I was at WM25. I was 9 but I remember the crowd going nuts for HBK v Taker and expecting the main event to be same level of excitement but it just wasn’t. I remember looking my brother and asking “is this the last match?” At the end of the show because it just left the crowd wanting more. It was so slow paced and goddamn long that it really didn’t do the whole feud justice

@@viktorriquelme3735 It did have a stipulation added during the event, if HHH got DQ'd or counted out he loses the title, a horrible stipulation for this particular feud.
Realistically it shoulda just been whatever variant of no DQ they could think of to allow Legacy, The McMahons and preferably a returning Batista all to interfere. HHH could still win which sets up the HHH/Batista/Shane vs Legacy at next PPV anyway where Orton goes on to win just as it did in our current time line. 1997 may forever be the one year where I can say I was the most excited as a wrestling fan. Both WCW and the World Wrestling Federation were offering compelling must-see TV week after week. Then came the double whammy of the Montreal Screwjob and the Sting/Hogan Starrcade main event. 25+ years later, we're still no closer to fully understanding how or why it all got so fucked up. At least WWE still had Austin (and later The Rock) to pick up the ball.

  • @press_x_tojason

The most painful thing about the Hogan vs Sting feud ending so poorly is that they had ALREADY done the ending right... with Lex Luger. And then took the title off him by the end of the week, putting it back on Hogan, just because. But that title match on Nitro was perfect.
Hogan is overly cocky, knowing the NWO is behind him, and, if the match turns bad for him, they can run in and cause a DQ, as usual, and they can beat down Luger, and all that actually changes is WCW loses morale. GREAT PLAN for the NWO. But Luger starts beating Hogan up, and he bravely endures Hogan's offense before heating up. The NWO lackeys swarm in, pretty much the whole organization, and they rush Luger... but he takes them all out, one by one. But there's no bell, no DQ. And Luger goes right back after Hogan, puts him in the torture rack, and makes him submit.
Maybe the biggest pop I've seen for a TV match, next to Mankind winning the WWF title at the start of 1999, coincidentally another night where WCW shot themselves in the foot.
And even better, you can make Starrcade 97 work by inverting it a bit, having Luger hold off the onslaught of NWO lackeys trying to stop Sting for beating Hogan, rather than resorting to the "was it a fast 3 count?" BS that killed most of the heat for the angle.

Of course, part of the entire thing, I imagine would be fixing the end of the number one match on this list.

Too many things collided in the Sting/Hogan match. Sting was apparently dealing with ring rust due to his excessive time away to make his gimmick work and was out of shape due to personal problems, Hogan was trying to save face as usual, and WCW was "inspired" by the Montreal Screwjob (which had only happened the previous month) to make that Bret Hart's major first contribution to the product.
I get some of it and don't get others but either way they were trying way too hard to overbook that match when most of the story was already written going in.

Daniel Bryan vs the authority initial feud was great…….till they screwed it up at hell in a cell with Shawn betraying Bryan.
Not only did we not get the Bryan vs Shawn feud but Wwe as we all know tried to drop it and make Bryan a heel with the Wyatt’s until the fans forced the issue.

They replaced him with The Big Show, insert John Cena and the Big Gold Belt for a unification match, pretended Bryan didn't do big in the feud, and planned to have Batista as the one to end Orton's reign at Mania 30???
What kind of 🚬 were management smoking during those months to ignore until the risk became too high and many would've quit WWE and not even subscribe to the Network when it got launched in February (?) of 2014.

Have the authority screw Bryan constantly. Make it clear he won’t get another shot at the title. Bryan wins the rumble guaranteeing he gets a shot. The authority does all in its power to weaken and/or injure Bryan. He overcomes the odds, wins at mania, and the fans give their money to see it.

Having this come out instantly after Elimination Chamber which has a semi unsatisfying end to a feud is very weird timing despite me knowing these are recorded well in advance.
Edit: Allow me to clarify. I don’t mean unsatisfying as in “This March sucks because Sami didn’t win.” I mean unsatisfying from a “story wise, Sami should win.” Personally, I love wrestling when storylines work and close wonderful and while I don’t hate the way it ended by any means, I feel like Sami/Roman should’ve been the Mania match and Sami win there. For me, it’s just a personal feeling of “this Bloodline stuff would end beautifully like this” which is definitely a me thing rather then a “I hate what is happening” thing. That’s why I said semi unsatisfying due to my personal feelings. I don’t doubt that Cody vs Roman is a better draw, it’s just that from a story perspective I feel like Sami vs Roman would’ve been an amazing send off to the Bloodline stuff after, what, the past 8 months?

    • @donazard8884
