Pacioretty was out for the rest of the season, but came back the next year, and still plays to this day. Because of this hit, all the stanchions in all the arenas are rounded, and not straight any more, lessening the likelihood of a repeat instance. It was an incredibly dirty hit, though. Newer fans sometimes don't realize that headshots used to be legal. The Cooke-Savard and Messier-Modano hits were within the bounds of the rules at the time.
You missed the hit by Darian Hatcher of the Dallas Stars on Jeremy Roenick of the Phoenix Coyotes. Broke his jaw. Retaliation hit for a dirty hit on Mike Modano earlier that season.
Headshots are definitely a concern, especially considering that they wear elbow pads that have a hard plastic exterior. It makes them weapons. Ironically headshots are a more recent (late 80s to present) development (not that they didn’t occasionally happen). Back in the day players didn’t wear helmets so head shots were far less frequent (40s to early 70s when more and more players started to wear helmets). Craig McTavish was the last player to play and not wear a helmet (mid to late 80s as I recall). Knee on knee hits were often seen as the dirtiest hit, because a knee injury can effect your ability to skate and thus end your career in a blink of an eye.
I got called up to double AA hockey team for a couple games when I was 13…..the last guy that got clocked in your video, was on that team!! I played with him…..Rob Murphy is his name. He is a huge person! He was more often on the giving end of those highlights reels. Cheers.
2:10 There are two standout hockey players named 'Lemieux'... Mario Lemieux is a Pittsburgh Penguins legend, one of the best players of all time, in many respects second only to Gretzky, career cut a bit short because of leg and back trouble and other things... The other is Claude Lemieux, who's the best offensive upside enforcer in the game's history. 'Ferocious' is a good word to describe his play, but he also put up pretty great numbers for someone with his style of play. While he had a couple seasons around 80 points and mostly hovered around 50-60 in his prime, he was an outstanding playoff performer, won playoff MVP one year, made the playoffs in 15 straight seasons and won 4 Stanley Cups. His son, Brendan, is a depth player / lineup filler / pure grinder in the NHL right now, playing for the Flyers.
Your reaction to Paciorretty getting hit into that stanchion between the benches... that is why we now have curved glass on either side of the benches to help prevent that kind of injury. Pacioretty suffered a concussion and fractured vertebra.
At 4:37 in this video you play a clip with Steve Moore hitting a Colorado player. It wasn’t a huge dirty hit. The next game the 2 teams would play Joe Sakic checked Steve Moore then drove his head into the ice. Steve Moore was paralyzed. Joe Sakic made me ashamed of the sport I love. Odd coincidence he also played in the punch up in Piestence.
@@morganmckenzie1303 I'd consider Tom Wilson a ratty player like Marchand. Also Tom Wilson is not as bad anymore as he used to he's gotten smarter and Marchand aswell.
@morganmckenzie1303 He's definitely not in tCook's league, but he did hit to injure. One of his worst hits gets very little attention IMO. The Marshasault hit was sooooo late and shoulder to jaw
This is a large part of the reason that fighting doesn’t get outlawed. The argument is that people would play a lot dirtier and take dangerous cheap shots if they didn’t either face the risk of getting beaten up for a cheap shot, or have the ability to settle a score in a relatively safe way.
Not all hockey injuries are from hits, idk if UA-cam would allow it but you could check out the worst injuries if you’d like to follow this path to its extent ig

Im just waiting for him to realize that on the first hit where the guy got hit into the divider in between the benches, the guy that delivered the hit is 6’9. (around 7’1 or 7’2 on skates)
I really need you to cover the response to the Lemuix on Draper hit, the game was 3-26-97, Darren McCarty got Claude back, it’s known as the “turtle game” bc Claude just covered and tried to get into his shoulder pads, and that game sparked arguably the greatest rivalry runs in the game. God damn I miss those Red Wings v Avalanche days. I subbed, so I’ll be able to see your react video on the McCarty answer game, it’s an all timer, even if I wasn’t a resident of HOCKEYTOWN.

Richard Zednik who was hit in one of these clips also once had his jugular cut by a skate. I’ve seen that happen twice (the other time was Clint Malarchuk) and both guys are lucky to be alive.
Should watch hits from forumer nhl player Niklas Kronwall most of his hits should have been called for charging because he’s targeted the player before they would have the puck. Also should watch Moritz Seider he has a lot of hits from when people are trying to hit him in his defensive zone and he just sits them down.
At 6:56 he did actually break his neck. Absolutely disgusting play, I remember watching it live. The player never fully recovered and was never at the level he was before this hit. Sad
That Pacioretty hit really could have derailed his career but he came back strong. Bunch of broken bones in the face. They even modified the shape of the glass so the lip isn't such a big edge.
No leaving the ice, no shots from behind, no head shots. Strange but the other national sport lacrosse, if your team has possession of the ball you can be hit. Even if you don't have the ball but one of your other team mates does. They take the hockey kids in the summer and they play lacrosse as in minor hockey now has stopped the hitting. However, they come to lacrosse to get an idea of what could happen. Too funny, I don't know how many hockey kids have come to say that they are soo glad to finally be able to hit. Two games later hard to get them on the floor ha ha. You get the are you crazy look. Not all it's cracked up to be.
Paul karyia best video to hear how hard it was is game 6 of the 03 Stanley cup final 4:04 video he was unconscious for almost a min. Doesn’t remember getting hit etc. he had 6 concussions in his career so sad.
Grew up playing hockey all my life, and also a huge soccer fan (Arsenal). I get so upset when I see a flop over light contact to draw a yellow/red, compared to what happens in the NHL (guy a couple nights ago got about 70 stitches on his face, came back to finish the game). So frustrating. Soccer is awesome except for that.
I’m surprised Marty McSorley wasn’t in the original compilation. Correct me if I’m wrong but he’s the only player I know of to be charged with assault after a nasty high stick.
3:15. Americans LAUGH when they see British Football players or football players in any country tumble and "cry & wince" in pain after a slide tackle or a trip. Imagine what it feels like to be hit by a 220LB traveling at 40MPH on ice getting elbowed in the head? Ice Hockey and American Football hit ferociously hard! Cleats to an ankle via a slide tackle hurts briefly, but it won't cause a player to lose consciousness or be taken out on a stretcher with a neck brace to avoid spinal injury.
2:18 Matt Cooke essentially ended Marc Savard's career with that hit. Savard had to lay in a dark room for months because of it. Cooke is one of the NHL's dirtiest players of the last 30 years. You should watch a compilation of him.
There's two or three names that you'll see regularly coming back in this kind of video: Dale Hunter, Claude Lemieux, and Tie Domi...and from the 80's, there was of course Ulf "knee breaker" Samuelsson.
Canucks last game of the season was last night and at one point Josh Brown connected knee on knee with Nils Åman and Kyle Burroughs stepped up to fight Brown. Brown is listed at 6’5 and 220 lbs while Burroughs is 6’ and 180 and Burroughs managed to hold his own. If you’d like to see some crazy mismatched fights you should check out former Canuck Rick Rypien. He was a little guy who CONSTANTLY stuck up for his team mates and quite often came out on top!
Only real injury I've had in hockey was a broken arm after a hit from behind. Fighting for the puck in the corner and someone hit me dead on the numbers and bent my arm at a weird angle against the boards. Didn't even know it was broken till tried and failed to get up using the arm twice. Would like to count the half-fake tooth I have but that was from the "can go fast but can't stop" stage of learning to ice skate.
Back a few years ago in high school hockey, I had the same thing happen to me as in the second clip. Got right back up though, played the rest of the game, and the next day I ended up having to go to hospital and was diagnosed with a major concussion:( was not fun lol
This is one part of the game that I’m happy they have almost gotten rid of! Players are now monitored after taking a big hit to see if they show any signs of concussion! The head shots are now very rare in hockey…….thank god!
Isn’t Zednik the one who also got his carotid artery sliced open. I remember that being heart stopping. He is one of 2 players in the NHL that have had their throat cut open. The other one is Clint. I recommend not looking it up if your squeamish of blood. That incident was horrific.
I figured I'd see Dale Hunter in this video. He is one of the guys that you want off the ice but you would rather have on your favorite team. You should do a video on the best hip checks in hockey or the best open ice hits.
the 1:45 hit opened the floodgates to some of the best rivalry hockey we've ever had the joy of watching. As for Dirtiest hits, there were non more dirty than Scott Stevens
I'm a little surprised that the "Bertuzzi vs Moore" incident didn't show up in this video (the hit that lead up to it did), but when asked "What is the dirtiest hit you have ever seen?", that would be my answer. Wasn't even really a hit, more like assaulting another player on the ice. It ended Steve Moore's career, and I personally don't think that Todd Bertuzzi's suspension was long enough (mainly because most of the suspension was during a lock-out, so no one was playing.)
You should review the video explaining the long feud between Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche in the late 90's. The original hit and the resulting years of fights were brutal.
I've been checked into boards from 3 feet out. Blindsided me (men's league no checking) and smashed my head into the board and then it bounced off the ice. Tried to get up to fight him but couldn't even stand. Concussion. If it was against the boards it would not have hurt. If it had been middle ice, the impact would hurt but I wouldn't have hit the boards in the air. Definitely, the worst I've had.
you should watch the 1998 fight avalanche vs wings, was a whole ice brawl and the goalies even fought too! Is was a part of that rivalries in the late 90's or early 2000's
When I was about 15, I took a knock from a guy who tried to hit me but I saw it coming and moved…his knee went straight into my thigh and I was on crutches for the next 3 months. Didn’t break my leg, but gave my a contusion so bad my left thigh was black by the time I got to the hospital. I’ll never forget it. Bending my knee was impossible and I went through some excruciating physical therapy just to get my muscles back to normal.
" that could have broken his neck " yes... Yes it did. And the weight class between the 2 is pretty crazy, chara " guy who made the hit" is 6,9" 250 lbs and then Pacioretty, 6 foot 215 lbs. And after that hit they changed the glass in that area so it doesn't happen again.
The hit at 6:45 alltho dirty was accidental and that plexicgass design at that time was very flawed. Chara was a giant of a man and I would never say he was a dirty player, but obv he did go over the line few times in his career.
The thing is, if you have enough time to line a guy up like that, you have a bead on him, you're like a fighter pilot on ice and you know you have him... you also have a decision to make. If you have that much time, you can also decide if you're going to hit him in the head or not. If you are a worthless asshole of a human being, you might decide to hit him in the head. If you're a man, take the body, and expect to get it back. Then get up.
You should see a hit this year from Kegan kolesar against Buffalo this year, the clip is to short to make a video out of but I garentee you'll question everything you know about physics
Every Canadian knows that three to five feet from the boards is the danger zone if you hit them wrong and they connect with the boards and snap the head back it can be a career or life ending hit.
I was at the game when Dean McAmmond got clocked by Downie. He was unconscious for a while, and that was the beginning of the end of his NHL career. I hate Steve Downie to this day...
Getting hit against the boards hurts way less than the open ice hits, however, it's the ones where the guy is like 4 or 5 feet from the boards that can get dangerous
If you’re right up by the boards, yes they absorb a lot of the impact. If you get chucked into the boards…. Ouch. They can be unforgiving.

Claude is an agent now, and Moritz Seider is his client, he and Yzerman will discuss his next payday, pretty funny
There were lots of dirty hits in the 60s and 70s particularly. That adreneline is running high in these tough guys.
You literally have every single detail wrong.
Claude Lemieux, Ulf Samuelson, Raffi Torres, Tom Wilson, and Matt Cooke are on the all-time dirt squad.
I dislike wilson, but he is not close to the top 10 in the dirty group. He is way more tough than dirty.
The worst is the Malarchuk skate across the throat. That video clip has haunted me for nearly 30 years
Love your expressions. The tension radiating off you is as if your right there at the game. 🇨🇦
Pavel Barber's illegal hockey plays videos are hilarious. A lot of the hits in this video reminded me of them.
Morning I’m pissing myself laughing at your reactions! Definitely got a great video of hits although older most have since retired. My god when the stretcher around 9:37 tipped over I died the look on your face- priceless.. Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh, have a good day!
Claude Lemeuix, Cooke, And Dino Ciccarelli as Forwards
Samuelson and "I dont know (stevens was hard but clean), perhaps Odelein or Kasperatius/Marchment with the knees?"
Billy smith as G
Some of these happened in retaliation for other dirty hits.
6:50 it did break his neck actually, that was in 2011. he made a full recovery and is still playing in the nhl today
Canadians absolutely love hockey! We live for this.
Never been happy to see a hit to the head, with the singular exception of Matt Cooke being on the receiving end. Reaping the whirlwind.
At 6:56 he did actually break his neck. Absolutely disgusting play, I remember watching it live. The player never fully recovered and was never at the level he was before this hit. Sad
7:02 lol “he could’ve broken his neck there”… he did. His neck broke
The one at 6:31 where you said he coulda broke his neck, well he did broke his neck but came back the season after
Dude. For someone who hasn't watched much Hockey before, you seem to have a good natural understanding of what's going on.
Impressed.
Yep and I was at that game. It was terrifying watching Brashear lying there kind of convulsing while uncoscious. I can still see it in my head.
Cleats to an ankle via a slide tackle hurts briefly, but it won't cause a player to lose consciousness or be taken out on a stretcher with a neck brace to avoid spinal injury.
lmao your reaction to Modano being dropped on the stretcher , it really does seem like something out of a slapstick comedy
The boards are no longer wood. They are a steel framework with hard plastic covering them. Not much give at all to them.
The scariest hit are by far the ones that cause the player to lose consciousness. When they go down and don’t move my heart stops
THIS is why fighting is so important in hockey.
You need to check out Scott Stevens biggest hits...trust me on that you will love it
1:36 oh yes. It took a while, but Lemeiux got what he had coming.
Welcome to the Brutality of the NHL. It can make mixed Martial Arts look pretty tame.
Back a few years ago in high school hockey, I had the same thing happen to me as in the second clip. Got right back up though, played the rest of the game, and the next day I ended up having to go to hospital and was diagnosed with a major concussion:( was not fun lol
The dirtiest play in hockey I've ever seen was when a player named Happy Gilmore took his skate off and tried to stab another player with it
This is one part of the game that I’m happy they have almost gotten rid of!
Been knocked out a couple times from hits. Worst was a blindside elbow to the head and I was out for a couple minutes
I figured I'd see Dale Hunter in this video. He is one of the guys that you want off the ice but you would rather have on your favorite team. You should do a video on the best hip checks in hockey or the best open ice hits.
The first one was literally pre season and wilson got 20 game suspension for the hit... like holy fuck you throw a hit like that during PRE season xD
the 1:45 hit opened the floodgates to some of the best rivalry hockey we've ever had the joy of watching. As for Dirtiest hits, there were non more dirty than Scott Stevens
why is then in the Hall? Thats right! Because of clean hits
@@sst6601 Scott Stevens is well known for his dirty hits, you can be a smart ass all you like about it
@@HammerJammer81 I can be a smart ass. No problem. But you are a dumb ass. Or simply dumb
There's is an actual study and hockey players hit harder than NFL
It was 3-26-97 not 98 bud
6:31 I was at that game... not a good place to be a Bruins fan at the time...
The worst thing I seen was as a kid 1989 Clint Malarchuk neck was cut open by a skate and he was bleeding out on ice... was so scary
You should take a look at the Clint Malarchuk incident.
As I was told when I played hockey, keep your head up or you'll get your clock cleaned. Fortunately, I took this advice.
People used to play this game without helmets.
For a very long time there where men who played GOALIE without a mask or helmet.
You got it exactly right... You cannot hit somebody or check somebody if the puck is not around you
After the Pacioretty hit, the league was forced to redesign the partition at the end of the bench. It's now a round plexiglass turnbuckle.
I was at the game when Dean McAmmond got clocked by Downie. He was unconscious for a while, and that was the beginning of the end of his NHL career. I hate Steve Downie to this day...
