Trees are a renewable resource and it helps to think of them as a crop being harvested. These taken will likely be replanted, very few are offended when corn is harvested. Trees of this size obviously take longer than a solar year but still only the blink of an eye in earth's history from long before we climbed out of the trees and will likely continue long after our species relents dominance to the next.
If it's so sad and you think that he's destroying the environment, then you better not live in a wood house or use paper of any kind or any of the other thousands of products made from wood???
...or toothpicks, handles for axes, hammers, ... or teaching kids a trade in woodshop in schools how to use lathes, jigsaws, band saws, planers, or pattern making, etc ....... tables, chairs, and other furniture and carpentry.

I use to fall tree's just as big or larger. We use to bet amongst us. We wood set a spike down the line of fall, to see if we could drive the spike into the ground. I won a $1,000 bucks that day and days after. Just bragging, but true. More power to you all.🙏😎
Never have seen a timber faller use that small of an undercut when felling a tree. Also falling that tree across the slope poses a challenge to buck the tree into logs, setting chokers, etc. 32-foot logs set to roll downhill. Not very safe. Better to fall trees up or down the slope.
This isn't California. Down the hillside and it torpedoes to the bottom and blows up and probably destroys other timber. Up the hillside and it could kick and take off butt first down the hill creating a whole other dangerous situation.

Back in the '70s & '80s, my Pappy fell trees in ritzy neighborhoods and for friends of his who also worked for the USFS but weren't tree fallers. He was a climber also. For the Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest he was Transportation Planner/Engineer (road designer and builder) and went to every major forest fire in the US, before the eruption of Mt St Helens, after the eruption he spent most of his time in the Volcano Center in downtown Vancouver Wa (this was before the Cascades Volcanic Observatory was established) where he was airtraffic controller over the mountain. He retired in 1990. He taught me to be a great ground man but i never got into the industry, other than helping friends with the falling of trees and the clean up. Fun times for sure, especially the Mt St Helens experience.
I knew cutters that went to work after st Helen's blew. My dad worked in the woods all his life and residential tree service. My grandpa logged all his life also, then built road for forest service in northern Washington st. I still live in the area and took over from my dad after he died in 90.

I agree I have cut timber for 45 years and some hardwood that was 6 feet through and it was hard as he is making look like it is but every man does it his on way, but he got it to the ground
Well, unfortunately, just because you notch a tree and then back-cut it, doesn't mean it will fall in the direction you think. You need to look carefully at the lean, weight distribution, and several other factors. Please leave it to professionals.
Sometimes you want a high stump to catch the next big one so you can buck the loggs. And if you don't take a little time and care you will destroy the entire piece of wood by breaking it. Most people that haven't done the job don't understand that it's o.k. Two truck loads in that one tree. Smart Ass 😆
They don't call em widow makers for nothing. Looks a tad safer than my box cut but quite a bit slower. That's pretty much the largest I've taken down. To add to the excitement it was in the proximity of a house but unlike many I made sure no one was home!
I take it that you only have a 2 pack a day cigarette habit with that job.lol. hard work at its highest level. I use to climb trees for a company that specialized in tight quarters removal. Let me tell you folks it ain't easy. Cheers

It takes a lot of know to cut these big tree properly. If you do it wrong the whole tree is ruined and you look stupid. You don't sacrifice craftsmanship for speed.

I saw in youtube they are using hydraulic jack instead of wedges.
