this one actually made sense , since the change happened only 20 years ago when most of them were already alive and already in starfleet academy , so it makes sense for the same people to end up on the same starship as in the 'normal' universe . unlike the mirror universe when centuries of history are different and yet the same exact people are born and end up on the same ship by an unbelievable coincidence . so this was a much better "mirror universe" episode logically
Mirror universe works as a campy thing. It really only makes sense to have these people exist despite everything if it's some prank by a higher entity.
Did anybody else notice at 7:40, when Jordi and Gynan and back in the normal timeline, Jordi has on the Alternate timeline uniform(with the black cuffs)?
Yes! That's one of my few complaints about this episode. When it first aired, I was hyper focused on uniforms and made sketches of the alternate timeline uniforms during the commercial breaks. My teenage heart was screaming inside during that last 30 seconds of the show when she asks Guinan asks Geordi about Tasha.
Jordi retaining the alt timeline uniform is a well known gaff. Timothy, it is nothing to "complain" about, it's just an innocent mistake that (weirdly) was never caught in production. It certainly didnt mar a brilliant episode; it's just an affirmation that it is a fictional show produced by non-fictional humans that make mistakes.
You punched the air when Picard leaped over Tactical - I punched the air when I saw you'd finally got to this episode! Loving your work! If ever you needed a Trek-pastiche musical theme for the show, drop me a line and would happily work on that as a little thank you for the work you do!
Hahah.. do it.. My wife complains to me every time she hears the existing theme "music". And we have a lot of episodes to go, especially if they do any other Trek series after this. :)
Not really pertinent to this episode specifically, but it always bugs me when people say Tasha died "needlessly" or her death was "meaningless". She died on duty, in action, during an attempt to rescue Troi and the shuttle pilot who were being held by Armus (the Tar Monster). How is that "meaningless"? It's not like she slipped on a banana peel in 10-Forward.
I believe this is the first really top-notch, classic episode of the series, and I'm glad you two saw it for what it is -- because my opinion is reality, lol. But seriously, this would be in many fans' lists of top ten episodes of the entire show. And there are many more classics coming up (finally), you are in for a treat! It's easy to forget how many blah episodes the show had early on in light of its many later home runs. And I honestly love how critical you've been so far, with no rose-tinted glasses like I and others who first saw this show a long time ago probably have. I also love how funny these reviews are. Keep it up!
I think this is the first episode receiving two A's! This is also the first Star Trek episode spec script that was submitted by a non-professional screenwriter, go figure. I was sorry to see Denise Crosby leave the show in Season 1, but this episode wouldn't have been so awesome without seeing Tasha Yar again and Guinan getting spooked.
@@reverseangle If I was you I'd try to forget that the way the Enterprise crew forgets all their violations of the prime directive every time they want to sound smug about the rules.
Space rocks....they were trying to simulate a spalling affect, which is a real thing that happens to tank crews hit. Metal splinters can fly. Note the space rock turned into a blade in her skull.
My biggest complaint with this episode has always been that the Enterprise didn't put up a better fight, just seemed like fire two shots and let's take 30 in reply.
Ever since I first saw this episode, I've felt that the Enterprise-C looked better than the D. I really like the design of the Ambassador-Class starship.
Certainly one of the best so far in the series, though I'll be up front and say I grade a bit higher on almost every episode than you guys do. Picky picky.. :)
I always thought that if they ever did a Calvinverse remake of TNG, this episode more than most should be remade into a full fledged movie. I remember showing this episode to a friend a couple weeks after I got him into a show, and the fact that at the end, none of it mattered blew his mind.
I wonder what the Romulans thought about the different uniforms of Yar's (dead body) and the Enterprise C crew and what about the technology she had (comm badge, phaser, maybe a tricorder)? ;-)
Also, I think the fact that we don't see the Klingons at all really adds to the tension of the episode. Unlike normal Star Trek, there's no viewscreen diplomacy. We don't get to see the Klingon prespective. There's no hammy gloating evil Klingon they can trick or outsmart. Far scarier, they're a faceless threat that's winning.
There is a Hypothesis that Tasha Yar is part of the reason why Shinzon was cloned from Picard's DNA, in Star Trek: Nemesis. she told her daughter about the adventures of Jean-luc Picard as stories, long before he could become a widely respected captain and eventually admiral of the Federation. so that's why he was selected for the cloning process
If photon torpedoes could cause that rift then how were anomolies not popping up all the time during the Dominion war? Maybe that's why they switched to quantum torpedoes.. Until they forgot about them in nemesis.
"given that ship is going to be destroyed I don't think putting one person on it is going to make much a difference." I think everyone pretty much knows.

My absolute favourite episode. It's even almost a backdoor Mirror Mirror TNG episode like Voyager's Living Witness was. This is an A+ episode. "Enterprise! Drop shields and prepare to be boarded."

Truly a memorable episode, seeing Yar walk up really blew my mind when I first watched it.
One of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
They should have shown Worf as commander of a Klingon ship.

Yes. Surely nothing could possibly come about as a result of Tasha Yar traveling back in time. 😉
I like the lighting change. it feels... darker, more bleak.
I had some initial feels of 'mirrior universe' thoughts the first time I saw the episode.
7:40 and Geordi brought his alternate universe uniform with black cuffs with him to the new regular timeline.

Worf being the captain of the Klingon ship attacking them would have been epic
To coincidental, and unlikely to be senior enough. And no reason to believe wasn't killed at the Kittomer massacre, without a Federation rescue.
