Atelier: Ah-tell-E-eh - Source: Am Frenchie An atelier is basically a workshop. It's also translated as studio, but it's meant for the kind of studio where work gets done (like an art studio). Oh hey, look at that, a manga about drawing... And that's probably the distinction. Atelier are usually artisanal, a place where someone can go to seek skilled craftsmen who (presumably) are at the top of their game. They're basically non-existent in North America because we don't do bespoke stuff anymore, and everyone's focused on mass production (and then deciding that doing mass production locally is too expensive because people want to be paid fairly so we outsource to China or poor nations). It's mostly a European and Asian thing now, and even there the idea of a business doing bespoke stuff in one offs or small runs is hard to maintain. Atelier are also often places people would go for apprenticeships in that craft, with the master assigning work to apprentices so they could learn that craft (another reason they're all but non-existent in North America, for some reason an apprenticeship is perceived as inferior to a school degree, despite teaching practical skills). Anyway, I am looking forward to this anime. The manga was quite the thing to look at, but seeing it come to life will (hopefully) be a very interesting thing.

Found Witch Hat Atelier due to my obsession with Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau. Can not overstate how beautiful this Manga is and I can't wait for it to get the recognition it deserves.
I love Alphonse Mucha's style! legit just wrote a paper about him. So few people know of him! It's great to see him getting proper appreciation! I'd never made the connection between his style and Witch Hat Atelier before but it now makes a lot more sense to me as to why I love the style of this manga so much!
I am also a huge Mucha fan. May I recommend the manga/webtoon "wait where the shooting star falls " another story about witches with beautiful artwork.
I dunno, man. The Lord of the Rings would have been a lot better if Frodo was the reincarnation of a Japanese NEET who landed in the Shire after being hit by a truck.
I just cannot wait for Witch Hat Atelier! That manga singlehandedly revitalized my love for the fantasy genre as a whole. I've never seen such a beautifully laid out manga and a magic system this simple but with such depth.
Honestly I think I love the heart behind the magic system even more than I love the magic system itself - beyond all of the excellent storytelling and the drama of the grey morality of the forbidden magics, the magic system at its core is a metaphor for how drawing is a form of magic in and of itself, and so many of the panels feel like they’re full of reverence for art and illustration as a whole. It’s really quite touching and conveys the mangaka’s love for art quite clearly.
I learned about witch hat atelier about a year or two ago when the show called the owl house ended since the creator was inspired by this manga and ever since, every chapter of it I ever read has gotten me blown away wanting nothing else but to see more. Thanks for promoting such an incredible piece of art !
That's so cool. I was about to say the magic system is extremely reminiscent of TOH glyph system. So I was wondering if both got a similar inspiration for this system or if one inspired the other
Something like that, except FMA was more into the equivalent exchange thing. WHA is more like Harry Potter-ish where you only need to cast water magic to produce water, no exchange needed unless you count your time in making the seal and the ink you've used.
@@humourlessjester3584 I'd argue that this is what the HP magic system wished it had. The magic system in HP didn't really have any drawbacks which led to some writing conundrums.
I'm so glad that, in anime, epic fantasy stories actually FEEL like epic fantasy stories. The World is colorful, rich and vibrant, the music are majestic, there's a plethora of intriguing characters, and don't get me started on the lore and worldbuilding. Nowadays, in Western Media, there's this overgrowing habit that, if you make something fantasy, it has to be dark and edgy. And, sure, it makes sense in worlds like Game of Thrones and Dark Souls, but, every once and a while, it's good to have fantasy stories that actually make you think "I would love to visit this place" EDIT: okay, I came back to this comment, and now I wonder why the hell did I use a JAPANESE game like Dark Souls as an example. I now wonder how confusing my comment is
Man, you just stole my comment. I like dark fantasy but nowadays it feels like they need to make everything over the top dark and edgy because otherwise “is for kids” or some reason. Also this manga is goated, glad that people is beginning to notice it, can’t wait for the anime
Especially within the medium of "YA books".... to be clear, I don't read many books, and when I do, it's definitely not fantasy or YA, but from what I hear about it, it just sounds like a sad sad corner of the medium to be involved with.
This is why, when Stormlight Archive eventually gets adapted, I desperately hope that it is an animated adaptation and not live action. Because if it is live action, I just know that they're going to remove a huge amount of strangeness and wonder from the setting, either for lack of budget or because anything high budget enough to actually portray what the world is like would inevitably be dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience.
The panel layouts of Witch Hat Atelier is so fucking cool. I distinctly remember like a page where the panels are windows and there's the whole page of mosaic glass things
One of the most pleasant surprises of the last year was me accidentally discovering Witch Hat Atelier localized in my local mall. It's really nice and frankly - something I can freely recommend a bunch of people who aren't "into anime". It's a really nice fairytale story with an absolute minumum of anime "insider tropes" And the art varies between "neat" and gorgeous.
As someone whose know about and been reading Witch Hat Atelier for a couple years now I‘m so incredibly glad it‘s getting an anime adaptation! I love it wholeheartedly and am glad it‘s getting some more recognition! :) Great video as always 👍👍👍👍
I love how this big 3 isnt just the three best, each represent something really important to fantasy story telling and have it as their biggest strength - Story telling - World bulding - Power sistem This is just so fucking cool if the creators of these three stories united forces we could have the best fantasy story ever made
Man what a great magic system. The analogy to coding is spot on. The different examples you gave of the different spells reminded me of the different ways I mix and match old code from different projects to make new ones.
So basically this magic system is cousins to the magic system Brandon Sanderson used in his 2005 book - Elantris I’ve always loved that system. Granted, the Elbatrian’s symbols require far more precision.
@@benjamingoldstein9156 Elantris, because that's the center of the complexity for them. In Atelier it's about creativity, how do you combine things, not how precisely you draw them. Elantrians have an innate understanding of runes and don't need to think them through.
they are really similar but the authors focus on different aspects of the magic AonDor in Elantris and other cosmere books is like more like coding and figuring out how to make a complex spell that does exactly what you want in the most optimized way and also wont kill you when you use it, (though we see more of that with elantrians in other cosmere books than elantris) like making a teleport spell that wont bury you alive or drop you from the sky and for that you have to draw sigils to provide the exact distance and angle the spell will target relative to your location. Magic Seals in witch hat atelier does have complex spells and coding like AonDor but its more about creativity and art, not the most optimized and powerful spell to use. like the spell that make comfy cloud-cushion things out of sand. we still do see some detailed and powerful magic tho.
the panels in this manga are probably the best I've ever seen they are so creative. like there was one in one of the flashbacks that used pillars to divide the panels. and it was BEAUTIFUL
there was one spread where they were exploring a city and the panel on the right page transitioned into the panel on the left page by turning a corner in one connected drawing and it was so cool
Took anime only over half a decade to catch up. All the manga in the thumbnail are over 5 years old at this point and are all highly influential. There are other manga inspired by their style, like Soara, Dragon Hero Courier and many others.
us manga readers has been looking upon the despair of anime watchers for years complaining about "everything is isekai" and "why aren't there good pure fantasy anymore" now they know, they'll all know!
I mean...that's just factually untrue. Dungeon meshi and witch hat are true to be fair(although they're closer to a full decade than half a decade, but that would be pedantic of me). Frieren however is barely 4 years old and the anime released before it was even 3 and a half years old.
This magic system reminds me of a Minecraft mod "Hex Casting". Magic there is done only by drawing shapes that represent actions, entities you interact with, numbers.
@@koenigsgambit9040 Yes... too efficient... it looks specifically like the rocket made by DR.Evil from Austin powers... I think timmy needs to have a talking to about copying other's work!

Hell yeah Gigguk finally making a dedicated video talking about witch hat atelier and simultaneously providing the non-fantasy peeps with the information and a gateway to the big 3 of the fantasy genre, super stoked for Witch hat to come out next year hopefully there will be no production issues this time from Bug films.
The story of witch hat is so masterful, the number of themes it manages to touch on without it ever feeling like it's unfocused is amazing, they all intertwine beautifully (art, talent vs skill, education, the responsibility adults have towards children, fascism, isolationism, relationships, disabilities and ableism, classism, sexism, i'm probably forgetting a bunch) I only started reading it two years ago and i have not stopped thinking about it ever since, it's like if fma and mob psycho 100 had a child who had alphonse mucha level art-style I cannot recommend the manga enough, even after the anime comes out i will keep pushing people towards reading it because the hatching and the paneling are amazing
As someone who has read all of the witch hat, Manga I can confirm that it is definitely has potential to be in the top three fantasy anime with how good the story characters artwork are and don’t even get me started on how phenomenal the magic system is. I am Haley looking forward to that adaptation.
I’m so glad that we’re getting a Brandon Sanderson style of a hard magic system finally being adopted into an anime! These types of magic systems are always my absolute favorites.
Now I's like to see an anime adaptation of one of his books. Mistborn or Stormlight Archive. Of course Japanese only adapt other japanese media sadly... But we got the series Arcane, which was praised by everyone for its story, animation, world building, etc. and its art, although it's CGI, feels very close to anime / cartoon and is plain gorgeous. It was made by a French studio, okay with a lot of money to finance it, but still. To me, it's proof enough that Western animation could resurrect from the disgusting dead and rotten state it is in right now. I'd say, we fire all these CalArts animation studios that suck ass, and we put the money on less known art schools that still practice traditional art (as in, traditional styles, not archaic tools of course, they still need to be productive to make money lol). And we humbly take inspiration from Japanese animation, because there is no mystery why Western animation is dead, while Japanese anime are flourishing. They simply know their stuff while we don't. And it's not because the western audience don't like animation, given how the western audience market is growing each year for japanese animation. It's proof there is not enough investment going into Western animation studios (meaning, less cartoons, and they are less ambitious), and the little there is goes mostly into 3D kids shows that are too childish for adults to enjoy too, 3D Pixar movies that are becoming soulless by the day, and crappy CalArts studios that do adult shows for "the modern audience" (Steven Universe...)
@@mythicdawn9574 "Japanese only adapt other Japanese media sadly.." Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Solo Leveling, Star Wars: Visions, Howl's Moving Castle, Arrietty, I could go on for a while, there's a whole reddit post dedicated to just this from about ten years ago. I'd say also that western animation is on a resurgence. Arcane is just one example, we also have Castlevania, Legends of Vox Machina, Survivors Reign, Dota: Dragon's Blood (A lot of people don't like it but I thought it was fun), let's also not forget the Spiderverse movies and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, both of which are fantastic despite being made for a younger audience. While I agree that shows like Bigmouth and Birchum need to be burned in a fire, I think we're seeing more and more signs that western animation is becoming less Toy Story and Family Guy and more Avatar: The Last Airbender and OG Teen Titans.
what made me fall in love with this series was me being able to imagine a specific spell sigil and seeing it work in the manga. the problem solving routes the characters go through are so human and it’s actually amazing
I mean, segfaults come from accessing memory forbidden to the program, right? It'd be a bit like trying to freestyle a new spell and accidentally finding the one that shuts off magic generally
omg at 6:45 I had to pause because I was cackling too much. What an impeccable transition into a CCS reference lmao Edit: Also, forgot to mention, SO happy you're promoting this manga. I've been a massively passionate fan of WHA for years!!
Shout out to one scene in a relatively recent chapter where a dude is using magic glasses to see through clothes, and when he's caught and pulls the "I'm improving peoples lives cause people love seeing hot women naked" card which anime STILL likes to do legitimately, the cops not just call him out on it with a BANGER line "The dream you facilitate, is a nightmare for your victims" I absolutely love that scene is there cause I absolutely hate when people, especially anime and/or fans, try to justify sexualizing women because 'people like it' or 'they have sexy bodies so they should flaunt it' *cough*fireforce*cough*, and this chapter not only shoots that guy down majorly, but also includes a flashback about how harmful this mindset was to one of the cops in her younger years. I'm a dude so I cant relate to this situation from the woman's perspective, but I absolutely LOATHE when this angle of 'im a guy so I should always just be horny and do whatever I can to see naked women" is pushed as normal and not harmful for both sides
What I liked (ironically as a girl reading that scene) was when the creep tries to justify himself to the male cop, basically saying "as a man you should feel the same way I do, right?" The male cop retorts with "not all of us are as disgusting as you, it's not that its natural for you as a man you're just a piece of shit" [paraphrased]
Thanks for this video-I’m so excited to see Witch hat atelier to explode into mainstream! It’s been so precious to me, and I’m so happy to see people discovering it for the first time 😭❤️
Not to mention Witch Hat has a white-haired mentor figure with a charming disposition and a dark mysterious past. The fandom tumblr girlies are about to go absolutely feral
I don't know. Like the part with the shoes sounded way more interesting as a way to build on that concept than just describing how this one guy does magic really well. That was the closest this description came to being straight out of an Isekai with the gamer MC.
Okay. Despite WHA being my favourite manga, I don't think that's right. All of the big 3 focus on different aspects of fantasy worlds. I can't say that WHA's worldbuilding is anywhere close to Meshy.
My girl got a magic book from an alley, she was destined to fight an axe gang, duel a frog man, almost getting killed by doing so, and reborn with Buddha's hand
The description of the magic system in this reminds me so much of the magic systems in Brandon Sandersons books while they are not Mangas so its a fair bit different of a read each of his worlds and stories has a hard coded magic system with heavy rules and regulations you can't just fly unless you do the right thing and even then he uses things like a magic that changes gravity instead to create his own form of flight that functions differently and has different problems and solutions, I'm incredibly excited to see this anime come out because I've always loved interesting thought provoking magic systems that aren't just I can do this! Why? Because magic! And if others want other magic systems like in With hat Atilier then I absolutely recomend Brandon Sandersons works

I would add Magus Bride and of course, Made In abyss, as one of the influences that even got this kind of thing greenlit in the first place. As they also happens to be a really great fantasy show that has nothing to do with the reincarnation genre. Just good unique fantasy stories, which is too damn rare
Made In abyss definetely reignited the old fantasy genre for me, the ones that just enthralls you with their otherworldly atmosphere and sucks you in and makes you feel like you're being introduced to another world. How fantasy animes are supposed to be.
I liked the magus bride but honestly the main character (the red hair girl, I don't remember her name) was a pretty boring character to me, I tried to rewatch it a couple of times but I never got very far (farthest I got was around episode 15 of the first season) I definitely agree with you on made in abyss though, i love it
First off, the name of the show is "Elf Girl Toilet Roll: The Adventures of Wipe Senpai." Secondly, I don't think you have the mental capacity to be able to comprehend the deep intricate story telling that the mangaka wrote, nor do I believe you have the emotional intelligence to be able to empathize with Wipe-Senpai's character arc. When Mizaki-Chan needed him most, where was he? Right beside her. When Sakura-Chama finished her tinkle, where was he? Right beside her. When Akiko-San had too much Taco Bell where was he? In the restroom. Preparing to be with her. That's a real man right there.

With that being said, I want to take this moment to say: READ THE MANGA. Seriously, the mangaka Kamome Shirahama does an amazing job with this series, really pushing the medium of manga to its limits. To say nothing of her amazing art, her use of framing and panelling is fantastic and significantly adds to the story in a way that I don't know the anime will be able to recreate.

You should read "Magus of The Library" too. It's one of the best fantasy manga ever, with worldbuilding rivaling that of "Lord of The Rings" and "Dungeon Meshi". Its art is absolutely gorgeous, and its subject matter, books and libraries, is tackled fantastically.
Now that folks are catching on about WHA I have shifted into being "guy who keeps recommending Magus of the Library to people" Hopefully that one catches on soon too so I can evolve into my next form of "guy who keeps recommending Bard Loen to people"
Dang! I love me a good hard magic. It's not something that comes up often in anime and manga (yet) and it's a type of fantasy that makes the magic feel very impactful. The more the reader can understand the magic, the more tgey can understand a fight and the tools being presented.

"Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science."
Looks like an interesting series!
It's like saying "The most advanced technologies will be indistinguishable from magic and witchcraft" but it would be said by a sorcerer or a witch.

I haven't read it yet but I hope it's not as bad as another anime with "Atelier" in its name, I still don't get what it means
@@fitmotheyap it just mean, something like a studio
Honestly I think I love the heart behind the magic system even more than I love the magic system itself - beyond all of the excellent storytelling and the drama of the grey morality of the forbidden magics, the magic system at its core is a metaphor for how drawing is a form of magic in and of itself, and so many of the panels feel like they’re full of reverence for art and illustration as a whole. It’s really quite touching and conveys the mangaka’s love for art quite clearly.
I thought it was mid , the world building is good but the characters are so boring and generic
@@fitmotheyap I heard my dad use it once so I asked him and it's basically French for workshop.

Thanks for promoting such an incredible piece of art !
That's so cool. I was about to say the magic system is extremely reminiscent of TOH glyph system. So I was wondering if both got a similar inspiration for this system or if one inspired the other

And, sure, it makes sense in worlds like Game of Thrones and Dark Souls, but, every once and a while, it's good to have fantasy stories that actually make you think "I would love to visit this place"
EDIT: okay, I came back to this comment, and now I wonder why the hell did I use a JAPANESE game like Dark Souls as an example. I now wonder how confusing my comment is
okay but dark souls isn't western media tbf
Man, you just stole my comment. I like dark fantasy but nowadays it feels like they need to make everything over the top dark and edgy because otherwise “is for kids” or some reason. Also this manga is goated, glad that people is beginning to notice it, can’t wait for the anime
Especially within the medium of "YA books".... to be clear, I don't read many books, and when I do, it's definitely not fantasy or YA, but from what I hear about it, it just sounds like a sad sad corner of the medium to be involved with.
Yeah it's called dark fantasy and it's also extremely prevalent in anime and manga. Berserk is literally one of the most popular manga out there.
It's a really nice fairytale story with an absolute minumum of anime "insider tropes"
And the art varies between "neat" and gorgeous.
As someone whose know about and been reading Witch Hat Atelier for a couple years now I‘m so incredibly glad it‘s getting an anime adaptation! I love it wholeheartedly and am glad it‘s getting some more recognition! :) Great video as always 👍👍👍👍

Man what a great magic system. The analogy to coding is spot on. The different examples you gave of the different spells reminded me of the different ways I mix and match old code from different projects to make new ones.
Go check out some Brandon Sanderson, same vibe explored in more depth
It also sounds like what Mushoku Tensei's Nanahoshi was doing.
Tyranny. The game, I mean.
So basically this magic system is cousins to the magic system Brandon Sanderson used in his 2005 book - Elantris
I’ve always loved that system. Granted, the Elbatrian’s symbols require far more precision.
It's not clear to me which requires more precision.
Reminds me of RuneScape
@@benjamingoldstein9156 Elantris, because that's the center of the complexity for them. In Atelier it's about creativity, how do you combine things, not how precisely you draw them. Elantrians have an innate understanding of runes and don't need to think them through.
That aside can you tell me what software did you use to make that pfp
they are really similar but the authors focus on different aspects of the magic
AonDor in Elantris and other cosmere books is like more like coding and figuring out how to make a complex spell that does exactly what you want in the most optimized way and also wont kill you when you use it, (though we see more of that with elantrians in other cosmere books than elantris) like making a teleport spell that wont bury you alive or drop you from the sky and for that you have to draw sigils to provide the exact distance and angle the spell will target relative to your location.
Magic Seals in witch hat atelier does have complex spells and coding like AonDor but its more about creativity and art, not the most optimized and powerful spell to use. like the spell that make comfy cloud-cushion things out of sand. we still do see some detailed and powerful magic tho.

Took anime only over half a decade to catch up. All the manga in the thumbnail are over 5 years old at this point and are all highly influential. There are other manga inspired by their style, like Soara, Dragon Hero Courier and many others.
Better to wait until there's content to adapt instead of catching up in 1 season and going "ah, shit" and going on a hiatus or worse, anime original.
That's just the nature of adaptations. It takes years before a property gets aired on screens, no matter how good or popular

Yes! +1 for mentioning Brandon Sanderson. I am addicted to his books.

Shout out to one scene in a relatively recent chapter where a dude is using magic glasses to see through clothes, and when he's caught and pulls the "I'm improving peoples lives cause people love seeing hot women naked" card which anime STILL likes to do legitimately, the cops not just call him out on it with a BANGER line "The dream you facilitate, is a nightmare for your victims"
I absolutely love that scene is there cause I absolutely hate when people, especially anime and/or fans, try to justify sexualizing women because 'people like it' or 'they have sexy bodies so they should flaunt it' *cough*fireforce*cough*, and this chapter not only shoots that guy down majorly, but also includes a flashback about how harmful this mindset was to one of the cops in her younger years. I'm a dude so I cant relate to this situation from the woman's perspective, but I absolutely LOATHE when this angle of 'im a guy so I should always just be horny and do whatever I can to see naked women" is pushed as normal and not harmful for both sides
He also got the punishment he deserves which is the best
What I liked (ironically as a girl reading that scene) was when the creep tries to justify himself to the male cop, basically saying "as a man you should feel the same way I do, right?" The male cop retorts with "not all of us are as disgusting as you, it's not that its natural for you as a man you're just a piece of shit" [paraphrased]
