- University of Virginia vs Soviet Union basketball game played on November 17, 1982 at the Richmond Coliseum. UVa won the game 94-87 in 2 OT.
Virginia had 3 time Player of the Year Ralph Sampson and future Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. The Soviet Union was led by 17 year old Arvidas Sabonis.

@@BAYAREA-kd1ig after injuries he had in both legs acl, most players retire or maybe play few years. Sabonis played until 40 even after these injuries, won multiple titles with national team and clubs, even debuted in nba at 35 yo and had decent career, at 40 years old he came back to his hometown first club zalgiris, and won mvp of euroleague... its hard to explain his fighting spirit and basketball iq to people who dont know much about him.
@@NostalgicMem0ries I just remember him in the 1986 Goodwill Games as a 10 year old kid thinking his name was awesome to say SuhBonus. Just remember he was a force then.

Commentators kept saying how the soviets must be tired. It was their National Team against US college team, playing under their international rules which is a whole different ballgame from the one the Virginia team was used to.
Soviet when came in the Usa back in the day used to play 12-14games in 20 days before ncaa season started with diffrent college teams. Thats why commentators repeating that
If the Soviets had brought their A team to this, they would have rolled Virginia by 20

Sampson was such as stunning athlete. The way he ran, jumped, and even just the way he squared up. Not like a 7'4" guy at all.

Tkachenko es moreno, solía llevar el pelo largo y lacio, y casi siempre con bigotazo. Belosteny era rubio, pelo corto, y nunca con bigote.
PD: Hay un partido entre la selección USA del 84, y una selección de los mejores jugadores europeos, en el que Tkachenko es titular y en apenas un minuto ya lleva 4 puntos, 4 rebotes y un tapón. Lo puedes encontrar en youtube, es una buena muestra de lo que era el gran Vladimir dentro de una zona.

Nope, Biriukov and Tikhonenko were not even 20 at the time. Sabas was 18. Belostenny was 24 or so, Valters was 26, Chomicius 23.
