Lyrics:
Crawled away from me
Slipped away from me
Tried to keep a hold
But there was nothing I could say
Slid away from me
Crept away from me
Tried to keep you down
But there was nothin' I could say
What you try to say
Is you don't want to play
What you want
And what you need
Don't mean that much to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in
Crawled away from me
Slipped away from me
Tried to keep a hold
But there was nothin I could say
Slid away from me
Drift away from me
Tried to keep you down
But there was nothin I could say
What you tryin to say
Is you don't want to play
What you want
And what you need
Don't mean that much to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in
This is Love
This is love
This is my love for you
This is my love for you
This is my love for you
This is my love for you
This is my love for you
This is my love
Say you won't go
Get you in a stranglehold baby
Can you, can you get away?
What you tryin' to say
Is you don't want to play
What you want and what you need
Don't mean a fuck to me
I can see your back is turning
If I could I'd stick the knife in
Air drumming so hard on this i punched myself in the jaw .
LMAO. Funny
Righteous!
How long did it take you to recover from that and write this comment?
Cuz you need six more arms.
Not the first time then ey?
What a great voice of Maynard, matchless.
Superlative.

Undertow went 3× platinum recently...lateralus as well .10,000 days hit double platinum. Fear inoculum hit gold. Anima is 4× platinum...OPIATE is till just shy of double platinum!!
Insane
Opiate is probably one of the most successful EP
Ok, so Stephen those are all organic sales. All done by a solid, low publicity media, grass roots effort by this artist. What about it?
One more thing...I kicked heroin with nothing...it was pure hell , after a week I was losing my mind . My only escape from my own torment was tool with headphones it truly got me through it. Tool thank you guys you are all amazing
I let out a 9 second long squelching fart just now. It smells like a buttery grilled cheese sandwich slathered in hot sausage gravy.

Good analogy
I wished i had discovered Tool earlier in life so there would have been no need to do drugs and alcohol like i did....quit smack 20 years ago, kicked booze habit 6 years ago, life is still shitty but a lot more bearable with their music...i am in my 50's now and they make me headbang and play air guitar like i was 16 again...thank you,Tool
This is a great comment. I'm glad you were able to move past all of that garbage in your life. Be good!
I kinda attribute Tool to my opiod habit cause i discovered both about the same time.. I kinda feel like the majority of Tool fans are 2 things and thats musicians & Drug addicts.. I dont mean that in a bad way..

I always wondered wtf that was, where that came from
Meanwhile I thought there was just 20 seconds of silence in the beginning
Jo EL CHURQUINA If that’s true, that is amazing, regardless.
Always admire the work on bass that Paul D'amour did here and all the record
Alex Rojas Zúñiga love this album!!!!!!
Playing a Rickenbacker yeah? Sounds like one anyway!
This album and opiate has some of the most nasty and funky bass having said that chancellor is dope too!
For real
Absolutely based
First tool song i ever heard as a freshman in 1993. A friend said you have to listen to this. Popped it in my sony portable cd player and was instantly hooked. The rest is history
bro!! remember the jog-less ? haha wouldnt skip on the bus!
When tool was considered underground lol
I feel you I was heading into 7grade. Best thing ever
After nearly three decades of listening to this song I feel this is the perfect place to say, thank you.
Im with you on that one
Oops....i just gave away my age...
Lol
We're getting old and being a responsible adult sucks sometimes!
Also still listening big thanks never gets old
When I read this, I thought "There's no way this is thirty years old. Damn people and their internet exaggerations." Then I thought, "Wait, when did Undertow come out? Ohh no..." We really are getting old, aren't we? But at least we got to listen to some incredible music during our many years on this planet.
Been around since 92 still jamming 🔧 see you in another 20 some years 😂
My favorite Tool song. One of their heaviest.
Mine too. A completely underestimated masterpiece. And so it shall remain.
just discovered it and man its really good
This whole album is the beezneedsz
It still seems so fresh
because it is! be well my friend in TOOL !
@Scott Heslin you're a douchebag
Turn your piss into wine
That is what happens when a song is ahead of its time.
Hard to copy a band like Tool
Ive always considered this the best song on Undertow, so underrated. One of my Tool faves
Agreed Danny Carey drum solo is sick deff prolly top 3 fab songs of theirs...this album is perfect front to back...
Me too.
Underrated how? Amongst the Tool fans I've known, this is always in their top 5
nah, thats 4 degrees. but this is definitely underappreciated
Honestly, they're just all great. I couldn't ever pick a favorite.
As a 46 year old listening to this new album at the time was something so eerie...the sound, mood, down tuned guitars, non traditional metal voice...it was THE MISSING LINK in heavy music...I could go into heavier details about just how much TooL affected me as a teen in the 90s but it's a moment in time that just indescribable. You had to be there in there in 90s..it was and is the very BEST in heavy music . Sometimes I can smell it in the fall air, it's unmistakable.
Yeah man I hear ya it's crazy how ya put it but definitely agree
I was probably 9 or 10 when I first heard Tool in '92 or so. I've been hooked since. Wild to listen to a 30 year old song that could be put out today and be on top of the charts. It's timeless for those who appreciate quality
Funny how music can transport you to another time & place.
I always felt Maynards voice was different and couldn't quite figure out why even though its not right out in front like most bands or as traditional.....I came to the conclusion that it felt like a spiritual entity singing ...not a human ...but our inner soul inside us....he could be as soft and tender like an new innocent soul or as angry and destructive as an evil revengfull demon within us...no one I've ever heard can blend both while perfectly meshing with music that can sound like its from the pits of hell or as trippy and spiritual from a blissfull dimension
Actually, now that you brought up this angle... Tool digs deeper than Black Sabbath to find a deeper, down tuned guitar sound, here. This album when listened all the way through would make a Tool fan instantly on the strength of this track. I especially like the recorder being played to an indian tribal beat or something in the very beginning.
TOOL are one of the things I love most in my life. BEST. BAND. EVER.
BEST. BAND. TO. EVER. EXIST. IN. HISTORY.

Went to this concert in St. Louis back in '93, no opening act, Maynard and the boys tore it up for over 3hrs. I was deaf for 3 days!
Most under rated Tool song. The bass and drums are in perfect harmony. And Maynard's voice along with Adam's riffs are perfect as well.

My favorite Tool song. Paul D'Amour is an absolute beast on bass with this album.
Well said
This song is great for vocal training.
Am I the only person that thinks "Crawl Away" is in the top 3 Tool songs? Its friggin awesome instrumelltely and vocally. All Tool songs are, but I feel this one doesn't get enough respect. Thoughts?
Its definitely up there
The biggest problem is it's like they wanna hide this song. They have played it live 49 total times and all of those times were in the 90's. Even Undertow (the song) is underplayed live by far compared to any other Album title track.
Obviously not. Tool has 25 million fans. You think you're the only one?
@@liamx6636 Of course not. Just another member of the Tool Army. See you down in Arizona Bay. Hope you can swim.
Top3? ...maybe not so much... But I do think one thing is different from every other Tool song... Every other song pretty much follows Danny, but Paul is in pure attack-mode.
As much as I love Justin and feel it was a change for the better, Paul had /this/...and I don't know that Justin does. This was a different, unproven Tool
I still consider this the best tool album. And a lot of great tracks but this one is one of the best. Raw energy
I used to think Lateralus was the best but idk RN it's between this and Ænima weirdly
What a totally unrecognized masterpiece
One of their underrated songs, imho
That scream at the end gets me every time. It's too fucking beautiful
"NOW ITS TIME TO PAAAAAYYYYY!!!" Know your Enemy!
Fuck yea player
Yeah, buf the lyric is time has come to pay, though.
time has come to pay
I remember buying this album in 1993.... Blows my mind its almost 30 years old and still is as amazing as the first day..the best part is I can now sing along, unlike the first day!! haha
I still listen to this multiple times a week I’ve I’m 42 obviously I was listening to these guys back then being I felt this type of music affected me the most
This song gives me chills. It goes together perfectly. Probably my favorite Tool song
0:00 - 0:19 andine music from south america
Felipe Sanhueza it’s my favorite part of the song :)
This song is really fun to play on guitar.
This is the most rock and roll song of all rock and roll history.
Just started to learn this on guitar. Man I love tool! Favorite band ever. They have topped pink Floyd for me with the new album
My Uncle is massive Pink Floyd fan. And me too. I always tell him to listen to Tool and say they are like a modern day PF. It's really the only way I can explain them... As far as surpassing Pink... Tough one
@Boris Simeonov fuck that you must have gone tone deaf!
That's hella bold statement there but one I've also made
I often have that argument with my self who's better pink or tool pink came first but tool is so much more I still have argument with ones self over it
Undertow is such an underrated album of theirs. It may not have the production of the others but god damn is it good.
Dude this is easily the best production of any Tool album. Lean, tight, zero fat, no reverb, no delay, no overdubs, dry as a bone. No interludes, no electronics. Just badass metal, straight into the mics. You need to think again.
They may have written better songs later on, but this is their best ALBUM.
Sylvia Massy was the producer.
Idiot
Everything feels really tight and big. The low end is solid and the drums and guitars really cut through the mix ,Maynard sounds great.
One of the best albums ever made!!!!
It changed my relationship to music.
The short part beginning at 3:48 is strongly reminding of Led Zeppelin. Maybe of Whole Lotta Love or something..
Love how their influenced by Led Zep- one of my all time favorites.
Tool is the only Metal band I listen to and one of my favorites as well. Listen to them every day. 💚
Im 46 and tool has been with me for just about half my life and im a better person because of it.
And 2?
I’m 32 and have been listening to tool for 13/14 years I’m finally going to se them in London next may!!! Can’t fucking wait!
@@xaza5625 46 and Tool is a song by 2.
This music is timeless, to think it was made in the 90's
Yes it was, i been listening to them since then
My favorite Tool song - the first song of theirs I learned to play on my guitar when I picked it up to learn during Covid at age 57. Thanks to Amplitube I have Adam’s sound closely duplicated. So thrilling to play along with Danny, Paul and Maynard (sorry Adam, I mute your track when I play) freaking dream come to life. I would sh*t my pants to actually play with Danny live; for my money the best metal drummer bar none!
Thank you so much for all the inspiration over the decades boys!
THE BEST concert I've ever been to in my life TOOL GREAT LIVE
4 days and counting...If some untimely tragedy befalls me in that time I will be one hell of an angry ghost.
2 days...
0 days. Album was disappointing
This song is the template for the evolution of TOOL.
The chrysalis for what is Tool today
Don't know why this song was in my head today out of nowhere
Because it needed to be.
Took me 20 years and thousands of spins before I recognized the awesome homage to "Stranglehold" in the bridge part! They could've made this like one of their epic 10 minute+ masterpiece tracks they write now!🤘
I'm from Bolivia and it is the first time I listen to the beggining of this song!!! I love so much TOOL!!!!

Why is this one of the least played songs live all time by Tool? This beats so many of the songs they regularly play live by a lot. One of their best tracks. This song and Eulogy- hugely underrated.
To this day, Undertow is still one of my favorite albums by TOOL

Such grungy feel to the album..no wonder came out in 1993.. year of grunge..downtuned ..grungy dirty guitars..love it...
One of the things I love so much about this band is that the guitarist (Adam Jones) is one of the main focuses of the center of attention.
this album was overtime in the 90's!!!!
