    Okay, what happened politically towards the end of this episode is actually very interesting.
    Harold Hardrada gave a bunch of council positions to English Dukes to keep them in line - with the current laws, council members can't be in factions. Then Duke Morcar basically gained the allegiance of all those English Dukes, and somehow gained a favour from King Harold Hardrada himself. He then went to war and used that favour to basically force the King to join his war, only doing so went against another kingdom law - the King cannot declare war without council approval. Because (thanks to Morcar) Harold Hardrada didn't have that approval, it caused the council to become discontent. A discontent council means many things, most importantly, it means that council members can now enter factions. And that's exactly what they did - joining a faction to further increase council power.
    Basically, Morcar forced Harold to start a vote to go to war, made sure that vote failed, Harold was forced to go to war anyway because of the favour, and the council and other vassals now don't like him for that. And best of all? Not only did they increase council power because of this, but Morcar got himself a lovely new county to boot.
    CK2, ladies and gentlemen.

      I'll admit to being not 100% on when de jure claims can be activated - does Norway's possession of the title of King of England mean that nobody can make a de jure claim for England, because anybody who could is already under Norway and thus would have to fight an independence war first...?

    • @Superkid3112
      @Superkid3112 6 років тому +244

      Many A True Nerd No, nobody ought to be able to push for a de jure claim on England, because technically speaking, all of England is still under the de jure Kingdom of England. Hardrada is King of both Norway and England, two seperate kingdoms each with their own territory; because they are equivilant titles (i.e. both kingdoms), only one is shown on the map as Hardrada’s Primary Title. However, there will be a great deal of conflict over culture, as the Anglo-Saxons aren’t too keen on following the law of a Norwegian king.
      Also, on an unrelated note, educations (i.e. Midas Touched) are not inherited based on what the parents have, but rather are selected based on a child’s educational focus (which of the five stats you decide to focus on at age 12) mixed with the skill of the educator and a healthy dose of random chance.
      Loving the series Jon and I appreciate the response. Just a bit of loving backseat driving from someone with a few hundred hours in the game.

    • @kierancullen8161
      @kierancullen8161 6 років тому +33

      Many A True Nerd I sort of already touched on this in another comment but de jure means that the owner of a title can launch a war for any de jure county under that title. In this case Hardrada can launch a war for any province of England which is not already under him but also any dukes under Hardrada can launch wars for any counties under their de jure duchies as well as long as those counties are not owned by them or their vassal. If a foreign realm owns the land the duke can launch the war and if a different duke owns the land they can also launch the war.

    • @terex8016
      @terex8016 6 років тому +22

      Many A True Nerd De jure only really is important when it is not owned fully by a character. So if say scotland owns a county which is de jure part of the kingdom of england then the king of england will have a cb to take it and put it back where it "ought" to be. After about 150 years though the territory will be considered to now be dejure

    Jon the only traits which can be inherited are things like strong, weak, genius, quick, or inbred, if the icon is heart shaped it can be inherited but otherwise it won’t be, to pass on traits like Midas touched have the person with the trait educate children over the age of 12 until they are 16

    • @kierancullen8161
      @kierancullen8161 6 років тому +57

      Ooh also don't try and press claims against dukes, if you press someone else's claim and they are the same rank as you they will always form an independent realm outside of your influence, if they are below your rank then they can become your vassal but only in extremely limited circumstances such as if they are already a landed vassal of yours. Generally it isn't worth bothering with it.
      Furthermore succession law wise don't go for elective gavelkind go for elective, it's a bit harder to get but is far superior, your sons will be a bit annoyed that they don't get land but you can pick your successor and all of your land will go to them.
      Also also don't bother going into the gates unless you're unhealthy yourself or the black death is coming, otherwise it's generally not worth bothering as the effects on you are large and the chance of dying is small although some people would say that your current family is small enough to warrant hiding from smaller diseases

      Also also also the invite to court buttons for holy men and such are for people who are of minority religion or cultures which would have difficulties getting people to court, e.g. if you happened to be a Jewish Norwegian cannibal you'd have difficulties getting people to come to court so the buttons could save you

      Sorry for keeping to add more things but I've put too many hours into this game but generally I would recommend making as many babies as possible and making sure to marry yourself and your heirs to people with positive congenital traits such as genius, strong, quick or attractive. These traits are very very powerful, they can't normally be lost and provide a much higher baseline than usual making these characters more powerful than any others by far, when you start marrying people with these traits together you can get children with multiple traits who make great heirs. The aim is to make the übermensch as weird as that sounds.

    • @corvoattano9597
      @corvoattano9597 6 років тому +10

      It is also importanto to add that each education trait have 4 levels that are displayed by the little dots inside the traits, using the Midas Touched as an example it has 4 dots in the trait meaning its a level 4 trait, going down to Fortune Builder (3 dots), Thrifty Clerk (2 dots) etc.
      Having your children educated by a level 4 education trait only means you have a better chance of giving that trait to your kids (about 60/70%) they may also give them a level 3 ou 2 education or even a completly diferent Educantion trait all together (although it's a lot smaller chance)
      Something to also consider is that the child also as a chance of picking up his guardiars culture, example Jons current Steward is a Dutch caracter, any child educated by him will have a small chance of becoming Dutch, wich could cause some problems..
      Sorry for the huge side note Kieran :)

    Sorry, I usually wait to comment until the end of the video and I'm only four minutes in right now. But there's a thing with the map-modes that it's good to know but doesn't seemed to be mentioned anywhere in-game.
    If you're in realm map-mode, you can hold Ctrl and then left-click on a realm and it'll show the direct vassals of only that realm instead. Everywhere else will just show the kingdoms and what-not, but the realm you're apart of (or that you Ctrl Click on) will she vassals. You can also then click on a vassal the same way and see their vassals. It's very convenient and, as I said, doesn't seemed to be mentioned anywhere. Anyway, back to the video!

    The traits you were looking at aren't hereditary, they're the way the character has been educated. Midas touched is level 4/4 in the stewardship education, and fortune builder is 3/4. The way these are calculated are how well the education focus lines up with their childhood traits, and also (I believe) the stats of their guardian/educator.

    • @exantiuse497

    Hey as an experienced ck2 player I have a few tips:
    ALWAYS unless you have to make your sons have martial focus, if you need good stewarss etc just genetically breed them. Do you want to know why you should make your sons focus on martial? Because their martial score is directly related to how many troops you can field and if you have under 10 or 9 (can't remember) you get a penalty to the amount of troops you are shooting yourself in the leg by making them worse martial leaders. Btw when you raise your troops click on the army and you will see that you can assign to extra commanders to the army which will make them better at fighting in general
    Another thing that is just a request is that you don't need to stop the game for every notification in the game, if you keep doing doing that you will never finish the game, and if you need to pls don't Pause so Much you can comment on something without pausing the game every 30 seconds and not playing for 15 mins. Pls also play the game at speed 3 or 4 unless you need to.
    Also when changing laws remember that you also get a vote so if it's 2 for 2 against the law will pass because you also get a vote

    As a note for yourself about the Lollardy and the county where it was, there is a religious map mode that would let you see what religion each county is and where there is heresy too (The little cross button above the mini map in the bottom right)
    The names of counties can also vary when they are conquered by another culture (see York)

    that Midas touched perk is his level of education (steward, money maker) it isn't passed down to his children unless he teaches them but that's unlikely, its passed down to the children he tutors (its rare someone becomes Midas touched unless their already good at the skill the education affects).

    You might not have intended it, but these two episodes have worked out to be an amazing tutorial. It's really difficult to explain the how and why of mechanics in paradox games. You slowly introduce everything as you go through the game as it becomes relevant to you. And you connect it all to make a nice picture about what the game is and how you play it within that context. I've got plenty of experience with paradox games, so I didn't feel like this was a big info dump, but I feel like even people with fresh eyes to this would be comfortable with it. Especially if it was chopped down into four or five videos between different topics as you progress through the game. Thanks for the well made videos, this gives me a big itch to play CKII again rather than EUIV.

    I usually use the "Invite so and so to court" option if I grab a massive amount of land (Generally a kingdom in a crusade) and make them count's of some middle of nowhere that I don't want/don't care about, and want to keep the newly appointed dukes weaker than if I had given them all multiple counties. Just saves me time if I run out of good people in my court and don't want to search for 40 people lol.

    "midas touched" and other square traits are so-called "educational traits". They are gained purely from how you decide that your kids should be educated as well as how good their teacher is. Thus, if you want someone who grows up to be midas touched, you'll want to find a teacher that has that education level and give the child stewardship-aligned education-focuses.

    One of the reason's I like watching Jon with his channel is that he introduces me to strategy games that look interesting and so far has made me want to buy Rome Total War, Medieval Two, and now this. I'm sure there's a couple of games I can't remember (one of them sort of like a Tinder medieval game that has to balance four different aspects throughout the line of kings because you're immortal and took a deal with the devil) but nevertheless! Jon, if you happen to read this, thank you for giving amusing content with games that make me want to try in order to fall into the story (Fallout 4 survival) Or to play a game where I don't have much experience with the genre (Total War). These open worlds with cultural and military aspects are enjoyable. Thank you very much, and have a good afternoon.

    "Reign for 10 years" refers to your primary title-when you created the duchy you reset the timer because that duchy is brand new, so you've just now began ruling with that title. Should make law changes like that before forging a title and when fresh made it copies the laws of your primary title.

    • @OriginalSoulbourne
      @OriginalSoulbourne 6 років тому +1

      Also, heritage is only used to change religion/culture. If they're already the religion/culture of their mentor has no effect. Thats also why your king wanted to change your nephew to heritage focus-wanted to get rid of his cornwallis culture and make him a born and bred norwegian.

    The invite decisions in the intrigue tab generate a new character with associated stats, and your culture and religion. I always use it for commanders and for vassals when I have freshly conquered lands to give.
    Last time I used it I got a 28 martial guy with great traits, he lived until 98Y.O. and was ana amazing Marshall.
    And the nobles make great high stewardship money makers for vassals owning cities or castles.

    One benefit of the "Invite Noble" intrigue decision is that you get a character of your own culture and religion with no connections to any of your other vassals, when you've run out of those in the characters tab (a new character is created out of thin air). This is especially good when you need someone to hand out new land to, as they will be less likely to inherit more land later on and they usually have decent stewardship which is ideal for changing the culture of your newly acquired territory.

  • @SanguineSidereal
    @SanguineSidereal 6 років тому

    The utility of the invite noble button, and equivalents, is that it generates new characters of your culture and religion. It can be useful if as a previously small nation you find yourself needing to hand out a bunch of titles. For instance is you were to suddenly win a Crusade and be declared king of Jerusalem you might not have enough Cornish courtiers to actually fill up all the counties you suddenly have. Especially if you don't want there to be the immediate potential of weird inheritances as the created characters have no family.

    Final handy note bro if you havent spotted it already (for use for example in the case where you found a welsh guy with good claims for later), the little star on a character sheet, will mark them as special interest. If you then hover over the fold out bar to the far right you can set that to show characters of interest (tends to be all I put on there). It'll then also give you pop ups on anything interest characters do. saves me a lot of hassle especially when you start rping a bit and taking interest in various dynasties.
    As to why is there intrigue menu options for recruiting generated characters....trust....some starts you have 0 people that want to join you. Sure count of cornwall sounds insignificent but its pretty damn prestigious and theres plenty of like minded people hapopy to join you. Try starting as a berber pagan that owns a single county with only a single holding surrounded by mali africans and bedouin muslims xD Those kinda starts it can handy as all hell.

    Jon you invite people via intrigue tab because sometimes you can't invite anyone good to court, plus whoever you invite from that tab will be your culture and your religion, really nice when needing to make new vessels. Also you can occasionally spawn someone with like a 22 in a skill. Also if Norway holds England for about 100 years, the kingdom of England will cease to exist as a de jure kingdom, and the world will recognize England as de jure Norway.

    When you promote a commander, etc., they are always of your culture and religion. That means they'll like you more (and are less likely to rebel if you give them land), but they can be difficult to find if you're a small culture/religion. And when the Black Death sets in, it's likely that the world will run out of talented people who are willing to come to your court..
