  • Hey Good People,
Working with the 2008 Cadillac CTS again. Now that I have fixed the mistakes done by last person who touched it, (see video here: • Bolt Broke Off In Inta... ) I can start diagnosing the original problem the customer was having that prompted him to attempt to fix it himself.
In this video, I go through my diagnostic process to discover the issue with this engine. Spoiler Alert, it doesn't end well lol.
    Tools From The Video:
    amzn.to/3d4vrp0 : Engine compression tester/spark plugs tester
    amzn.to/3FXoToh : Autel obd2 scanner
    amzn.to/3FQkDai : mechanics tool set

I have rebuilt around 30 of these 3.6 gm engines the LY7,LLT, and LFX.. pretty much all the same. I have seen the chains break and not damage the valves. What you do is remove the cam caps on the problem bank (taking all down pressure off values) and you shoot compressed air in each cylinder.. if air comes out intake or exhaust.. you guessed it (bent valves) if not your better off installing a timing chain kit.. even with bent valves, broken pistons, snapped rods.. in my opinion your best bet is overhaul the engine.. salvage yards charging 2000 to 4000 for a used engine is ridiculous considering the engine may only last a couple months.. just my opinion..

Mane I appreciate this video a lot, I hope I’m not running into this same issue as I just bought one and it drove completely fine when I bought It …by the time I drove 30m home it got really rough a mile away from home had to pull over until I got it back going and it made it, so I guess I’ll be removing those few screws to check Cams as of now, thanks for the great video mane 💪🏾

I had an 08 STS with the 3.6, and It had over 200,000 on it when it got written off. The only running issue I ever had was 3 coils went bad after 2016. When the First Coil went south, the Stealership also diagnosed some Codes that implied the Chains had stretched. Dealer supposedly replaced them, at GM's Expense. Overall, I had very little trouble from the DI 3.6, it was a peppy little Engine, and still gave good Gas Mileage on the Highway. The STS though, very Harsh Ride that wasn't Cadillac like at all, my Kidneys still hurt

I would imagine there are bent valves. The head would definitely need valve guides, valves, and a valve job. New timing components on both banks. By the time you add up parts and labor a low mileage engine is definitely more cost effective. Great tip on just removing the cam sensors to check if cams are turning or not.

You think it might be something in the TCM or ECM??

Hi Alex, my 07 CTS has a misfire on #4 that's constant P0300 & P0304. On live scanner data I can see an occasional misfire on #2 but no code for that specific cylinder. New plugs & coils did not fix the problem. I was looking at the fuel banks on live data, (at idle) bank 1 is -1 to -10% for FT Avg. while bank 2 is +1 to +12 FT avg. Is it normal for the numbers to be negative on one bank & positive on the other? I'm trying to figure out if it's a fueling issue, any thoughts?

I wouldn’t say “good” I’d say they are “ok” if properly maintained. You have to baby these cars and stay on top of the maintenance. The biggest thing is the timing chain. It’s common that they go out on the 3.6 engines and is a costly repair. Hope this helps.
