To some degree I suppose this song influenced me to move to Thailand. The original train station will apparently be discontinued by early 2021 as a sleek new soul-less one replaces it. 23 years after first hearing this, took the 17-hour journey from the south and would do so countless times. To check Colombian fields
The natives smile and pass along
    A sample of their yield
    Sweet Jamaican pipe dreams
    Golden Acapulco nights
    Then Morocco, and the East
    Fly by morning light
    [Chorus:]
We're on the train to Bangkok
    Aboard the Thailand Express
We'll hit the stops along the way
We only stop for the best
    Wreathed in smoke in Lebanon
    We burn the midnight oil
    The fragrance of Afghanistan
    Rewards a long day's toil
    Pulling into Katmandu
    Smoke rings fill the air
    Perfumed by a Nepal night
    The Express gets you there

Great song. I'm from Colombia and I always found it funny that Rush portrayed Bogota as surrounded by tropical jungle (in fact, Bogota is on top of a cold plateau, VERY FAR from the south jungles where strong narcotics are produced. However to Rush I forgive them this small detail, because RUSH is among the greatest and virtuous rock bands.
I aprove drugs legalization, as it would drastically reduce the associated deaths. Anti-drug fight has proven to be a failure worldwide and encourages crime (remmeber what happened in the era of alcohol prohibition in the U.S.) It's a public health matter. But it is true that many drugs left Bogota, because corrupt authorities and governments.

This is about the travails of using marijuana and opium grown in Bangkok.
In 2012, Alex Lifeson claimed that ‘A Passage to Bangkok’ (1976) is “about a fun little journey to all the good places you could go to have a puff.” He added that they thought the tune would be fun to write and that he felt drummer/lyricist Neil Peart handled it in a “very eloquent way.” He mentioned that the piece was most likely penned and sketched out with an acoustic guitar in front of a cassette player in a farmhouse. Rush liked to make initial recordings in that way before rehearsing.
The title is Neil Pearl’s play upon E.M. Forester’s novel “A Passage to India” (1924).
In 2009, Alex Lifeson cited Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” (1975) as an influence on this song. 💙🎵💛

I'm a great Rush fan, Rush were some of my favorite idols ever but i can't feel myself a little disapointed because they never played here, just in the first stop of this journey. I think, that drug related issue about Colombia was the only one that i didn't find offensive against my country because it was Rush of course hahaha, but i always dreamt about they playing this song in Bogota and myself shouting that first line like the most nice compliment ever!!!

Comparto su comentario, no puede uno ofenderse...Rush es Rush: Al menos nuestro país fue mencionado por una gran banda, y por algo que no es falso. Una lástima que Rush tan poco sean conocidos por estos lados, aparte de "Tom Sawyer"
