Have a late rifle tag this year for 8. Was just scouting it yesterday (6/5/24). Forest Route 4 is horrible lol

I’m definitely interested in a guided or unguided elk hunt.

Really appreciate the information and time putting this together! Hunted this a few years ago late season rifle. My issues with 8 and some of the other units as a nonresident is road access. I am by the book, especially coming from out of state. There are road management plans and maps in place. Would be a great hunt if these were followed with lots of areas to walk in to. I lost like 3 mornings hunting out of my 6 walking into areas that should be “closed” only to have residents driving in right over me. One guys asked me how I was doing one day and I away really not well. He asked why and explained it to him. He laughed and said nobody follows that around there and kept going. Had this to some extent in 5A this year with my daughter but not as bad as unit 8. Really wish this would get cleaned up. Did find a big 350 bill that year at 80 yards but was hunting one of the low pressure areas nobody would bother walking through. That’s a different story all together.

Yeah it can be 7 days of war-zone unethical hunting and 90% of the guys and gals hunting do it right but that 10% of wild cards go places and shoot at stuff that causes problems for the rest of us…hopefully you tagged that big bull!

Hey Tim thanks for the info. I drew a late rifle tag in 8. Would you advise bringing an AtV to get around the roads?

Yes definitely! An atv or a truck designed for 2-track rocky roads…a lot of roads in unit 8 are not an option in a full size stock truck.

    Tim,
I would like to ask about the weather conditions on the late rifle hunts in units like 5B, 6a, 7w and 8. I have a friend that lives in unit 34a and he tells me not to apply for late rifle because the conditions are beyond miserable (snow and cold) in some years. Is there a lot of truth to that? He tells me to just apply for early archery due to nice weather.
Thanks for taking time to answer.

Yeah great question I’ve touched on that in previous years and your friend has a good point. It’s almost every elk unit in the late rifle hunt if weather gets bad no unit is safe…they’ve had to shut down I-40 and units were basically all shut down to hunt at that point. In recent years a little snow but nothing major…why I like hunting later even with inclement weather potential is for meat care…the later hunts including late archery give you the opportunity to kill a bull in somewhere totally nasty and as long as you get the meat quartered and hung up you are safe and don’t have to kill yourself trying to get it out…as a solo hunter or DIY that’s a big benefit. Also draw odds are better for late hunts but the early archery elk hunting in AZ is world class!
