The Gran Turismo theme of this video was so pleasing. Great video!
Keep the Gran Turismo thing going! This was awesome!
The results would have been more interesting if you did this on a tighter, twistier track
I want a JCW Mini. I actually prefer the looks of the older model than the brand new ones
Shout Out To Gran Turismo 3!
That GT3 thing through the video is so cool!
HOLY MOTHER OF FLASHBACKS!!!!
You have awoken many, many vague memories!
Gran Turismo FTMFW!!!
The Gran Turismo theme was perfect throughout. I especially liked the track selection and then the racing camera angle. Superb entertainment.
Oh yeah, give me the Miata anyday.
Grant Turismo 3 effects lol! Good work, Autocar!
He never put it into go cart mode! The indication is that the LED around the center display is yellow it should be red,
I mean on the Mini
Besides the minis 0-60 its so much faster !
You can set the LED every colour you like. It's a setting that the LED will indicate in which mode it's in. I for example turned it off in my MINI JCW.
This video had me grinning from ear to ear, all those beautiful camera shots and Gran Turismo sound effects are awesome.
The gran turismo theme was great. I wouldn't mind if you keep at it. :)
The best there? Renault Sport Clio 4 RS Trophy 220 of course. In all facts Renault Sport built the best sport hothatch cars in their categories always.
Must agree tried all the other small hot hatches, clio by far the best.
Kind of a broad statement, Renault doesn’t provide an overall quality like Mini for example. Their cars might be 1 sec faster on a track but that doesn’t make them necessarily the best sport hothatch cars
Absolutely loved the GT theme! Brought back incredible memories.
Seems like the MX5 could use another 30HP or so. That and a slightly firmer suspension and it would probably win. Still, I agree 100% that they are fun cars to drive, regardless of their performance figures. Great, GREAT little driver's car! I loved my '91 MX5. Traded it for my FD in '95 and I still miss the MX5 at times -- especially the convertible.
ZOOM-ZOOM!
Love the Gran Turismo reference. keep doing it
Great stuff! Really enjoyed this one.
AHH! Hearing that music from Gran Turismo 3's Arcade mode makes me feel like a kid again. Amazing.
That Gran Turismo opening brought back so many memories
Put the JCW into sports mode!
Love the retro Gran Turismo theme!! Brings back good memories.
0:13 goddamn I will never forget that menu and that sound when you click on something
One of the best car videos ive seen
omg gt3 music and style, i love you guys
Nice video. Nicely done and entertaining.
Interesting that this guy said the JCW not the most fun car but it is fast, yet every other review I have seen makes the point that the strength of the JCW is that it is an absolute blast to drive. Go figure!
And it was beaten by a cheaper Clio. I don't see the fun in that.
He said it's not the most fun car there? Which anyone would agree with when its against a Gt86
Did he drive the clio in race mode? Look up the nurburgring times.
Had you put the mini in sport mode the steering would have been much tighter and it would have been a lot quicker while still hugging those corners.
I loved that video, that really took me back to me GT days ☺
The theme was a lot of fun. I would love to see the results of putting the finish line at the exit of the last turn (remove that long final straight.)
Video game theme had me thinking this was a repost from 10 years ago. It's as up-to-date as "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" from the Willennium.
Did you guys manage to overheat the gearbox in the 220 Trophy on track? Be interesting to know if it stood up to a 15 min stint on track
I like the Gran Turismo Graphics that you used in the video
Good comparison test. Gt format was a novel idea too😉
loved the GT theme to the video!
I love the Clio Trophy! Brilliant car! I'm so glad I have ordered it!! :) but still a few month to wait for the delivery...
But actaully they are all very nice cars, just each on their own.
+TheBioSkunk It also seems that Renault reliability is a thing now, which is nice :)
+Kaisuke971 What do you mean? Are they reliable or unreliable?
+João Soares Renault cars are reliable these days in general. That is what he meant. but Renault Sport cars have always been reliable actually.
Loving the GT treatment to this video!
I like the editing of this video much
Did the JCW have the optional damper?
This is going to seem strange but that side interior camera view is just brilliant. Wish more videos used it rather than a close up of the driver's face, much better impression of the driving position and work involved in driving the car... Keep using it please!!!!!!!!
All the cars has the same tires?
I'd take the JCW any day.
+ChuckS117 Exactly. I recently drove the new Mazda MX-5 and it's nothing compared to the new cooper S/JCW. Especially if you're ecu tuning these cars, you can get almost 300 hp out of the JCW model.
until it breaks down..
lol and you CAN'T with a MX-5?? Your argument is ridiculous, dude. Any of these cars can be tuned. In fact, the MX-5 has a HUGE tuning community. I, too, have driven both as I recently was in the market for a fun little convertible toy (live in FL). I now own a 2016 MX-5 Club.
Michael Godsey Like you could compare an MX5 with that mini crap
I'm talking about stock ecu tuning. MX-5 doesn't even come close at all, so my comment definitely makes sense. Look, both are nice cars, but tuning wise the MX-5 doesn't even come close. (stock!)
I go for the Clio Trophy! Such a beauty and a handling king! :)
Awesome video
Fam as soon as I saw GT3 I was laughing like a kid again 🔥🔥😂
great review
That last corner in the GT86 was right before a very long straight, therefore pretty crucial to your time. If you didn't get the tail out that much you could have probably shaved a respectable amount of time off that lap. Id say at least a half a second. Not like it really affects the overall outcome though.
Loving my Clio not surprised is the fastest ! RWD still remain total fun to drive btw ! But for everyday driving the Trophy is just perfect :D
Wow nice gt3 theme I thought I had cliked the wrong thumbnail
Love the Gran Turismo 3 theme. I don't know how many hours I spent on that game!
brilliant videogame art style
glad to own both, the fastest and the most fun
Gran Turismo 3 graphics and music. Sweet!
I owned a 65 plate MX-5 from new for 2 years. Amazing car, loved driving it. Now I've got a 2011 JCW and it is just something else. If only the MX-5 was turbo from factory...
Love the gran tourismo theme :)
This would have been more interesting had you used the full lap (instead of having just part of the lap).
Why are you driving you can't hit a single apex... I'll grant you front wheel drive is sometimes easier to place but come on, you basically ruined any chance the gt86 had by overdriving it. Same with the mx5.
I love the Gran Turismo theme
i wonder how quick the GT86 would actually have been without a big sloppy oversteer on the final turn. 0.5-1 seconds quicker maybe?
It's amazing how much time something like that loses. I've often had that happen on a fast lap, but thought I was ok and then been surprised when I've compared the lap to a cleaner one.
and the wrx sti???
Clio is a great car for teens.... good engine easy to run and if your a speed maniac than you can always get an RS version.... No wonder why my team put it under second position
Cool video!
why no Fiesta ST ?
love the theme!
Wish the Miata is a bit more competitively priced. The Club and Touring trims could use a 2k price cut, base about 1k. You can't go wrong with all four cars reviewed, defends in your needs to go along fun factor. Cooper S is probably a better trim for the comparo for the price. I have a MINI S 4 dr and it's a hoot to drive. Will probably snag a used later model Abarth. Love small cars!
Toyota comes with an updated GT86 early 2016 and the bar must be, that it has to be as fast or a little faster than its main competitor which is the mazda mx-5 both with naturally aspirated engines and rear wheel drive and being basically a two seater...
Claims are that they reworked the engine to give 208hp from this version with 197hp,, slight modifications to dampers and suspension.. but hey have to maintain the wieght or make it just slightly lighter in order to be in the game....
Why no full lap, why not include the tight corners betweem start and finish too, would have been way more interesting.
you do only one lap by car?
The videos aspect ratio is 4:3 :.(
+Xenophene01 you idiot
Not everyone would know about the gaming theme.
Gran Turismo is a homage to Japan's best motoring -- where they race road cars in 5 lap races for fun! :)
Ha I love the gran turismo theme, you guys sure know what kind of people watch car vids on youtube.
Much better than the wannebe Top-Gear charade Motortrend performed with their final 3 best driver cars.
+Peter Timowreef They're not wannabe Top Gear. Just because they ended up with 3 cars to choose between?
torod213
They're totally wannebe topgear. That final piece where there were 3 cars left was taken one on one from the Top Gear format.
3 presentors, each representing a car, and then they drive around while making wise-cracks at eachother through walkie-talkies.
+Peter Timowreef Ok, so they ended up with 3 cars. And because they were so different, they need to be subjective about it, and that requires 3 opinions. Furthermore, it is very rare that the TG boys do shoots like this, maybe once a season tops. And again, the clip you are talking about was not even 7 minutes long. The rest of the video had about as much in common with Top Gear as Teen Moms of whatever. You are talking complete bullshit. Show me any other MT video and tell me they're wannabe Top Gear.
Anders Høifødt
Yes because teen moms is about cars as well..
Also, I really don't care wether or not you agree with my point that MT tries to mimick Top Gear. For me it is obvious, your opinion does not change that.
+Peter Timowreef I don't give half a shit about your opinion. Just don't walk around thinking your opinion is the right answer, because it's total bullshit. If it's true, show me any other video that proves your point, other than the 7 minutes at the end of their DCOTY 2015 video.
That huge slide at the last corner with the gt86 seems a bit unfair..
Cracking Video 👌🏻
GT3 theme is so boss.
new shocks and a supercharger on the mazda=the perfect car oh wait-the looks of the GT 86 please
I like the MX-5, but do they have a hard-top version?
+MrYoumitube you probably need to buy it separately...
Looking on the Mazda U.K. webste, both the standard model and the limited to 600 units, "Sport Recaro" model (which is £5000 extra fo not a whole lot of extra car) are available with a cloth top only, but stop top only or not, you're still getting a lot more spec options than we're getting here in Ireland (which is nothing new) .
In tbe U.K., the new MX-5 is available in six specs, SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport, Sport Nav and Sport Recaro, ranging in starting price from £18,500 - £24,300 and as this video shows up to a 160 ps (i THINK that's the exact same as BHP) engine, with the starting engine having 131 ps - we're not even being offered the higher power engine here, though at least according to the webste, that 29 ps difference doesn't make a massive difference to the cars' performance it the lower power engine being quoted as having an 8.3 second 0-62 mph and 127 mph top speed, compared to a 7.3 second 0-62 and 133 top speed for the high power engine.
We're only getting two spec options on the car here, the Roadster starting at €28,000 and the Roadster GT starting at €30,000 :_ .
A funny thing, by the end of the last model, the MX-5 was only being offered here with a folding hard top (which used start at around €32-33,000), so i'm sure a hard top will come...eventually :) .
On available specs the only other Mazda that interests me (i'm currently driving my second 6 and planning to buy a third gen soon :) ), in the U.K. the 6 is available in seven specs ranging in starting price from £19,800-24,600, the starting grade being SE, while here the cars' only available in three specs ranging in starting price from €29,000-35,600 and while the lowest spec car is available with a petrol or a diesel engine, if you want to buy either if the higher spec cars, they're only available with diesel engines :_ .
(Lastly, even if it's only available on the base model, at least Mazda Ireland are offering the 6 with a petrol engine again, near the end of the second gen 6's run here around 2012, they wers selling it with diesel engines only :_ .)
RF coming out soon.
nice ideia
RWD more fun than fwd
sport cars? you meant to say two hot hatches, a coupe, and a roadster
People say the GT86 is underpowered not because of it having just 200 bhp but for the fact that even though it has 200 bhp it is slower in the straight line than many other cars with less horses and similar or even higher weight. I found the GT86 engine quite underwhelming considering it's (relatively) substantial hp claims.
You got beaten by Alex from car throttle by 5 seconds!!!
The Fiesta ST is missing
Can someone who has owned a mini comment on how fun to drive they are? Im not really in the market for a car but im always curious what my next one will be, and i just love how cheeky the mini is :P
agreed
Mini Cooper S with 11% chain reduction.
It doesn't growl, it hasn't ben meesed with, and it is such a fun car ti drive.
Accidentally putting your foot down around a roundabout and the supercharger kicks in... you know about it! 😂
this was very cool.. Please do this again.. PS I'm 27 not 16
I thought the mx-5 had a 0-100km of 5.6-5.8 seconds
The GT3 is a nice choice, as the best GT game ever.
Looking forward to see Fiats version of the MX-5. It will get a 1.4 turbo with 180hp. Should be interesting.
+Heine Pedersen Exactly, it should best almost anything in a logical buying, with fuel consumption vs performance ratio very high while being totally fun to drive.
If you like turbo lag, Fiat reliability and a big depreciation, sure, go for it!
João Soares Except the fact that Fiat by numbers and stats is more reliable than most brands including VW group for example, turbo lag is very low, same as newest diesel engines since its the same type of turbos, max torque at 1800rpm for example, and depreciations is always big on a new car, personally I wouldn't even put 8k in a new car, rather buy a used fun car really, but that's another discussion entirely.
+Heine Pedersen The Fiat 124 and Miata probably won't be in the same price bracket, i see fiat asking 29k for the base and 35k for the Abarth version with the 4c engine. At those prices the enthusiasts will cry overpriced.
that payola from Sony must have been good
The two I'd pick out the four would be Mazda and Toyota 🇯🇵😊👍🏻
why did you guys cut off the last quarter of the track? So the "british" hatchback gets a better time than the Japanese competitors? I'm quite sure the last 2 corners whould make a difference.
+axised001 Yes, that would make an even bigger gap. Just check all the other track test results with these cars. These hot hatches are simply much quicker around any track than these "sportscars". Escpecially the Clio Trophy!
My clio 1.2 beats all these, but in truth it would be good to see how much slower something like a 1.2 is over the same course and maybe throw in a supercar too.
Is the auto JCW still a single clutch?
Yes.
the mini uses a "standard" automatic transmission, meaning a torque converter. its not an automated single or double clutch transmission.
I wish the test Minis didn't have those horrible 18" allows with the poor run flat tyres - they're notoriously poorer for lateral grip (have a read of the Pistonhead's "Fast Fleet")
I thought the mx-5 had a 0-100km of 5.6-5.8 sec
The MINI was only car not being pushed to the limits of the tires....driver was holding back IMO.
My dream car No1: Mx-5
definite like! LOL love the GT
MX-5 's A/C is on+sat nav, shut them of and save a second !
This test is super biased withe the rear wheel drive cars.
this mini is the new 2 liters?
+michele b Yes. 231 hp
+Throttle Channel 231 hp is cooper work kit? thank you
Yes. Cooper S has 141 kW/192 hp/189 bhp and it is a 2-litre engine. This John Cooper Works has the same engine, but the max power is 170 kW/231 hp/228 bhp.
