Pasteurisation is not necessarily heating to really high temperatures. We pasteurise at 80C which admittedly does remove some of the Vitamin C but laboratory tests have shown that none of the phytonutrients and anthocyanins have been removed.
Pasteurization is done at 160F in the US. If that were hot enough to destroy nutrients, we'd all die of malnutrition from eating cooked foods. You might dislike the taste of pasteurized orange juice flavored with orange oil, but there's nothing unhealthy about it.
Giovanni Roverso It would be better to eat the whole orange so that you're getting the fiber content, yes. But a small glass of OJ here and there isn't going to give anyone diabetes either.
After having worked in the citrus industry of Florida, and abroad, I can say that there are certainly things going on behind the scenes that would cause a few heads to spin if more people were to know. The one that worries me the most is the citrus disease, greening. Grove caretakers are forced to drowned their trees with five times more nutrients/chemical food just to keep the trees alive. I won't even go into the threat this poses for Florida's water table. Then again, I'm not an expert in agriculture, but it's enough to question tap water.
I get these natural Apple juice boxes for my son, they taste like water with Apple flavoring added. And the no sugar added Apple sauce at the store tastes terrible. It really drives me nuts because my grandpa has an orchard and we made everything from pressed cider to applesauce, we never added any sugar and it was just delicious. The cider would taste so vivid it's like biting into an apple. It really makes me question the quality of apples these companies use...
I live in Florida. We have a huge number of choices when it comes to orange juice. I was in a store the other day and they were selling one gallon jugs of fresh orange juice for $3 but in another part of the store selling a generic brand of orange juice in 48 oz bottles for $4. But I have found I actually like the taste of frozen concentrate and just mix it myself and save money but I also mix it with grapefruit juice and find that has a nice flavor. Years ago I had a neighbor who had a huge orange tree that bizarrely had basketball size oranges. They had so many oranges they told neighbors to help themselves. One orange produced nearly a gallon of juice and it was soooooo good. I have never seen them in stores and I found out that stores don't like selling them because nobody wants giant oranges. For three months out of every year we had free orange juice.
+nunya biznez Do you think we are totally retarded, a gallon from an orange? Statistical data on large watermelon juice: "a watermelon weighing around 9.5 kg (about 21 lb) contains just over 7 liters (nearly 2 U.S. gallons) of water!" and you can't possibly compare water content of a 21 lb watermelon even to the largest of oranges
Excellent, information, straight to the point, honest, no bulls**t video. Information like this needs to be communicated more to the people. Amazing to find out about the flavor packs! What an eye opener! Even "100% Orange Juice" labelled products are processed foods. I only came across this video by accident. Do you have any books written on undressing foods in general?
I make my own fruit/veggie juice at home every day with a masticating juicer. I never knew how bad the process for making some things was until after I gave them up. But it made me all the happier! I love my fresh juices. They make me feel sooo good and they've made a huge difference in my health. It's definitely an investment in your health and a complete change of life style to go from processed easy stuff to taking that kind of responsibility over your diet and food but it's also incredibly rewarding, =) Thanks for the video!
I think I found the happiest person in the world! lol I thought I knew about OJ but apparently I had NO idea, this was a very shocking tell all. That process is so artificial, beyond the point of fraud, and it's legal?! That's just depressing. Thus going back to my original statement, how do you stay so happy when exposing things like this? It seems like depression would follow after knowing that millions of people are being mislead everyday. However, this is a great UA-cam channel idea! Keep bringing light to these things.
+Alan Heath It's not in the ingredients list because a flavor pack is made up of orange oil that comes from the same oranges used to make the juice. It's literally 100% oranges.
I normally always squeeze my oranges, but in summer when the oranges are dry due to the lack of rain, I normally buy packed orange juice. I am very sceptical about it and now when I see the process I just want to switch to another type of juice, or maybe milky juice. Thanks for the video
Thank you for this video. I am curious when you say that the "not from concentrate" juices contains flavor packs - wouldn't that be against the law from a labeling perspective? As I buy and drink "Florida Natural" and they say it's 100% juice without anything added. Appreciate your thoughts on this.
Glad you liked the video :-) In the 1960's it was ruled that added flavour was an “optional ingredient” and therefore didn’t have to be included on the ingredient list. To get more info about this you can check out my full article here. I answer some common readers questions at the bottom: bit.ly/1l1GXPA
Q. What is a flavor packet? A. To ensure that orange juice maintains a consistent taste and flavor, some orange juice brands work with flavor and fragrance companies to artificially flavor their juice using flavor packets. Made from orange essence and oils, flavor packets are added into juice to create a standard taste. While flavor packets might be chemically altered -- since they are technically derived from orange by-products -- they are not required to be listed as an ingredient. Q. What goes into a flavor packet? A. Technically flavor packs are made from orange-derived substances, such as essences and oils. Companies break down the essence and oils into individual chemicals and recombine them into flavor packs. so it's not guarder sicret!!! don't believe me google it
+Keshia Allred My source is Alyssa Hamilton who completed her PhD in orange juice studying the history and processing of Not From Concentrate Orange Juice. I encourage you to check out her book Squeezed. It's a great read. To be honest it's the initial processing that is done to the juice before it goes into the tanks and the added flavor they don't tell you about that concerns me more than the actual amount of time spent in the tank. Hope that helps. Have a great rest of your day. ~ Briana
Well, they heatup juice not to remove any harmful ingredients but to remove the water. It helps in removing almost 80% water from the juice and then it helps them in saving transportation cost. When it reaches to the region's factory then they add 70-80% water and lots of sugar and flavors in it to bring the taste back, then they pack it and sell. The only reason of heating is to save transportation cost because concentrate will take less space than ready juice. They do not care about our health but only about their profit. Well that's business.
So concentrate orange juice they evaporate the water out of the orange and >> '' not from concentrate '' they use the whole oranges squeezed - but heating and adding their flavour packs. wow I didn't know, i always thought ' not from concentrate' was the same as fresh juice !! lol... i learn something knew. thanks. they add vitimans- sugar in their packs unless it it says added . Question >>Are oranges called oranges because they're orange, or is orange called orange because oranges are orange? hehe,,, sorry im a little high on weed . but i loved your video thanks. :)
Hey Gyanam - thanks for the great question! Yes, when milk is pasteurized it loses some of it's nutritional benefits. This is why many people are advocates for raw milk. One of the elements that is easily destroyed when heated is the natural enzymes that help us to digest the milk. The reason milk is pasteurized is because it helps to kill off any harmful pathogens in the milk. These pathogens are typically found in the dairy because our dairy cows are not properly raised and/or the dairy is not handled with care on it's way to our homes. When produced properly raw milk is the better option (although it's more and more difficult to find properly produced raw milk that you can trust). In may states/provinces it's illegal. Hope that helps :-)
No, the temperatures used to pasteurize are only high enough to kill microbes so you do not lose vitamins and minerals are minerals you cannot lose them!
TheNakedLabel vitamins are added to milk during pasteurization and temperatures varies depending on what type of pasteurization the dairy uses such us ultra pasteurized normal pasteurization occurs at 167 degrees 165 degrees minimum also raw milk is tested for antibiotics and blood
NOTE: it is not because the animals are not taken care of. It is because they are mass producing and it is extremely difficult to make sure everything is clean. So they pasteurize it. Otherwise powerful bacteria can get in and potentially make millions sick and kill others as well.
relay high temperatures??? what... 160 - 180F is high??? (apr 80*C)and only for 0.6 - 6.0 sec there is the link to read it whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=dailytip&dbid=297
Most of juicers in stores they juice the whole oranges. I don't think the skins taste good. It's predictable those bottled juice done the same, coz it's '100%' and cost less.
Gude Balm They don't have to reveal the contents of the flavor, but they DO have to disclose if they use flavorings. That's why you see "Natural Flavors" listed in ingredients sections of food. The companies don't have to disclose these contents to the general public for obvious proprietary reasons, like protecting a secret recipe, much like Coca-Cola has done for over a century. The contents are still disclosed to the FDA to be assessed for safety
I have subscribed right after watching this. I love your enthusiasm (the dance! makes me wanna dance with you!), the positive energy and it's informational at the same time! Keep it up, Ms. Briana Santoro! Hope to see more videos soon! :)
Why are generalizing all companies? Vere unprofessional and biased. I work for a company mainly crushing fresh apples and grapes and we add no flavouring. The artificial or natural flavours are usually added to juices made from concentrate because they lack aroma.
This is the process of concentrate (possibly of "non-concentrate" from a large corp. misleading) im from ft. pierce, fl (there's indian river, Natalie's ochard island, and Tropicana there) and my family has been in the citrus industry all my life until the 3 hurricanes came back-to-back. And typically when for instance Natalie's makes thier juice its pure orange juice, not even water is added. And thats why it taste soooo much better, and costs about double the price of say simply orange or Tropicana.
I think she is talking about "from concentrate juice" .... Cause the one that isnt from concentrste,it is just squuezed fruit. Does this apply to oranges only ?
Or the whole "100%" juice industry is equally messed up I.e. grape, passion, guava etc

any comment on: not from concentrate pineapple juice? Does this video only apply to orange juice?

9.5 kg (about 21 lb) contains just over 7 liters
(nearly 2 U.S. gallons) of water!"
and you can't possibly compare water content of a 21 lb watermelon even to the largest of oranges
The person may have meant a quart, like you, I doubt they could get a gallon.
Pasturization highest temp is 160f for 15 seconds not "extreme tempetatures" water begins to boil at 210f
Does this apply to Not From Concentrate lemon juice, too? It can be stored at room temperature for 12 months from date of manufacture.
Can u please explain the difference between "from concentrate" and not from concentrate?
I want to know the best way to get pomegranate juice and it not be sugar water and devoid of its health properties.
Excellent, information, straight to the point, honest, no bulls**t video.

If a flavour pack is added, it should be in the ingredients list - unless the manufacturer has got round this by declaring a low portion size.
+Alan Heath It's not in the ingredients list because a flavor pack is made up of orange oil that comes from the same oranges used to make the juice. It's literally 100% oranges.

I See Your Point! But, Any Clue Were To Get Freshly squeezed Orange Juice In Alaska?
At realy high temparatures the orange juice would explode into a plasma.
Or what do you mean by "realy high temperatures"?
I had no idea our OJ went through such a grueling process. I need a juicer because I really like OJ.
Thank you for this video. I am curious when you say that the "not from concentrate" juices contains flavor packs - wouldn't that be against the law from a labeling perspective? "Sneaky marketing practices" ... So like your affiliate Amazon link in the description for example?
🤣
She tryna grab that extra $$$
My boyfriend was telling me about this tonight. So depressing
How do you know they're stored in big containers for up to a year? Could that be a practice of only one or two companies rather than industry-wide?

So you working with Alyssa Hamilton and want to tell ppl to buy book, good job ( not )
i can get a phd in oj? XD XD
@@Thenakedlabel so you're not really that concerned that it's in a vat for up to a year?? 🤨
but if all the flavor is from these "flavor packs" why do they need oranges in the first place?
So you they can call it orange juice
Just found this video and subbed. I finally found a channel that talks about this stuff. Please keep making videos just like this one.
The only thing that needs undressing is...
Well, they heatup juice not to remove any harmful ingredients but to remove the water. It helps in removing almost 80% water from the juice and then it helps them in saving transportation cost. So what about Tropicana orange juice I like it it tastes good and there saying they don't add sugar there using oranges from California
Most of juicers in stores they juice the whole oranges. I don't think the skins taste good. It's predictable those bottled juice done the same, coz it's '100%' and cost less.
What you´re talking about, is´nt that "from concentrate" juice?
If they all add flavours, why do the ingredients just say oranges?
+Gude Balm Hey buddy, a little correction here.. FDA stands for FRAUD and DEATH ADMINISTRATION see?.. It's the biggest BIG PHARMA client..

Wow! So when the ingredients on the label says orange juice and nothing else, it's basically a lie.
Thanks for the nice dance at the end. Don't know if you are the originator of this concept. Let's see if other UA-cam posters will start biting.
this woman must work for the oranges
thank you for pulling the curtain aside.......
I have subscribed right after watching this. I love your enthusiasm (the dance! makes me wanna dance with you!), the positive energy and it's informational at the same time! Keep it up, Ms. Briana Santoro! Hope to see more videos soon! :)

I been drink orange juice minute maid for year am I gonna die
Loved the video and the information! Thanks for sharing. The best way is certainly the natural way -- juice your own oranges for fresh orange juice.
So what you trying to say? I will still drink them.
I think she is talking about "from concentrate juice" .... Cause the one that isnt from concentrste,it is just squuezed fruit. I tought i'll some evidence to all those statements about how that orange juice is made, and don't get me wrong..you're just watching a lady talking about how orange juice is made,as she has seen all the factories aeound the world...
Great video-you were ahead of your time with this content!
Good video but what on earth was the dancing at the end about?
so its not really Orange juice its more like orange flavor when you drink in the twilight zone.
Well that answer my question on concentrated orange juice. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
This is a brilliant idea for a UA-cam channel.
this video was very informative I can't believe that even orange juice is fake thank you so much for making this video andbspreading the news to the world
thank you
Nothing is good then pretty much
Stop saying PRO-CESS! it's one word NOT TWO! LOL JEEZ. say it with me now process , process
Loved your presentation! Especially the dance at the end. I did not know this about OJ. Makes me think about some of the other things I've been eating and how it's processed. Thanks for the education. You've started me a road to healthier living. Thanks again.
+Lewis Schatzdorfer Glad To Hear That!
How I get my orange juice.
Go to my orchard.
Pick a ripe orange.
Take it back home.
Cut it in half.
Squeeze the orange in a cup.
That is how I do it.
Reagan Sarah we are some of the few fortunate people who can do that. So let's be thankful 🤗
so your are basically drinking Koolaid
you're talking about CONCENTRATE and not NOT FROM CONCENTRATE!
Thanks! Answered all my questions! Only fresh squeezed from here on in!!!
All i hear is her voice, not her words. Anyone else feel the same?
it has fascinated me thank you
Think I'll Just peel and enjoy eating a naked orange or grapefruit
Super informative 🍊🍊🍊
Does she mean FROM CONCENTRATE?
No, she's talking about NON-CONCENTRATED orange juice.
TheCornbeefsoup .... Which actually makes no sense because not from concentrate is supposed to be healthier and not have anything added to it!
Bonnie Lee Actually not from concentrate juice doesn't make it healthier nore unhealthy. Non-concentraded juice can still have additives in it like sweeteners. The nutrientional value of concentrated and non-concentrated juice is the same just different in how it's processed. "Not from concentrate" just seems "healthier" because it's marketed that way.
No. She means the stuff that they label "fresh squeezed, not from concentrate."
"Fresh" oranges.
love your video
Thanks Richard :-)
Interesting...
I'm never drinking juice again. Ima just eat fruit smh
OMG!!! I should have known.....
this is why I make my own or buy REAL orange juice, I can decide when it's real, if you don't have time I recommend you buy NATALIE orange juice.
Your'e a funny girl. I enjoyed your presentation, but I must ask what the Grey Goose to OJ ratio was that helped you bust out those citrusy sweet moves? Perfecto!!!
Omg "really high temperature"... You are really really need to change your occupation
Has the author of Squeezed been sued yet? Big business does not like this of course...
The thing that is so awesome about her book is that everything she talks about in her book is based on facts from government and legal documentation and research. It's not an opinion piece it's a fact/research piece. As far as I know orange juice companies aren't thrilled with her book but she has not been sued. In my opinion, it's a bit hard to sue someone for listing facts in a book :-)
TheNakedLabel You'd be surprised. This is an interesting thing that happened to a guy doing a documentary on Dole
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananas!*
Best part of video is the white girl dance
I cant win. I quit soda but turns put OJ is not good for you
You're the Best!!!!
Skip the juice and eat an orange.
Why would you buy that carton rubbish when the fresh thing is delicious. 🙄
wonder what her husband does to pay for this?
Too much exaggeration.
Who drinks orange juice trying to avoid the sugars, all this losing weight shit only affect women. Not from concentrate just means it’s real juice
I just wanted to see some naked fruit.. This video is very misleading
OJ? She is so cute
I was hoping you would make your own squeeze.
Would have been nice to see you taste a glass you pressed out with your bare feet
Prawcess
Why is she have to swallow so much saliva!?
James Behncke ..... Probably because she's talking really fast and when you talk really fast your saliva sometimes builds up but you really shouldn't be focusing on that you should be focusing more on the subject of the video!
PRO cess
I love her. I only have one word regarding this topic: wow. A sad wow.
oh white people..we really need some dance lessons. my god
malik atta ...OMG, she's just being goofy!
Fake news.
why no subsciber
She has the most annoying facial expressions
