- Would you like fries with that?? Firewood is also an item that has a number of add-on sales opportunities. Fire starters, racks, stacking, and certainly kindling. Today I show how I make kindling and how I package it. The way you package your products that can increase your asking price but also can increase brand awareness and return business.
The burlap bag I sell is 14" x 26" and you can find a good price by shopping around. I have had very good luck with Uline. Here are the bags I purchased.

I don’t know how i found your channel. I don’t split wood, I don’t burn wood, and I don’t live in Ohio. I can’t stop watching. Simple business lessons and passion. Keep up the good work.
I'm the same, in fact, I live in a country (Venezuela) where we doesn't even use firewood, but I enjoy every video: full of humbleness, honesty, wisdom an lots of relaxing and fun.
On the other hand, you should consider using some sort of tonge/big tweezzers (don't know the exact term, just imaging the function) since your fingers are going back and forth too close to that sharp cutting edge.
A suggestion for filling your kindling bags, get a piece of PVC pipe close to the diameter of your bags and cut it slightly longer so it is easily removed, saves you rolling your other one each time. 👍
The fun of cutting your own trees: each comes pre-packaged with it's own kindling! I just go to where maintenance hauls all the tree trimmings and blow downs with my folding saw ,a pair of loppers, and some 5 gallon buckets. All the tinder and kindling I need- for free! Just takes a bit of effort. Often, a lot of it is dead and dry already- so I can use it right away.
I, too, like to set aside nice strait pieces of maple to split for kindling. Spruce works great, too. Just because sometimes the supply of dead, dry branches is low- and I want a fire. They pop right apart with little effort, and burn really hot- perfect for lighting not-quite seasoned campfire wood, lol.

im new to wood since I have a fireplace for 2 years, I buy face cords then chop it up in smaller pieces with my axe (handle already cracked after a week) sometimes I get scammed on wood in regard to quality. I wish I had a guy like u in Michigan, great channel I found you from Adam's channel hometown
Hey I like the channel. About the painting of the bag with boards maybe try making that into a frame and mount the stencil to the frame. Then it would be I one move motion. Have a get day and I look forward to seeing your videos

Thanks! that sled was laying around my barn for years and it just clicked. It is a great tool bc it rolls up by itself and stores nicely when not in use.
Great advice again. Far productive than cutting down trees buying a Skidsteer and a processor. Buy the wood, bundle it and sell it.

Great video once again. I love the added value and plastic sled trick. Those were the fastest thing on the hills until the jet sled for ice fishing came out. Those things are stupid fast!! I also like the technique on making flat sheets of wood on the Supersplit to stack. Makes quick work.

This reminds me to start busting up my pine for splits. I used to use fat wood but after seeing the greasy smoke it makes i have since moved away from it... thanks for another fun video.

I split mine the same way but use red cedar, I had the local sheet metal shop make me a tube that fits in my bags. We think alike 👍👍.

You could sale kindling or camp fire wood in rough cut board milk crates...it would look great for just sitting near a fireplace... don't even need to have fires in a fireplace but just having something that has a good look to it brings character to the house.
I like that idea. Maybe a monogrammed board on the front of it. I will add that to my list of things to look at. Joe
@@ohiowoodburner awesome...I was looking at Uline, I believe that's what it's called, packaging products and there's burlap wrapping material that would be much cheaper than using a bag for fire wood and more eco friendly with an old world classic feel to it ...if I was in the firewood buissness I would try that...the appearance would be better than plastic and it's something like .20 cents per yards worth of material...while firewood bags go for around .50 cents and up...

Nicely done Joe. I use maple branches cut at 14" on my chop saw then split by hand, which is very medicinal to me. I stack them in copy paper cases that I have accumulated over the years. Mostly for my own use but I sell them at times at church fairs and it is very well received.
That sounds like a nice process. I really think making firewood is its own form of therapy. Joe
Great Ideas, I spent 25+ yrs in retail so I know what you're talking about when you say Up-selling. I may have to 'Borrow (aka steal)' some of your ideas here when and if I can start a business selling firewood.
IMO the 3 most important things with a firewood business is Sales, sales, sales! Joe

Every load I send out gets a little cedar. At least here in the NW cedar dries out really fast and splits does witha hatchet super easy..

Back in the day when I was selling 80 to 100 cords a year. I would give free kindling and 10x10 tarp with every cord purchase. Have a good one buddy and take care.. be safe out there..
I used onion sacks. [New] They had a white square on them. Stamped it with rubber address stamper...

I have put in action a business plan to work my way into the fire wood business. I have an limitless supply of flats, cut those to kindling sell that and buy a splitter. Then sell fire wood, also buy firewood from a BIG cutter and start a delivery/stacking service. Thanks Joe

Look into a Eastonmade Axis to make the kindling a heck of a lot faster and many other uses as well.

probably a nice machine, but you'd need to sell A LOT of kindling to justify it if that's the only thing you'd do with it!

I have seen the Axis at work and I think it looks great. Maybe some day. Where I would use that the most would be if I took tree service wood.

Great video Joe. I really enjoy these videos. You always have unique outlooks on these added steps such as kindling. I Normally include a small bundle of kindling within a firewood bundle and charge a bit more. How much do charge for the bundle bag? Have a good one Joe!
My kindling is purely add on sales. Not every delivery wants a bag but it is a good way to add $10- $12 to an order. Joe
My processor adds kindling to the product going in my truck so I was looking at giving a branded bag with the idea being that you have about a 50lb sack worth of kindling. It would be my first effort to do any branding. I really like that burlap sac stencil. Doing something like that would fit my brand identity
It was very easy for me to do. Get some stencils, masking tape, etc ... spray paint is cheap! Joe
Good video ! Get somebody to plasma cut a 1/8” steel plate ( or better yet aluminum ) for your company stencil ! they can do some really cool designs in steel these days ( freebee tip from ‘Woody’s Firewood’ ) ....Gary, sawmillin’ on Michigan’s east side

How many others do the top down fire starting process? One of the best smoke free ways to start a fire in a wood stove.

Joe good your always thinking about making extra $$$ in your back pocket . Some time the little things in life move faster them the big stuff in firewood business joe . Think safety and alway put safety first . After a hard in the wood yard , put your feet up and have a rooster foot on beaver ice and listen to beautiful Newfoundland tunes . 2 tips, you seem to do lots of unnecessary handling, make a frame for the spray paint timber,,, That way you handle it twice, once on and once off, instead of the 6 times you are handling the 3 bits of timber. It adds up over 100 bags or say 1000 bags for example,,,, super splitter can have a kindling splitter knife made up and fitted over the single split knife, the hydraulik power is has enough oompff for it
Ask your restaurants if you can place your business cards in the waiting area for customers to pick up. “Commissioned firewood supplier of Logan’s Roadhouse”
I put all of that on FB. Right now I am trying to slow down my residential business until I am comfortable with my seasoned supply. Joe
As usual, great video! Thanks for all the useful information. I would recommend some advice that might help you speed up a little though. Firstly, does your machine require you to activate the ram rod after each time you use the saw? If not I would recommend on that smaller stuff just let like 3 or 4 chunks pile up and then push them through. Secondly, have you ever thought of a way to make a jig for your super splitter to make the smaller pieces instead of your current method. I'm sure a jig would say you tons of time, definitely once you go to splitting a bunch of kindling and you wouldn't have to worry about those thumbs. That seriously scared me seeing you do it that way, it seems as if you know what you're doing, but better be safe than sorry. I work at a sawmill and I know know how easy it is for an accident to happen, like a limb gets caught on your glove and tries to take you in the machine. Anyways that's just some ideas I have that might help you increase production and be more safe. Keep the videos coming!!! I absolutely love them!!! And if you want I think I've already thought of a kindling jig for you super splitter that should work🙂, free of charge 😉
I have tried a jig before and it didn't work quite the way I thought it would. I like to be able to find the sweet spot for each slice instead of the jig determining it. I kept messing up my stacks and it would get wood caught between the wedge and the jig. Thanks for the ideas. I am always looking to be more efficient and safe! Joe
We have woods full of invasive amur honeysuckle. Been thinking about cutting it up and sell as kindling. It burns really good and want to rid our woods of it.
Joe, have you considered making a frame, like the t shirt guys have for silk screening? Not having to stack and remove the ballast pieces.
For your bags if you go to FM Expressions, you can get iron on transfers for 15 cents each after a set up fee ......you can do your logo and all too. Find a cheap heat press and you can make a new bag every 10 seconds

@@ohiowoodburner I've used their stuff a lot, it's good quality and easy to press. You can get a sampler pack of their stuff for free I believe if you want to try their stuff on a bag to make sure it'll work for ya, lot easier, faster too.
Kindling looks prime and those bags do too! My suggestion would be to screw the 3 sticks together and then staple the stencil onto it :)
Do customers return the bags?
I had thought of making a jig/brace for the bags but It would be something else to be in my way. lol. The sticks are easy to use and are just the right weight to no squish the stencil and make the letters pucker. Joe
Great video. Saw a comment about customers returning bags. Maybe a good gimmick, offer a discount(roughly the cost of the bag) for next purchase with return of the bag (in good condition)
1) encourages repeat business(everyone wants a discount)
2) plays to the recycle crowd
3) saves labor/cost in making new bags
You obviously have this business squared away, but that was my initial thought when watching you make your bags.
Morning Joe, those stenciled bags look great, very high end. Do you find people generally return the bags when they get their next order? How do you price your kindling? I would assume double the cost of a standard bundle?
Hi Jason. I have had a few customers give me the bag back as an exchange but that is done by their own... The bags are sold with the kindling IMO. I have seen some bags folded up in garages. I have seen one customer repurpose it for holding other items.
@@ohiowoodburner even better if they repurpose, more opportunity for more eyes to see and ask "what's OWB".
So why didn’t you split them in half initially? The very first thing you did with the whole rounds to make the actual kindling was split them in half... couldn’t you skip that step when cutting to 10”?
When I watched the video back the first few I did were not done the way I usually do them. It takes me a while to get back into the swing of things. lol. If you look at the later ones I split in half, lay one side on the table, layer the other side, THEN flip it over and lay it down. This allows the top of the other half to go back onto the stack as it came off. Not sure if I'm making sense. LOL. Joe
Hi Joe Have you tried a small paint roller it may save a bit of time
join those sticks together to make a frame..........a few minutes will save much time over the years.
If you can find a way to lay the bag flat while you're filling it, gravity will work for you allowing the sticks to lay flay and not interfere with loading. Just a thought.

With the cost of your bag including the sewing- the paint - the wood- I am curious as what is the cost to the client. I am in Canada and I sell them by the box.(banana box)
I charge $12 for the kindling. It is a nice upsell. The bags cost me about $0.80 each. Paint was $1 for the can at a discount store! lol. Joe

Have your stencill plasma cut out of 2 or 3mm steel. No messing around with weights.

I love the kindling bags! (And the filling method) are you selling it by a certain volume in the bag or just “a bag full?”
The bag is 24" tall. I put two layers of 10" kindling in them. It makes a full bag with a little flap at the top. I have a smaller bag I use for "complementary" kindling.
