Matt Cook getting cheap-shotted by Duncan Keith is GREAT! Neither of you noticed that Matt Cooke was the one THROWING the dirty hits in Multiple clips. He ended Marc Savard's career, and actually kicked someone on the back of their leg slicing their achilies tendon. He was one of the biggest pieces of shit ever to play in the league. So him getting cheap shotted is called PAYBACK for his cheap play. Claude Lemieux is also a piece of shit. His kid Brendan plays in the NHL today.

Knee-on-knee targeting hits are some of the worst in this game. Breaks my heart to watch it because they can ruin someone's career. It's funny that you hear Cooke getting penalized a few times only for Keith to take revenge. I know you said you sounded like you were singling out hockey but in just a recent vid you posted, they were talking about the bounties that Saints had lol. It definitely spans across multiple sports. NHL reaction vid idea: "Playing through the pain".
At 19:00 the hit there is from game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and the hit was on the Might Ducks best player, Paul Kariya. He got knocked out cold but was so determined that he came back later in the game and scored a goal and the fans went berserk.
Matt Cooke not only made the NHL change its rules on head shots and blind side hits, but he changed the trajectory of great players unable to play to their level ever again. He had zero respect for opposing players nor accountability after injuring multiple players.

Cooke was notorious for doing cheap shots. He would knock a guy out at least every 10 games if not fewer. Claude Lemieux looked like an angle compared to Cooke.
@@answeris4217 Naa. Cooke and Lemieux were two players cut from exactly the same cloth. At least Lemieux had the decency to own his cheapness. Cooke swore he reformed his game, than pulled that crap on McDonagh and Barrie. I don't condone the times that he got it back, but I definitely never felt bad for him.
Part of what makes the hockey hits so violent is the speed at which they occur. These can be some big boys, and when they've got some steam behind them, the force of those hits is increased dramatically.
The speed is everything, I agree. I actually got to play with two guys who ended up going to the NHL, and even from a young age, the speed is insane. They say road rage is caused by having to make a lot of decisions at a high speed under stress. I think the same for hockey. The speed just brings out the anger, always has, always will.
totally agreed! these guys have a solid reaction here and can see the difference for sure. at 3:00 is one of the worst. every player knows you don't leave your feet (skates) to fly into someone, especially against the boards like that. i thought it was cool that the guys recognized that as you said...the difference between keeping your head up and bad sportsmanship.
Bert’s hit on Moore didn’t break his neck. It was nikolishin jumping on Bert and landing on Moore’s neck. Bert’s hands are either side of Moore’s head in the video
@@DNReacts Head contact wasn't against the rules until the 2010/11 season. Any hit to the head prior to that wasn't necessarily illegal. The Stevens hits on both Kariya and Lindros were legal at the time they happened. If you got the elbow up and hit the head it was still an elbowing penalty.

I just have to say the Pavel Bure elbow to Shane Churla was a thing of beauty and totally justified. It may have been a dirty hit but Bure was a superstar, Churla a goon who had been abusing Bure every chance he got in a best of 7 series.

A little background on some of these hits, guys: First one, Tom Wilson, 43 for the Capitals, does this kind of stuff all the time Second, Raffi Torres was notorious for doing dirty hits. Got suspended tons of times. Look up some of his suspension videos Third, Aaron Rome hitting Horton in Game Three of the Stanley Cup in 2011. One of the Vancouver players bit Patrice Bergeron in the hand, got away with it, and then scored the game-winning goal in OT the next game. Horton won three games for the Bruins in that playoff run, two in overtime. Aaron Rome, who hit him, was ejected from the game and suspended for the rest of the series. Horton never returned to the series and was never the same again, but Boston went on to win the Cup in seven games, their first since 1972. The hit at the 2:00 mark, Savard was injured twice in rapid succession and received permanent brain damage and never played again At 6:00 is not an illegal hit, just wrong place and wrong time. Pacioretty was concussed and broke part of his back, but he went back to playing. Chara was booed every time he touched the puck in Montreal for the rest of his career. 12:19 Marchand does this all the time. He's known as a troublemaker and gets booed everywhere but Boston 18:38 Wingels got tossed for this
I'm not even a minute in, and this completion had to be 25% to 40% Tom Wilson hits. He's THE dirtiest player in the NHL currently. Next to him is the Tchachuk (Matthew, & Brady) brothers.
That second hit in the video, on Hossa… pretty much ended his career. I think this is the hit that got Torres suspended for the rest of the season, the longest suspension in NHL history up to that time. I might be thinking of a different Raffi Torres hit but he was an incredibly dirty player
It seems like a high number but a major factor to consider is that the NHL has a very high number of hits per game. Between 20-30 per them per game. That averages out to about 50,000 hits every season, league wide. This video covered around 30 years, so that’s 1.7 MILLION hits to source for this video.
Lindros might have been one of the best ever but had to retire because of concussion issues (starting with that hit I think) Can't believe they didn't include the Bertuzzi punch, maybe the dirtiest ever, thanks for vid!
Definitely did not start with the Stevens hit and the scouting report on him from the moment he entered the league is the he keeps his head down entering the zone so yeah he was always going to have those issues
@@F28aj Yeah. At the time, reports said that was his 6th concussion. In retrospect, Eric is pretty sure he had way more than that. The Flyers really treated him poorly, too.
It's not the dirtiest ever. It's only because it ended Moore's career that people think that. It was just a sucker punch. There has been much worse in NHL history. All the Colorado players piling on did not help anything at all.
@@dannycarlow8204 Probably not the dirtiest ever, but he sucker punched from behind and rode Moore's head into the ice breaking his neck. You can see the impact well before the pile on (which was only one Avalanche player trying to get Bertuzzi off and then 2-3 more canucks, but nice try deflecting blame) The people piling on didn't help, but it was the driving an unconscious person's head downward into the ice that broke the neck.
@@etapi65 The Avs player was first in which brought the Canucks players in. Moore f'd around with Naslund and found out. The hit on Naslund was way dirtier and he knew the consequences. If he would have just stood up like a man and dealt with it like most guys he'd be ok.Just bad luck that it ended his career. Max took it way worse from Chara and he still plays. Luck of the draw.
Matt Cooke had such a wide variety of cheap shots. Headshots, knee to knee, but him stamping on Karlsson’s heel with his skate always churns my stomach
@dannycarlow8204 I won't deny that Turgeon wasn't an arrogant little prick, but Hunter was dead wrong for handling that the way he did, when he did it. You just don't blast a guy like that when the play is dead and he has his back turned. It was a really cheap shot.
Turgeon was a coward from birth. Never let the bench during the punch-up in Piestany. I'm not saying it wasn't a cheap shot by Hunter but I think it is possible that Hunter couldn't stand being shown up by someone he viewed as a cowardly worm.@@douglasiles2024
Can't believe they let DALE HUNTER become a head coach after retiring. Hitting someone from behind literal SECONDS after the play is stopped and so blatantly targeting the head should get you banned from the league. No questions.
You might notice some of the same names in this video. Tie Domi, Matt Cooke, Bryan Marchment, Raffi Torres, Duncan Keith, Steve Downey, Dale Hunter. All these guys are in this video more than once
The line between tough and cheap in hockey is a little more blurred and a bit wider than the other sports you mentioned and that line has moved significantly over the years between what is acceptable and what isn't .
You were pretty much on point. Couple guys appeared more than once. Dale Hunter and Duncan Keith I think it was. These are why fighting must remain in hockey. You are both learning loads of stuff!
About the hit at 13:08. The hit by Wilson was dirty af, but imo Vrana was not being mean or dirty. If you watch his gaze when the hit happens, he was looking down for the puck. So he didn't see the hit. There are countless occasions in almost every game where someone throws a clean check in that location, and play just goes on. So, Vrana hears the hit, turns, sees Carlo standing over the puck, and moves to push him off of it. However, unbeknownst to Vrana, Carlo just had his bell rung. So, rather than the resistance you would expect when fighting over a puck in the corner, Carlo just collapses, and the lack of pushback results in Vrana's momentum taking him down on top of Carlo. It LOOKS bad because Carlo just received a nasty cheap shot from Wilson. But for my dollar, Vrana was just trying to play hockey.
2:30 Ngl, Churla had that coming. He was pestering and hitting Bure all night long and Bure retaliated. One of the fastest skaters ever sped up and illegally hit the guy in retaliation.
The head hits are obviously egregious and players know a lot more about the long term implications from hits to the head these days. The knee on knee hits or hits to the legs are almost as bad as they can affect a players ability to skate. Many careers have been ended “back in the day” from knee/leg hits.
In defense of our national sport, it's not like every game is full of cowardly mayhem. This video covers many years with quick clips mashed together. Just like NFL headshot videos.
The game has changed a lot in the time span though this video. Years ago like in the last hit of the video where Stevens crushed Lindros a hit like that today would be much more harshly punished. The league was much more lenient on head hits back then as long as you didn't use your elbow, leave your feet to make a hit or be too long after the player doesn't have the puck anymore (1-2 sec). The players just had to be much more aware on the ice and not put themselves in vulnerable positions. Like getting caught skating over the oppositions blue line with the puck and their head is down not watching for an upcoming hit was kinda considered fair game back then. Much longer ago when Gordie Howe played, he was known for beating players senseless with his stick and throwing elbows all the time.
Grew up in a suburb of Detroit and used to see the Wings play back when the Joe was still Olympia stadium. The new Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is going to be named after Gordie Howe. Nicest man in the world off the ice

Schiefele hit 20 mins is clean. Body hit, well within one step and 1 second of the puck being gone. Can't believe the Todd Bertuzzi hit on Steve Moore isn't in here. Bertuzzi should have been arrested for assault and kicked from the league.
There's barely any fighting now and these types of hits are rare. I think the NHL having incremental suspensions that pretty much take dirty players out of the league did more to prevent these hits
Wish I had discovered this earlier. A few notes: Claude Lemieux's son, Brendan currently plays for the Philadelphia Flyers, was suspended two seasons ago for biting another player during a fight. Both Matt Cooke and Raffi Torres were basically suspended out of a career. Neither could adjust to being just hockey players. Further on Cooke, he sliced Erik Karlsson's achilles tendon with his skate, nearly ending Karlsson's career. While deemed "accidental", there are doubters (including me) on that. I saw the Domi hit on Niedermayer when it happened. Domi was having the best game of his life and I remember being supercharged about it, and it all came crashing down in that instant. Domi's son Max just got signed by his Dad's old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. While Max isn't a fighter in the old school sense, there were a few players who found out that Max can handle himself quite well when the situation calls for it. Again, I happened to be watching the game on T.V. when Dale Hunter hit Pierre Turgeon. I didn't have a rooting interest in the game, but as a hockey fan I felt crushed by that. Hunter is currently owner and head coach of the London Knights, a Jr. A team that regularly graduates good to great players to the NHL. I think the worst moment for me, as a young hockey fan was waking up to hear on the radio that Ted Green and Chico Maki were involved in a stick swinging incident that was horrific. I was 10 years old at the time. I think that incident really cemented my views of preferring skilled players to "goons". I like good big clean hits, but I always hated the dirty stuff.
Dale Hunter was a piece of shit while he played and idk how he gained ownership of the London Knights. Surely there's a more respected, more skilled retired hockey player that would be a better influence on young kids?
Like the Torres 41 game suspension, Wilson on Sundqvist (the first hit) and Downie on McAmmond (4th hit) were both also preseason games (basically, friendlies to get ready for the season). Just...why? I get competitiveness, but going that hard in a game like that is madness (at least Downie was not guaranteed a spot on the roster, the others were well-established players). Also, as a Leaf fan, I still love Tie Domi, but I will never forgive him for that elbow on Niedermayer. Leafs were going up 3-2 in that series and had just played their best game of the series and made the Devils look foolish. They went on to lose the next 2 games, including a game 7 where they got 6 shots the whole game (I'll still say they got more than 6, but not that much more), and the Devils went on to win the Cup.
I'd also say, a few of these "cheapshots" were not as bad as the result. Marchment on Nieuwendyk is definitely viewed as a cheapshot because of Marchment's (deserved) reputation, but I still maintain it was a clean play that was made worse by bad luck positioning. Similar with Rice on Karpov: just bad geometry on what would be a clean hit even today. The large majority of these hits are still disgusting. Especially the ones where they don't even have the puck.
Those 2 of the last 3 were legal at the time they happened. Stevens was notorious for those types of hits. He got Lindros like 3 times. Cooke was in there alot he was notorious as well. He once took his skate an clipped Erik Karlsson's achilles tendon. Karlsson was on pace to be the leagues greatest defenceman. He is a good watch for skilled play.
The thing about hockey is that there are all of these hard surfaces, sharp skates and sticks that can injury you after a hit and these players are moving fast. That's what makes the sport particularly brutal. o
A few of these hits,the Referee did call a penalty. In these cases it's between 4 or 5 minutes in the box for the penalty,some times an extra 10 for Misconduct and ejection from the game for a Game Misconduct.
Headshots were allowed in the NHL up until about 15 years ago or so I think. The league was much more violent in the 70's and 80's (for instance Probert headbutting with his helmet on), the 90's had more fighters than ever before and the modern day NHL is much, much tamer than it used to be, but now the players are bigger and faster than ever. Great video, very interesting to watch.
Fandom is a hell of drug. The entire video I'm like yep cheap cheap cheap except for the Bruins ones, where (with a couple of exceptions) I'm like, "That wasn't so bad!"
Dale hunter hit has some background. Team Canada and the ussr had a bench clearing fight and Pierre T was the ONLY CANADIAN WHO DIDNT FIGHT. So all Canadians lost respect for him. Hunter saw his chance at redemption and took it
If you want to see a montage of dirty hits like charging, cross checking and hitting from behind, just follow Alexander Ovechkin who is undoubtedly the dirtiest player since Ed Van Impe of the Broadstreet Bullies in Philadelphia. And he never gets a penalty call. In the old days Ovechkin would have been carried off the ice on a stretcher
As a hockey fan, I'm embarrassed that you've seen this. Let me be clear, none of those hits were acceptable! The worst part is, every hit except maybe 2 or 3 were made by players who did those kind of hits regularly. A few names came up more than once, like Matt Cooke, Brad Marchant, Tom Wilson, Dale Hunter, Bryan Marchment... These guys always found jobs in the NHL, not despite but because they played like that, which is a huge shame to the league. You should watch a Wayne Gretzky video next, to cleanse your palette.
There's no justifying many of the hits in hockey. Checking, at one time, was about physically moving an opponent off the puck, not launching your body into an opponent in a clear attempt to inflict pain and injury.
I'll still never understand how Chara wasn't suspended or fined for pushing Paciorettys head into the stanchion on that play. That said I recently discovered your channel and you guys are just the best and I eagerly look forward to every video you drop!
It's tough to suspended someone for an accident. Just because someone gets hurt, doesn't mean it was intentional or that the player should be suspended. The only "dirty" part of the hit is that it was interference
The Proebert fights are legendary... I can't remember the game but when the whistle blew to start the game, every player dropped their gloves and started fighting
Happened a few times. Is John Tortorella's specialty. Happened between his Rangers against the Devils, and his Canucks against the Flames (whom he went after in the dressing room during the first intermission).

6:00 That nearly ended Pacioretty's life. It was close that he didn't die on the ice. Good thing was that it changed safety of players again. Which is always a good thing. Too bad there kinda needs to happen something, before someone realizes that "maybe we should've done something beforehand"
Just bullet points and you’ll have a pretty clear idea. You can’t: - jump off the ice when you hit - hit from behind unless the recipient turns his back in the last second - Hit the head as the primary point of contact - “charge” the opponent by taking too many consecutive strides leading to the hit or covers too much runway. It’s a subjective call I think. Those are the main nono’s, I think.
Some context to the cheap shot by Dale Hunter after Pierre Turgeon had already scored. It was the cheapest of cheap shots to be sure. No debate. You called it cowardly. It was a cheap shot for sure and Dale Hunter received a steep and deserved punishment. Dale Hunter was no coward though, he was tough as nails. Turgeon - on the other hand - was a coward! In the 1987 World Junior Championship Canada had a full on brawl with the Soviet Union. The Soviets had a bad tournament and were completely out of contention while Canada was playing for a medal A fight was instigated by the Soviets (in my opinion) and when the first player came off the Soviet bench both benches emptied to begin what was called the "Punch-Up in Piestany". The fighting went on and on. The referees left the ice and the fighting continued. (The officials were abysmal.) They turned out the lights in the arena and the fighting continued. The one player that never left the bench was Turgeon which left at least one Canadian being double teamed by two Soviets, which you can see in the video. Trust me, if you have ever played a team sport you know you defend your teammates. Nobody had any respect for Turgeon. He was a coward. He lived his life as a coward. He will eventually die as a coward. Was Hunter wrong? Yes, no question. Is it possible that he hated Turgeon and wouldn't have done this to another player? Very possibly.

20:16 One of THE saddest things in hockey. This hit basically started the decline of Eric Lindros' career. He was a phenomenal player. If not for this hit, he might've easily been top 10 all time. But we never know now... Lindros was big, talented, fast. Basically a "make a player" with every physical and athletic ability turned to 10. But the concussion he received in that, killed his career, even if he tried to play for years after it, but he never was the same force of nature he was before this hit.
Instant replay did not arrive in the NHL until 1991. Some of your clips were from the 80's, that's why they didn't go upstairs for a replay by the officials
Two clips that never get old for me based on these types of hits are Raffi Torres getting worked over by Adam McQuaid, and Matt Cooke getting one-punched by Evander Kane.
The NHL encouraged all those dirty hits during the mid 90’s to the mid 2000’s to make casual fans tune in just to see dirty hits. One of the worst periods of hockey and there were a few teams that the NHL instructed the refs not to call penalties on.

For context, that first hit by Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals against Oskar Sundqvist was in a pre-season game. The equivalent in the PL would be a friendly. Absolute scumbag of a player lol.

Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't see the McSoreley slash on Brashear, or Bertuzzi on Moore. I just feel like that any hit on the ice that results in criminal charges should be included in a video of the dirtiest hits of all time.
Leafs were up 3 games to 2 when Domi threw that elbow. Woke up New Jersey and cost the Leafs a chance at the Cup. No idea why he is still loved in Toronto.
Using your elbow to intentionally hit someone is extra bad since you're going to hit someone's face (which is usually not completely protected) using your elbow pads, and perhaps even adding some speed. Those are usually major penalties and there could be a fine added by the NHL if it was intentional. It's okay to be physical, and it's okay to use shoulder-to-shoulder, but it's not okay to create useless danger.
The NHL refuses to implement serious suspensions to really reduce this kind of insane shit. Players are suspended for a few games at best. The season is 82 games. Intent to injure should be 20, 40, 80 game suspensions. It's why so many people who love hockey can't be bothered with the NHL- the stagnant ratings show it.
Paul karyias moment was the most inspirational moment in hockey probably in all of sports very underrated moment. Check out Scott stevens hit on Paul 4mins long to get an actual feel for how hard it was.
Check out the all-out brawl from the 2003-04 season between the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers. It all happened in the last few minutes of the game. Not really any "dirty" or "cheap" hits/shots, but tons of fights. Set the NHL record for penalty minutes in a single match; even the goalies fought each other. By the end, there were barely enough unpenalized players on either team to finish the match.
That Scott Stevens hit against Eric Lindros at 20:20 - essentially ended Lindros' career. He never was the same after that, that hit was his eighth concussion in his career.
@@danielnoseworthy6679 He had a whole bunch of concussions though before and after that hit. It was a cumulative thing not because of the Stevens hit specifically. It just the one people remember and the one people talk about. Hell he got a pretty bad o e from Kasperitis before this one, no o e claims that hit "ended his career". I understand hyperbole but I see this claim often made from people being literal as well.
Some players made a career out of cheap shots. Claude Lemieux, Brad Marchment, Dale Hunter, and to some extent Scott Stevens all did it. Of course they claimed it was the heat of the moment.
that check that left the player face down on the ice, would have been legal if the aggressor hadn't leaned in to amplify the impact and i'm not sure but his skates didn't leave the ice just prior to the crash.
Hockey hits look so visceral (and are) because of the speed of the game! If people got hit like this just running into each other they could get hurt! Increase the speed and you increase the impact! The speed is also why there are more dirty plays, you have far less time to make decisions!
I’ve never heard anyone defend Ulf Samuelsson’s knee on knee hit on Cam Neely as “clean”. It was dirty as shit and I believe they had a bit of a history/personal rivalry as well. Which makes that hit look even less “coincidental”
You guys really need to watch some Eric Lindros career highlights. We will be unlikely see someone who had the combo of speed, power and skill ever again.

I am Canadian. I grew up playing hockey. Some of these hits get me riled up as well. Playing hard and playing dirty is a big difference.

Knee-on-knee targeting hits are some of the worst in this game. Breaks my heart to watch it because they can ruin someone's career. It's funny that you hear Cooke getting penalized a few times only for Keith to take revenge.
I know you said you sounded like you were singling out hockey but in just a recent vid you posted, they were talking about the bounties that Saints had lol. It definitely spans across multiple sports.

At 19:00 the hit there is from game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and the hit was on the Might Ducks best player, Paul Kariya. He got knocked out cold but was so determined that he came back later in the game and scored a goal and the fans went berserk.
Love that he managed to come back and even score! Incredible after that!
Also, he has stated later that he doesn't remember anything that happened after the hit. Brain injuries are scary.
In this day age paul Kayla would be in concussion protocol after that kind of hit
Kariya, Lindros and Turgeon's careers were cut short because of these types of hits.
Playing centre in the Early Trap days was harsh.
I mean we call this a hero story - but it's likely the delay in treatment cost him his career.
That 41 game suspension, Torres had a history and reputation for being a dirty player, and that was during a preseason game too.
Matt Cooke not only made the NHL change its rules on head shots and blind side hits, but he changed the trajectory of great players unable to play to their level ever again. He had zero respect for opposing players nor accountability after injuring multiple players.
He straight up ended Marc Savard's career.

Part of what makes the hockey hits so violent is the speed at which they occur. These can be some big boys, and when they've got some steam behind them, the force of those hits is increased dramatically.
The speed is everything, I agree. I actually got to play with two guys who ended up going to the NHL, and even from a young age, the speed is insane. They say road rage is caused by having to make a lot of decisions at a high speed under stress. I think the same for hockey. The speed just brings out the anger, always has, always will.
and when we see these biggest hits video, it's usually half the speed of today's game. crazy.

at 3:00 is one of the worst. every player knows you don't leave your feet (skates) to fly into someone, especially against the boards like that. i thought it was cool that the guys recognized that as you said...the difference between keeping your head up and bad sportsmanship.
Interesting that they had the hit from Moore on Naslund (3:55) but doesn't include the retaliation hit that broke Moore's neck by Bertuzzi.

Most of these are considered dirty because the player leaves his feet to make the hit or because the head was the major point of contact.

@@DNReacts Head contact wasn't against the rules until the 2010/11 season. Any hit to the head prior to that wasn't necessarily illegal. The Stevens hits on both Kariya and Lindros were legal at the time they happened. If you got the elbow up and hit the head it was still an elbowing penalty.

I just have to say the Pavel Bure elbow to Shane Churla was a thing of beauty and totally justified. It may have been a dirty hit but Bure was a superstar, Churla a goon who had been abusing Bure every chance he got in a best of 7 series.

A little background on some of these hits, guys:
First one, Tom Wilson, 43 for the Capitals, does this kind of stuff all the time
Second, Raffi Torres was notorious for doing dirty hits. Got suspended tons of times. Look up some of his suspension videos
Third, Aaron Rome hitting Horton in Game Three of the Stanley Cup in 2011. One of the Vancouver players bit Patrice Bergeron in the hand, got away with it, and then scored the game-winning goal in OT the next game. Horton won three games for the Bruins in that playoff run, two in overtime. Aaron Rome, who hit him, was ejected from the game and suspended for the rest of the series. Horton never returned to the series and was never the same again, but Boston went on to win the Cup in seven games, their first since 1972.
The hit at the 2:00 mark, Savard was injured twice in rapid succession and received permanent brain damage and never played again
At 6:00 is not an illegal hit, just wrong place and wrong time. Pacioretty was concussed and broke part of his back, but he went back to playing. Chara was booed every time he touched the puck in Montreal for the rest of his career.

That second hit in the video, on Hossa… pretty much ended his career. I think this is the hit that got Torres suspended for the rest of the season, the longest suspension in NHL history up to that time.

A lot of these hits are 10-20 years old, before the NHL finally started cracking down on cheap shots.

But also, 10-20 years old in a game that has been around 100 years. Imagine the carnage we haven't witnessed.
It seems like a high number but a major factor to consider is that the NHL has a very high number of hits per game. Between 20-30 per them per game. That averages out to about 50,000 hits every season, league wide. This video covered around 30 years, so that’s 1.7 MILLION hits to source for this video.
Lindros might have been one of the best ever but had to retire because of concussion issues (starting with that hit I think)

It's not the dirtiest ever. It's only because it ended Moore's career that people think that. It was just a sucker punch. There has been much worse in NHL history. All the Colorado players piling on did not help anything at all.

You can see the impact well before the pile on (which was only one Avalanche player trying to get Bertuzzi off and then 2-3 more canucks, but nice try deflecting blame) The people piling on didn't help, but it was the driving an unconscious person's head downward into the ice that broke the neck.

Matt Cooke had such a wide variety of cheap shots. Headshots, knee to knee, but him stamping on Karlsson’s heel with his skate always churns my stomach

Pierre Turgeon was never the same after that hit by Dale Hunter. It's a shame, because he was an elite level player up to that point.
I don't want to say Turgeon deserved it, but he was one of the least respected players in the league. He was not liked around the league.

Turgeon was a coward from birth. Never let the bench during the punch-up in Piestany. I'm not saying it wasn't a cheap shot by Hunter but I think it is possible that Hunter couldn't stand being shown up by someone he viewed as a cowardly worm.@@douglasiles2024

The line between tough and cheap in hockey is a little more blurred and a bit wider than the other sports you mentioned and that line has moved significantly over the years between what is acceptable and what isn't .
You were pretty much on point. Couple guys appeared more than once. Dale Hunter and Duncan Keith I think it was. These are why fighting must remain in hockey. You are both learning loads of stuff!

When looking at the name Lemieux, remember there are 2. One is a top 2 player of all time, the other is one of the dirtiest pos of all time.
About the hit at 13:08. The hit by Wilson was dirty af, but imo Vrana was not being mean or dirty. If you watch his gaze when the hit happens, he was looking down for the puck. So he didn't see the hit. There are countless occasions in almost every game where someone throws a clean check in that location, and play just goes on. So, Vrana hears the hit, turns, sees Carlo standing over the puck, and moves to push him off of it. However, unbeknownst to Vrana, Carlo just had his bell rung. So, rather than the resistance you would expect when fighting over a puck in the corner, Carlo just collapses, and the lack of pushback results in Vrana's momentum taking him down on top of Carlo.
It LOOKS bad because Carlo just received a nasty cheap shot from Wilson. But for my dollar, Vrana was just trying to play hockey.

Ngl, Churla had that coming. He was pestering and hitting Bure all night long and Bure retaliated. One of the fastest skaters ever sped up and illegally hit the guy in retaliation.
Thankfully, the league is now taking a much more punitive approach to dirty hits, especially head shots.

The head hits are obviously egregious and players know a lot more about the long term implications from hits to the head these days. The knee on knee hits or hits to the legs are almost as bad as they can affect a players ability to skate. Many careers have been ended “back in the day” from knee/leg hits.

In defense of our national sport, it's not like every game is full of cowardly mayhem. This video covers many years with quick clips mashed together. Just like NFL headshot videos.
The game has changed a lot in the time span though this video. Years ago like in the last hit of the video where Stevens crushed Lindros a hit like that today would be much more harshly punished. The league was much more lenient on head hits back then as long as you didn't use your elbow, leave your feet to make a hit or be too long after the player doesn't have the puck anymore (1-2 sec). The players just had to be much more aware on the ice and not put themselves in vulnerable positions. Like getting caught skating over the oppositions blue line with the puck and their head is down not watching for an upcoming hit was kinda considered fair game back then. Much longer ago when Gordie Howe played, he was known for beating players senseless with his stick and throwing elbows all the time.
Grew up in a suburb of Detroit and used to see the Wings play back when the Joe was still Olympia stadium. The new Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is going to be named after Gordie Howe. Nicest man in the world off the ice

Schiefele hit 20 mins is clean. Body hit, well within one step and 1 second of the puck being gone. Can't believe the Todd Bertuzzi hit on Steve Moore isn't in here. Bertuzzi should have been arrested for assault and kicked from the league.

There's barely any fighting now and these types of hits are rare.
I think the NHL having incremental suspensions that pretty much take dirty players out of the league did more to prevent these hits
This video is from a year ago, and you can count the number of hits from the previous 3 seasons on one hand.
Wish I had discovered this earlier. A few notes: Claude Lemieux's son, Brendan currently plays for the Philadelphia Flyers, was suspended two seasons ago for biting another player during a fight. Both Matt Cooke and Raffi Torres were basically suspended out of a career. Neither could adjust to being just hockey players. Further on Cooke, he sliced Erik Karlsson's achilles tendon with his skate, nearly ending Karlsson's career. While deemed "accidental", there are doubters (including me) on that. I saw the Domi hit on Niedermayer when it happened. Domi was having the best game of his life and I remember being supercharged about it, and it all came crashing down in that instant. Domi's son Max just got signed by his Dad's old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. While Max isn't a fighter in the old school sense, there were a few players who found out that Max can handle himself quite well when the situation calls for it. Again, I happened to be watching the game on T.V. when Dale Hunter hit Pierre Turgeon. I didn't have a rooting interest in the game, but as a hockey fan I felt crushed by that. Hunter is currently owner and head coach of the London Knights, a Jr. A team that regularly graduates good to great players to the NHL. I think the worst moment for me, as a young hockey fan was waking up to hear on the radio that Ted Green and Chico Maki were involved in a stick swinging incident that was horrific. I was 10 years old at the time. I think that incident really cemented my views of preferring skilled players to "goons". I like good big clean hits, but I always hated the dirty stuff.
Dale Hunter was a piece of shit while he played and idk how he gained ownership of the London Knights. Surely there's a more respected, more skilled retired hockey player that would be a better influence on young kids?

Like the Torres 41 game suspension, Wilson on Sundqvist (the first hit) and Downie on McAmmond (4th hit) were both also preseason games (basically, friendlies to get ready for the season). Just...why? I get competitiveness, but going that hard in a game like that is madness (at least Downie was not guaranteed a spot on the roster, the others were well-established players).
Also, as a Leaf fan, I still love Tie Domi, but I will never forgive him for that elbow on Niedermayer. Leafs were going up 3-2 in that series and had just played their best game of the series and made the Devils look foolish. They went on to lose the next 2 games, including a game 7 where they got 6 shots the whole game (I'll still say they got more than 6, but not that much more), and the Devils went on to win the Cup.
I’m with. Tough play is fine. But cheap shots like targeting someone’s head are inexcusable.
I'd also say, a few of these "cheapshots" were not as bad as the result. Marchment on Nieuwendyk is definitely viewed as a cheapshot because of Marchment's (deserved) reputation, but I still maintain it was a clean play that was made worse by bad luck positioning. Similar with Rice on Karpov: just bad geometry on what would be a clean hit even today.
The large majority of these hits are still disgusting. Especially the ones where they don't even have the puck.
Those 2 of the last 3 were legal at the time they happened.
Stevens was notorious for those types of hits. He got Lindros like 3 times.
Cooke was in there alot he was notorious as well. He once took his skate an clipped Erik Karlsson's achilles tendon. Karlsson was on pace to be the leagues greatest defenceman. He is a good watch for skilled play.
That Bure hit on Churla was crazy dirty. Bure was so small compared to that dude and he just levelled him.
I respect the fact that you knew the history of that hit by the Avs.
The thing about hockey is that there are all of these hard surfaces, sharp skates and sticks that can injury you after a hit and these players are moving fast. That's what makes the sport particularly brutal. o

A few of these hits,the Referee did call a penalty. In these cases it's between 4 or 5 minutes in the box for the penalty,some times an extra 10 for Misconduct and ejection from the game for a Game Misconduct.
Headshots were allowed in the NHL up until about 15 years ago or so I think. The league was much more violent in the 70's and 80's (for instance Probert headbutting with his helmet on), the 90's had more fighters than ever before and the modern day NHL is much, much tamer than it used to be, but now the players are bigger and faster than ever.

Dale hunter hit has some background. Team Canada and the ussr had a bench clearing fight and Pierre T was the ONLY CANADIAN WHO DIDNT FIGHT. So all Canadians lost respect for him. Hunter saw his chance at redemption and took it
If you want to see a montage of dirty hits like charging, cross checking and hitting from behind, just follow Alexander Ovechkin who is undoubtedly the dirtiest player since Ed Van Impe of the Broadstreet Bullies in Philadelphia. And he never gets a penalty call. In the old days Ovechkin would have been carried off the ice on a stretcher

As a hockey fan, I'm embarrassed that you've seen this. Let me be clear, none of those hits were acceptable! The worst part is, every hit except maybe 2 or 3 were made by players who did those kind of hits regularly. A few names came up more than once, like Matt Cooke, Brad Marchant, Tom Wilson, Dale Hunter, Bryan Marchment... These guys always found jobs in the NHL, not despite but because they played like that, which is a huge shame to the league. You should watch a Wayne Gretzky video next, to cleanse your palette.

There's no justifying many of the hits in hockey. Checking, at one time, was about physically moving an opponent off the puck, not launching your body into an opponent in a clear attempt to inflict pain and injury.

It's tough to suspended someone for an accident. Just because someone gets hurt, doesn't mean it was intentional or that the player should be suspended. The only "dirty" part of the hit is that it was interference

You can’t:
- jump off the ice when you hit
- hit from behind unless the recipient turns his back in the last second
- Hit the head as the primary point of contact
- “charge” the opponent by taking too many consecutive strides leading to the hit or covers too much runway. It’s a subjective call I think.
Those are the main nono’s, I think.
When the enforcer role was erased from hockey is when you started seeing more and more of these hits happen.
The craziest thing about the Downie hit, (and I am a Philly fan) .. it was Pre Season.. both those guys are making the team.
Some context to the cheap shot by Dale Hunter after Pierre Turgeon had already scored. It was the cheapest of cheap shots to be sure. No debate. You called it cowardly. It was a cheap shot for sure and Dale Hunter received a steep and deserved punishment. Dale Hunter was no coward though, he was tough as nails. Turgeon - on the other hand - was a coward! In the 1987 World Junior Championship Canada had a full on brawl with the Soviet Union. The Soviets had a bad tournament and were completely out of contention while Canada was playing for a medal A fight was instigated by the Soviets (in my opinion) and when the first player came off the Soviet bench both benches emptied to begin what was called the "Punch-Up in Piestany". The fighting went on and on. The referees left the ice and the fighting continued. (The officials were abysmal.) They turned out the lights in the arena and the fighting continued. The one player that never left the bench was Turgeon which left at least one Canadian being double teamed by two Soviets, which you can see in the video. Trust me, if you have ever played a team sport you know you defend your teammates. Nobody had any respect for Turgeon. He was a coward. He lived his life as a coward. He will eventually die as a coward. Was Hunter wrong? Yes, no question. Is it possible that he hated Turgeon and wouldn't have done this to another player? Very possibly.

One of THE saddest things in hockey. This hit basically started the decline of Eric Lindros' career. He was a phenomenal player. If not for this hit, he might've easily been top 10 all time.

Instant replay did not arrive in the NHL until 1991. Some of your clips were from the 80's, that's why they didn't go upstairs for a replay by the officials

Two clips that never get old for me based on these types of hits are Raffi Torres getting worked over by Adam McQuaid, and Matt Cooke getting one-punched by Evander Kane.

The NHL encouraged all those dirty hits during the mid 90’s to the mid 2000’s to make casual fans tune in just to see dirty hits. One of the worst periods of hockey and there were a few teams that the NHL instructed the refs not to call penalties on.

For context, that first hit by Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals against Oskar Sundqvist was in a pre-season game. The equivalent in the PL would be a friendly. Absolute scumbag of a player lol.

Using your elbow to intentionally hit someone is extra bad since you're going to hit someone's face (which is usually not completely protected) using your elbow pads, and perhaps even adding some speed. Those are usually major penalties and there could be a fine added by the NHL if it was intentional. It's okay to be physical, and it's okay to use shoulder-to-shoulder, but it's not okay to create useless danger.
The NHL refuses to implement serious suspensions to really reduce this kind of insane shit. Players are suspended for a few games at best. The season is 82 games. Intent to injure should be 20, 40, 80 game suspensions. It's why so many people who love hockey can't be bothered with the NHL- the stagnant ratings show it.

It all happened in the last few minutes of the game. Not really any "dirty" or "cheap" hits/shots, but tons of fights. Set the NHL record for penalty minutes in a single match; even the goalies fought each other. By the end, there were barely enough unpenalized players on either team to finish the match.
That Scott Stevens hit against Eric Lindros at 20:20 - essentially ended Lindros' career. He never was the same after that, that hit was his eighth concussion in his career.
He played 5 more seasons.

It just the one people remember and the one people talk about. Hell he got a pretty bad o e from Kasperitis before this one, no o e claims that hit "ended his career".

Some players made a career out of cheap shots. Claude Lemieux, Brad Marchment, Dale Hunter, and to some extent Scott Stevens all did it. Of course they claimed it was the heat of the moment.
In Footballsoccer they bring a cot to an injury to take the player to the training room. NHL wheeled out on a trauma cart cleared hot to SURG 1.
that check that left the player face down on the ice, would have been legal if the aggressor hadn't leaned in to amplify the impact and i'm not sure but his skates didn't leave the ice just prior to the crash.
Hockey hits look so visceral (and are) because of the speed of the game! If people got hit like this just running into each other they could get hurt! Increase the speed and you increase the impact! The speed is also why there are more dirty plays, you have far less time to make decisions!
I’ve never heard anyone defend Ulf Samuelsson’s knee on knee hit on Cam Neely as “clean”. It was dirty as shit and I believe they had a bit of a history/personal rivalry as well. Which makes that hit look even less “coincidental”
