Cowhide/Steerhide vs Horsehide Leather Jackets.

- Leather, like denim, wears in beautifully. It picks up a patina over time, much like the fades on our jeans. It has the ability to get better with use, much like our jeans. And it has the ability to contain a narrative. Again, much like a pair of raw jeans. These garments, or in the case of leather, accessories too. tell a story.
For leather jackets, nothing seems to be so divisive as the conversation between steer/cowhide vs horsehide.
So, that’s what I want to discuss today. I have experience breaking in both. I have my opinions on the pros and cons of both.

I've worn a horsehide Schott perfecto 618 for 10 years on my motorcycle, and you're right, breaking in horsehide is a totally different experience. It takes a little patience to soften up and mould to your shape, but the rewards are worth it. This jacket will outlive me by decades!
Well said! Yeah, I wonder what will happen to all the things I have hangin up... hopefully they are classics enough that the kids get some wear out of them.
I’m currently trying to get a Perfecto 618HH. How are you liking it now?
@@reyvalentine3 Well put it this way I'll own it for the rest of my life, I'm too attached to it to ever want to sell it! And like I mentioned, it only gets better and better. My dad bought a similar style Aero jacket in horsehide but gave up on it after a few weeks because he didn't have the patience to break it in... If you get one, wear it as much as you can to start with, live in it!
@@tobysmith7881 I see. Thank you! I’ve been eyeing the HH one because I’m a fan of the 40’s-50’s look and noticed the leather jackets then were HH and shinier!
@@tobysmith7881 My Aero horsehide jacket that I bought second hand for £45, has survived 15 years of rough wear, including as a passenger on a bike, inside a barn fire beating the flames out with sacks and a couple of weeks every year getting showered with embers when we burn the stubble.
To say that it has saved my life, may be an exaggeration, but it has certainly offered a lot of protection.
A few months ago, I met a retired New York firefighter. He wore a Schott horsehide jacket in his early career and mentioned that although the modern kit is fireproof, it offers far less protection from exploding glass and falling debris. The change was due to the high maintenance and costs if replacing the leathers.
Your compare and contrast presentation portrayed well the inherent qualities of each type of hide. The personal observations helped, also, in making a future purchase.
Great comparison! That Leftfield had a really cool design with the simplified design and longer body length combined with two way zipper. The horsehide jacket will get really beautiful with age!
The commando with tea core horsehide would be a great combo!
I have a horsehide moto I got from Addicts Japan last June. I wear it 3x a week or so and it’s only just now starting to soften a bit. I think that horsehide is great but I would also not recommend it for a first leather jacket if you’re buying new.
Where did you pick it up. It’s on my grail jacket list.
@@CeeAreDeeI got it from them directly. Wasn’t cheap, but it was worth it
@@mateotrono (coach leather conditioner) then sleep in it (rockstar style)!
A question, do you just wear it out of the box or condition it first? I do throw some oiling to the stiffer parts like sleeves and front zip so it breaks in faster
How's your Addict jacket now?
I had the Schott/3sixteen Arabica steerhide for a while but had to get ride of it as it was a bit too heavy for my liking. Found that leather to be far more challenging that the 1.3mm thick (My one and only jacket) shinki horsehide which I currently own.
Ah yeah. That one I never saw in real life. Always wanted one. I had my eye on the a2 they did. But hard to get over here.
I’ve got into the whole quality Mens wear thing about 5-6 years ago. I buy less but spend more🤣 but having said that my stuff is beautiful and classic so will last forever in my wardrobe. My wife has no idea how much some of my jackets and jeans and boots cost. Thank god😄 My steerhide Aero 30s 1/2 belt is fantastic but heavy and took me a good 6 months to wear in properly but it’s perfect now. Two Eastman A-2s in horse hide. Lighter and way less break in period. Patina on both is great. Didn’t know about the front quarter thing. Thanks!
How old are you? I’m 22 trying to navigate buying leather stuff without pissing off my lady lol. Are you good at saving? Any tips?
If you still have the Enfield, I'd really be interested in an update. I think Shell Cordovan Boots patina so beautifully, I'd love to know if horsehide does as well since cordovan is ass fibers, not skin, haha. I agree with the style as well. It reminds me much more of an Aviator jacket than a Motorcycle jacket. It's the collar. Although I ride cruisers, I prefer the cafe racer Moto style jackets, but never considered horsehide. Thanks for the vid.
for longer lastingness...both is the same? Thorn between CXL steer or horse ...getting an Aero Highwayman..
.... just a mention...
Heavily worn black leather, as well as other colors... can be touched up/ over dyed... with a lighter color to bring that depth of color spoken of.
Would be cool to see more of these types of vids. Since your a scott, on wool sweaters from scotland and ireland could be cool!
Marino wool fantastically versatile
I'm an Aero and Lewis fan. Some of the Aero cow leather is delightful.
Aero leathers heaviest horsehide jacket is so tough and well made. £750 with a great lining, zips. It was better than old Lewis leathers and we'll worth the money.
I'm going with the steer hide!!
Decent choice.
Would you say the Enfield is true to size, or should you consider going up or down compared to your normal size?
Horsehide is lighter, smoother and tougher. Cowhide is more maleable, pourous are less resistant.
Greetings man. I have had experiences with several hides here in Mexico and i find the heavyweight difference to be between heavy cowhide and calfskin (Which, as weird as it may sound, here in Mexico is sometimes tanned a certain way resulting in a leather similar to horsehide in not stretching almost at all and having a particularly rigid hand without any finishing on top) while cowhide is not as rigid but is considerably thicker and looser in grain than the calf, while still being pebbled and firm as well and being used as the main motorcycle grade leathers here in the country.
The thing is, usually the calfskins finished that way are very thin, around 0.8mm or 2oz. in thickness, are very lightweight pretty much like lambskin when used in a garment, but at the same time they are pretty much indestructible and impossible to scratch or damage, it's like armor, while cowhide is, again, stretchier, not as rigid, but far thicker, around 3 or 3.5oz or 1.2, 1.4mm in thickness. Both could very well be used as motorcycle grade leather. Personally i find the charm on any of the two: Cowhide forms and molds better into your body shape and it is easier to wear even when being thick. Calf, on the other side, is harder to wear because of its rigidity. And it indeed is a matter of personal preference. I do not have currently any idea on which one could last the most, but i will find out over the years. I yet to have a horsehide jacket, but here, the hides are finished as soft calfskins and do not have rigidity or firmness of consistency. Lambskins in my opinion here are tanned poorly and result in hides which get damaged very easily (Letting them soak in the tannins for longer, using less chemicals to dehair them and leaving them thicker would be a great solution to that) and steerhide / cowhide are always disguised between them and you cannot spot them from eachother, but anyway, besides heavyweight jackets (Most production of jackets, i'm guessing some 80% of the ones you see at any leather garment stores, are thin lambskin) they are normally used for bags, footwear, and when vegetable tanned, for straps, belts and shoesoles. Greetings
Spring’s around the corner. You should talk about classic lightweight jackets like Members Only, Harrington G9, or Bomber jackets
Not a bad thought. Will take a note. Spring seems far away today tho. It’s minus 2.
HI, I love your video jsut make me cleaer what to buy, except one thing, how long it take Horsehdie jacket to break in to comfortable and daily wear condition?
I gotta know where that Portland jersey is from. I live here & I've never seen one
From your local hero’s. Dehen 1920.
Cowhide has more tensile strength because cows grow in size a lot in comparison with horses, jacket we’re made out of horsehide in the 20’s - 40’s because the agricultural means of production used more horses than now days that we use machinery to do horse jobs.
Steerhide is stiffer in comparison to cowhide and requieres a break in period the same happens to horsehide, they both have very different patina compared to cowhide but that depends on tanning process.
Every company uses different hides and processing so a horsehide jacket from Schott will be very different in tanning process and hide feel compared to a buco real McCoy horsehide jacket.
Old jackets horsehide or steerhide had an amazing patina because of the tanning process that had a tea or brown core the jackets now have a dyeing that goes to the other side so they won’t distress as cool as they did.
If you want to break in a leather jacket fast ride in a motorcycle with rain and sun, 1 single 8 hour ride with sun and rain would break in the leather and make it look amazing that would normally take years to achieve. Don’t fake the patina or the break in process with bathtubs or drying machines you need the jacket to break in with you inside to fit like a glove and to develop the perfect patina
Would advice to oil the leather in bending points, like front zip and sleeves around the elbow. I have done that and the jackets feel a lot better than if not oiled
Could we get a best leather jacket brands vid for those of us (me) who don’t know much and looking to purchase in near future?
Sure mate. It’s a great idea.
Do you know of any t-core horsehide jackets, where the t-core pops out out fast and has a nice look after short time like Fine Creek Leather but not so pricy.
Hmmm. Fine creek use Shinki horse hide as far as I know. That’s expensive stuff. All brands that use it are around the same price or more. Simmon Bilt used it for a while and perhaps still do. Maybe hit them up and ask. They will find you something for sure.
Does anyone own a Wested brown horse hide jacket ? do you have any pics ?
I’d be curious about that too
What´s the song in the intro tho?
It’s just something downloaded from these huge royalty music sites. Nothing in particular.
Wish real mccoys made things for bigger doods! Its a gaaadam shame i dont fit in anything bein 6’4
Try Field Leathers or Himel Bros. They will make you a bespoke jacket in horsehide. Worth the price.
If you want to break them in easier, i guess it would be great if you oiled the rigid sections of the jacket (Sleeves in elbow zone and leather around main zip) Greetings lml
Because of your channel I got back on buying Denim I just picked up 3 Nudie Jeans Jacket and 3 Nudie Jeans. I pan to get at least 20 Denim Jacket & Jeans and will pick up 2 leather Jackets and 1 leather vest Horse hide is what I'm going for
that's a solid list! 20 pairs of denim is a lot - spend time shopping and finding the fit FIRST, then get into fabrics and other stuff. that being said, do whatever you want and enjoy! It's great going after and procuring grail pieces.
@@DRoche7 I stuck to only to fits in the nudie line and I go for the older jean jackets. So far now I'm up to 10 jeans and 3 jean jacket. Half way their I just want 20 jeans and 10 jean jacket after that 2 more leather jacket and that's it.
What horse leather and cordovan brand would you recommand for good or top quality ?
Aero
@@TigreJoe1994 any other ?
Cordovan is not a type of leather - its a colour. Shell cordovan on the other hand is made out of the buttocks of a horse. Shinki Hikaku and Horween are two of the best tanneries that produce such leather.
@@miracleman. thank you
I have a feelign that you generalize to much about horsehide and steerhide based on the two jackets you own. In reality the differences between horse and steer from the same tannery are very small. There are far more differences in wheight, feeling and stiffness between horseside from two different makers. In other words the tanning process has a bigger influence on the stiffness, character and feeling of the the hide than the animal it comes from. I can only reccomand you to ask different a jacket makers for leather samples. You will see and feel it first hand.
you're right dude. this nerd doesn't understand anything about leather or jackets at all... the jacket in this video sits terribly on him. as if he took it from his older brother ..
If you want to hug your friends?! You mean if you want to hold onto the handlebars of the motorcycle you’re riding while wearing the motorcycle jacket?
Great advice.
It's better in a fight...Got it.
Don't you ever downplay cowboy boots!!!!
😂😂👢👢
thanks for this!!!
Very welcome.
Great video!
Thanks Wilson. Appreciate it mate.
Biker rings next?
Still in the works.
. . You are right to much denim . . Clicking off Eh! ! Don't even have the time to just advance time . . .
No one has any choice but to advance time.
If you want to make the jacket fit, soak it in the bathtub, the wear it as it dries. Repeat that a couple of times. It would mold on your body type.
Great video, amazing jackets.
kangoo leather best both

Five minutes before FINALLY getting to the subject!
Two minutes of useless blather followed by three minutes of why leather.
Then two minutes to finally say, one is not better than the other.
First
Yes you are.
Kangaroo leather
Never had much to do with it. Was a big thing when I started riding bikes but seemed to fade away in the 90s.
so long Intro
The intro is so long or goodbye intro?
Great video!
Thanks Matthew. Appreciate it.
