To me this song is about the nostalgia, rebelliousness and confusion of being a teenager. 1979 is when the singer/writer would have been a kid coming into adolescence. It's artsy in that it is more about painting the picture than describing it literally. Being an outcast teen, not knowing where you'll end up, feeling the urgency of the current moment, not worried about tomorrow, not caring how things turn out just going with the times and the music, to me, sounds like that too, it feels like that. It's why I love this song.

Wow, thank u so much for putting it all into perspective, so nostalgic for me as a kid growing up in the 70s..... The 90's bands were so kickass! I remember my daughter and me watching VH1 and MTV, we loved Smashing Pumpkins!!! We also loved Smashmouth, Maroon 5, Lit, Everclear, Green Day, Weezer, and No Doubt, omg I can go on and on! I love the 80's music, it's my second fave decade after the 70s, but the 90's bands will always hold a special place in my heart.🥰💞

YESSSSSS! It's long past time you did a Pumpkins song!!! (HInt: Please do Live next - "Lightning Crashes" is a phenomenal song.) "1979" is maybe my favorite of theirs, but in the 90s, these guys ruled alternative radio. "Today", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", "Disarm", "Cherub Rock", "Rhinoceros", "The Everlasting Gaze"... the list goes on and on. Billy Corgan is a truly underrated vocalist, and I'm glad you finally got to hear him. And yes, pleeeeez do more 90s. Other suggestions - "Sweetness & Light" by Lush; "Here's Where the Story Ends" by The Sundays; "Fait Accompli" by Curve; "Carolyn's Fingers" by Cocteau Twins; "Closer to FIne" by Indigo Girls. By the way, all of these suggestions would work for Female Friday.

Other songs from the 90's: PAVEMENT: Range Life (references Smashing Pumpkins), THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN: Far gone and out (a major influence on Smashing Pumpkins), RIDE : Time Machine (soundscape unlike anything heard before on this channel)... all critically acclaimed and highly influential!

Such a great song. I was 18 in 1979. I can totally relate to this song. Having a band play in my house and all my friends over their partying it up. lol. It was the 70s. We didn't have cell phones. Looking back on it now the 70s were so carefree. Could be because I was viewing it from the eyes of a teen. I lived in Florida during my teen years.
90s songs...What is Love, Torn, Smells like Teen Spirit, Sweet Child of Mine, Believe, I Want it That Way, Livin' La Vida Loca, Glycerine, Just a Girl, Intestate Love Song, One Headlight, for just a few 90s tunes. You've probably reacted to some of these already.

This is my very favorite band! I love Billy Corgan and this song was basically the song of my senior year so it has heavy nostalgia for me. “I know you better than you fake it,” best lyric.
This is probably their most well-known song and I like it, but in my opinion they have better ones that are more definitive of their sound. I could suggest so many but I’ll start with “Cherub Rock,” “Rhinoceros,” “Today,” “Disarm,” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” They definitely go harder and while they don’t consider themselves grunge, they were very much grunge-adjacent. Their wall of sound, fuzzy guitars on some of the earlier songs is very grunge imo. And yes, Billy does have a very distinctive voice. Not everyone likes it but tome it sounds like the 90s. I hope you’ll check them out again!
And yes, I definitely tee pee’d back in high school. This whole video looks like being a teen in the 90s 😂 (I could’ve also sworn you guys did this one!)

@@jeffreydavid6794 fair enough. I actually like a lot of 90's bands, including The Smashing Pumpkins. I do think 90's music was better than the 80's, but nothing compares to the late 60's to mid 70's. During that time artists were free to create whatever music they wanted all under the name "rock". In the late 70's and 80's record labels started labelling bands by the type of music they were supposed to produce, and bands were not really allowed to venture outside that label (ie. Heavy metal, punk, etc..). Music became quite formulated, and songs themselves had to fit airplay time, so rarely went over 5 minutes. You started to see some artistry come back in the 90's, but it still had to be radio friendly lenghts of songs. That's my opinion anyway, because I lived through all those decades, but music is a matter of taste. Good on you for recognizing the 70's though, even though it was before your time. 😉

@@jimschroeder1176 No you are exactly right. I stand corrected and I agree with everything you said. I was just caught up in the moment and I said something stupid. Haha. The majority of my favorite bands come from the 60's and 70's. I've been a serious musician my whole life and I had older siblings so I also grew up listening to and being influenced as a musician by bands like the doors, Pink Floyd, Yes, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, the Beatles, Deep Purple and I could go on and on. As far as musicianship and song writing goes, you just can not compare bands like this with Any bands from the 90's. However the 90's still hold a special place in my heart since I grew when bands like REM, Sound Garden, STP, No Doubt, Radiohead, Weezer, Live, etc. were doing their thing. That was back when we could actually watch music videos on MTV and VH1. And the music then was certainly a lot more "real" than the crap we have today. I have actually never been a huge fan of the Smashing Pumkins. Billy's voice is just too much for me. I do like 1979 though and it brought back memories.

Smashing Pumpkins! I Love Them SO MUCH! Billy Corgan's voice! They have a great, very unique sound. Yes, the 90s in my opinion was the last decade of great Rock n Roll. That was it. So called "Grunge" era. KICKS ASS! Great Great bands from that time: Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden. Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters. These bands are the arc and the end of Rock n Roll. Not that Rock n Roll doesn't live on and great music still happens. "Rock is Dead. Long LIve Rock." The Who. PS Smashing Pumpkins - Billy Corgan recorded a song with Mick Jagger interweaving vocals with Billy Corgan - Rat In A Cage. Great Song. Mick Jagger and Billy Corgan sing on the same key? I don't know. They have a symbiotic sound quality to their voices. Really Beautiful meld in that song. I think you would dig it.

Omg, Jimmy Chamberlin is EVERYTHING!!! When I was pregnant with my 3rd child, I was going out to meet up with some friends. I was taking the L, and what would usually be a super easy from the L stop to the venue (Beat Kitchen) seemed REALLY long, as it was a hot summer night, and being pregnant is like having your own personal furnace 🤣🥵. So as I was passing by Chicago Music Exchange, I could see that they were having an event, and all the doors and windows were open, and the A/C was blowing out. So I decided to stop in to cool down abd take a break before I continued on. Well, as I stepped in and tried to find a place to hang among the crowd, I realized that the event I had stumbled into was JIMMY FREAKING CHAMBERLIN!!! He was drumming live in store to Pumkins tracks and telling stories about how the songs came about, and stories about the road, and I was absolutely starstruck!!! After I'd cooled down and had enough energy to continue on to Beat Kitchen, I was still in a daze, not believe my luck! When I got there, I was telling my friends (some who had come in from around the country, some who were about to go onstage, and some who had just gotten off stage and let me take a load off and hang with them in merch) "you'll never BELIEVE where I just came from!!!" 🤩

    • @dgetzin

@@mamatay7 amazing story - reminds me of how incredible Chicago is and how important the L is so important to the culture and the city - going to the beat kitchen - probably you were on the brown line? Best view of the transforming city as you pass along that in my opinion. - especially as you go along Paulina and it rides very high up to pass over the Ravenswood metra commuter rail tracks. Jimmy is amazing - if you can find it (you probably can) listen to his jazz album. It is GOOD - not self indulgent AT ALL - this jazz album is what convinced me that (I’ll just say it) Jimmy is a better drummer than ginger baker! Come at me internet.
