Elton and Taupin, ... on the radio in the 1970s, 1980s, ...a new hit after hit after hit, year after year after year. From "Your Song" to songs like "Sacrifice", Elton John this guy even took The Beatles hit, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," and The Who's, "Pinball Wizard" making them his own and even bigger hits on the radio than they ever were with The Beatles and The Who. As far as music sales, I think only The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Elvis have outsold Elton John.
@@barbaracaroll me too. Sometimes I wonder why but I was 15 when it comes out, which I’m sure plays a part, but I’m 63 and when one of these songs comes out of the past, I start smiling, singing and dancing. A few songs may be a little odd, but others are stunningly beautiful and something special about each one! Who cannot like “Yell Help” or the “Robert Ford” song???
miss that falsetto from the 70s...it hooked me as a kid on songs like tiny dancer ,rocket man etc etc...he changed to a falsetto in the chorus and was so smooth
I wonder how many of you know A. what type of young woman; ... B. living in what city this song was about??? Some of you do, but I bet tons of you guys and gals under age 40 do not.
Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson do a better job on this song and give it a deeper and more funky sound than those horrid ring-in’s Kenny Passarelli and Roger Pope whom Elton replaced Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson with in 1975 when he sacked them.
in 1984, when this video was taken, Elton was on an exhaustive tour. The voice is bound to become worn. In addition to this, '84 saw the first, fleeting signs of voice problems that would become painfully obvious in 1986 (see his tour with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). In early 1987, he would undergo surgery to remove benign nodules from his vocal chords. The surgery restored his voice for about 15 years, though it did cost him the use of most of his famed falsetto (the upper register of his voice). While voice problems such as this are common in performers, Elton's problems were made worse by his rampant drug use at the time.
It's odd now how we can go back and listen to performances from 84-85 and you can hear that something is already wrong. It's really too bad because the way his voice was from 76-82 was really something. He had a lot more power than in his early days. Would love to hear what he would sound like now if not for the problems he has had.
He'd probably sound fairly similar. Remember that Elton is 70 years old now, and exhaustive touring takes its toll on even the youngest, healthiest of voices. Anne Murray spoke about this when she decided to retire from singing in her early 60s. She said she'd rather go out when she still sounded good rather than letting people watch her talent fade away with age. Elton has also never really anything to warm his voice up or preserve it for shows, which doesn't help him at all. I doubt he'd have much in the way of the falsetto (upper) range he used to great effect in the '70s now.
cees541 It’s live and it’s rock n roll. His voice doesn’t have to sound pristine playing live. He seems to be hitting his upper register notes here just fine. A bit raw, which adds to a song like this.
It sounds slightly worn/rough - but this was the last date of the Oceania tour from 1984. No major issues here. He sounds loads better on the version a month later (Stockholm) where his tone is cleaner.
I've just realised that this song is actually pretty racist. Edit: I'm not saying it's a bad song, I'm just saying he wouldn't be able to write it now.
This song is the latest definition of racist. The Paranah might as well tear into eltin jon while they are on their cultural appropriation journey. Really Eelton? White man's world? How dare you?
It is a white man's world always been and always will be that's why everybody else is always offensive because they have an inferiority complex. Think about this who feels offended when someone says something that you think is offensive it's always females or none white males Because deep down inside they know that true I am a white male you can bash me with any song it don't bother me at all because I know my Race is number 1.
Reginald Dwight is one of the best singer/ songwriter ever!!!!!!!!!! Phantastic!!!!!!!!!!! I love him forever!!!!!!!
The 70s and 80s were dominated by this legend 👑
Phil Collins, too.
Queen too

Great song ....Great performance .... !!!!
What a joyful song! And the message is hard-core for the day. Go Elton.
Elton John does it again island girl what a great song I think it's shot up to number one in America.
Dee Murray really rocking here. RIP Dee
Cancer is a disgusting disease! RIP Dee Murray you'll be missed
Top 5 bassists of all time no doubt. He wrote a ton of his own lines for Elton’s music and performed brilliantly
@@flyboieblair6636 he wrote EVERY bass part he did for Elton, not just some.
What a rare gem! A true delight to watch and listen to. Thank you

When I was a kid traveling to & from Florida to Nc. loved this & crocodile rock.
Everyone loves those lyrics!
Elton's best band, imo! Dave, dee and nigel plus extra keyboardist!
Pure pop genius.
Yessss Elton superb ❤️
LOVE ELTON JOHN HES MY BIRTHDAY TWIN MARCH 25 ❤️💓❣️
Love all the new uploads.
I was at one of his concerts in Sydney on that tour ( not sure if it was this exact one ) it was amazing as always awesome band ❤❤❤
Favorite ko si elton pero di ko alam itong song na ito
Wonderful
I love that you're uploading shows at 60 fps, I love watching them like that! :) You rock!
Great version, EJ's best band.
I dont blame Davey for messing up on the solo. They were speeding on this song!
Island Girl sounds better with this band (his original) than the band he wrote the song with on ROTW.
No way. Also, Caleb and Roger were with Elton before this band.
1984 I saw Elton John in Zurich (Switzerland). But sadly he didn't play that song.
Davey rockin some Hammer pants in 84……Oh … Dee on Bass …wow ….
NEVER disband !
Gotta love Fred Mandel on that Yamaha Synth. Good mix, having him out front, but it does kinda detract from the rest of the group.
Before he had His Voice Change.

2:10 did Dee get his hair permed and Davey has curly hair too. LOL great rendition.

im 15 and well aware
Sounds fast.
I like all kinds of music but I must admit that Sir Elton has no match in modern music.
Nigel isnt playing the drums right plus it's too fast.
In the early 80s I was driving a 69 el Camino playing this tune...I was banging a 105 5'2 girl, man I miss that car
David Schaefer she supposed to be a big girl standin about 6’3. 🤷♂️
Dave Rucci lmao
Waaaaaayyyyy too fast
Ya- why did he mess with the tempo?
He was in the midst of his coke addiction
This is around the time he married Renate.
the drummer aint doing the hi hat thing.
Good catch. I thought something sounded off. That’s a huge part of the song imo
That part was an studio overdub by Ray Cooper.
Nigel olsen sucks.
@@rickharris1709 Somehow I don’t think Elton John agrees. His singing, musical ability and subtle drumming suits the music.
Too much coke!!!!!!! waaay too fast!!!!!!
OK but he is very good
Lol big time
No one listens to the lyrics…

Jacob Reeves guitarist is the only original studio musician here? I forgot his name...
@@DaveRucci the great Davey Johnstone
I think it's a good version but be honest the live versions from 76 are way better (with Roger and Kenny)
what is wrong with his voice??????????????
