You are right to point out that there is something a bit strange with the XBox Series X and it's Black Levels - it does that in other modes too - like when using VRR. But I think it's not so bad that a bit of fiddling with your TV setting won't mostly compensate for it. For someone like me who isn't going out and buying racks and racks of discs it's perfectly adequate I feel.

If you're ok with less than ideal blu-ray playback then the console is fine. If you want the best possible image you can get then you want a dedicated blu-ray player.
Someone who is watching on a Vizio, TCL, or Hisense isn't going to notice a difference. Someone who is watching on a high end OLED very well could.
There are other things a dedicated blu-ray player can do that a console can't as well, like play SACD, DVD-A, video and audio files from USB, etc. It all comes down to what you expect to get from the player and what it's worth to you. Same reason Microsoft is selling an XSS as well as an XSX, not everyone needs/wants the top of the line and that's perfectly fine.

@@darrenhayes7786 I can't speak for LG players as I've never had one, but I have had a few Sony players and have had great luck with them. The drive in the Xbox may be made by Samsung but the playback depends entirely on the Xbox blu-ray app. I'm not sure if they've changed it or not but on the original Xbox One console I own the audio output was inferior to a standalone player.
Not sure what 30, 60, and 120fps has to do with anything. What tv are you watching on?
Just watching this video I could see a difference between the two players. On an OLED there's a big difference between near-black and black. If the Xbox player raises the black level then that would ruin the true-black of an OLED. Like I said though, if the Xbox player is good enough for you then that's fine. I'm not trying to say I'm better than you because I want a standalone player. I wish I wasn't as picky in regards to picture and audio quality, it would save me a ton of money.

I initially upgraded to 4K bluray with the XBOX One X at launch in 2017 (I'd had a 4K LG LED TV and PS4 Pro for a year prior). My initial thought was it will be great, 2 for 1 but found the One X player to have a washed out image with poor HDR regardless of how I adjusted the settings (gaming was fine though).
As a result I bought an LG UBK80 player as I'd changed TVs to a Samsung QLED (didn't originally go for an OLED because I was worried about burn in) and because Samsung don't support Dolby Vision didn't need the UBK90.
I recently upgraded my whole bedroom AV set up due to the new consoles to a 55" LG OLED CX6LA TV (supports 4K / 120Hz with HDMI 2.1 and VRR), Sony UBP-X800M2 4K BR player, PS5 and XBOX Series X.
Tried the XSX BR player app and still found it to be washed out plus the app currently doesn't support Dolby Vision for movie playback although the console does supports it for gaming. I suppose a firmware update will fix it eventually but I really like Dolby Vision.

I had the exact same thought but figured I'd be alone in this... Good to see I'm not crazy! I suspected mr villaman was making them different colors as a way to label them which is cool but the way the colors surrounding an image affect its perception is profound. This is why I'm not a fan of entertainment center bias lighting in general; it's neat in theory but its effect can be oddly too influential over the perceived temperature of the image. Great video nonetheless!

I guess I’m a finicky control freak because your description of the UB820 is exactly what I’m looking for. I have been an Xbox owner of all generations of microsoft consoles with the series x being the exception (not enough content yet to warrant a purchase). I have not been entirely impressed thus far with the software blu ray player of the Xbox One X. It’s ok. I am very curious as to the performance of the PS5 in terms of the blu ray performance. I would guess that the lack of controls that the series x has with the software blu ray player (in contrast to the UB820) will be equivalent to the PS5 as well. I look forward to your next video. Having played both Dolby Vision and regular HDR10 movies on the UB820, there's a big difference/upgrade compared to the Xbox UHD player.
I highly recommend those who can, to purchase a dedicated UHD player. I chose the Panasonic UB820 because it's regarded as one of the best players out there, and because it auto switches to Dolby Vision display.

Love the Xbox though, but I really bought it exclusively for gaming. The Panasonic player is waay to slow to navigate though, but that picture and sound quality more than makes up for it for me, when used with a calibrated Panasonic OLED.

One thing I find almost as important as the quality of the videos is the capabilities of resolution upscale.
For example, watching full HD movies on an Xbox One on a 4K display is unacceptably bad because the movie is like 1/4 of the display size and there's 3/4's black "bazels" and you cannot adjust it through the tv because then all other elements on the Xbox is F'ed up.
