SHEEPSKIN vs DOWN WINTER JACKETS - What is the Right Choice for You?

  • In my opinion, once the temperature gets down bellow -5 we have 2 options. Sheepskin (shearling) jackets or down jackets. Both materials are amazing at keeping you warm. Both come in a variety of styles so you should be able to find something that works for you. And both have pros and cons.
Let's go over 6 points to help you decide between shearling or down for your next winter jacket.

Both have different purposes. I won't take my shearling bomber jacket on a hike. That's where I'll have my down jacket in my backpack. When there's exercise involved it's easy to overheat and you need to stash the big jacket away. A shearling jacket doesn't stash easily. When it comes to low movement such as driving at -10 c with windows down, winter camp with bonfire, walking slow through brush, going to the bar etc, its the shearling jacket. The shearling jacket is my daily winter jacket to work, around home, playing with kids in the snow. I use it 90% of winter to my down jacket at 10%. It's tough, ultra warm, looks amazing and will most likely outlive me. The down is often a backup in my car for exercise or for car breakdown for others.

I bought my sheepskin coat from The British Sheepskin company! They have a great website and it has already lasted 5 years of British winters for me! Far more than the down North Face jackets that I bought which were like wearing a bin liner and we’re not as durable or moisture wicking than the natural shearling. True it’s not waterproof but I just use an umbrella anyway.

I have a black m51 fishtail pattern parka from China. They're really popular there and they come with interchangeable liners and hood fur. You can get rabbit fur, synthetic and down liners for them. Bought the fur and synthetic liners (down tends to come out in the wash) as well as 2 real and 4 faux fur ruffs. However, this is something I would wear on vacation. In the city, even down to - 15 C, I like to wear 24-32oz wool long coats and pea coats. As heavy as sheepskin but lower maintenance and more durable.

This is what I’m saying. Almost like a gun for self defense. Big out right purchase, lifelong value if maintained properly!! It really would pay for itself over the years. Wool doesn’t do it, down has its downs lel. Shearling it’s best value for $$$ over time. If you live in a cold climate & whether intend to stay or not, a quality, life saving, and convenient winter coat is necessary for any family or person.

If you are buying a down jacket for very cold conditions, look for non sewn through baffles(or box baffles) this prevents the down from migrating, while eliminating the cold spots created by sewn through baffles. A technique also used in high quality down winter sleeping bags.

I love Berlin. Wonderful city. Lots of WW2 history. I was there in 2012. You can still see battle scars on a lots of the buildings. I’m assuming you’re now in Berlin per the video. Your videos are great👍 I’ve got both. Sheepskin is great ( I’ve had both the B-6 from Eastman and Real McCoy D-1 when they were made in NZ). But my Patagonia down and my 1996 retro Nuptse North Face are best in really cold weather here in Alberta Canada. Originally used them for belaying when ice climbing. Easily packable and easy to carry in a pack when not in use. You should really have both

The cruelty aspect of non ethical down would make these cheaper jackets a no go for me.

Sheepskin is leather, getting it wet from snow can damage it. You can't roll around snow and do snowball fights with it. There's a reason why fur coats have the fur on the outside.
A 600 or more fill powered down parka is superior to sheepskin in terms of pure warmth. The polyester shell and nylon lining, however, is a turn off when it comes to eco-friendliness. Sure it is water repellent, windproof, sweat wicking, etc but it goes against my principle of trying to be as natural as possible. But that's just me nitpicking like a spoiled tree-hugger.
Then there's the waxed cotton/wool shell with cotton lining down parkas like Manifattura's. Even more expensive than traditional synthetics. I'm tempted to try it next winter but I'm concerned about my sweat soaking through the cotton lining and weakening the insulation.
There's also the wool filling used instead of down. I wonder how it will function compared to down or shearling...

Problem with heavy winter clothing is it is bulky so elevators and cars will be a challenge. They aren't fashionable, but they'll keep you warm. @@jacklll2631 I'm gonna chime in. I live in Romania, and i think it gets a little chillier than Germany.I have a sheepskin that i had worn at -20C with just a shirt underneath. That's it.Normally i just wear a tshirt,if you can believe it.
As i am a leather aficionado, this being my second sheepskin, plus other leather jackets, leather by itself is cold as ice in chilly temperatures.
You don't have to look for the thickness of the leather, but of the fur that's attached to it. It kinda makes a small difference. But i assume most sold online are thick enough.
Another thing that i would suggest is to look for a model that you can zip up all the way-it's extremely useful. The ones that have a full zipper from top to bottom, have also wide collars. That means that if you zip it up all the way,it goes to your eyes.Just a beanie on top,and you're isolated from the elements.Only your eyes are visible,ha ha. No need for neck scarfs, and other cumbersome things. And nothing gets through the leather, not even water.
I'll post you the links on the website were i bought it from,it's really good quality, highy recommended. Plus it's way cheaper than what you can get it western europe or CanUsa.
      www.aavesa.com/product/men-sheepskin-jacket-323p/
This is the exact model that i have, and it's the black one. Full black. That's another thing i recommend, get one that's dark. I had a brown one(brown leather and brown fur) and it gets kinda colored, after a while(white fur is even worst). With a dark leather and dark fur one,you don't have that problem-it stays dark for ever, and muck and dirt are not visible(pure black it's the best, like i have). Also,if you look at an very old bomber jacket, the leather stayed ok(dark color) but the fur looks very oldish. That's my 2 cents on that. But feel free to browse that site, they have more "expensive" models too. I went to Australia and was shocked how expensive a jacket like mine was,3-4 times the price, and the design was more flimsy, even.
Also to note,it's heavy,as all are. BUT tough, like no other.
Apparently the company delivers worldwide,so probably can be sent your way. The idea is if you buy from from somewhere in Eastern Europe,it's gonna be cheaper. Way cheaper. Also,if you buy it from your country in the west, avoid fashion brands made sheepskins. They are obscenely priced-if you go local,go for a brand that specializes in these things.

@@jacklll2631 Of course, hope it puts things in perspective. Ah,and btw i would recommend getting one with easy acces to pockets(if they have a zipper is ok),they come in useful.Almost all sheepskins don't have interior pockets keep that in mind.
Another thing to look for is where the main zipper is,if they have a windbreak,so to speak. A small layer of fabric (leather behind the zipper,so wind desn't come through. It's not a biggie at all,but kinda helps.
Also,i suppose you can look at second hands in your area, maybe you can snuck up on a cheaper one, that looks nice. Thrifts stores and all that.
They look awesome anyways, and are quite durable for decades. If you look at what northern tribes wear,it's always a form of natural stuff. Now imagine a jacket like this, made from reindeer. That would be even warmer,i suppose.

bison, water buffalo, cowhide are all better options than sheepskin due the fact that the leather is cheaper - the prices that you mentioned are inflated through the rough. You can pick up quality leather for far FAR cheaper than what you're listing. As for down jackets, meh...

@@CeeAreDee im honestly not enitirely sure. I don't post disrespectful stuff. Just the truth. Companies like LVC and LL Bean that sell stuff based on their former image at inflated prices is really bothersome to me as I live not far from where LL Bean used to manufacture their clothing and also 20 minutes from the Southwick clothing factory that just closed and it breaks my heart. I dont actually remember having any sort of disagreement with you directly.

3000 eur totally worth it?!? Are you kidding? Maybe only if you want to go hunting penguins, but other than that any reasonable winter jacket (fur is best) won't cost you much more than 500,-. Jesus Christ, no wonder all prices are skyrocketting if people start to believe paying 3000eur for a jacket is something normal.

I've purchased two sheepskin coats from that famous online auction website. Both coats were in excellent condition and have been lovely these past few winters and were under fifty quid each.
Would recommend to anyone who doesn't quite have the budget of a new jacket. Still get the classic style and helps to reduce waste a tiny bit. Win-win.

In the 1970s when L L bean had quality clothing, unlike now, they sold the Polar Parka, godd to minus 70 degrees. It blows away the sheepskin. Sorry leather lovers
