Great advice Del! Isn't it funny how times and styles have changed over the years as well. Compare the fits that were popular in the 1950's vs. the oversized clothing of the 1990's. Both of those jackets fit you really well.
So different! Just take a stroll down Aero's catalog and you can see fitment changing with the different eras. As to the advice, thank you! You may very well want to claw out your eyes if you do a youtube search for "leather jacket fit" and listen to all the bad overly specific advice out there lol
Love watching your videos because we are so very close in chest measurement, height, weight and body type. I have been seeking a Schott jacket but already have a Fidelity motorcycle jacket that fits me perfectly. It looks great but I struggled with it not being a Schott. Now I love my Fidelity after wearing it a lot. Thanks for the videos, brother! Keep it up.
Thanks Joshua! Fidelity made some cool jackets. My understanding is their quality varied but some real gems. Even the “lower quality” ones still have a nice fit and good vibes. As for fit, I know exactly what you mean 😂 A few friends are around my size or exactly one up or down from me, makes things easier once you figure it out a bit
Really great video! I just got a Schott 618 about a week ago and its breaking in nicely thanks to your advice video, thanks for the work -- can't wait for fall to finally hit here!
Both jackets look great. I actually prefer the slightly oversized jacket, because they’re so easy to move in. One thing I personally might avoid in the future for me is quilted lining. I think I like the wool or flannel lining as with the Indian Ranger (Aero). Now that’s a dreamy jacket!!
a vest should fit under it, because leather jacket and vest combo rocks, same with chunky turtleneck should fit under it because the combo also rocks, to me the sign of over size jacket is the neck hole, if the collar fits nicely then the jacket will look nice, if the collar is loose then the jacket will appear too big. nice vid!
@@stefanhnavetsea1588 haha yes! Knowing how you want to wear it and sizing appropriately. I’ve noticed too you have a great eye for details like the collar / neck hole. Thanks Navetsea!
First, this is excellent advice, best I have ever seen in a video---your trim fit vs layer differential is exactly what I've learned too over the years. Sizing down is dumb. The next key measure is across the rear shoulder to shoulder; and this is where excellent Japanese brands may be a bit smaller than, say, a Schott. I would suggest one take a jacket that fits well---even a blazer or suit coat---and measure that shoulder to shoulder seam (and account for any padding!) The shoulder has as much to do with layering as the chest, which you know well. Also, perhaps next time we could see the larger of the two with a chunky sweater or two layers?
Interesting. Thanks. I’m also a 40 chest, but taller than Del at 6’2”. I also live in a cooler climate where I rarely wear just a t-shirt under my jacket. I find that size 40 for an outer jacket is almost always very small. I will usually get a 42 for a trim fit and a 44 for a fit with lots of winter layering.
At 5'8" and 190lbs with a muscular build, I could have used this when I ordered my first real full grain leather jacket. I have three now. The first is a medium, and the other two are larges. The length of the medium is good, but it's tight. Double rider and trucker style jackets are shorter than regular jackets anyway, so the larges aren't too long for me.
Yes for me it was all a shot in the dark with first purchases. Even so there are still surprises; my Aero Highwayman fits very comfortably with about 23" chest. Due to the weight of the leather and restrictions from the design much smaller than that would be too tight
@DudsByDel Yes, with the first jacket I bought it based on my chest measurements but forgot to take into account that I'll be inside the jacket, so the jacket measurement has to be bigger than my chest. Also a lot of the models for jackets tend to be tall skinny guys which doesn't help me.
Hi, love your posts.. what would you recommend for a 47 chest with the SchoTTS 613 SH Horsehide.. I would like a wide shoulder width and the Schotts website recommends a 48 slim and a 50 standard.. However i don't want it too big on the tummy or too long in the back.. Ty
@@winedave5454 hey Dave! I have about a 40.5” chest and have a size 40. If you like the look of my fit I’d go with the 48. If you do buy from Schott, would be fantastic if you used my affiliate link. It’s in the description or here: www.schottnyc.com/products/leather-motorcycle-jacket.htm?partner=MrFrown
I bought the Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket collaboration with Golden Bear. They said my measure would be XS but I feel that it is only comfortable if it is open. It can fully close but I feel pressure in my chest. Also it looks that the chest stretches if I close it and put hands in pockets. Would you say I need to size up? Some people say that the leather will stretch and that the slim fit is ideal… but I am not sure. Do leather jackets really stretch?
It does sound like you may need to size up. Did you have a chance to measure your chest and take the chest measurement like I showed for the Schott jacket?
I think it is definitely too tight. I already placed a return. Will drop it tomorrow at UPS. My chest size is 38 and this jacket was size 36. The chest was 19.5 (39)… I guess I just had 1 free inch but was not enough.
I live in South Texas, leather jackets and the weather here, no good... For some reason I spent some money three years ago on a "negan" jacket, for Halloween, thinking hey, I'm getting a leather jacket, it just happens to be two weeks before Halloween. Thinking hey I kinda do really look like him don't I? I'm 5'10", 167lbs....but like a 42. Long story, on Halloween, it looked hella cool. ANY other day, it's really difficult to pull off sporting that jacket. Seeing it on someone else besides Negan... Jacket is staying in the closet.🤟✌️🤙
I have a 47-inch body chest, but when I get a size 46 jacket, it's always fits too big on my chest and waist. If I go down to size 44, it would probably be too small on my shoulders, and because I'm 6"2, the sleeves are going to be too short! Man, the frustration of having a nicely built athletic body!!😢😅
I Have Multiple Leather jackets and I prefer a slim fitting style in a true to size large. So that way its trim fitting but NOT tight. That way I Can Layer. I can fit a hand under it when halfway zipped. For my first jacket I Got a "Second Skin" and although it looks great it is a bit uncomfortable and I STILL have some trouble moving. Breaking it in did not Magically solve everything.
@@nofillergamingknight7319 it’s a good point about tight fit looking good- oftentimes folks see a great look, whether it’s on someone else or in the mirror, but unfortunately it’s too tight to wear comfortably.
Hi Del, I often find new biker leather jackets armholes cut into the underside of the upper arm slightly when I try them on. Should they be avoided, or does the armhole usually soften up enough to wear comfortably? These are often horsehide jackets Im trying on.

Its beyond frustrating to find a proper fitting jacket. Brands like schott make jackets to fit the average guy, then their slim fits are slightly less average. Then i have a mutant build so its damn impossible. I wish custom jackets weren’t nightmarishly expensive.
