I like that players can enter the NBA early and make their money, but I miss college basketball the way it was. I dont even watch it anymore. I miss the NBA the way IT was, ...still watch though
. Sadly, I no longer watch either......too many talented players leaving college after playing only one, maybe two (mostly) meaningless NCAA regular seasons, and too many overpaid players in the NBA not playing hard, and not playing EVERY (or, at the very least, MOST) game(s) during the regular season, all in the name of "load management" (i.e., "resting up" a bunch of pampered 20 and 30 year olds in the best shape of their lives !!), in hopes of a playoff appearance that they then never end up making..... .

Dean Smith had been 0-6 in final four games prior to this losing the 1968,1977,1981 finals He often said however, that his 1977 team was in his opinion his best, but, they choked away the tittle to Marquette when Smith went into his four corner stall offense and blew a lead and the game which was Al Maguire's final game.

Patrick Ewing versus Sam Perkins. A relatively unknown Jordan. The tough tough Hoyas versus the finesse Tar Heels. Wish Patrick and Sleepy had won.
Its amazing how patient the players were back then when they ran their offense than now. And you can tell that evolution took over throughout the years by the size the players are now compared to then.
Credits to Jordan he stole the ball, his lay-up and jump shoot made them win. So ever since he’s a game winner a One of A Kind basketball player a Legend and the only 🐐
Jack ur right, I hope any NBA team should draft the #23 guy from Carolina, this freshman guy has the nerves of steel to take the last 17 secs of the game. 💪
I remember the year before they put in a shot clock, there was a big televised game (I think ACC) where a team played catch between two players for 5 plus minutes, then began their offense with about 30 seconds left in the game. I've always thought that that game was the reason for the clock.
@@uncletony6210 the ACC itself experimented with not only the shot clock, but also the three point line the year after Carolina won it all! 1982-83! And with Wittenberg and Gannon, NC State used the 3-pointer ad nauseum throughout that regular season! I believe that although they didn't have that available in March, the fact they had it benefited them and served them well during the NCAA's! Houston, while not only missing their free throws, couldn't account for NC State's perimeter game down the stretch of that national championship game!
I’ve noticed in watching these classic games from the 80’s how many great college players there were in that era from New York. Every team regardless of where they’re located seemed to have at least one or two kids from NY. In this game there was Jimmy Black (Bronx) , Matt Doherty ( Nassau), Sam Perkins ( Brooklyn then Latham) ,Freddy Brown (Bronx), and Chris Brust (Nassau).
Packer’s last comment about Jordan was that he looked “a little shaky,” and the next time he touched the ball he laid it high off the glass to extend the lead to 3. Looked pretty shaky…
Every single year after I got out of jail in 2019 I watched.NCAA regular season and the the road too the final four I saw every week some excellent played games bye both teams no real blowout really down too the wire games!!!!!!! Classic old regular and tourny games for all years if you have the old films thank u
Fred Brown’s disoriented pass to Worthy was crazy. 1:19:18 Notice MJ ran the middle lane hoping for Worthy to dish the rock to him for a game-finishing dunk. That would’ve been epic.
First national championship game I watched from beginning to end. It was fascinating to be a kid in a house full of people from D.C. and the other half from North Carolina.
@@cardphins68 I had the exact same feeling. It really was great that it ended on high note for him two years later. James Worthy was playing on another level!
First I watched from start to finish as well! I was 10 and in fourth grade at the time! That was my first year as a now lifelong Duke fan but that championship game was and still is, to me personally, the most competitive back and forth final I've ever watched
The '82 final in my opinion the teams we're more evenly matched! In '93 Michigan should have easily won! They we're the best team in the country and had they played to the capability they had played with in the weeks leading up to the final in that championship game they'd have run Carolina out of the Superdome by at least 10-15 points! They didn't play to that potential and let the Tar Holes off the hook! Donald Williams kept Carolina in it long enough but it should never have gone to the wire! I've always continued with that thought Michigan had the better team but they didn't rise to the level they had shown getting to the FF and against Kentucky in the semis
When James Worthy was drafted by the Lakers (four months later) he picked jersey #42 because jersey #52 was already taken by veteran small forward Jamaal Wilkes.
Incredible how different the game was. No 3 line, paint is clogged, super in-your-face defense, long shot clock. I would say most of the old rules made for a better game, besides the long shot clock.
Definitely not, no 3 point line made for an absolute stalemate type offense. Your exact point, paint is clogged, is what would always be a failure about these eras. There is a reason the NBA and basketball viewing in general was at an all time low in this era. The addition of the 3 point line saved basketball
@@turkey4957 Yeah right. "The 3 point line saved basketball" just like the DH saved baseball-for dilettantes who needed a gimmick to hold their interest.
Say what you want about Jordan's big shot, but if Chris Brust doesn't make that one free throw in the first half, the Heels don't win. Retire his jersey!!!
What a game that was! A much anticipated match up, with both squad dripping with talent. This is one game most wont forget. A good number of the Carolina players ended up going to the Lakers, with the greatest player becoming that tongue wagging Bull.
John Thompson calling his last timeout after the Fred Brown turnover still baffles me 40 years later. Made absolutely no sense. Down 1, unless Worthy hits both, FTs, you have a chance to call TO and at least throw one down the court and hope for a miracle.
At 32:40, Billy Packer found a nice way to mention that Ewing has noticeably small hands for someone around 6'10". Moses Malone also had small hands for someone around 6'10".
What I’m catching is the guards have sick handles. Look at the double behind the back by Georgetown guard, even buss Peterson by unc 😂 the game was so fundamentally played. Only dribble when necessary.
Basketball has changed so much defensively and offensively. Players just didn't shoot from the perimeter very much. Guys just get left open and nobody takes a shot.
I remember going to school the next day crying and hating Michael Jordan because Georgetown lost. Who knew I would be watching a game with 3 Basketball HOF and The GOAT
Who scored the last three field goals for Carolina? And how about that sudden drive to the hoop by Jordan after Carolina passed for nearly two minutes starting around the five minutes remaining mark?
Bigger than the shot was Jordan's defense on the Fred Brown pass to seal it. Not sure who Brown was going to pass the ball to, but Jordan was going to steal it. It was his hedging that cause Brown to double clutch and panic. Worthy, despite being the player of the game, was just so out of position.
Agreed, but so for that matter was Brown! John Thompson said later he didn't wanna call timeout and give Carolina the opportunity to set up defensively, but he should have called at least a 20 to have Sleepy Floyd bring the ball up! Your best should have the rock in that situation and Fred Brown was not the ball handler Floyd was! Brown was a deer caught in the headlights

The first of Patrick Ewing's many postseason losses to MJ.....
GT lost that game because of James Worthy not Jeffrey. Patrick Ewing was better freshman in that game. Ewing leads GT back to the championship game. Jeffrey doesn't take carolina back.

The day Mike Jordan became Michael Jordan 🐐
@BMag4ever;no,THAT day came when he signed the deal with Nike who paid MILLIONS for Stern,to MODIFY all the games defensive rules in Jordans FAVOR,so he could surpass Isaiah and Rick Mahorn in the post-season,and finally be a WINNER,which in turn would cause Nike to be worn(as Nikes were LAUGHED-at in the inner city before 1991)in urban U.S.A,and break the stranglehold Adidas had on the urban sneaker market!! Jordans entire career was SCRIPTED to attain maximum profit for the NBA and Adidas. NO rules were changed to get LeBron a title!!
I like that players can enter the NBA early and make their money, but I miss college basketball the way it was. I dont even watch it anymore. I miss the NBA the way IT was, ...still watch though
.
Sadly, I no longer watch either......too many talented players leaving college after playing only one, maybe two (mostly) meaningless NCAA regular seasons, and too many overpaid players in the NBA not playing hard, and not playing EVERY (or, at the very least, MOST) game(s) during the regular season, all in the name of "load management" (i.e., "resting up" a bunch of pampered 20 and 30 year olds in the best shape of their lives !!), in hopes of a playoff appearance that they then never end up making.....
.
@@sdne1959 Players have complained for years that the season was too long. So, I don't blame them for load mgmt. It IS lots of wear and tear on the body. ( people don't realize how much) Pro football doesn't try to play 25 games a year.
The players have gotten smarter and learned how to extend their playing years.
A shorter season would make it more intense. (The pro football season IS a playoff)
If they shortened basketball to say, 60 games, (never will) they may need to start over with the record book.

What a great post, thank you so much. This game really kept the momentum from the '79 Championship Game going. There were some great players in this game on BOTH teams and two great head coaches.
Dean Smith had been 0-6 in final four games prior to this losing the 1968,1977,1981 finals
He often said however, that his 1977 team was in his opinion his best, but, they choked away the tittle to Marquette when Smith went into his four corner stall offense and blew a lead and the game which was Al Maguire's final game.
don't cry patrick you'll get used to loosing to jordan in the playoffs

James worthy had a incredible game that was the key catalyst for them winning this game
Jack ur right, I hope any NBA team should draft the #23 guy from Carolina, this freshman guy has the nerves of steel to take the last 17 secs of the game. 💪
Even if the NBA team need a Center?
I think that Sam Bowie kid out of Kentucky is gonna be a better pro. Draft him before Jordan
Dean Smith was the reason why the 30 second shot clock was implemented in college basketball..
Well orginally it was the 45 second shot clock implemented in 1986.

Yeah! I don't know why Worthy didn't pass it!
Better to keep possession and eat the clock than risk a pass that could be picked off.

That pass by Fred Brown was worse than Chris Webber's timeout.

Funny how Dean Smith won his 2 titles on those plays.
I'd rate them about equal because the Tar Holes benefited from both UGHHHH!!!!!
@bradlewis6514 Michigan lived on the edge all Tournament.Losing was bound to happen

There were too many big men.
Part of it was that the Knicks counted on him so much on offense that he couldn't afford to get into foul trouble.
He always had the Georgetown mindset, but I think he lost the aura and also remember the Knicks weren't very good at all his first several years in the league so he didn't have the team around him at least not until the early '90s
