I have a JCW, and though it’s certainly flawed it definitely isn’t “warm”, it has ridiculous mid-range punch from its 2 litre engine. Get rid of the run-flats, fit a proper LCD and some better dampers and it would be much more compelling proposition.
I'm sure the auto JCW has launch control...
Also no one noticed how the mini was 0.6 seconds faster from 0-60 than what Mini claims it should be? The official time by Mini is 6.3 seconds.

JCW best by far😄 but then I would say that ( I OWN ONE ) wonderful toy, would recommend at test drive before you judge. Most fun I ever had on four wheels. That's why I bought mine:yay🤗😄😊
The MINI does have Launch Control with the Sport Auto, my SD equipped with the Sports Auto has Launch Control.

Tony James Agreed. It may be down on power against the ridiculous mega hatches these days but it ticks all the boxes in the hot hatch category and will give most hatches a good kicking on roads and track.
Tony James I think that's a mistake and it should be 6.7. Look how close the Fiesta is, and it did 6.8 so... I don't see a 1.1 sec difference by the time they hit 60 mph
Absolutely, don't know what all this warm hatch bollocks is. These are rapid cars, make no mistake.
The JWC is a great car with 228 bhp in a 3 door car which is enough power for most people. Plus it's not trying too hard looks wise.
Cooper S and JCW models do have launch control, I own both. Not sure about the standard Cooper
I drove both, JCW faster with better interior but fiesta ST200 much more fun and better on track, it's a RWD wannabe, great car, a blast to drive
The better car won and I'd honestly have a mini jcw over a fiesta st ( coming from someone who owns a fiesta eco boost ). I love my fiesta but you can't deny the character of the mini.

it's not about unfair or not ! it about the same "class" ! the mini for direct rival has the Audi S1 and for the Fiesta is the Clio Rs and the 208 GTi
its not fair at all because the mini may be weighs more but its the only disadvantage against the fiesta the fiesta on the other hand it has so many disadvantages such ass auto vs manual gearbox 2.0 liter engine vs 1.6 more power more torque and its a lot cheaper from the mini and its not in the same class love both cars though but the fiesta is the better car here

definitely an unfair race.... a 2.0 against a 1.6 ...or a 200Hp against a 238Hp... rather the mini against the Focus ST 250

I have a fiesta ST and I love its fun factor. But with extra cost of that JCW, I'd probably use that extra money for mods.
How about a fiesta st180 vs fiesta st200? That would be interesting... and there still are cars with equivalent power to race the st200... the clio and 208 gti for example so we can actually see if the shorter gear ratio and 20bhp more power did anything to this car

Auto express have a habit of comparing unevenly matched cars in group tests. Then they criticise the slower cars for not being as quick as the faster car and make them sound / look bad.

My 106gti was giving my friends brand new JCW a run for its money over 10y ago when they first came out. These new ones are a little faster but not by much. The games moved forward which is why these are regarded as warm hatches and not hot ones. 10y ago the mini JCW was one of the fastest hot hatches you could buy. Now theres loads out there which are faster.
And more expensive

Im sure the jcw has launch control doesnt it? Ive seen youtube videos jcw launch control. Even a little flag comes up on the dash in the mini stating the car is in launch control mode?

Maybe for you, I’d rather have fun in a car and it be a tad slower than a car which is a bit quicker but a boring drive.
I hate to be that guy but I've seen ST200s go way faster than that at York Raceway. My Stage 1 Fiesta ST does 0-100 in a little over 14 seconds, and 0-60 in 5.7.

when new the mini is better on every level but as a used car I don't hear the best things about them now in the American market the fiesta is much cheaper but on the inside it also feels much cheaper.
Think the power and torque stats on the fiesta are wrong. It has 215HP and 320NM. I've had both 'kind of'. Had an ST with the mountune upgrade. Now have the JCW mini with sports auto transmission. The mini is better in every way. Looks better, sounds better, better build quality outside and in, far superior options and drives better as a day to day and car. Fiesta was fun though

As denoted by the ST200 badging this new model gets a power hike, the 1.6-litre turbo unit now returning, on paper, 200bhp. Officially, the standard Fiesta ST develops 178bhp, but in reality it has always developed closer to 200bhp - albeit on overboost, which is why Ford chooses the list the lower figure.
Accordingly the ST200 can generate 215bhp on overboost (for 20 seconds in third and fourth gear), at 5700rpm. The listed torque figure is 214lb, but, again, the real peak figure is 236lb ft.
Now try to corner with the Fiesta and try to corner with the mini.
Agree Fiesta will destroy Mini in real challenge like lap on a race track. Just straight line speed is not all.
I think the JCW is plenty capable of cornering, especially since I think it has the option for a true LSD.
I think that it would be much better test if they lap both cars on a track. In that case we won't have to wonder any more ;) btw. being completely honest yes JCW is a serious contender for a Fiesta ST (in cornering and more) but you know I'm just a crazy fan of Ford ;)
JCW corners like its on rails, I know as I have one. The only thing better about the Ford is that you won't need to re-paint the steel when it is recycled into a freezer
Agree straight line speed isn't everything but I have owned many cars and never experienced what my jcw has. I understand that both have their fans and that the jcw is totally impractical as a day to day car and the price is high, especially the options list but you should really reserve judgment until you get a chance to try this thing out .if you have ever been on a days go cart racing you will probably understand what I'm trying to say .
So the more powerful and more expensive car was faster? The Fiesta ST is 21,800 USD and the Cooper S is 24,950 USD and JCW is 31,450

I think that they should have used the Fiesta ST Mountune with 215hp.
Ultimately with 228hp, the Mini would have won but not as much as this test would have suggested.
In terms of cost, the Fiesta wins hands down as the cost is much lower. But based on depreciation, although the Mini costs more, it's better value for money as it's residuals are much higher than any Fiesta.

@@L.A.T.E.84 I don’t know what your problem is. I ordered a brand new Mini JCW as a second car. My other car is a BMW 2 series Coupe. I think the quality in the interior of the Mini JCW is very nice for a small hatch

so a 2.0 with 230hp wins against a 1.6 with 200hp...Also the pricing on the JCW is very wrong, that was the newprice of the standard cooper S, the JCW version was 29,345£ back in 2017

Feels and sounds faster than it actually is lol. You sould use a performance box, racing two cars without real data or 1/4 mile times is worthless...
it would be good to see these luke warm hatches up against the latest hot/super hatches, as I know the latter are faster by more than a few seconds but be good to see it in distance which we can all relate too.

They say the st is the bench mark for a super mini,but i really don't like it at all,mainly down to the looks.If you've got a hot hatch it needs to shout about it to some degree(dosen't need to be over the top) but the fiesta looks are just so bland and uninspiring
I have the ST200 and I would choose these over the mini any day. It maybe "quicker" but you can't be a ST!.
Maybe you should do a comparison between a focus RS and a fiesta 1.0L for a comparison video next time.

These drag races are fun to watch! Fiesta's 0-100mph time is a bit of a letdown: 200hp and it only managed just under 18 secs.
I have an ST200 but its tuned to 320BHP wonder how that would go down in a race.

£22k Fiesta Vs. £30k Mini with an auto box...Shouldn't you have tried a very basic spec Cooper S or even a Basic Cooper with chilli pack for a fair fight???
Or going the other way, wouldn't a Focus ST or even a Focus RS be more likely cross shopped against a top of the range mini in the same price bracket?
I really think you price should be a consideration in some of these tests you are doing to level the field.

+Supcharged that as that mini jcw is as tested. The ford st200 is basically a standard fiesta st with all the option ticked and special paint and wheels. The only option is a spare tyre.
You're right of course. The options on the Mini add weight and slow it down. The cheaper base model (which still has far higher spec than the Fiesta and isn't just a Peugeot in a frock) would beat it by even more.
Basted on cost should they have chosen the Focus ST? Or are Mini's that cheap in Europe?
