Very sad to see the old fellows get cut down. I realize they are seen as consumables but the really big ones are hundreds & hundreds of years old & lost in a blink mainly for $$$. I hope they serve a noble purpose after they’re down. Maybe they are diseased or are infested with insects and need to go to preserve a larger stand.

Watching these videos and reading the comments always makes me want to soapbox, so here goes
Almost no one in the conservation industry has a clue how to do it. A few years ago, the worlds most famous giant sequoia tree (the tunnel tree) in yosemite park blew down. The park management decided to let it decay naturally.
With how rare and expensive sequoia wood is, the tree would have been valued at 20 to 80 million dollars. With that money, the park could have sold it, bought several thousand acres of land, set up a trust for it, and planted the whole place with new sequoia trees.
Everyone always talks about keeping big trees standing, but no one outside the timber industry ever talks about putting land aside and planting new ones, even when the money is there, lying on the forest floor, waiting to be used in new conservation efforts.

@@mistercohaagen I think what I was saying might not have been clear enough as this has nothing to do with capitalism. It's one thing when a for profit company fails to do the right thing. In the case I'm using, we're talking about a park - these people's career is to do conservation, every employee of yosimite park is tasked with conservation as their career. YET - not only did they fail to use the value of the world's most valuable tree for conservation, but they didn't even think to sell it and keep the money for themselves. These people, people who complain every year about how they don't have enough money to properly engage in conservation efforts, watched 80 million dollars or more one of the world's biggest pieces of ecological history rot away on the ground, neither smart enough to use it, nor greedy enough to take it. If they'd sold that tree, I can guarantee that there would be hundreds if not thousands of little monuments built from that wood, preserved for generations. Instead they let it decay into a hundred dollars worth of fertilizer.

I clear land for a living sometimes, and yes bringing down big trees is always a regretful moment. I've had customers want me to take down all the big hardwoods in their yard just for the F of it. I walked off the job and told him to find someone else. I've talked a lot of people out of a lot of senseless fellings. There used to be trees in the "Boot heal" of Missouri, that had a diameter of 12'. Humans greed and lust for destroying everything we touch ended that.

I like the one with the guy Working on the big yellow pine. I'm 54.when I was a kid my old man was one of the best fallers in the area I grew up in . I was born and raised in Redding California and the mountains surrounding. He got to cut a lot of old growth and some big Punkins. I was probably about 12 years old and he can a big fir tree up around bucks Lake area 11' across the stump. He had a 40" or a 42" bar On his stihl chainsaw. That's about all that 056 super could take. I loved to watch him cut those big trees. He'd shut that saw off and you'd start to here and that ssshhhhhhhhhhhh They look like they were in slow motion but they'd start picking up speed and that noise would get louder and when they hit the ground the whole Earth rumbled under your feet. Only thing I've ever felt like it is a couple Of NHRA dragsters going down the track at the same time. It's a rush... PG&E hired him one time to cut a big dead Cedar that was leaning over their big power lines. Now we had been sliding down there and taken Cedar snags and split them into rails. So of course the piss furs were trying to catch us. They even came in on Saturdays or Sundays to try to catch us but they never did. They always knew it was us. When they needed that Cedar taken down they didn't have anybody that could handle it, and they paid him a lot of money to cut that Cedar down, and he said they had to give us all the wood as well. I can't remember how many rails were in that tree, but it was thousands.... The Cedar tree was probably 8 or 9' across the stump, and tall. A couple of 20 ton shorty's, and it was on the ground .Down the Hill.

Never stand behind the direction of the fall, the tree could “jump the stump” which means the bottom where you cut shoots back in the opposite direction of the fall. A stump shot (back cut is higher than the front) is cut to prevent this, but it can still happen.

Everybody cries! Oh no!! Not the big over ripe danger tree standing alone just waiting for a nice gust of wind to mash it to pieces all over the earth so the bugs can finally get to it easier....wait...well shit, that one was already dead anyways! Hate to save something like that, for houses or something helpful right!? Leave it to the bleeding hearts, screaming HOW COULD UOU BASYARDS MURDER SUCH A MAGNIFICENT TREE!! WELL, before we get started here, one was already hurting, another stood alone, and that is a recipe for destruction regardless! Trees only have safety from wind in numbers. But the saddest part for me, during this whole video, is reading these type of comments about sad *save these big tree's...smh!! Umm, guess what, we do not even cut them anymore! Its over for the most part unless its private ground or specialty....and sometimes salvage is not unheard of here In Washington state but it doesn't happen often. You sniveling prices finally won! Now the spotted owl can have a perfect view of the old growth as it rots away and succumbs to the foul weather, disease, and finally death! Well it would have had a perfect view...if it had not of been for the REAL reason for the spotted owls ultimate demise! Which was AND still is, the cannibalistic and obviously superior cousin the Barred owl. For example, the Olympic National Park, is just short of 1,000,000 acres of mostly untouched and accessed by horseback or on foot...other than a couple of longer park roads that help get you into the foothills. If one million acres of land that had already been put aside and saved for our children and theirs to enjoy later, was not enough to protect the damn birds, the who was the genius that decided, well then apparently they need more land to survive?? Huh? And poof now you have even more Forest that cannot help save this stupid bird that we are losing to extinction BECAUSE IT WAS EATEN BY THE STRONGER SPECIES....SO it kinda looks like we should just blame evolution!? Meanwhile years later a neat old video comes on and folks want to grab up pitchforks and storm into the now deserted timber of the pacific northwest! These amazing people that stop at nothing to shed that tear for THEIR FRIEND the tree! Then they eventually go home, open the wooden door, stomp across their wood floors and grab a nice rice cake and vegetable smoothie from the old wooden cupboard, flop down in that big fat assed recliner that is framed with that disgusting wood most likely harvested from some poor family of squirrels that never had a chance...pull the big wooden handle Strait back into the RELAX position...THERE!! You can finally take that break from all that save the planet stuff! You watch the news praying all that bleeding heart shit, will eventually catch on, and more hypocrites will join the fight and help shut down a few more jobs from those goddam forest raping loggers that toil dat and night trying to make sure nobody has any oxygen!

If you really think “every” bit of a harvested tree is used for something, you are sorely mistaken. Depending on the operator, tree species, local markets, etc., there is a LOT of wood that remains in the woods…which is not necessarily a bad thing, as these remains decompose and provide nutrients for the new generation of growth. But don’t deceive yourself (or anyone else) that all logging results in complete use of the trees.
