That last puzzle is actually pretty easy. Not necessarily because its easy, but because it's so famous as a study that even amateur chess players might have seen it on instagram and tiktok.
I've never seen it and I have like a 300 rating and easily solved it. I have beaten my 1500 rated friend before though so idk. Maybe I have good intuition *shrugs*
David Howell acts too modest for a former 2700 player. If GothamChess had David’s rating, he would strut around the streets with his nose high up in the air crashing into every single New York building.
everyone who watchs chess content on UA-cam and Twitch and is interested in the game probably has seen the 3. Puzzle with Ra6 before like the little boy. It is a well known puzzle in the chess bubble... my impression
I only occasionally do chess puzzles, and I only really do ones from actual games rather than composed ones like the last one, so it took me a min of trial and error in my head to get it. I am 1700 OTB so I would be expected to get it I feel. Howell is a true gentleman.
calm down kid, he is better than like 90% of the population if you think the amount of people that don't play and someone who has played a few games would be around 500-1000. no need to try and talk down to him because someone at a chess club would be him.
Was anyone thinking the answer to the hardest one was something like 1.Ra5 a6 2.Rh5 then the black bishop goes somewhere 3.Rh7 then the black bishop goes somewhere on the same diagonal again. 4.Rxb7 then if the black bishop goes back to b8 to guard against the mate on a7 white plays 5. Rxb8# and if 4.... a5 5.Rxa7#
I'm around 1,100 level and got the 1st one and the last one fairly quickly. The second one was a little harder, I was inclined to move the rook first for a fishing pole trap checkmate, but didn't notice the potential of the black Queen to then go to d1 and deliver a back rank checkmate on the white King. So the white Queen has to move before the white rook does.
I love the last puzzle! If I'm not mistaken it was created by Paul Morphy himself If you ever have to explain what is zugzwang to someone, show them this puzzle. It's also easy to remember how to set the position up 😊
Pawn promotion in a King and pawn vs king endgame is a better example when the attacking king has opposition. The simpler the example the better for beginner students.
if you do tactics you see those puzzles all the time. My TT rating is around 2200. the last one if you have never seen it can be tricky if you haven't seen it before.
Nice. Got them all. First one probably took me the longest because I focused on the queen rook options first. I've only played a handful of games but I've done a fair bit of puzzles.
I struggled on the Easy one and solved he medium and hard one in like 5 seconds each. How did people miss the medium one just sack the queen for a rook mate
Too easy puzzles. I mean yes, third one is trickier but i have literally seen that problem too many times already. Guess i would have look like a genius in this video.
Weirdly the last one was easiest for me probably because not many choices then second to last was second easiest and the first one took me the longest still though found all pretty quick my brain does like computer
Howell should be a fake GM, no way a grandmaster gets this level of social skills

The first one had mate in 1 and a mate in 3. Can you say a forced mate in 3 is a wrong answer?
If the idea is to find the quickest way to win I guess you could say it's a wrong answer
Yeah...Its wrong And its useful in board chess...sometimes you physically cant move 3 pieces so...Finding quick mate is necessary...
the hardest puzzle here was to guess that long haired kid was a boy, I solved it just before the third puzzle.
#2 was Fischer i believe. #3 was Morphy's only puzzle.
