Check out SDP page, Edgar Nalchadjyan's post about the A9 Banding... He has banding in mechanical shutter mode from a session he did with flash on... which prohibits the use of electronic shutter... He has also sent you a message on FB regarding the issue... severe banding in the RAW, no separation of red channels or anything

Your a professional. Shoot it off by 4.5 to 6 stops like the rest of us. You might find some banding when you bring it back in Lr. Like in the dark areas.
Remember back in the day when everybody thought you were a sony-hater and treated them unfairly. They finally hit it out of the park with the a9 and now people are saying you are a sony fan boy. Thanks for you honest reviews, I seriously count on you and Chelsea's feedback.
I've used mine at 4 weddings since I got it. No over heating, even in direct sunlight, including yesterday on the hottest day of the year in the UK with direct sunlight for 6-7 hours. No banding either. Most people talking about the a9 being x & y haven't got anywhere near one.
No, 32(90)
This is your experience. I am a working pro too and I have had an overheating warning during a ceremony. During the Hand Wrapping! Crisis center.
Indeed, and that is your experience. It sucks to get the overheating obviously, i'm not saying it hasn't happened, but my point is that this seems to effect some units and not others. If it was an inherent problem with the design of the a9 then it would be happening everyone. Seems Sony released a bad batch and some folk got unlucky.
This is frustrating to hear people consistently say that the problem doesn't exist when it obviously does but it's not widespread but it does exist
Some reviewers are in Southern California which could get to 40 degree C at some point, just saying. I've never had my A7Rii overheat on my despite living in the tropical area but the perfect combination of weather and manufacture variance can ruin someone's day.
a lot of people WISH the A9 had some sort of a fatal flaw so that they could validate their purchase, and by extension themselves. i personally have the A7R II, and while it has over heated on me several times, it's still the best camera I have ever used. some over heating is a compromise I can live with in exchange for getting much better images than i could ever get with my Canon cameras. and I will get an A9 at some point this year
I managed to find slight banding when pushing the exposure hard on a couple shots with the sun directly coming straight at the sensor, increasing saturation, and zooming in 100%. Zoomed out at all, it's not visible. It's totally a non-issue.
Thanks for endeavoring to be fair in your reviews and not out to advance a point of view.
Love what you do, thanks for this and your clear, professional perspective.
I'm Canon fan, but the amount of hate against the A9 is ridiculous.
THANK YOU!!!
Milan Djordjevich Maybe if I could afford a $4500, I might be peeved, but I'm poor so it doesn't matter to me. :)
Daniel Jones agree!! who's got time to hate?! people should just get one if they can; to compliment a DSLR. there is no right or wrong.
Daniel Jones That is exactly my position too.
They just cant afford it..
I had only one experience with Sony repair service. I'm not a pro, so I send a 70-200 f4 to be cleaned from internal dust under warranty. The lens spent literally one day at precision camera repair center and was shipped via FedEx express the same day it was repaired. The lens was completely cleaned, internally and externally at no cost to me. The only issue I had with Precision Camera was that I wasn't notified about the shipment of the lens and FedEx messed up. As a result, I didn't receive the lens until 3 days later. But even with that delay, the lens was serviced very promptly. I actually never thought it was going to be that quick. It's even faster than Zeiss US in this regard.
As always, thoughtful and fair. Love your work and your approach to your videos.
Those qualities a large part of why I watch his videos.
Good video, clear logical argument
keep up the great work.... it's tough when people take personal shots at you and question your integrity, you respond in your typical professional and factual manor. thanks again!
Wow, Tony I REALLY like your way of addressing issues. You deal with real world experience and facts. And that change of perspective ("flip it around") at the end is amazing. Keep it up!
I'd like to see people who are finding any problems actually post the link to verify the results. Give me a source to validate your argument. I'm glad Toni brought up that there's literally been one guy I have the overheating issue and one other source to show the banding issue.
l'm learning photography as a hobby, and to state, you guys have been a MAJOR help - thanks
Tony I just got into photography about a month and a half ago so I'm very new to this. I must say i always come back to your channel as you seem to be the most unbiased "reviewer" that i have come across. I shoot with an a6000 so i obviously want Sony to produce great cameras and glass, but if they don't, i need to know that as well.
Never have I seen so much negativity surrounding a product, it's like people are wishing/wanting the camera to fail. Guessing the Sony A9 will be camera of the year unless the A9r is even more impressive. The technology is advancing so quickly which is phenomenal for the consumer.
Yes lots of negativity (this camera creates fear) -- but this has also been on of the most positive camera launches in years. This camera is a look into the future. Sony hit it out of the park.
Owning a small business myself for nine years, i really enjoy your channel, and appreciate all of your guys hard work to make my life easier, keep up the good work
I am quite impressed that Chelsea & Tony are the real deal without sponsor funds from the big manufacturers. Hats off to you both! We will continue to watch.
Thanks for doing these types of videos Tony. It really helps when trying to decide which camera to buy. I've been shooting an A7 II and starting to get bored with it and thinking of upgrading to the A7R II or A9... Soaking up knowledge folks like you share will certainly help me decide where I spend hard earned dollars..
It's very likely that the pre-production beta firmware glitched on the red channel one time, but the Internet is such an echo chamber that everyone repeats what everyone else is reporting from one source so it's sounds like it happens all the time. This wouldn't be the first time it's happened with an electronic device.
I don't own a Sony camera by the way.
I thoroughly enjoy your reviews and videos, very informative and honest. I am a concert photographer, and plan to hire the Sony A9 to test it under the conditions I use the most. fingers crossed!
Keep up the great work!
I was already kind of on the fence but you convinced me with your list tbh. I've been letting to many of these issues slide with Canon and now they're just piling up if I see them laid out in front of me. Especially since I'm also doing both video and photo I just feel like I'm missing out. Now what to do with all that expensive Canon glass though. I don't wanna be stuck using Metabones. Eh this is not gonna be easy. Probably past of the reason why I convinced myself for so long that I'm happy with what I have…
I appreciate this video and info - Thanks Tony
Thanks, Tony. Haven't even finished the video yet and I agree with you. I started out in computers ( a pilot now ) and this is the industry now... There is cutting edge and bleeding edge. When new tech comes out there are issues. Tony is trying to provide a snapshot of what to expect. In the end word of mouth and reputation win. I currently am invested in kit from a major camera competitor and am SERIOUSLY looking at switching to Sony. Before I make the switch I will talk to Sony users, as an informed consumer should. If there are problems, see how Sony addresses it. To all, love it or hate it, these conversations are making manufacturers listen to what we consumers want. Keep it up, Tony!
Fantastic and well needed video. Thanks, Tony.
Nothing's perfect, but also nothing's as bad as what the a9 is being made out to be 😏
Thank you Tony for an unbiased video. It is good to have things put into perspective.
Do you have a Canon 85mm 1.2 to test the focus speed to see if it's usable for portraits? Eye detect that works well with such a shallow depth of field would be enough for me to make the switch.
I appreciate the breakdown. Thanks for the info!
Love the delivery. No non-words. Conscious effort or natural?
Can you plz talk about the color science of the A9 compared to Canon at later date? I currently use canon and love its colors. Also heard that if I used canon glass via adapter, A9 frame rate drops to about 10fps. Can you confirm this? And can you explain why that is? thx
I’m just amazed. I’m a late starter to photography but overtime I’ve graduated to the a9. Literally just got here today with some G Master glass and I’m giddy. I got to use it over the summer at a pro beach volleyball event in Long Beach and I ABSOLUTELY loved it. The 1/32000ss allows me to get creative and shoot with say the 85 g Master wide open at 1.4 in the middle of the day. I don’t hear much about that but man that is a real “NICE TO HAVE.” I agree with you about unbalanced amount of criticism, they seemingly overlook these glaring “opportunities” for Canon and Nikon. Oh well, made for a great video! Keep on truckin’!
Thanks for the honest update Tony!
i love how honest you are
Love your channel. You guys rock
Tony you guys have always been transparent with sponsorship and honest gear reviews. I don't know why people want to always find fault instead of appeciating the hard work and effort you put into creating unbiased reviews. Keep up the awesome work my silver haired photography hero. :)
great video and appreciate your engagement with the comments, even if some are illogical.
Ya'lls videos are like the only ones on UA-cam that I can watch till the end
Hey Thanks man for Video, i have one question can you Charge both batterie in the grip at once, meaning pluging the powercable in the camera and having booth batteries charged.?
ANTWORTEN
when youre the best & doing things others aren't , everyone likes to put you down & tell lies about you.
good on you Sony for bringing photography into the 21st century
Thanks for the info Tony
I pretty much switched to Sony two years ago and have appreciated the reviews from Tony and Chelsea. I also enjoy the reviews by the CameraStore. You folks do good work, thank you. I think folks should remember that the camera does not make the photographer. It is just a tool, and tools will change and evolve, so the service that Tony and Chelsea provide is welcomed. We have a competitive camera market, as a consumer, I think that is a good thing. Tony and Chelsea will keep you abreast of the changes so we can focus (no pun) on taking photos...
Well put. Thank you Tony
OMG did you see his Illuminati hang signal at 9.09 - It's confirmed, he's a Sasquatch android escaped from Area 51!
Let's face it, negative reviews and conspiracies generate hits on UA-cam channels. It's much easier than creating real useful information or informed reviews. Good information as always, thankyou Tony & Chelsea.
Yeah that 1camera guy went on a rant with no tests being done, he did it right away for views. I commented why didn't he contacted sony first, did more tests, talk to other users. He said he actually did it for views and attention. Can you believe that? He actually says that in his comments. Whatever gets you hard I guess. lol
I watched one guy go on a rant the other day (actually I only watched about a third of the video). He was a guy that supposedly switched back to Nikon. I doubt he even ever owned a Sony Camera.
Don't let the trolls get you down. Love the work you and Chelsea do. I just started following you a few months ago, but I absolutely respect and trust your opinions.
If you can't provide an evidence based or at least logically compelling substantiation of your 'questioning', it's just foolery. And logically compelling doesn't mean simply accusing everybody of corruption and/or stupidity who doesn't share your point of view.
Nice non-answer, 'buddy'.
You should question things if you have a reason to, i.e some kind of evidence against the original statement. Just questioning things for the sake of questioning will just make you constantly paranoid, lol.
I love how almost all people that say "you should question everything" literally questions everything even if those things have clear evidence. But they suddenly aren't interested in questioning conspiracy theories, they just accept them blindly, lol.
Hey climate change... lol
Great real world use video!!! Thanks Northrups.
Very honest and open talk, spot on!
The calm voice of reason, Thanks.
Great explain! Hey Toni, when we can expect the 70-200/2,8 shootout, which you mentioned a few weeks ago, i´m very curious!
Hey Tony I still want to know how's works the electronic shooter on the camera lifetime. How many shoots can I get from this a9 because you said you have 30k just for testing the camera. In addition, I made video with dslr, my last musical was 2:30 hours. Can the a9 record video that long?
I remember people saying that the overheating could be due to a slower card being used so it's working harder to write to teh card etc..Maybe you could somehow replicate that using a slower card to prove that point? And yes, the so called issues people are banging on the camera are just ridiculous...99.9% of the time, none of those so called issues happen..
Thanks for a fair and honest review. You guys are great.
balanced and fair review , thank you for the perspective 👍📷
Thanks for the great videos! Enjoyed the book as well.
After reading all the web sites and watching all the videos about all the problems, I received my A9. I took it out on a sunny Florida wildlife outing and shot birds in flight with the 70-200 GM. No problems. Works fine. I didn't even come close to using up the buffer at 20fps because birds are only the right size in the frame and coming towards you for three or four seconds max. Maybe you shoot for six seconds if a blue heron interacts with its mate in an interesting way after it lands. And then you wait for another bird to come by, meanwhile the buffer is clearing itself at 5-6 frames per second. Wasn't using a battery grip, but had two thirds of a battery left after about two hours of golden hour shooting. No overheating. Photos look great even after processing. The only problem I really have is that I need a longer lens!
Sony is doing some cool stuff. I'm glad they're putting the pressure on Canon and Nikon. I'm looking forward to the a7rIII.
Great arguments Tony!
can we get a Fuji xt2 vs Olympus EM-1 M2 video, please? I want to know your opinions on em.
So, Tony, in places like California, where we are having ~ 100F temperatures in Silicon Valley these two weeks, would the A9 overheat and shut down? I carry my Nikon on my shoulder, in full sun, and it works even when I feel like collapsing. Also, would it shoot video, or would I be better off getting a Panasonic (would prefer to stay with one system, to be honest). And the most important question: Would it work (photo and video) with the vertical grip in that kind of weather?
good job Tony.
Very good video, to be honest previous tests of Sony cameras you were one of the guys finding so many issues that I almost thought that you was anty sony so now I fully believe that you have tested a9 honestly.
you people, you people!! :-)
but seriously, thanks for the tips Tony. Based on one small comment you made, I bought an sd card reader for my phone and it's improved my instagram content hugely. Also good for uploading news pics to stock websites quickly. Thanks for that!
Great information! You are absolutely right about the flaws with DSLR's, it's strange that people don't call out Nikon and Canon about that, but they jump so heavily on Sony. I'm a Nikon D500 shooter and I'm seriously considering that A9 or whatever version is available by the time I look to buy another camera. I personally think it's nice that a company is innovating and releasing high quality products and giving us options. I really don't understand why Nikon and Canon are still living in the proverbial "dark ages" and seem to be unwilling to offer anything other than the same old stuff year after year.
Hi! Tony how well with this camera work with canon lenses, and will I lose image quality thank you
You should watch his previous videos or from other youtubers. He said that most Canikon lenses won't have any problem if you're using them with good adapters (e.g. Metabones). Though some camera feature (e.g. eye AF) will be unavailable, AF might have problems, and wide angle lenses have issues at corners.
I'm surprised to hear about the a7rII overheating. I have one and I live in a hot climate where it frequently goes over 110 degrees with high humidity and I never had even a warnings about the temperature working outdoors. But it's not often clear and sunny here so it seems the cameras are affected by direct sunlight and not ambient temperature, even if you're shooting all day long.
I haven't really heard about the A6500 overheating, did you have the igher heat setting turned on?
Canon 1Dx mk II or Sony A9.... which is best for wildlife photography.....?
I watched this and thought "Tony's points would be hard to reasonably argue with".
Then I read the comments and thought "Tony's points seem *impossible* to reasonably argue with"!
I love watching the Northrops. More power to them and I for one believe that they're one of the fairer reviewers of gear.
Agreed, I don't think of Tony and Chelsea as Sony fans at all -- they call it "fair", and I really trust their reviews.
I shoot concert with mechanical at 1/125 and I'm getting banding. How can I fix it
I have. I love it. Best tracking focus, best high ISO camera I have used. The picture quality almost matches my Canon 5DS. This camera, with the adaptability of Canon lenses, has me convinced the future is mirrorless.
Superb observations !!
About the banding, you probably have the Luminance Noise Reduction set to the standard 25?
I tried the same settings as you with a file from the DPReview A9 files, and couldn't see any banding in the blue sky. But when reducing Luminance Noise Reduction to 0, there actually was some visible at 100%. But then, why set noise reduction to 0?
my biggest gripe with my a9 is the joystick. im constantly accidently moving it way into a corner when im walking around with the camera in my hand down at my side. lift up. ugh. hit button to recenter it... focus. i wonder if i can disable the joystick...?
oh & i dislike the positioning of the bbf and ael buttons compared to my a99ii
Great video.Well done
you're right on Tony. keep up the good work.
Is it absolutely necessary to use a UHS-II memory cards or can 4k video be shot using the UHS-I memory cards?
Thanks Tony - that was great. Still waiting for the A9 to arrive in South Africa. Hurry up Sony!!
Thanks Tony for the information, keep the good work, and don't worry about hater, they have always been there and they will always be everywhere
Good Job, fair and objective analysis!
I'm a Sony shooter. converted from Nikon. I was ready and waiting for the a9. I had my credit card out. some one said overheat and Sony a9 in the same sentence and I decided to wait for version 2. so I really appreciated this vid.
still gonna wait. once bitten twice shy.
Hello Tony need ur suggestion as iam planning to upgrade from Canon 70D to full frame DSLR.
what is ur suggestion iam confused between Canon 5D M3, Canon 5D M4 and Nikon 810 mostly i will shoot only photograph only no video.
please suggest 😎
Check out Jared Polin's review with banding. Was the back button focus button to close to the video button for you?
Check out Jared Polins videos regarding the a9. He found banding in several circumstances. Concerts and sporting events under LED lights created substantial banding while using the electronic shutter. LED lights flicker extremely fast and the Sony a9 does have banding under those lighting conditions.
Hi, you and Chelsea have been amongst my youtube teachers these past few years and I want to thank you for it. I could tell you are getting annoyed by the hate-mongers. Dont let it bother you...When I get it at work---of course it still gets me mad...but then you realize if I constantly let it get to me...I would always be miserable. I do what I can to the best of my abilities...and if something does go unexpectantly wrong...so be it...I accept my mistakes and move on...Thank You for what you do.
Hi Chelsea and Tony, I know it's pretty off topic, but, do you have a review for the sigma 17-50 f/2.8
I'm planning on buying it but I really want to see your opinion. great video BTW
I still have seen your review on the 70 - 200 2.8.
Have I somehow missed it?
Nice Review.
First, let me say that I'm a professional filmmaker and not a professional photographer. Let me also say that your reviews always seem fair, detailed and balanced and I refer my friends and peers to your channel all the time. Thank you for the dedication and time.
The first dslr camera I ever bought was a Sony A99. Before that I shot medium format film. I now own a 5D and I love the Canon as a filmmaker/stills shooter for obvious reasons (magic lantern), but the A99 was the best stills camera I have ever used. My wife even misses that camera. I can only imagine that the A9 is in another league. And if I hadn't had such a horrible experience with Sony (had to send back the A99) I would probably buy one.
Anyone that says Canon and Nikon are better stills cameras are not being honest. Just being able to look through a viewfinder and seeing your exposure is enough to be a game changer. And the color coming out of the A99 was superb for me compared to the Canon.
Pro Support has made HUGE gains. You should really look back into ti
love the long vids
What lens do you have attached to the A9 on your desk ?
Is this a good camera for filming in tropics with extreme heat?
Can't wait for your review/thoughts on the EM1ii. I know they're different animals altogether, but they're both built for speed and both very capable.
I just went to Florida with the heat over 100 degrees. I had my camera on the beach for 8-10hrs on day one. The second day we were on a boat for 7-8 hrs. My A9 did NOT have any heat warnings. I do use a grip and had no issues.
Thanks for the great vids Tony. I'd love to see an impartial lens review of the 70-200 GM versus the Canon and (latest) Nikon version on similar resolution cameras. Thanks.
Given the issues with the 6500, what is your camera choice in that price segment?
Great video.Change frightens some people I'm debating on getting the A9 but have a lot of Canon glass and don't feel like paying for the G master lenses. It would be great to have a review of adapted lenses (70-200,mm 24-70mm w the metabones ) Specially the AF capabilities.
Thank you for giving this camera its due. I am sick of people kicking this device.
I only have one question... ILCA-99M2 or ILCE-9?
I love my ILCA-77M2 + 135mm f/2.8 [T4.5] SMT combo, but the ILCE-9 + 100mm f/2.8 [T5.6] STF looks very tempting.
My daily "pocket" camera is the RX1.
IMO go for A9. It seems Sony is investing more into the E-mount rather than the A-mount.
lol couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous Tony felt having to even make this video
Same. The amount of hate people have towards this camera is unbelievable.
It's not really hate. It is fear. Fear of the unknown.
John A Look what I did to this wedding with a few batteries and a sony a9
