Honorable mentions:
- Edge vs Kurt Angle (2002)
- Edge vs Chris Benoit (2005)
- Rob Van Dam vs Shelton Benjamin (2006)
- Batista vs Undertaker (2007)
- Health Slater & Rhyno vs The Usos (2016)
- AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose (2016)
- Bobby Lashley vs Drew McIntyre vs Braun Strowman (2021)
- Roman Reigns vs Cesaro (2021)
If that is rvd vs shelton for the winer take all i highly agree
I would add Melina vs Mickie James from Backlash 2007. That match was fantastic with some awesome moments.
Orton vs Edge (2020)
I'd add Dolph Ziggler Vs. The Miz from 2016. Though to be fair, they'd top it a month later at No Mercy.
@@dylanogg347 was the no mercy match the title vs career? That story was amazing. Lots of rumours about Dolph wanting to focus more on his comedy too so I thought this was their way of writing him off TV, then he won. The Miz is my fav IC champion ever, made that title feel so important
The Backlash 2007 main event was so damn good. By far my favorite finish to a Fatal 4 Way match. The way they all kept reversing each other’s finishers until eventually they all ate a finisher one after the other with an exhausted Shawn superkicking Cena onto Orton was a chef’s kiss
Being there live, many in the crowd didn't even realize Cena fell on someone for the pin until the bell rung. I remember everyone slowly realizing what happend. The whole show was awesome!
That finish to Cena-Orton-Edge-Michaels has to be the best one EVER
You're right Adam. A lot of WWEs product names do sound like they're made up by an algorithm more so than a person.
Reigns vs Cesaro from last year deserved at least a honorable mention. Really deserved to take place in front of a live crowd
tbf he did say no matches without a crowd
@@LordWay which is honestly bs. Imagine making a list of best matches at Night of Champions / Clash of Champions and not including Reigns vs Uso
@@sharjeelahmed7913 didn't watch either tbh so can't really discuss
@@LordWay watch it, they are wonderful.
Match was boring as hell
The fact that Backlash 99 has a match on this list made me happy, the fact that the boiler room brawl almost made it, phenomenal! That was my first PPV I saw after falling out of wrestling and it made me the Foley mark I am today
I remember Batista and Undertaker having a great Last Man Standing match in 2007, though I'm guessing the finish kept it off this list. I also remember Edge and Angle having a great match, but I'm unsure if it was at Backlash or Judgment Day.
Can't wait for the worst list! 2018 will probably take up all ten spots lol
Both.
@@lightning116 Ah that's right! JD had the hair-shaving stipulation. It's all coming back lol
I was at 07 and yeah, that Batista and Taker match was freaking awesome. I can't remember if it was a double countout or someone got up, but I feel like it was a double countout when they went off the stage and it collapsed. I remember the spot being good but something about the finish dampened it (only slightly) for the crowd. It was a great show. Only PPV I've been to, but lots of house shows and TV. Backlash 07 and the first ever Friday Night Smackdown with Eddie v Rey in a cage, LoD v MnM for tag titles, and Batista v JBL for world title in a bullrope match were the two best shows of WCW, WWE, and TNA shows that I've been to.
yeah tbh i can’t believe the fatal 4 way from backlash 07 made the list but batista and taker didn’t. it wasn’t better than their wrestlemania match but the finish was definitely a highlight of the night
Adam doesn't like last man standing matches probably why
Genuinely the beef parade with Lashley, McIntyre and Strowman was amazing. Then to have Reigns and Cesar’s in a good match while Roman taunts the camera is great
The lack of crowd likely made Adam disregard anything from that Backlash.
Reigns ' taunting Bryan is brilliant. "Like DB style, Like DB style."
I was at 07 in Atlanta. And that match was legit awesome. Everyone was confused at the end though cause everyone popped when HBK chin musiced Cena, but not everyone realized Cena fell on someone for the pin. It was great. And after the show went off the air, Edge literally hit like 12 spears on Orton lol it was 20 mins of spear, be mad, spear, taunt, spear, yell, false spear, spear, etc lol
I was in the crowd at Backlash 2000 and Austin coming out is probably my favorite wrestling memory
I love that you guys aren't afraid to mention Benoit matches while also acknowledging why others don't. I think that is the right balance for his stuff
2000 Backlash was excellent overall. Apart from that cathartic main event and the Malenko vs. Scotty sleeper, both tag matches were very entertaining, Benoit/Jericho was great, the Hardcore match was enjoyably chaotic, and Big Show's impersonation of Hulk Hogan was hilarious and spot on!
Lies again? Best Asian Cock No Ireland
Damn, it says something about the quality of Backlash when the 2016 version, which is Top 5 easily, doesn't even have one match on this list.
Edge and Cena sure love facing each other at Backlash.
How there was no riot when HBK put Benoit in the Sharpshooter hold durig the '04 Backlash main event, I'll never know...
One minor detail - the Michaels/HHH/Benoit match didn’t happen in Montreal. It happened in Edmonton which is on the other side of the country.
I was lucky enough to be at this one! This was a fantastic show.
It was. And the Foley/Orton match was where I first had respect for Randy.
*I Really love Adam’s unbiased yet spot tf on reviews. That Benoit/Angle match at Backlash 01’ was amazing* 👏🏽
Rhyno vs Raven at Backlash 2001 is one of the best hardcore matches ever.
McIntyre/Strowman/Lashley from last year's WrestleMania Backlash was so much fun despite it being in the ThunderDome era, just three big meaty men slapping meat!
Backlash 2004 was in Edmonton Alberta, not Montreal. But Alberta is Hart territory so of course they're going to boo Micheals out of the building
Edmonton was where Benoit grew up. We didn't need anymore reason to boo Michaels out the arena.
Was about to say "Why isn't Sheamus/Bryan in the 'Matched that should have happened at Mania' trilogy" until I reminded myself that happened during the stretch of time where Extreme Rules happened after Mania, lol
You're right Adam, there is a good reason why people don't talk about Angle v Benoit at Backlash 2001. Because there match at Royal Rumble 2003 overshadows it.
You forgot Shelton Benjamin vs. Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship, in 2005. It was an opening match that literally set the tone for this great PPV.
Obscure reference to The Terror at 0:50 aside, that Fatal Four Way is insanely good.
I liked the visual imagery they used to use for Backlash with the swinging blades....it's really simple....someone got cut but the blade is coming back to cut you. Really neat theme.
Backlash always seems to have good Triple Threats, Fatal-4-Ways, and Last Man Standing matches.
3:01 That was the moment I truly became a fan of Shane McMahon. The son of the boss, never had to do crazy stunts like that, but did them anyway. Respect
The absolute disrespect from Adam to Ron Howard by just calling him the "arrested development narrator" has finally cemented him as wrestletalk's top heel to me.
Honorable mention to part IV of matches that should've been done at Mania: Chris Jericho vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.
That match should be an honorable mention to this list. Basic wrestling storytelling from two all time pros and seeing steamboat go is amazing.
I also really liked JBL vs Cena vs Orton vs HHH from '08
Honourable mention: Cesaro vs Reigns
it’s funny that the intro could be the name of a saudi ppv next year
Shane's jump at Backlash 2001 was my most watched VHS moment for wrestling. It was such a high fall for the time and Test was great fun in it too. Its not a great match compared to the ones I would love as I got older, but its still such a shock.
Thank you Adam for having excellent opinions! Seriously though anything you put out is A+ 10/10! 🤘🏻
Mick Foley regards the Backlash match with Randy as maybe the best match of his career.
ROFL, that moment "I also like wrestling when Shane jumps off really high things" really got me. Like, my tummy hurts from that guffaw LOL
Honestly from this list, I feel like a 10 Craziest Shane McMahon Bumps would be a fun watch
There have been some stinkers throughout the event's history, but with the amount of honorable mentions/alternative picks you could bring up, Backlash has definitely earned its spot in wrestling archives perhaps more than any other B-ppv
Great list, another great match from Backlash 2001 is Raven vs Rhyno, the Dean Malenko vs Scotty 2 Hotty of the Hardcore Championship
I have a few differences in my personal favourites from Backlash. Taker vs Batista, Angle Vs Edge, the women's triple threat last year. Backlash tends to always have at least one standout match on the card, if not 2-3.
Surprised Styles vs Ambrose didn't make the list. Very underrated match.
A moment of silence for the
“Swinging Backlash Set”
I'm glad I'm already subbed, I don't wanna make Ollie sad. He's one of my favorites along with Adam
If there ever was a vocation or a calling in life it's top 10 list for Adam. I know he might not want to hear that but he truly is the best at them. I go back and listen to his what culture ones all the time the wrestling ones and the ones about movies and different stuff. I'm glad hes back at it it sucked he was gone for a while.
I'm from Italy, and hearing Adam name one of my favourite recipes made me very happy... Ravioli 4 Life. (if you ever come to Italy and you're not allergic, you gotta try ravioli with walnut sauce: excellent). Besides, I would have put Orton vs Jack at number one.
I take your point about Orton vs Cactus Jack being the match they should have had at Mania, but the actual Mania match of Evolution vs Rock & Sock was actually a lot of fun. So I'm glad it happened the way it did.
The pinfall in the Rock/Hunter match is to this day the loudest 3-count ever. Gives me goosebumps ever. single. time.
Rock vs Triple H at Backlash 2000 is the match that got me into wrestling because it happened in my hometown and the Sports segment on the news covered it the Next day and that's how I got into wrestling.
Aww, I was hoping Undertaker vs Edge 2008 was going to be on here.
Backlash 2000 is one pay per view I hold near and dear to my heart, I watched it live and recorded it on VHS
I’m so glad someone finally brought up the triple threat with Cena, Edge and HHH from 02. That’s one of the best triple threat matches of all time. Only ones better to me is Angle/Rock/Taker from vengeance 02 and Michaels/Benoit/HHH from Mania 20.
Bad Bunny vs Damian Priest should probably be on the list now. Heck, Iyo Sky vs Bianca Belair is probably knocking on the door.
Now that's, quite a great number one on this list
HBK wearing the same attire in Montreal from the screw job is hilarious 😂
This was a very good list
Amazing list (would've put Cactus vs Orton at 1 tho)
“If you don’t subscribe Ollie will be sad”
That’s a damn fine argument for unsubscribing.
>Showing love to 2001
Justice has been served. Such an underrated show. I was worried Angle/Benoit wouldn’t be mentioned because, well, REASONS. But I’m glad it was
There is another reason that isn't the partecipant other than Kurt, and that's the crowd reaction. This match didn't have a clock or a scoreboard on the TitanTron, which confused the fans, and made sure that future Ultimate Submission matches would have it.
@@tafua_a And it's very odd that they didn't for Backlash 01 considering Judgement Day the previous year had a clock for the HHH-Rock iron man match.
That moment when you click a PartsFunknown video and realise Adam is narrating it. 😊
Randy is Mr Backlash 2004 against mick , 2009 against triple h, 2016 against Bray Wyatt tricking him to rko , 2017 against Jinder with shocking result, 2018 against Jeff Hardy, 2020 against edge
U forget Taker Vs Batista 2007 Backlash
Backlash 2000 was my first ever live wrestling event I ever attended. That night was crazy. Definitely to date the loudest crowd I was ever in
That Edge-Cena match was like Luthor (in armor) fighting Superman then Doomsday shows up.
good video
Next lists suggestions:
10 AEW Stars who should consider joining/returning to WWE
10 beat rising stars of 2022
Randy and Edge should've made the list. I don't care that the piped in crowd ruins it, it was a great match.
Even though WWE made a mistake with the main event of WM 2000, boy did they make up for it with the main event of Backlash. That whole storyline of The Rock/McMahon-Helmsley Faction had me glued to the TV for those episodes of Raw & SmackDown, and the Backlash finish was the perfect cathartic release.
It’s fun when you start watching another 10 and say to yourself, this one is gonna be nr.1 and than it is nr.1!
Edge vs Orton 2020 has to be on here. The match as a pure wrestling match is much better than Foley Orton.
Pre-thumb Shane McMahon! You wilding, Adam! 😂😂😂😂
Rock vs. HHH is maybe the most underrated match in history. In the heart of the attitude era, you had all of the biggest players involved, Austin, HHH, Rock, the McMahons were used perfectly, Patterson & Briscoe were used perfectly, Rock & HHH had a great great match, beautiful back & forth wrestling, the crowd was super hot, Austins pop was IMO bigger than the one he got on Raw in 99, this was wrestling perfection.
Anyone gonna point out that Backlash 04 was from Edmonton, not Montreal?
hear me out ..wwe presents “LashBack!” Where Bobby never loses
Taker be Batista 07 was amazing as well! The damn stage imploded!
How dare you Adam not put the greatest match of all time on this list.
The match wasn't awful but imo, I just roll my eyes at how WWE over-hyped the whole thing as "the greatest wrestling match ever."
@@joetheman8550 there’s a part of me that hopes WWE only overhyped that match as a joke to make people laugh.
I was just thinking they should do the best Backlash matches. Im surprise Taker and Batista wasn’t a honorable mention tho
Backlash has always been the Opening day of Sports entertainment and it is phenomenal
Some really good matches, too bad Joey Styles wasn’t good enough to call any of them
Backlash 2000 gets bonus points for being shown on channel 4 in the UK
Yeah the Rock vs. HHH match at Backlash should've definitely been at Mania. Imagine how crazy the pop would've been at Mania with Austin returning and Rock winning the title.
Well I think we can all thank Trips for that. His insecurities and jealousy of the Rock wouldn't allow him to do the job at the biggest show of the year.
Man The Rock and Triple H to me has to be number 1 like yes they should’ve had that one on one at WrestleMania 16 but this right here made the moment all the more special with Stone Cold’s return🔥🔥💯
Speaking of matches from Backlash that were better than the Wrestlemania match, that was definitely the case with Ronda & Charlotte Flair this time around.

I remember watching Backlash 06 and wanting anyone but Cena to win and Shawn to beat the Mcmahon's what a disappointing night for teenage me.
You should do Top Feuds/Rivals of John Cena, I would put Punk over both Edge & Orton.
Raven vs Rhyno at Backlash 2001 is a good hardcore match.
I love Adam Blampied
Okay for my favourite match it's basically Orton vs mahal now before anyone disses me I know it's not that good but my reasons are
1) I watched it live
2) the end shocked everyone in my corner including me we were all truly sports entertained that night
I swear if Big Show Vs Kurt Angle 2000 should be on this list, it should be #1!!
Sorry to correct you there but Backlash 2004 wasnt in Montreal, it was in Edmonton, Alberta Canada (Chris Benoit's hometown at the time)
I was there and couldn't talk for days after Backlash 2000.
I was at the Vince vs God Backlash PPV and man the Cena HHH Edge triple threat was a great match and being a jaded teenager who loved Edge and HHH at the time while also hating Cena I cheered every time either heel did anything and booed whenever Cena did 😂

Backlash was a good WM aftermath event, where either there's a rematch that can add a tweak or start a new feud for the following months of the year towards the Summertime.
Chris Benoit seems to be a common denominator. 😆
Randy Orton vs Edge of course 👌
After watching Dean Malenko in WCW and ECW, I don't understand why he was wasted.. He was a better promo than Benoit and had a dry wit that made him a good foil to Jericho. He was the best wrestler out of all the Radicals, didn't do drugs or get in trouble. They even hired him as an agent and he made a lot of nonsense work behind the scenes cause he took to WWE style so quickly. He wasn't even boring like his matches with in ECW with Eddie are great, his cruiser weight run in WCW is great like he was entertaining I just don't understand. Everything I've heard people say to explain it isn't true except he wasn't a total cartoon.
