When you add ice cubes to your beverage they begin melting fast and can often water down your drink. Using an ICE SPHERE provides the same cooling effect but with less of it coming into contact with the liquid. That means the ice-ball will melt slower while keeping your beverage nice and frosty.
We figured out a simple way to get edible ice balls using tennis balls and balloons. This means you don’t need to buy expensive molds. In fact, you can make these right now with stuff you probably already have laying around your house.

Scientifically speaking they should cool the drink slower compared to cubes, for the very same reason they melt slower, the smaller surface area. But I don't think that needs to be a reason to make them, they still look pretty cool!

Water solutions usually have great energy capacities anyway so chilling the liquid faster might not be what you want. And for longer duration you really can't pick a better shape than the sphere.
I wonder if you could somehow make smaller ice balls and give them a rough outer texture... I want to know if you could explode coke with them like you can with mentos... =p

Part of the novelty of ice balls, aside from the slower melt, is the aesthetic. I prefer using the molds + the cooler method for perfectly clear, spherical ice.

  • @electronicsNmore
    @electronicsNmore 7 років тому +8

True the ice will melt a lot slower, but using smaller pieces of ice will cool the drink much faster due to the increased surface area of the ice in contact with the water.

A round ice cube will cool the drink longer, but slower.
If your goal is to maintain an ice cold beverage, there will be (minor simplification) no difference, since the ice will melt as long as the liquid is warmer than it, and then be limited by the rate an absorption of heat into the drink. That is, ice cube and ice spheres will water down your drink just as much to maintain the same temperature. The real difference is that ice spheres are worse at cooling down your drink.

I use the small canning jars. Fill 1/3 to 1/2 with water, put on lid, freeze. When ready to use, you can slowly warm the glass in a bowl of warm water to release the ice, or, just pour you beverage on top. It will chill the drink, and melt slowly.

lets spot the errors and gaps in logic!
1-less surface area also means smaller cooling effect.
2-spheres have the highest volume to surface area ratio of all shapes so it actually waters your drink down more.
3-cubes are probably one of the best things to cool your drink down (second only to tetrahedra/tetrahedrons) so why change it.
4-powder in balloons is not food safe.
5-nothing about tennis balls is food safe.
6-the "expensive" sphere molds work just perfectly. there's a long time window when you can remove it and there is no need for monitoring.
7-wear a mask while cutting tennis balls to not inhale the powder
please dont misjudge this as hate/cyber bullying, it's just constructive critisism.

The reason that the plastic mould breaks is because you are using regular tap water, tap water has a small amount of gasses in it and other impurities, so when you freeze it they expand more than the mould allows and breaks them. Use distilled water and this will not happen. They will also be very clear.
