Great video, thanks
I got my A9 , Sony grip and a Muti battery adaptor today and i'm so happy and impressed with this camera. I have an A7R2 and it might not see much action anymore because the A9 feels like much more my style. The AF, IQ, Sutter speed, Battier life, EV, dual cards, low light ISO ability, and so much more, it's just a camera thats a beast! love it = happy lol it's over kill for what i do, i got it for my weddings :) but its great! it's so far. PS I was able to work with the A9 for two days before i bought it :) so i kinda knew it was just what i wanted. :) Great review keep up the good work guys
Deadman Arcade the only thing the A7R2 has for my now is a little more detail and the ability to crop in more, other than that.... SOLD!!! but really i'm not sure but i'm leaning to yes. I think i'll know more in a week or two but again i'm thinking yes.
The A7R2 still has better ISO performance/dymanic range. That's not to say the a9 is Bad in those areas, but it's hard to be the best at everything ;)
Wes Perry Doing my test all yesterday the A9 has better ISO in video and stills. I have yet to test DR because in lightroom the raw converters for the A9 has not been added.
That's interesting, because even Sony intimated that the a7Rii would still hold its crown there. We'll have to wait and see what DxO has to say about it ;)
I just need to see photos in low light situation... After that I will get one! Great review!
How is the dynamic range of the sensor? I would have liked if you tested that as well.
Put that girl in all your videos and I will subscribe ;)
I second this notion. please do a pro sports camera shoot out with this lady back in front of the camera.
you can switch to slow motion via programmed buttons on older sony's too, though. It is cool that it has dedicated buttons now. That's kinda cool. Idk why they took away picture profiles though tbh
Thank you for the review...
Any thoughts on DPReview's comments that Sony sacrificed dynamic range for speed??? What are your thoughts?
nice work !!!!
Mine was supposed to arrive today so I could take it to Maine, but it got stuck somewhere during shipping. Thanks for the great review. How was weather sealing?
Sarati's expressions are the best part.
Very talented subject for this test =)
I'd love it if you'd test for the iris issue that so plagued the A7rii when combined with the 85gm and 24/70gm. Sure there's a workaround but it really isn't ideal and doesn't make for quick workflow, especially in high workload environments such as a wedding (which I think this camera could be ideal for). Interestingly enough Sony support also confirmed log will be coming, they said this on the BHphoto Q&A page in response to a question - "It does not have a pro res 422 option. Does not do 10 bit colour. It will have log profile"
nice video but sport in bright situation isn't a problem for most cameras. you have to try this a9 in indoor situations or during football matches with bad light and so much players. or during a indoor competition like artistic gymnastic where 20fps could be work well (but no one tested the AF of this camera in those situation...I've seen a surreal test of indoor sport with 2 or 4 giant led light near the athletes to bright the scene - press release event ).
If you make a camera that need to have an extra little grip to get room for all fingers, they should have made the body larger. Then they could have get even bigger batteries, and/or made room for dual XQD cards that would help clearing the buffer faster. Given the size and weight of all Sony pro glass, a slightly larger body doesn't really matter, if anything it would feel more balanced. As for a test, if you test something you think would be a great sports camera perhaps you should do it under more realistic conditions like a dark indoor sports arena with flourescent light and som fast sports action.
When you were doing the ISO test, what lens and fstop was that? Her eyes were soooo sharp even in the high ISO range.
We were using the 100-400mm lens. You'll have to ask Jay P about the iris; he was operating that one.
Thank u guys for the great review , just wanted to know more on rolling shutter with a panning photo shot also what I have hared that if u use the sony 500mm F4 u need an adapter and this adapter is going to slow the frame rates to 10 frames & I think because of that Sony told u guys they are not targeting sport photography with this camera because they do not have the glass for it yet , I would love to test the camera in a soccer match but Sony didn't invite me for the event for the camera yesterday in Doha so I'm not going to test it :P
Sony 500mm f4.0 lens is A-mount, and yes you would need LE-AE3 adapter to use it on A9.
With adapter your highest frame rate is 10fps, A-mount lenses are just not fast enough for higher frame rate.
Great review. One thing, you missed the point. You said, it doesnt have s-log, in Sony System it is called, Creative Style :) you can dial in all colors to flat however you like. Great video in all other aspects :)
Awesome review guys! How do you feel the a9 would do for concert/event photography? Mainly the autofocusing in low/dim lighting and noise control with ISO ranges up to 1600-3200. Thank you!
Thanks, Andrew! Jay P. and Lars actually talked about this on yesterday's video! - ua-cam.com/video/Lz4XsXjVzE8/v-deo.html
Jarad Polin did a review and mentions the issue of "banding". It appears that the LED lighting from the sports complex is causing some of the issues when shooting with the A9. Overall though the number of shots lost by banding was a pretty small percentage. I wanted a camera for Underwater Photography to handle the varying conditions while underwater. Everything is moving including the diver. This almost fills the ticket if it were not for the glass selection and lack of Sony customer support that I hear people complaining about. I don't know much about video side of the house but it is another area I am looking to expand in since people would like to see video footage also. Will they ever add the Slog feature to the video side of this camera to give us more options? I can't wait to see future reviews of this camera from a company like Backscatter for underwater shooting.
At 12:23 you said it shot 4K at 60fps. Is this true?
No, we were totally mistaken! A big point to be mistaken about. Sorry!
What already? been waiting for this one. You guys are not going to let us europeans sleep tonight with all these Sony a9 videos
People forget lenses make photo. Many gear heads only pixel peep sensor iq and camera build quality, but overlook lens options. Sony a7 a9 have sweet ass lenses for street and landscape shooters. Fujifilm had great start with X series, but years to go with quality lenses.
if it can do 20mp RAW burst at 20fps, then how much harder would it be to have raw 4k video?
I don't have any problems with this camera. It's targeted squarely at professional sports shooters, a crowd for whom $4.5k makes sense. It doesn't make sense for wedding, event, landscape, product, or any of the other many genres of photography. That's the part that confuses me a little. Sony has packed this full of features a7 shooters have been asking for, for a while.
Hopefully, some of the tech will trickle down into other lines which will only help bolster Sony's surging market position even more.
Also, as an a7r ii shooter (I would never replace that with this camera) whomever shot that beach video footage made a royal mess of it. I'm a huge fan of your content, but the a7r ii should have handled those conditions with aplomb. It was neither exposed properly or graded well.
Excellent review. :)
It is targeted as the pro sports shooter but Sony doesn't have a pro sports lens range (yet), and more importantly no one has tested it in under lighting conditions for any sport such as any type of football or baseball to see if the electronic shutter has any banding issues. At that price it wants to be an alternative to the big boys (D5 and 1DXII), but if it can't hit focus in high ISO under below average lighting and produce a high quality image then most pro sports togs aren't going to touch it.
Why no A99ii review?
Jonesys Photos - IMHO, People from Canikon background, didnt found A Mount Interesting... But the Mirrorless, they love it
Have you mentioned the banding with electronic shutter? Here is an image from the a9. uploads.disquscdn.com/images/222cda067fa209cf448774ee78c5da2598d8d07c6a25b62da3e64f004b0f497b.png
That's crazy! I don't generally use electronic shutter because it is a rolling shutter anyway. But that is really good to know.
I just shot a test the my A9 at a light like the one in that photo at the same setting and got no banding. the only way i could even see the slightest banding effect was to move the camera up a down while pressing the shutter button or shoot in the split second that the camera first sees the overexposure of the light bulb and is adjusting for the correct exposure. I believe the real issue will be over heating when shooting 4k in temp above 85 degree as mine did within 23 mins of shooting video outdoors the other day.
Strange confusion with regard to video quality.
A7 series - general photography
A7r series - hi resolution stills
A7s series - video
A9 - sports & wildlife
where the 600mm f4?
Its bizarre how Sony has lots of long glass for sports for the A mount but none for the E mount. It seems like they are cannibalizing their camera lineup. I'm sure the guys who just invested in a a99ii are more than a little upset.
Sony finally cracked the "Equation" for Mirrorless.. All photographers around the globe are celebrating it... A9 mark the birth of a new Era, and already a Legend... ;)
Until you need it serviced. :-/ So far I love my A7RII in studio, yet it is a waste of time on the field when you need something to be on and react quick. It just doesn't work. With Nikon and Canon, the camera is always in a real sleep mode with no battery issues, and instant ready to shoot as the settings are individually set and don't overlap, and it pulls off frames while the Sony will tell you about a number of reasons why it wasn't ready. I do like it in studio, but a MAJOR autofocus fail, slow start, and overall the service is the worst I have experienced. I would not pour any more money in a Sony system. I was going to get all the Sony glass, until I tried it out and realized its just the entire system that is the issue. I am sure other brands will respond and those who wait will be better off with a "Camera first", electronics second brand and then we might have a winner. Also no mention of INDOOR sports in the review, as I think this has a issue with mixed lighting situations as well.
Phil Indeblanc - You dont get it, Its a Perfect B Camera. So many pro photographer (world class) use Sony as a secondary camera...
I also have Complete Canon system, and a Sony Mirrorless fill in the gap nicely.... specially because DSLR very slow in innovation
steve blow well, i get that, I guess :-)
Just tired of taking it with me and having it sit sidelines :-)
Couldn't you shoot a little bit more of footage @ISO3200 rather than reversing the clip? It looks obvious and creepy it's not Twin Peaks!
Didn't realize we needed a longer clip until it was too late! Glad someone noticed though ;)
Why are you comparing burst rate of the a9 to the Canon 5D? and you were going to say Nikon...
I was at the press event for this camera. Was completely blown away by its focus tracking ability. Especially in that somewhat dark environment and the ridiculous speed of athletes moving around. flic.kr/s/aHskUbdW3h
I don't see the need for this camera for me, but it is definitely an amazing camera, especially for sports photographers
Now try it with low light conditions... xd
Rafel, lol, you make it sound like you were making a point or something. You know something the rest of us don't?
I think the point is no one has tested the camera in proper low light conditions for things such as sports. It was marketed by Sony as a sports camera to beat the D5 and 1DXII, but no one has tested the A9 in a real world situation such as a night football or tennis match. The thing that sports togs will be asking is can it shoot at high frame rate with the electronic shutter under lighting without any banding? It is the common issue with electronic shutter, and it needs to perform in those conditions and hit focus nearly every time for it to be considered a replacement for the Canon and Nikon.
I got problem Indicator triangle warning ( out side camera not feel hot just warm like Fujifilm X-T2 I have ) after use 40 mins in normal use not video, not 20fps, in good weather about 72oF, 9:00AM Sunday morning, that time battery still have 70%
Then I turn it off, take battery out about 1 hour, try again then 40 mins happen again,
I have only one battery, another come next Wednesday
This is real big problem,
Try again today on beach, maybe return it
Sony A9 + SEL70-200mm,F4 G OSS
Does your A9 have that problem ?,
This morning I know my camera is third one got problem
this is real clear : www.sonyalpharumors.com/first-sony-a9-overheating-issue-report/
When watching reviews, ask yourself....1)Is the reviewer a camera store owner/employee?...2)Are there links below to purchase the item being reviewed? There are very few reviewers that I trust. Most need you to click on the links below to bring in revenue.
Nah man, we make plenty of money doing other stuff. Thankfully that means we can be honest about the stuff we review.
Don't let the Angry Photographer watch this. He'll have a heart attack!
"He" is a beautiful woman, it's disgusting how you haters try to shame transgenders if you don't agree with their opinion
As much as you might dislike his opinions, he is usually right on.
I own and use in "the field" 3 systems, and the places I would use the Sony I have is the studio or setup shoots when the MF is just not needed, and....Well, that is about it.
I was going to say landscape, BUT, since I hike and like wildlife and landscape mostly together, the Sony cant react fast enough, nor keep up with autofocus, or battery life for such walk about shooting. And it isn't helping on the compactness in reality either. Its pretty much a cell phone with an amazing sensor attached to it... maybe a bit more, but not far from that when using it.
Hope the A9 is a camera first, then a electronic device. Nikon and Canon are cameras first and the electronics tries to catch up with it. Sony is an electronic device that all things have to be in place for the mechanics to work. If that makes sense, you know what I'm talking about. If not, you either have not spent enough time with both systems, or you are more like a "exhibitionist photographer", and don't use it as an extension of your eye to capture things when needed.
And the Angry dude showed you the mount ring strength on the Sony, and we see videos with the mount ring on the lens coming straight off, and Sony not do a thing to help or solve the issue, just telling the shooter you are out of luck on a $3k lens.
I'll wait for the real camera brands to respond if I need an upgrade. Also look at Sony's track record of camera support and how they handle the models from time of release to the next model...pretty much abandon it unless they see a market with some new tech, like this A9.
No Phil, the guy is a known plagiarist and Sony hater. His opinion is biased and damn near worthless. Sony already improved the mount that you speak of with the A7s mark 1, yet he maintains that they still use the weaker mount. Furthermore, have you seen his portfolio on flickr? It's so amateurish it's laughable.
Who cares about the A9? The girl takes the cake!!!
What a beauty :) (not the A9) :)
Why dance around the buffering info? One says it buffers, then it never buffered, then confused with preview and buffering....So unclear. Usually love you guys for your lighting reviews, but you guys need to do some technical justice. At least without saying it you confirm AF issues with the past bodies like the A7rII, which is as good as a brick on the field.

0:00 Holy SHit!
Pro sports shooters won't take this camera seriously until Sony comes up with some seriously fast glass, 600 f/4, 400 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8 etc. Also, it has to be weather-sealed to stand up to the elements. Quiet shutter will get the golf shooters excited, but NASCAR shooters won't care. Come back Sony when you get the long primes that work.
You guys danced around the battery (still won't last a full game, which means it will fail at the wrong time), you danced around the buffer, you danced around the high ISO & dynamic range (Umm you ever hear of a sport called basketball, you know indoor sports that require high shutter speeds and high ISO, this thing fell apart before 6400, my D5 doesn't even start falling till past 12800), didn't cover button placement & ease of use and rapid access to controls and menus you need, and you didn't compare it to a D5 or 1DXII???? This camera's main competition, and instead compared it to a 5D Nikon, at 7 FPS. OK, OK I'll be looking for an honest review. I really liked you JP until this moment.
CrewShift 227- LOL - Youre TOTALLY missing the point...
Its a perfect B camera, man.... They are pro, already have many DSLR / MF camera bodies, on average more than 3 bodies (i believe even much more), no use to buy another Dinosaur Nikon/ Canon, better add the Sony Mirrorless to the collection, to fill the gap.
Kidneys for sale...
Nice presentation, but the real takeaway was the model! :o) just sayin'
Hahaha, good to know, Michael! She was really helpful and it incredibly talented!
Maybe there is a DSLR kit for it? ;)
When you say actual camera you mean DSLR.
Now 3 days have gone by faults are starting to come in, over heating, banding and low ISO noise. Tyical sony all hype no substance.
We didn't have any of those issues with ours. It will be unfortunate if that's the norm.
Sony crashing and burning. At the moment DSLRs still beat the crap out of this subpar camera. I don't see any sports photographer rushing to ditch their Nikons or Canons. Keep dreaming Sony.
Its strange that no one has shown images of a sports shoot under lights at night.
and people want to ban religion because its "divisive"!!! 😉
All these so called test are done in optimal lighting, no mention of rolling shutter, down play of the 3 minutes it takes to empty the buffer, weather sealing can't be compared to a dslr. Can someone who owns this camera give a real honest review.
Kenneth Merrill I did watch it very fair review. I thought I put my comment on another reviewers video it wasn't meant for you sorry about that, sir.
I have to admit I am somewhat distracted by that girl.
Does anyone know of any real, non Sony sponsored review I can watch?
DarkRami so basically you want a review where they somehow talk crap about the A9 so you can feel better about your DinoSLR camera choice? Grow up man
I don't think this is Sony sponsored review.
All A9 reviews so far are done with Sony loaner, you have to make your own decision if those reviewers are influenced by that.
Unless the A9 was loaned by a party with no connections to Sony I think the review is influenced. I wanna see a review by a pro who actually shoots a D5 or 1DX m2 and bought the A9 with it's own money.
What a horrible camera. For sport / action the right lenses are missing. Plus, this camera comes along with substantial bugs - overheating and banding problem. How can that be for a camera at that price point?? Wow, I am really disappointed. I had a lot of fun with the Sony A7R2 which is in my opinion a very good camera. The good thing is that there are good options to Sony out there. Just to mention the really excellent Fuji X-T2 which I am using since some weeks. This camera is so good that I sold all my Sony stuff :)
Then do it. You won't miss a lot. I was concerned about the smaller APS-C sensor first (vs full format on Sony A7R2). But this is for me now after all just an overrated, emotional discussion rather than a discussion with logic arguments behind. If you take shots with the Fuji X-T2 and their excellent prime lenses you will agree. I basically use for my work mostly the outstanding Fuji 16mm 1.4 and also the Fuji 23mm 2.0. They do the job, any full format could not do it better. And if you need a wide angle then the Fuji 10-24mm 4.0 is a great one. Not 2.8 but for landscape I go any not over 5.6 or 8. Just try the Fuji in a store, then handling and build quality of this camera makes a clear difference.
Love Kenneth's reaction at 20:10 to Jay P's comment about Cannon response :)
