish famine victims came here not only to escape starvation but knowing (maybe praying) they were likely to find work. They did! It was with Uncle Sam! Union soldiers were paid $13/month which supported some immigrant families! Not the best job you say? Many lost their lives just like other Union soldiers. For many, they had a great sense of pride. Not only had they become new citizens in a great land, they now had the opportunity to defend it against the abomination of slavery! Other men did seek and find jobs in construction and on railroads. Were soldiers afraid? Going into battle? Of course they were! But they were thankful for the opportunity to become part of this country and help their families at the same time. Don't even get me started about citizens in a new land, the amount of racial abuse that the Irish had to take from Americans in the early periods was abysmal. Happy to let them die for your cause, but not happy to treat them like equals, what a fascinatingly disturbed attitude.

I wish they talk more about this stuff today reenacting in America is dying out that makes me very sad I’m only 17 but it makes me sad to see less and less union and confederates show up to Gettysburg every year. I want to become a teacher so I can educate youth on this war and this amazing hobby it also looks like I’ll be going to Germany
Biscuit plays : I am proud that you feel the way you do about educating future generations. Go for it! Start now! Chose a Civil War topic that interests you. Learn all you can about it. It can be a major battle, several people, both sides, medical people like Dr. Jonathan Letterman! (that's what I like- I am an R.N.), soldiers who were actually women, or Native Americans-most were Confederates-they owned slaves! Look up a man named Ely Parker U..S. army officer, lawyer, U.S. Grant's assistant who wrote the terms of surrender/ Appomattox to which General Lee agreed. Also
Native American!! There are so many interesting subjects to research/study. I also study Titanic & other ships of the era as well as the wild west (1865-18!95!) I always have data floating around my brain! I love it!

In most countries muzzle-loading guns like these are regulated differently from more modern weapons.
In the US, they're not even considered guns at all.
You typically need a licence, which isn't hard to get. We just don't sell guns next to chewing gums and beer.

I think it’d be funny if a American showed up. What a lot of Americans don’t realize a part of what made the Civil War such an interesting subject and such a tragedy is most Americans including myself can trace ancestors to both sides of the war

A lot of Mexicans were in the Confederacy even a General was a Mexican.
You are right about Chinese, German,French and other ethnicities taking part in the Civil War. I think that many (can't give you numbers) joined the service for the $13,/month, steady meals and medical care they received. @@jonathanjonnylightning718 the first confederate Asians are Filipinos they’re enlisted in Louisiana estimated about 1,200 to 10,000 joined and some of them were categorized Chinese(alot of them have Chinese ancestry and surnames or look like one) or mexican(same goes with the chinese)

I’m curious how an American conflict got popular as a re-enactment era of choice for some in Europe.
They didn't use the term "union" during the war, at least, not in that sense. It was "The North, " or "The United States."
Union was absolutely used to refer to the Northern states

It is used in Autobiographies by important people referring to that time, but those texts were written decades later. Primary sources to not use the term "union" in that way. It was simply the United States

As a kid I watched my dad several times a year reenact battle on actual historic battleground in Arkansas. Watching Europeans do it is just weird.

Comparably, the Second Sleswig War (that happened near the tail end of the Civil War) saw breech loaded artillery and rifles. A stark difference from the muzzle-loading of inferior weapons that went on in America.
Breach loading cannon's and other technically advanced weapons were used during the civil war. The use of trains and telegrams during the war influenced many European officer's and commanders most notably Helmuth von Moltke.
We has Ironclad warships, gatling guns, breech loaders since the 1850s. Too bad Europeans couldn't own firearms back then or now.

There are no German Confederates, German Union soldiers or even anymore Nazis come to think of it! When you reenact you are presenting a point of view. I am curious as to why you say this. I think there are white people who would like to see Jim Crow laws still in effect,! we do have KKK groups fortunately in less than half our states with membership in thousands,not millions!!¹ I an saddened to say some have "junior KKK" groups. KKK was started by angry Confederates in December, 1865. Men who couldn't let go! "Lost Cause" believers! Their 1st "Grand Wizard" was Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate Guerilla (partisan) General. Historians consider him one of the Civil War's best officers. Forrest was named Grand Wizard of the Klan because he was known by all as the "Wizard of the Saddle". What is interesting about him is his apparent "turn around" after the war.,1875. He resigned from the Klan, and spoke often and positively about black people, esp related to black rights! Personally, I believe he found God!♡♡ 1877, he died from Diabetes complications. Since then he has been honored by many. A bit of trivia: In attempt to keep soldiers food fresh, Napolean tasked his.chef with the job

Explain! They didn't stand a chance because there weren't enough of them. As General Lee ( a man I admire) lost each brave young-some teenagers!man to an amputation or death, he lost 2 to infectious illness. As the war went on, Lee had fewer and fewer replacements. PLEASE DON 'T TELL ME THAT DAVIS & LEE had many blacks to utilize. Saying "go get'em johnny reb" to a group of slaves wasn't gonna cut it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hearing Germanic language with a Union or Confederate uniform perplex me. But no doubt Europeans and/or their offsprings participated on both sides of the Civil War. I say this ... we should re-enact the Hundred Days War in the United States. 😂 #Waterloo
Union army was many All-German unit, like 29th, 46th, 5th germans rifles and 52nd New York, 12th and 17th Missouri, 9th and 107th Ohio regiments.
24th, 43rd and 82nd Illinois, the 32nd Indiana, the 9th and 26th Wisconsin and the 74th and 75th Pennsylvania regiments.
@@SavolaxMitsu nearly 200.000 German Immigrants or people with German heritage served in the Union Army. At the End of 1862 the Union Army had to standardize the command language to english because so many regiments gave orders in their first language like german or italian.

@@Ghastly_Grinner In spite of their deniall, Great Btitain did make ships for the Confederacy. How many, I can't find that info. What I do know is that they would build a basic ship with no armaments or any thing that appeared "war like"on it. THe Confederate NAVY would add the guns. THE ships were ready to go!
