Sorry to be that guy, but it isn't mate in 14 necessarily because black does not have to follow that sequence of plays. There were possible lines from black that let white get a queen that doesn't lose the game this way that could take longer than 14 moves.
@@koolaidjerk I'm a chess beginner, can you tell me why this is the solution to the puzzle if there are another set of moves that will make it last longer? How do they know they reached the solution?
@@elviejohg744 With two good players, if white gets a queen they will win basically 100% of the time. So to prevent that black has to play the way described in the video, which results in the mate in 14 sequence. Exactly! Pressed 'pause', thought 'Am I arrogant enough?', pressed 'play' immediately.
There is a crucial difference between "analyzing a random position for evaluation purposes" and "solving a white-winning puzzle". That applies to humans and machines. I think that would one insert this position into a machine as a puzzle, it would probably get the solution quickly.

I can second that story. My dad taught me to play as a kid but I never heard of a chess club or knew "openings" and endgames. Years later I wanted to teach my son to play and looked to youtube for a refresher lesson. I found the St. Louis chess Club channel and this was in the recommendations. This is a great puzzle. It looks like the engines fall victim to overzealous tree pruning.
wonder what alphazero would think of this...
Engines probably overrate material for better chances in most games.
@@severnkariuki9129 That they do, especially when there are no immediate tactics... but in this case, nearly every underpromotion involves or creates a tactical situation. That's why I'd tend to favor a tree-pruning explanation over a material one, in this case.
@@phoenixshade3 yes, they prune the tree but due to material. I think they ignore any continuation after knight and queen sac with checks(forcing move) and assume that variation leads nowhere. Little do they know the king, bishop and pawn is all that is necessary here. I believe they do not see how black is helpless with dim knights on almost the worst squares possible like Tal probably did. Alphazero might have seen this.

How does this work? Doesn’t depth 58 mean that it has mapped out every possible move for the next 58 possible turns? How can it not spot the move?
@@duffin3503 no, no. Engines rely heavy in euristics to cut out most of the useless moves. But in some cases it endup cutting lines that shouldn't, because engine thinks it's a bad line and doesn't worth analysing it.
@@duffin3503 due to exponential complexity it's completely impossible to calculate every possible move into such depth. If engines were calculating every possible line they could think only few moves ahead.

I used the Stockfish engine on lichess and while watching the video and it was at 6:58 that when I played Bc2+ the level went up to +4.8 for white. This was the winning move that the engine could not spot that Tal could. Before I played this move, the level was at -5.2. Very interesting observation. Also, at 7:12, instead of playing Nf7+, the engine recommends to play Kg4 instead as it avoids the unstoppable mate in 11. I let the engine play itself and the game subsequently ends with white winning after exactly 30 moves after Kg4.
Only engine I could solve this with was Stockfish 14, but that's just overkill

Ivanchuk, tal, Barnes and Anderson are mine so far. I just love the crazier plays and the positional attacks.
The first time I've seen this puzzle was during a lecture by Czech grandmaster Vlastimil Hort. He accompanied it with a great story. He was in Riga in Tal's house and both of the gentlemen were waking up. They shared some drinks and Tal's wife brought them some sandwiches. It was a happy occasion since Tal's daughter (I believe) was allowed to a musical conservatory. And since it was time to celebrate, what better way to start your day there is than to show this masterpiece of a puzzle.

That feeling when you spend 5 minutes of the video trying to solve the puzzle and then you realise that you were looking at the board as if it was flipped ... I thought it was strange for the puzzle to start as white king is checked by the pawn.
I may not be the best chess player material afterall Lol
Correct king checked by a pawn
I thought so but then i looked at the alphabets on the bottom and those numbers on the left and figured out.
white to play and win.. bruh lol
@@DoctorX149 well yes ... he says that after 5 minutes of explaining the history behind the puzzle.
Also as others have mentioned the board has numbers on it, which clearly indicate that I'm not the brightest.
This proves once again that Tal is the greatest player of all time.
Interestingly, after the d8 promotion, the engine recommends king g4. It does now say that white is much better, but I think it prevents the checkmate combination.
Right, what makes this puzzle great is that forking the King+Queen isn't the best move. However, since it is the human instinct move to play, it's still remarkable to see how it is beaten
It would be interesting to see if AlphaZero can solve this.

If your opponent offers you a draw, try to work out why he thinks he’s worse off.
I used to offer draws when up a pawn in the opening against higher rated players on lichess, because I did not want to risk my free rating with possible blunders in the future.. and still this is my main reason to offer draws, if a position seems complicated I don't want to risk blundering it, offering a draw despite knowing that you are losing seems kinda rude tbh.
I was once offered a draw in a 3 days/move correspondence game. He was arguing that he has no time left to play the game as he has been sentenced to prison. I thought it funny, but in the end accepted the draw offer. I looked up better afterwards. Turns out he was losing a piece lmao.

Sadly that would be a hint for solving it.
@@axemtitanium Yeah, after I read this comment I solved it in 5 minutes
6:47 -- The reason engines (at least those that are set to not examine more than five lines simultaneously) cannot solve the puzzle is because they will not consider the Bc2+ line after Kg6, because it results in White being down two pieces (after Kxh5), and subject to forfeiting any new queen. However, if Bc2+ is manually played, then the engine finds the solution at Depth25. It used to be possible to adjust the settings on Chess(dot)com to have the engine examine ten lines simultaneously, but this was reduced to five maximum some half a year ago, with three being current default. (Low-grade cheaters using default-setting online engines will almost never be given the best moves in "hard" positions in any reasonable amount of time, say, as for Blitz.)
Furthermore, following d8=Q, after the engine finally discards Nf7+ (because it finds that this plus capturing the forked queen next turn results in White's king bottling up Black's with checkmate to follow), the engine will calculate endlessly without finding a forced mate for White even though it grants a rating of +8 fairly quickly. With Black refraining from the knight fork, he plays Kg4 instead, and will inevitably seize White's last pawn on g3, after which the material situation is White's queen versus Black's two knights and four pawns in an opposite-colored bishop game -- and Black is capable of lingering on for quite some time after that. With humans playing, it would be quite easy for White to blunder and lose tempo, enabling Black to queen a pawn and win.
I found that although initial evaluation by Stockfish (both versions 8, 11 installed on my laptop with 10 threads) went for Black, both versions checkmated black when played against each other (v11 against itself, v8 W vs v11 B). I haven't investigated the details yet, but thought that Agadmator should have proceeded w/ solving the puzzle w/ Stockfish regardless of initial eval. Chess evaluation can be a bit chaotic for some positions, I think this is just one of these instances.
@@sin2Pi ...they'll only find checkmate if your engine has enough lines such that Bc2 can make the "cut" for consideration, or if you manually fork king and queen with the knight. The position is strongly winning for White with correct play after Black eschew knight-forking, but it is very difficult for White to run a queen against two knights and four extra pawns with bishops still the board; i.e., Black has a lot of "action economy". It's basically a Magnus-style grind to defeat Black, with the first misstep costing you your advantage, and a second enabling Black to queen and easily win with his material advantage -- as he'll quickly have a second queen.)
I tried it in leela and stpckfish they failed but i thought because the engine prunes these moves what if i use an engine that prunes less, or annolder engine so i got rybka which is pretty old and it actually found the move being +3.66 for white at depth 25, but found the move instantly. Im guessing it has something to do with rybka not pruning the moves as early so it found it.
Incredible puzzle indeed, the solution is very complex yet very interesting, thank you so much for sharing..
I am not a big chess player, I have spurts of playing a bit for like a month every 2 years, but once I watched some 20+ videos about Tal, I somewhat absorbed some ideas and the very next few games felt incredibly simple. I disconnected from the machine-like thinking of every possible move, but looked at the board "from the top" sort to say.
I had amazing victory with sacrificing queen mid-game, and suddenly instead of trying to kill material felt that allowing the opponent to rush into my lines and then pinning his underdeveloped positions were much better solution.
In short - watching a lot of well presented material about something you know can bring you to next level or improve you, even if you don't immediately practice it.
(p.s. I have had same "breakthrough" in martial arts. I love mma, and have been training it for all life, but it took accidental interest in old-school mma and I found I absorbed a lot of much more convenient and effective approach. It is like watching McGregor all life, adapting to his style, training accordingly, but then you bump into 2 hour documentary about Fedor Emaialenko, and it makes you reevaluate your whole mma sports approach. )
One hell of a study. Well done Mr van Breukelen...thanks for presenting it here.
Tal just went up another level in my books. What a genius.
Agadmator: This is the best puzzle that I have ever seen!
Suren: DEJA VU.
My friends at the library are going to love this. Thanks Antonio!
Agad's hair after solving the puzzle: I'm mesmerized by the puzzle myself 😐🙉🙈🤣
8:38 even Antonio cracked up at this 😂😂 this is beautiful
Well as a student of Mikhail Tal I can tell you he didn't just go for a walk he had a smoke too and then he came back with the answer. I can imagine the smile on his face when he saw both knights on opposite sides of the board in his head. A real tactical magician rest in peace Tal.
The explanation is very very helpful & easy to understand. Thank you
Sick tactics. You gotta have a hell of a mind to solve this
I mean, you could not even imagine that during that walk he took a cell phone from the future and crack the problem 😂 that is next level
No I can't imagine it because the cell towers and internet would also be in the future. The future Tal must have figured out some way to insert himself into the past. Oh, oh, he's a time traveler.
I showed this puzzle to my friends in the library, the library management called the police for being a magician. Now I’m trying to get rid of the handcufs with this magic
Should have promoted to knight and you could jump the jail walls.
Amazing! I enjoy your videos, keep it up
5:18 just saving to come back for solution
2:14 I replayed that at least 10 times.
Did you notice that one of Kasparov's wins is missing?
Same here
why you didn't just paused it ?
@@priyanshuranjan5225 he's trying to understand the game bro I know he could have paused but it's his choice 😂
@@ujwalbharti3386 true lol
And in this position they called It “four knights endgame”
Fantastic, thank you agadmator for posting!
Interesting how the subconscious works and solves problems. - A Eureka moment.
That occasionally happened to me doing crossword puzzles (I was never particularly good).
