I am so happy your film popped up in my face, I live in Los Angeles county. There are many wisconsinites here. I was born in Whittier and many changes have occured, my father would go to students home to keep them in school and made many friends. I like to go to the antique mall and look at the high school annuals and ride my bike past the owners homes, some would be 100 now. Thanks.
That bar you're standing in front of is the Trackside Inn. During trapping season November - March a bunch of us trappers would meet in there in the morning to warm up. They also had live music at night on the weekends. Back in the 50's it was a hotel. Looking south on the railroad tracks is one of the largest rail car repair facilities in the country. On the NE corner of 141 & W was the best fish fry in town :) The museum has (Maybe had) 2 buildings. The one you were standing in front of is the main museum and beside and a little behind was a log building. Around that building was a garden with native herbs and flowers which was a kitchen garden. My late wife worked on it. The museum is well worth the trip.
We went to Crivitz on vacation twice back in the 1970's. Stayed at the well known Schaffer's resort. They were famous for their excellent Chicken dinners. Looks like the town has grown over the years. Good times good memories !
Wow Crivitz sure is a busy town now. Kwik Trip invaded. Drove through back in 1968 while going up deer hunting. Stayed at The Pines Motel north of town. Ate at diner nearby. Thanks....brings back memories!
Love the Crivitz video’s use to live there at 501 FJ street. Worked at what used to be High View golf course also at the Christmas tree farm by Middle Inlet next to the cemetery. Hung out by the Doug store had a great soda counter. The counter was still there the last time I was up there. All the relatives are gone now but I still come back as often as I can. Thanks for the work you two do.
My brother Danny moved to Crivits 6 years ago because of his job transfer to the Crivitz Hydros. And that the 4 Dams on the Peshtigo Caldron Falls, High Falls, Johnson Falls, and Sandstone Rapids are what made up for all of the recreation that attracted people. Wisconsin Public service created the Dams. High Falls was built in 1910. The office and shop of the WPS Eastern Hydros is just down from the Vetinary Clinic. :)
Nice video Sally about a small town. Been a long time since I was up there. I think Crivitz burned in the Peshtigo fire October 1871 that killed over 2000 people. Entire families died, towns burned and never rebuilt. There was multiple fires at the end of 1800s in Northern Wisconsin from multiple drought years and I think Crivitz burned in 1890s also. Just going off memory which it is early in the morning and slow. Peshtigo fire I think is still considered the most deadly fire in USA history. Fourth grade Wisconsin history one of my daughters did a report on the Peshtigo fire and the teacher had never heard about the Peshtigo fire. My children learned so much more traveling around the USA and seeing places than they did in school. Hope you and family stay safe and healthy.
By one of those unexplainable circumstances (as you probably know), the Peshtigo fire happened the same night as the Chicago fire, which had a much smaller loss of life, I believe (an old lady and a cow.) The Chicago papers had more readership. Peshtigo lost just about everything.
@@badgerpa9 I know that are farther apart by foot. The person who wrote this comment up above said they thought crivitz burned with the peshtigo fire but I was pointing out how far apart the two towns are. I also live 10 minutes away from crivitz and have never heard of it burning with peshtigo.
@@conniestilwell4545 check with the Crivitz museum. The fire went to the Oconto river. Many areas burned that did not make a paper at the time so it is not talked about. There where massive fires on the UP Michigan the same time.
Crivitz is my home......actually I'm 4 miles east, 500 yards from Lake Noquebay on a dead end gravel road. I'm originally from Philly, lived in Miami 14 years then outside Philly for another 19. My wife is fourth generation Crivitz native. This is the most wonderful place I ever imagined. We're on a beautiful wooded 5 acres with a large garden, chickens, a natural spring and a peaceful existence. Our neighbors can't be seen from our spot but we all....there are just eight houses on the lane which is cut right through a forest....get along fantastically. Think hippy commune without the hippies, invasion of privacy or cult leader. A couple of times a year we all gather at the lake and have a party. I give eggs and maple syrup to neighbors, they return a kindness in some form or another. Town gets hectic during "season", when the "shackers" show up. Shacker has a dual meaning. One is a generic term for vacationers, the other is less savory. Some of them, very few but enough to notice, get too noisy, drive too fast, drink too much, etc. We celebrate their arrival...and their departure. But they bring economy and for that we are thankful for them. We just get our in town things done before Friday. I like to give them eggs to enhance their Up North weekend....kids love to get eggs from the nesting boxes. Crivitz has a phenomenal Community Center. It is part of the Teen Center and a daycare for younger kids. This was all paid for by the heiress to the Wrigley Gum recipe. Her great...or great-great... grandfather invented the recipe and took payment in royalties which still flow into the 4000 acre Thunder Mountain Ranch she was part owner of back in the 1970's. She gave the village the money, they built this center. Along with teens and kids we also have a gym with all the trimmings...and a skateboard park. It set a tone and built a community that is proud and protective of it's assets and close knit citizens. Then there is the Castle playground, climbing stuff, swings, slides and right across from it is an ice cream shop. Kids do indeed ride snowmobiles to school. And when the kids pour out of the several schools there is no mayhem or disrespect, they are amazingly well behaved. Food. There are incredible places to eat here. None are fancy, all are excellent. There will be arguments about this but for me the best fried chicken, ever, is Sky Harbor 2. Burgers....The Backwater Grill. Prime rib, The Riverside. Breakfast, The Gateway....which doubles as a very active bar the rest of the day, live music, fund raisers, etc. Then there is The Hummingbird, Checkerboard, Loopy's, and a couple of others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Trails and forest roads. We have them, lots of them. And a horse camp, it's for people who ride, 20 something miles of forest trails to ride. AtV trails. Nearby Twin Bridges offers whitewater rafting, camping, fishing and yet more food. The Sportsman and Nimrods are the standouts...for me. Others will point to Rene's, Twin Bridge Resort or The Hilltop. Rent a boat from Popp's, spend the day on the "flowage", a lake formed behind a dam built in the early 1900's. We have no crime. Someone dumps something and Facebook lights up hoping we find who did it. Sometimes we do. The only murder in my almost 12 years here was 11 years ago by a guy not from here. I can literally drive an hour and not see another car. I'll see more deer or turkeys than people. Explore a bit and more comes into view, more nature, more beauty, more peace. Oh boy is Sally wrong about the little brick building! It has been several things but the last one...Briars and Brambles..moved to a larger building half a block away, an old movie theater. They are doing great, as is the shop across from it..antiques and crafted goods,...which is next to The Hummingbird Cafe. There are two more shops there, gift shops. Up the road 3 miles is a fantastic antique shop, Collector's Paradise, down from them is one of the eateries I forgot, the I Don't Know Saloon. Good lord girl...get some chickens! They are allowed in the village...just not roosters. The feed mill is ancient and it's were I get chicken feed, dog and cat food and other items necessary to my lifestyle on a homestead. Two brothers own it, I shoot trap with one of them...maybe both. They look alike to me. My wife's father used to get his stuff there too. Now I take his great granddaughter with me to the mill. Get out of the village and the rules cease. Chickens, turkeys, goats, pigs....we even have a homesteader's page where we share ideas, and gather information. Winters. ya either love them or hate them. But there is no way around it, they are beautiful. I heat with wood, mostly, and it warms us down to our souls. And Crivitz is where we take care of those souls with everything we need to thrive.
