    There’s a happy medium- I was raised in a house no sugar, no soda, no candy etc and being told “a moment on your lips a lifetime on your hips” for as long as I can remember and ended up with a lifelong struggle with eating disorders and body issues.

      Oh yeah that phrase was spouted constantly in my house growing up! Growing up with a diet so tied to morality (good food/bad food, and having to optimize everything all the time) really messed up my relationship with food.

    • @MB-fk5mg
      @MB-fk5mg 9 місяців тому +67

      No sugar, soda or candy is good. Just because those things exist, doesn't mean we need to have them. However, connecting it to weight gain and appearance is the problematic part. You can avoid junk in your child's diet without making it a big deal, while teaching them about good health. "Everything in moderation" is a myth and moderation has even led to addiction for many.
      My mother was the opposite of how you were raised. She was clueless about nutrition and would give us junk and processed foods constantly. I didn't know what many fruits and vegetables even looked like or tasted like. We are paying for it now. I had/have to work extremely hard to be a normal weight.
      Best wishes to you in your struggle and I'm sorry it happened that way for you.

      Child abuse?! Come on.. that's reaching. You don't know her children's specific situations. I have 6 kids, 5 of which eat normal meals I prepare of have brought in. One is special needs and will not eat virtually anything. Not feeding her children is child abuse. What she chooses to feed them is ultimately parental choice and bc we dont know her specific situations calling it child abuse is ridiculous.

      What enrages me is when people would boast about their diet and weight loss routine, talk about going to the gym ... Yet don't ever put their foot down on their kid's diet and the child is clearly overweight and on the verge of being obese...

      @SS24ist I genuinely also think it's harder to refrain from than drug use. Don't get me wrong, sugar is not as addictive as some drugs and doesn't do as much damage - but in terms of sobriety? Everyday is a struggle for addicts, everyday they have to make the decision not to use.
      Sugar/food addiction? You have to eat! There are so many temptations and it's so easy to fall into lazy eating. Life gets busy, sometimes we need to take shortcuts in order to feed ourselves.
      Cooking is a lot of effort. Cooking from scratch is even more effort. My mom decided to make homemade Shepards pie for the two of us... it took her hours and it didn't taste as good as the store bought boxed kind, due to missing an ingredient. Plus, we had too many leftovers!

    Growing up my family had a ritual I think was really beneficial. We grocery shopped on average every other week. You are allowed to pick out 1 "kind" of treat from roughly 3 categories: •chips/crackers •cereal/bars/toastables •confections/candy. You didn't get the "family size", you got the regular bag/box. That was your junk (I usually got cheetos, devil dogs and a block of Monterey Jack cheese😂). You were allowed to have them whenever you wanted, as much as you wanted, any time of day, but when you ran out, you were out for up to 2 weeks. We never skipped groceries because "we still had food" so sometimes you ended up with more junk bc we were allowed to replenish even if we still had some at home; we skipped for budget reasons, So we weren't incentivized to eat everything to justify shopping - Instead we had good reason to try and stretch out how long we could have our snacks around. This made the junk food special but not craved, encouraged pouring small bowls of cereal/chips instead of eating out of the bag, and choosing/waiting for actual meals when hungry instead of eating away the snacks too soon. We also got to choose small treats for movies, weren't forever denied fast food, and were allowed enjoy anything offered at special events. We rarely went to restaurants and never got appetizers but I was allowed anything I wanted on the menu, it just had to be 1 thing - I would order an appetizer as my meal because I thought appetizers were just smaller regular meals.
    So yeah, we didn't have restriction or deprivation, there was rarely "you can't have that, it's not healthy", we just had controlled portions that I've since learned others consider really small. But it really worked. This left MOST of our consumption to the regular daily meals - which weren't always the healthiest but for the time, it did reflect the food pyramid and we always tried to have greens and proteins on every plate. We also always bought a little fresh fruit. I remember on vacation we'd get chewy chocolate chip cookies and all year I'd refrain from eating them except at the beach so they would always be a beach treat.
    I feel lucky because I think I was (accidentally) raised right with portion control. To this day I still prefer to have "a little at a time".

    • @christiana5757
      @christiana5757 2 місяці тому +1

      We had a similar-but-different upbringing. We didn't have restrictions but my mom was a nurse and made us homecooked, mostly-healthy food 80% of the time for dinner. A meat, a starch and always 3 steamed veggies. Every night. We were allowed fast food as a treat, we were allowed some snack foods that weren't healthy but usually just the plain granola bars. We ate all our Halloween candy :D
      BUT THE PORTIONS. We were chubby kids because we just ate and ate and had seconds and thirds if it was really good.
      So while my taste buds are excellent and I was never sick as a kid (nor my brother), we still both struggle with our weight because we grew up eating adult-sized portions as kids.
      It's such an untalked-about aspect of learning how to have a healthy relationship with food.

      Right, my mom was that parent. I grew up eating things like Totinos party pizzas, ramen noodles, sugary cereals, snack cakes, fried chicken and fast food pretty much every day of the week. I was CONSTANTLY sick. I had a fast metabolism so that’s the only reason I never gained weight but by the time I hit my teens I had IBS and other medical issues brought on by awful diet.
      I missed so much school growing up and my mom truly didn’t understand why. It got so bad to a point where I was waking up and vomiting about once a week with stomach pains so bad I could hardly walk.
      One of my favorite things about being an adult is that I’m finally able to get all the fresh foods I would always ask my mom for growing up, but she refused to get it for me because according to her it was a waste of money because I was “the only one who would eat that crap” and because they considered fruits and veggies to be rabbit food. Sadly my siblings think this way now as well and are battling with their weight and health issues because of it. My sister will over dramatically gag and dry heave if I serve salad or desserts with real fruit when she comes over.

    Serving sausage in boiling water is what my traditional German Austrian mom did. She had the pot of boiled water with the sausage in it, and you would pull the sausages out of the water as you ate them because it would keep them very hot until they were eaten. @@emilyd.6371I know it’s way easier these days to find this stuff, and cheaper relatively than it used to be. It’s also more shelf stable, and maybe some moms didn’t learn how to feed a family because of how they were raised (meaning larger meal preps, budgeting and reading a recipe for common items). The thing is though, it’s a choice. You have a choice to change your lifestyle. I’m not saying it’s an easy one but a choice nonetheless.

It takes energy and time and years of knowledge and slow transition to more fruits and vegetables and it’s not like she’s never feeding them any protein. Those burger patties and chicken nuggets and eggs are all protein. We really need to not base our opinions of people around their 30 seconds videos and assume we know anything. It’s a long process. And this woman has 3 kids all young. I know post partum depression can be so real and go for so long and you are just trying to survive…. You do your best. @kristin87425 thats not an excuse. You want shelf stable? Frozen bulk meat, rice, potatoes, beans, lentils, all sorts of canned goods. You can even grow your own food in pots. Buying boxed processed stuff isn't the cheap option anymore. What it is is laziness and lack of motivation. I feel like a crap parent when I give my toddler a processed meal even a couple times a week or let her snack on packaged stuff twice a day. When you have kids you are 100% responsible for ensuring their wellbeing. Guys, unfortunately this is absolutely a thing. I'm 31 years old and now that I have children of my own I've worked hard to learn about healthy eating and they rarely have unhealthy foods. But when I was young I was raised on processed everything, cue to being an adult pre children and all I ate was "food" from a gas station or fast food place. It got so bad at one point that I was eating a cosmic brownie or some sort of candy and drinking just energy drinks everyday. I weighed maybe 110. Which isn't a healthy weight for me. And I can 100% honestly tell you that from the time I was maybe 17 to 25 yrs old, if I went to a friend's and had home cooked food or decided to rarely switch things up and get a salad or fruit, or meat that wasn't from a fast food place, it absolutely made me feel like garbage. I would get really painful gas pains and had bathroom issues, to say it politely. Not often but a few times I had even thrown up bc my stomach was so upset. It finally got to the point where I just stopped eating healthy ever bc it just wasn't worth it. When I finally got it together when I became pregnant, I had to start out with a very bland, simple, but not heavily processed diet. It took maybe a month to be able to eat like a normal person without any negative effects. Sorry for the novel. Just had to share my experience so that people can know how badly things can get.

We played too hard outside before lunch so applesauce, crackers, and juice for lunch while they try and nod off . Then many a night we have good old fashioned sandwiches for dinner because we barely survived the day, are out of leftovers, and the last thing we want to do is dishes!
      I'm lucky that most of my kids will eat literally anything so we have the fun of being able to add variety to our meals which allow for creativity with ingredients and figuring out alternatives to make the meals a little cheaper.

      That's really exaggerating. Fruit and veggies can't just be washed and tossed on a plate for a small child. They need to be peeled/cored/seeded and/or cut as well (depending on the fruit) and even having fresh fruit on hand isn't as easy. I'm not saying the effort isn't worthwhile, I luckily was not fed donuts nor was my child. But you're not really being realistic. Healthier options are generally going to take more time than Hostess options and be less accessible if you can't get to the store more than weekly. (For instance, I live in the boonies, nobody will deliver groceries out here, the closest Walmart is 35+ min away, so I would need frozen or shelf-stable options requiring preparations if I had a bunch of little kids to raise.)

      @LunarEleven 10 місяців тому +3

      @@FrenkTheJoyI totally agree with what you're saying but if your strawberries go bad in a day I would highly suggest refrigerating them cuz they shouldn't! Those packages of donuts have a surprisingly poor shelf life, convenience stores throw them out all the time. The strawberries should last just as long before they even get shriveled a bit (and are still good, can throw in a smoothie as long as they don't mold.)

The difference is one was in a nice car and fairly thin while feeding her kids a dozen Krispy Kremes, the other spent hours making sugary foods in her aesthetically pleasing kitchen in her multimillionaire home.
    She was also a thin mom and there was not one kid in sight as she prepared this unhealthy meal for hours on end. She obviously has the luxury of handing her kids off to someone else to do what she likes, yet she only received praise for being a beautiful mom in a beautifully expensive kitchen even when feeding her kids junk. Yes! Brown and serve need a little water but you have to be patient and brown them well after water evaporates. I think of it kind of like beer brats where you boil in beer and then sear on a pan after. It cooks the inside of the brat, and with brown and serve which you cook from frozen it warms the inside.

      Yup. It’s a really toxic mindset to have that “mamas know best” so nobody can say anything. If that was the case, things like CPS wouldn’t exist. She’s setting her kid up for a lifetime of health issues if this is the garbage her kid is eating regularly at such a young age. The lady doesn’t even take the time to sit the baby down at the table to feed her. She just sets her plate on the floor like she’s feeding a dog and giving her kid finger foods so she won’t need help eating. She should have her kids taken away, tbh. If you can’t be bothered to feed your kids properly or even so much as sit with them, you shouldn’t have kids.

So giving her tips on how to do it better in a nice way goes a longer way than telling her that her children should be taken away because of the food she serves (some comments actually suggest that). The tone makes the music.

    I mean, there is a living breathing child actively being given an addiction and eating disorder that won't just affect their health, it will color their entire life, every meal, every drink, how they see themselves, how they are treated and could potentially limit their options in life just from physical limitations.
    We would judge a mother starving her children and being hyper restrictive. I don't understand the concept of the opposite extreme being seen as "she's just doing her best with what she has." She's literally not. I've been low income, junk food is crazy expensive. It's just as easy to make some toast and an egg or oatmeal as it is to cut up doughnuts.
    We need to bring stigma back into our culture. We've destigmatized society to the point abuse is being excused and ignored. We can't normalize nutritional abuse in children. It ruins lives.

      @fernthegreenfairy It’s good to find a starting point, too. Maybe a UA-camr that teaches fairly simple healthy meals you can make if you’re trying to go from scratch/learn to cook a bit more. Unprocessed foods at the grocery store aren’t too hard to find; like the other commenter said, just try to stay out of the middle aisles (except I go there for things like soy sauce or other simple seasonings I need). It’s good not to overwhelm yourself at the beginning otherwise you may give up. Just try to read labels on boxed/canned things you buy and stick with ingredients that you can actually understand what they are, for the most part. That will help a huge chunk.
      It’s not as difficult to make some of your favourites as you might think, either. If you find a good quality frozen burger (without a bunch of junk in it/it tastes good), then it’s fairly simple to add things like that as occasional treats.
      As for learning to eat more healthy/delicious options… I prefer to cook a more Asian-based diet (mostly Thai these days, though it’s also included Japanese and Korean). There are some pretty simple and very delicious recipes that just naturally incorporate real ingredients and lots of vegetables. I find their meals to be generally quite well balanced without having to try to figure out “what’s my protein going to be? How do I get vegetables in here?” etc. North American cooking is honestly pretty hard for me to eat healthy AND enjoy (the flavours just don’t really jive with me…)
      I don’t know if this is what you were asking. Sorry for the wall of text if it wasn’t. But just in case, as a suggestion, I would recommend trying out Pad Woon Sen, specifically the recipe from Hot Thai Kitchen (AKA Pailin’s Kitchen) as an example for how delicious/healthy Asian food can be. It’s an almost entirely vegetable based stir fry with a super killer sauce that works well with basically anything, and it takes a very small time to prepare and uses mostly “regular” ingredients you may already have on hand if you’re cooking your own food, plus a couple you may need to go to an Asian grocery store for (tends to be cheaper where I live, anyway, so I love shopping there). But these ingredients should be fairly simple to get (she has a couple of videos of this recipe, but I’m specifically referring to the one she made during the lockdown, which she mentions basically at the beginning of the video, so it should be easy enough to find. It’s a very quick, cheap, and tasty stir fry).
      While you’re at the Asian market if you do go, might I suggest also looking at her recipe for chicken wing Tom Yum because… man, oh man… that’s some delicious stuff right there (and you don’t have to add chilies if you can’t have spice. Just leave them out. It still tastes fantastic, and is a recipe where you basically put in minimal effort for maximum deliciousness).
      Hope this helps and wasn’t overwhelming/a bunch of nonsense to you. lol

I was surprised to see people say they would only give their kids two marshmallows…..my grandmother had an entire drawer in her fridge with candy bars that I would take. And all of my meals were box meals or fast food. My grandma would also regularly have 3-4 bags of opened potato chips. It’s wild to me to see how other people have healthy relationships with food 😂 I would wake up every day sooo dehydrated because I HATED water and would drink anything but until it was hard to talk. I still get cracked lips from not drinking water because “it tastes bad” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ pleaaaaase before you have kids, watch how other countries treat their children like little adults (Japan is my favorite with how their schools teach them to prepare the lunches, their lunches are so diverse and healthy), especially if you feel like it’s impossible to start your kids eating healthy things. It’s only hard if you start giving the wrong things first 😭 I hate that I still prefer lunchables and fake cheese over real cheese and natural ingredients. All I crave all the time is McDonald’s, Panda Express, and I don’t want to be this way 🫥
