    I disagree with the notion that the cocoa mystery had no substance to it, it's a cool way to provide exposition and characterization while also providing a rewarding payoff and comic relief for the viewer

      The scene that has made me laugh the most out of any anime so far, was when Eru is doing the school festival radio announcement, and she bashes her head on the mic trying to bow. I burst out laughing so loudly and for so long, it nearly had me in tears lmao. It was just so unexpected so it caught me hella off guard.

    Really loved the first 3 episodes so far. Also haven’t seen Hyouka yet and maybe it’s because I’ve been a bit sick lately but I find the chillness of this show very pleasant. The cinematic feel adds a lot to that too. I much rather prefer this than another boring generic shounen

    I think you're kinda missing the whole purpose. It isn't the world that's off. The two kids are entirely missing the point because they're trying to become what they consider to be normal people while being completely unable to understand what normal people are. That's why things get weird. They aren't being normal. They're being extra weird because they simply went into the opposite extreme from where they were instead of to the middle ground they're seeking. This is the real reason Kengo dislikes what Kobato has become.
    Also, Kengo is NOT A NORMAL GUY. That's the whole point. In a Japanese mystery setting he would be the ultra-straight justice-driven tough guy detective who forces the sometimes-reluctant Great Detective to join him in his fight for justice. He's basically this series' version of Kyogoku Natsuhiko's police inspector Kiba Shutaro (watch Mouryou no Hako for reference). The characters in this story are basically teenage versions of Kyogoku characters. Kobato is a more laid-back Chuuzenji Akihiko and Osanai is a less supernatural and introverted Enokizu Reijiro.

    • @deathdoor
      @deathdoor 2 місяці тому +1

      Is Kengo really "not normal"?
      I feel like I struggle with "smart" series in a japanese setting because I just can't understand their logic and they just feel wrong.
      Also, about Kengo, this episode felt a bit contradictory when he refused to help Jougorou with Osanai. It's the opposite of what he did and said in the first episode. Remember, he said that he couldn't accept someone stealing something from a girl.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 2 місяці тому

      @@deathdoor Correct. Kengo would be perfectly willing to help Osanai on his own. It's the way Kobato skulks around that makes him reluctant. The problem isn't that Kengo doesn't want to help Osanai, but that Kengo doesn't think Kobato is trustworthy and therefore distrusts the need to help Osanai because it's Kobato who's asking. There's a scene in another Kyogoku story, Tesso no Ori, where Kiba does the same when Sekiguchi asked him for help because he thinks Sekiguchi wasn't acting like a man should at the time. The point here is that because the tough guy man of justice is rigidly set in his own view of "justice", he demands his compatriots to first conform to that "justice" before hearing their plea. To him, if you aren't just, you aren't worthy of justice or to be treated justly.

    • @deathdoor
      @deathdoor 2 місяці тому

      @@andrewsuryali8540 I understand Kengo not liking the way Jougorou asked him for help, but on the other hand I dislike how Kengo wants to "force" Jougorou to deal with the situation the way he idealizes Jougorou should.
      While I understand his thinking that a person shouldn't change the way hey are just because it bothers others, in this case it'll make they come up with some complex plan instead of doing it in a more simple and direct way.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 2 місяці тому

      @@deathdoor That isn't what he's asking, though. He's demanding that Kobato deal with the situation directly by involving both Osanai and himself instead of skulking around trying to create a complicated secret resolution (or block Osanai). It's Kobato who's making things complicated. Kengo thinks they should've just gone to Great Detective mode and bust the case wide open.

    It's not really "blowing up mundane thing out of proportion". It is more so depicting things in a "critical thinking way", and this are the things that add quirks to almost emotionless MC. It's a more unique way of showing character than resorting to "always" trigger them via a drama so that they can show more character.

    Hum... I still have to force myself to not think too much, because if I don't these episodes will crumble ever harder. The author is really counting with our good will, with situations like where and how Osanai's bicycle was found.
    Anyway, at least this episode made me think that maybe "the previous two were bad on purpose", because if the series continue following this thread practically everything else that was not about Osanai and her bicycle was irrelevant and just "filler". I really hope this is true and the story kicks in in earnest from now. But still... still! Even if it improves it'll still take a lot more to become enjoyable.

      @@Snzn_7 Ignoring the adhominen... take for example episode 2. What was all that about? What was the point of that whole chocolate "mystery"? Maybe just to show that yes, Kanda is actually a "simple" person.
      This is controversial, it's how the author chose to convey that information, but for me and for a lot of people it was just boring. It was a convoluted way to tell us something very simple, also, having Jougoru being the one to "solve that mystery" maybe wasn't a good way to show how smart he is, after all, wasn't it obvious? I immediately found the solution, am I as smart as the series thinks Jougorou is?
      That's the problem, in theory this should be a more refined and thoughtful story, isn't it? In this case shouldn't the writing "be better" than the average anime writing? I had a very negative impression and expectation watching episode one. Jougorou and Osanai go to a restaurant and talk a bit while she eats, and she just casually talks about how much she likes sweet things and that Jougorou is the heir of a japanese sweets shop, and how Kanda acts with Jougorou and how they should act because their promise. It's pure obvious unhinged exposition. While the series apparently tries to have "good dialogue"sometimes dropping hints of this and that it also have these low quality moments that makes people, like me, become very skeptical if it's really worth paying that much attention. Why would I pay attention and try to think about what the characters are saying when every time something important comes up the series changes it's tone and art style to highlight it? By the way, it's unrelated, but I had just fished watching Yatagarasu and that series in on another level in regards to dialogue and direction, it's smart and complex without ever relying on exposition of any sort.
      However I'm also not thinking too much to not make this series feels worse, because isn't hard to see that the situations presented have a lot of strange details and bits that are hard to believe. For example, the bicycle in this episode. Someone run over the bicycle, stopped the car, went to it to get its number, in the dark of night, left the bicycle there, had the trouble to search under whom it was registered, the number of the school the owner attends, the bicycle sat there in the same place the whole day and no one removed it... it's a bit hard to accept. In the previous episodes the author also forced his hand quite a bit to create a few situations and it's hard to not see it when you start thinking and it distracts what what we should be paying attention.
      I'll continue watching because in the end it may reveal some interesting character story between Jougorou and Osanai, but only because of that, because they may have some interesting relationship. But for now there isn't much to be excited about.
      edit: for now they gave me no reason to care about them, after all, if you're saying you're tying to be "ordinary" then it means you think you're extra ordinary. Hard to sympathize.

    • @Snzn_7
      @Snzn_7 2 місяці тому +1

      @@deathdoor it's not convoluted way of storytelling, again this is more of a "taste" on how the writer wants to show character in a story. So the "extra-ordinary" implies a more realistic take on extraordinary and not a full blown anime type way. (Though seriously if you look up the genre for this anime then you would only end up with just slice of life and mystery)
      Also I think I will remind you the source material is a Novel, like the "not anime kind of novel" the type that probably would get a live action adaptations rather than an anime. Not a light Novel, it's a standard Novel.
      Like I am giving you a lot of pass since you seems rather too ignorant of what the show is
      It's like if person don't care about "power systems", will they care about when a story focus about exploring the powers system and how the characters will react to that.??
      Like are those story bad because they spend a lot of time with that just because a few people don't really care about it?.
      Like let's take Mushoku and shield hero, a lot of the magic/power systems are basically cut out from the story and the story still end up fine. Though removing is a minus for the show.
      Same with exposition, like if it so bad the author of the material shouldn't be as well regarded aas he is. And from how you explained how you see it is bad, it build down again to more to your taste as you prefer how other show handles things.
      I am fan of various works and creators do stuff in their own unique way which is why their works will differentiate from each other. Their are works that more so standout because of how unconventional they are written. The author of this story falls on that category the same way the author of Monogatari series do.
      It seems to me that you keep pushing things you like from other series and forcing them to a series that does is. And seems you are not so familiar with this author I will use the Monogatari author as and example since he is more popular.
      What you are basically trying to do is basically asking Nisiosin to be not Nisiosin and strip away what made the author's work something you can find on other works.
      And since his works are very unconventional some people won't resonate with said world but that does not mean his works "are" bad.
      Again back to this anime, The MC basically won't bother to do flex his talents. And like the past works of this author, he uses other characters that are uberly curious about stuff to make the MC do his stuff. And if you are really paying attention the "bigger" the scale of the case(Big in a sense of a normal everyday kind of sense) the more hesitant the MC will get involved. If it is very a very minor thing, The MC is more keen to use his talents as it is minor enough to not get himself too much attention.
      Your Issue with the bicycle is more so on how the "anime" depicted it and not the author. Since it was written in an unconventonal way the anime is trying to capture it by directing it an unconventional way. Same thing with the changing backgrounds for episode 1.
