- The Race for affordable Electric cars has begun.
And Industry leaders in China are about to make this dream a reality!
While Tesla expands its business by investing MILLIONS in a Lithium refinery plant, China bets on cheap Next-Gen Sodium-Ion Batteries!
For this reason, the largest Chinese Battery Manufacturers in the world, CATL, and BYD have already begun mass production of sodium-ion battery!
Even though many experts thought it would only be suitable for stationary batteries, China's biggest Electric Vehicle manufacturer BYD, shocked the Industry with the first sodium-ion battery electric car!
BYD has deployed a sodium ion battery in a small city runabout and created the MOST affordable electric car for less than 10.000$!
However, BYD plans to implement this new battery technology across its entire BYD electric car range as it offers many advantages over lithium-ion battery!
With BYD having many successful electric cars such as the byd atto 3, byd seal, byd than, byd tang and also successful in battery technology with the byd blade battery The company has the potential to bring the salt battery to the mainstream!
What is this new electric car with a sodium-ion battery all about? Could this be the Future of Electric Vehicles?
How good is the car in reality, and can it compete with the Lithium competitors? And will this transition the industry away from lithium?

Great to see more battery material options coming! This will only make EV’s more accessible and cheaper
Thank you China for saving the world
Congratulations on such an amazing EV battery breakthrough.
Thank you CATL for this new Sodium Iron battery
With the cold weather performance, charge acceptance, high cycle life and low cost, Na ion batteries would be a great replacement for lead acid in deep cycle, starter and accessory batteries. Many EV's still use lead acid for accessory batteries. I wonder when we will see them in the aftermarket.
I think Lithium iron will dominate the next few years of the ev battery industry until the next big thing comes
@@The.Futurist yes. Lifepo4 is the best now
@@The.Futurist He means the battery found in petrol cars, for the lights and that.
Lead acid battery is still more stable with good charge cycle. But there’s a good chance they can be replaced by solid state batteries like Sodium Ion if kinetic charging, lead acid battery depends produce sufficient AmpH input. Also the 12 v compared to 3.2v for LFP and possibly also Sodium Ion.
中国应该今年看不见产品发布
For those prices I'm pretty sure you're going to see rubber components perish within a year or two that in an ordinary western vehicle would last 20 years.
Young Chinese dare to dream. Chinese always work in optimum level - cost effective, affordable for all and availability
That seems to be a very interesting Projekt. let see how i goes in the Future. May the Futurist keep us up to Date 🥰
If BYD are introducing Na-ion batteries this year, they must be pretty confident in the technology. In which case, it will advance further and we'll start seeing these batteries in more cars over the next five years. LiFeP batteries were lagging behind Li-ion batteries for a number of years, but their lower cost, greater robustness, no need for Co or Ni, and safety and longevity means their drawbacks, less energy dense and cold weather problems, are outweighed by their pluses. I would certainly buy a car with a LiFeP battery.
VW also plans sodium-ion batteries ... so it seems a common sense between car manufacturers... generally I think solid state is the future as NIO is doing for it's two models ET5 and ET7
Pictures of the Seagull being delivered to dealerships across China are already out....
Very interesting !
Thanks for sharing and take care.
Fantastic news. Lithium is finished !!!
If they can keep those low prices across all models and export across the world with relatively low prices, they will win market share.
Or they can just build factories, so no need for exporting
@@Krahamus right, which they already are doing and have been doing
Jai Hinduja. There are millions of homeless people in the West led by US. Rather than the current Chinese characteristics lineup, I would suggest BYD builds a cheap Sodium city combo EV that is also safe and comfortable for napping at night.
@@AWildBard Yah i know they been doing, but not all countries or regions still have factories.
Don't worry, the Chinese can't do much except steal technology! The future of technology still depends on Korea! Korean people have high IQ, excellent race, Chinese people have a lot of ideas and culture from the Korean nation! For example, Tai Chi!
Nope. Not until the sodium battery charge cycles can match lithium AND its size is the same for the same capacity. Currently they are large and heavy, as their energy density is half that of lithium and have a charge cycle less than 1000. Lithium is 3500 - 5000. So they wouldn't last as long. They are an improvement on lead acid, though.
Really a dream comes true.
So here is some goofy math. If Sehol's vehicle can do 400k miles in its life time and costs $10,000, that is 40 miles / $1 vs an ICE getting 35 mpg (pie in the sky number) costing say $3.50 per gal of fuel (this is also very generous) is 10 miles / $1. That is apples and oranges yes, but I am willing to bet that the cost to charge the Sehol vehicle over its lifetime is going to be cheaper then buying an American ICE vehicle. That is some too good to be true levels of costs savings.
Yeah if the electricity prices stay „low“ than yes it will. But as more people jump on ev‘s more demand will increase electricity prices st long term. But its definitely more efficient for sure
Excellent Video because, video clips sequences are excellent matches with voice comments in the video. Great video 👍👍👍
Energy storage and EVs in Cold climates, would be perfect for sodium ion batteries. LFP for the Hot climates.
Snow blowers and lawn mowers, where you don't care about size or weight.
LFP and other Li chemistries are not very good in hot climates. I live in the tropics. Lifetime for Li-batteries is about 3 years. I hope the Na batteries will perform better in hot climates. Environmentally in the tropics en subtropics (where the majority of the global population lives) Li-ion is outperformed by traditional ICE. Technically they can design Li-ion batteries that perform better in hot climates, but that comes at a cost and people here are not willing to spend extra money for a product that performs less, just for a promise of a longer lifetime.
so, Sodium disadvantage over Lithium Iron are Range and Performance
Meanwhile the advantages are
price, safety, stability, charging time, lightweight, no rare earth metal and easier to recycle
well done CATL
Yeah, thats well summarized, whereas in the winter of colder Regions sodium performs better
Thanks!
More good news as technology moves ahead to overcome hurdles along the way. As the video clearly says, this is great news for shorter trips and city runabouts. Given time, the technology will improve even further and energy density along with it. The responses to this below and all the nay sayers as usual, will once again be proved wrong as their vision is blinkered. I drive a LFP powered BYD here in Australia and I'm amazed by it's performance and 400kM range.
Yeah, fast charging and cheap & safe battery are the future of e-cars, "automatic driving" is not the must-have demand.

Now that various corporations have seen there is money to be made in batteries and EVs, they are doing the hard basic battery research they should have been doing 15 years ago. Very impressive work 👏

Looks interesting if it is already in a position to compete with LFP. Can these newer batteries also charge to 100% regularly?
The new Tesla M3 RWD with 305 miles range meets a lot of people’s needs so if the batteries could be swapped for no reduced performance in terms of energy density, gives faster charging, better cold weather performance and reduced cost it seems like there’s no downside.
never thought Lithium battery is environmental friendly. Now Sodium makes much more sense
Might even be the case in the future where E car batteries become user removable , as in case of e scooters.
- Sodium-ion batteries have a lower voltage (2.5V) than lithium-ion batteries (3.7V), which means they may not be suitable for high-power applications that require a lot of energy to be delivered quickly.
- They have a slower charge/discharge rate than lithium-ion batteries, which may not be suitable for applications that require a lot of power to be delivered quickly (such as electric vehicles).
- Sodium-ion batteries still have limited charge cycles before the battery begins to degrade, and some lithium-ion battery chemistries (such as LiFeP04) can reach 10,000 cycles before degrading.
it seems..........there is always a downside because we are only human!
@@cg986
[The cycle performance is not sure yet. Judging from the current relatively mature products, the cycle life of sodium-ion batteries is lower than that of lithium-ion batteries, ...]
Referring to the actual products, it can be seen that the current energy density of sodium-ion batteries is generally around 100-150Wh/kg, while that of lithium-ion batteries is 120-180Wh/kg. There is still a gap between them, and this gap is still difficult to match. However, with the development of anode materials, the energy density of sodium-ion batteries will continue to increase. If they can achieve the same level as lithium iron phosphate batteries, I think they are qualified to independently drive electric vehicles. ] quoted
Look like the 🔋 🔋 that comprised of Sodium-ion even heavier/ Cost less but how much weight we want a BEV to be? 1000lbs heavier than an ICE Car? That extra Weights already consume/release more Emissions/ CO2 or Methane to the Ozone Layers. And in Extreme Weather like Winter-Canada ─ Good Lucks! BEV owners!

The internet has many BYD cars on fire. Go check.
And think how much Li would be freed up if we used alternate technologies for static applications. And these other batteries are superior to Li batteries in everything but weight. They are made from cheap, readily available elements, are safer from a fire point of view, can be cycled from 0 to 100% with not damage, last far longer, need simpler charging/discharging electronics and can be recycled more simply, if you ever need to recycle them. There are the liquid metal batteries based on SbCa or AlS (with new chemistries being tested), the ZnBr flow/plating or gel batteries, a whole range of redox batteries based on V and Fe (so far) and of course the mentioned Na batteries. Note, for instance, that the famous Hornsdale 180mWh battery contains enough Li for 3000 60kWh EVs.
Congratulations BYD/CHINA
You even had a shot of the rear end of the car with Build Your Dreams clearly visible. BYD stands for Build Your Dreams, plural.
Danke!
BYD is already by far the world's largest EV manufacturer. In another 2 years, it will be the world's largest auto manufacturer. It's inevitable. They're just starting to sell outside of China but in January 2023 they sold almost as many EVs as Tesla, BMW and Volkswagen combined.
BYD has over 20 years experience building EVs. Not consumer vehicles but for commercial uses. They have the experience and credibility.
Lookup the videos surfacing of million of byd cars brand new in overgrown fields in restricted territories of china. Government coverup of byd cars breaking down brand new and they just ship em to the middle of nowhere

Will BYD include these batteries to electric commercial vehicles as well?
BYD makes those batteries for their EVs.
You forgot to mention the price of lithium has fallen 50% over the last 4 months
That is still $25 000 tone
A battery is more than just lithium and because of better production the price of Li-batteries keeps coming down.

We don't have enough lithium in this world
China moves at breathtaking speed.
Thats true. Sad thing is, they doing that while western countries are busy debating about how many genders there actually are 🤦🏻♂️
Other than for very short ranges, Sodium Ion for EVs will only work for longer ranges when paired with sulfur which can store more of it. That's coming in a few years. However, where sodium will help out immeasurably is in standionary storage freeing up more Lithium for EV's, including for Lithium-sulfur batteries.
@@newtunesforoldlogos4817 That's why I'm looking at plug-in hybrid for now. Short trips to stores and commute (my drive to train station is 6 miles). These can be 100% electric. if sodium battery works, that mean there's a chance we can implement sodium battery to hybrid cars, which is make them cost cheaper and safer.
what a game changer!
Wasn't the last year that they made blade battery that will change the world ?
Cool
Its a start. Technology is continuously on the move. Sooner rather later, we will have a battery that is cheap, safe, gives more mileage, and recyclable. Then you can change batteries like you change those in your flash light.
The cycle life plot you show says 20% capacity fade will occur after 400-500 cycles at 4.2V, but you use it to say the battery will last 2000-3000 cycles. Cycle life is still the key issue delaying Na-ion from hitting the market.
but it is an intermediate. If you buy an EV for $10k in 2023 while the tech is new and you get 6-8 years out of it, that is fine because in 2030 they are going to be a lot better and cheaper. It is just better we get away from lithium as soon as possible. Just having mass production of sodium batteries ensures they will improve every year.
Nice
I'll believe it when I see it

Hmmm - how about taking sodium out of sea water? You can make batteries from the sodium and create drinking water in the process - possibly have only a fraction of the brine from desalination.

In the next decade or earlier there will be millions of EVs coming up for battery replacement. Can the same battery pack fit sodium ion batteries instead of LFP. I hope the dimensions and voltage characteristics are being kept identical to help in easy transition for existing EV users. It will be a game changer for sure if that happens. Let this news of easy transition for battery replacement break out and it’ll drive EV sales exponentially today. Nobody would be scared of buying an EV due to high battery replacement costs in future. A no brainer provided it can be swapped out with a lower cost Na-ion battery pack which can like to like replace the LFP battery pack.

I doubt it.
I hope BYD performs as well as this video promotes. Sandy Munro says BYD will be on top in China by 2030. Now it's time to show us. Tesla plans to use salt to extract lithium, both abundant and getting cheaper to refine. Lithium provides most power for transportation and storage in most any electrolyte combination. John Goodenough's battery research looked at salt and other elements and chose lithium for good reason. Even so, cheap fast rechargeable batteries will sell in every case as they will be purpose built.
Price performance ratio is always going to be the best option as it is more affordable. However, they cant match with the performance of lithium wich will be the gold in our future world!
Well, if you are talking about sales in China alone, BYD already No.1 in 2023, at least first 2 months.
BYD is now the largest car manufacturer in China. In the Chinese market, they are now selling far more cars per month than VW and Toyota.

Thats not 100% true. Sodium ion batteries can reach up to 3000 charging cycles. The batteries are at the beginning of development. However, they cant compete with LFP batteries in terms of charging cycles, that for sure
How many charges we can get from 2000 cycles
2000*200 or 400,0000 fucking KM
Honestly, I drived a lot in China and my daily commute was 65km or American range and 2500 family vacation + 200km country house ... and my BMW only gathers 20,000KM/year
so forget about lasting 400k, realistically, 200K is plenty for many.
If I am still in China right now, I will ditch my BMW 330 2017 ... nothing beat about 5K USD per year saving by going EV and the shitty little dingy car is more than enough to get around in the big city anyway
I remember seating in a 2017 shitty Beijing Auto EV, that thing in the city is as quiet as my dads 2017 Lexus G hybrid
We are talking about different beast when going EV ... dingy shitty cars is pretty much the same noise level as IC 80KUS cars in the city
I still want ICs for longer trip but anything can be supercharged at 240-300KW and the battery lasts 2.5-3h per charge which the sodium ion battery offers then it might also move up a level or two... till then the cheaper the better
Will it explode?
