Dear Claudio This vid reminds me of my youth 46 years ago. My brother gave me a Roland SH-2 back then. Then I was so hooked on synthesizers that I went to work every free time to buy synths; the Odyssey and then the sequencer... then the 2600, System 100 and then the DX7. Unfortunately I sold almost everything together and stopped to make music. I gave the Odyssey and the sequencer to a friend as a gift. What I find totally fascinating are the phase shifts of the oscillators and the unique fat bass sound. But the filters and cutoff can also be killers for the speakers... which is how I killed my Yamaha monitors with the Odyssey..I always find that Kraftwerk worked with ARP sounds in the early days...And when Tony Banks plays on the Quadra, I logically see the Odyssey in it...Typical ARP! In any case, I got chicken skin and tears in my eyes to see and hear you play!!! THX for the trip down in my memory lane🙏💪👍👍👍👍👍💚
Seriously, do an album man!!! You and Mr. Marinelli, couple other friends maybe... it would be pure synth GOLD! Oh, and pressed on special red vinyl ;) Doctor Mix: the Clinical Trials
The ARP oscillators really have a distinct sound. I got a 2600M last year and have gotten my ears a lot more tuned into recognizing it on records. The Odyssey has many of the same sonic characteristics; love it!
They really do! They have a certain top-end clarity that things like Moogs didn't have, and yet they were still sweeter than later Japanese monosynths from KORG, Roland, and Yamaha.
I stumbled across your channel about a year ago whilst researching the Hydrasynth and im so glad i subscribed because your love of synthesizers and musical history has kept me coming back for more each time. Claudio, you are awesome my friend 😉👍
I had the OG MkII back in college and, being in college, sold it for many times what I paid for it. But missed it ever since! So I am extremely pleased I was able to get a good deal on the Korg MkII reissue. They did such a superb job with it; absolutely brings back the magic of the original!
Nice demo, Doctor.!!! I have a Behringer Odyssey, and they did a great job of reproducing it. Nice extras on it, and much more road worthy. Much more of a learning curve on it than my Minimoog, though. Of course, it was to be expected because ARP was in direct competition with Moog and wanted to be different as possible with their synths, right down to encapsulation of their modules in epoxy...(paranoid of someone copying their designs).
For one glorious summer back in the 1980s, I had an ARP Odyssey on loan, a Mark II, and it was a wonderful summer! I loved detuning the two oscillators from each other for a really phat sound. Nice to see one of your episodes devoted to the Odyssey!
I always think of the great Billy Currie of Ultravox when talking about the ARP Odyssey. Dave Formula of Magazine and Visage also got some amazing sounds out of it. Simple yet powerful not unlike the Minimoog but with a very different character.
I like the way you switched from mapping out the Odyssey’s features to launch into the 3 jams. Also, the neatest part is when you paired it up with the Minimoog. I’ve owned 2 ARP synthesizers since I was 20 in 2000, an Axxe Mk II and a Korg Odyssey duplicate. I’ve enjoyed the Odyssey clone more by far than I enjoyed the Axxe, not on.y for the second oscillator and all its tone-shaping possibilities. This one hasn’t got that dopey, protruding keyboard on the Mark III version of the ARP product line. That made the Axxe a sheer headache during the 6 1/2 years it was in my possession (during which the highest A never worked right).
You're absolutely right, which is why I saved up every bit of money as a boy so I could buy the Odyssey. What mine did after 2 or more hours of being turned on was almost unbelievable....such smooth, silky sounds....I'm an idiot: I gave my Odyssey along with the sequencer to a friend....What he did with it I still don't know to this day....MY OWN FAULT!!!
Awesome stuff. The Oddy is a wonderful synth. Very playable, great sound. I have the B oddy and it’s great. I used to have an original on a long term loan from my brother in law. I just love them. I also have B’s 2600. That one is more challenging to use. Eta: that last tune sounded very JMJ. Which is a good thing.
This has been my dream synth since I was a star-struck 15 year old watching Billie Currie wringing an Odyssey’s neck on the Ultravox Rage in Eden tour. Someday I’ll own one. Someday.
I recently watched a video with Herbie Hancock where he discusses the Odyssey bass in Chameleon. He initially recorded a MiniMoog then decided to record it again using the ARP. He wanted to pan each bass recorded left and right, no one was sure if it would sound right but he said it worked fantastic but due to recording track limitations at the time went with the Odyssey and released it in '72. He said they also re-recorded the panned bass but didn't say if they released it or not.
Hi Claudio, saluti dalla Sardegna! A few days ago I casually stumbled across your channel and discovered so many things about synths and many other things about music gear. You have my subscription and a lot of kudos for your videos so imbued with genuine energy and passion! I was wondering if in the future you are going to review some new synths like the Arturia Polybrute 12 and the Moog Muse...
Cheers mate, love a bit of Dr. Mix! Needed cheering up, I've got work tomorrow 😁😁 BTW, I'm absolutely getting an RC505 after seeing this. Good job I work then!
Great, love to see you making music, you know the odyssey is duophon so you can play intervals and the real shit is happening when adding the ring modulator, this is outstanding like no other, by the way the odyssei by apple got up to 8 voices of you need chords and an appregiator plus effects... @@filippobuccianelli4606 Therefore I wrote "it seems". What I like is not only the sound but also the UI. You exactly know which parameter/modifier is currently set. And that´s really great 😉
@@ingolf7411 well, what you say it’s true, but as the mini Moog became the “standard” UI, the Ody can be tricky for many, especially in the (not common) modulation compartment. Let’s say if you do basic things it’s quite easy, but if you wanna go deep you can… then take a picture!😁
Hi Claudio is it Odyssey or Odissey? Sometimes these synths have ‘amended’ names. ❤lovin the channe and esp loved the Melbourne Delia vid. Looks like great value at just over £2k - I’ll never be able to afford that but for serious synth users it looks great when compared to Moog and the like.
Please search for the song "Grass For Blades" 1976 live, by prog rock band Wigwam. It shows ARP Odyssey in full flight at the time when it was fairly a fresh thing. :)
Still a really cool synth, especially as it was my first one (naja, the Behringer clone...). Do you know the Dutch trio The Keyboard Circle? It consisted of 2 keyboard players (Rob Franken & Jan Huydts) , both with a Rhodes and ARP ODYSSEY, with Henk Zomer on drums. They made a kind of funky jazz in the 1970s, in 2008, the recordings of a live concert were found and released as the album "1976", I can recommend to listen it! In between the songs, you sometimes hear them tune the Odysseys. They were also the reason I decided to buy an Odyssey as my first synth, during Covid, as an extension to my Rhodes. BTW: what would you think about an Odyssey vs. MiniMoog video?
This synth was also famously used by ABBA as the lead in Gimme Gimme Gimme, Elton John used it in Rocketman and Peter Howell used it in the Doctor Who Theme.

Notice how timeless and clear the interface is designed. If somebody told me it was 2024 or 2000, I wouldn't have any doubts.

Get the Behringer Odyssey when they have it on special it is a great recreation at an unbeatable price.

you can make anything sound melodic
My fav, i got the ARP, an Asm Hydrasynth and now is coming a Korg Ms-20 Mini. Lot of fun with this one particularly
Nice one. I love how the Odyssey sounds much like Billy Currie's Odyssey in the solo at the end of Ultravox' "The voice" at Hammersmith Odeon 1982. :)
The last improvisation reminds me of the first experimental works of the maestro Franco Battiato. Great work Doctor!!
The effect at 2:35 reminds me of the beginning of Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio."
I'm on a Mexican radio 🎵🎶🥁🎵🎶🥁
I always know I will have fun watching a Dr. Mix video. Great jam at the end!
Take a look into some of the Ultravox tracks and see how Billy Currie uses it, live or studio - stunning work!
I have had the Module Rev 1 since 2019 and I don’t regret its purchase
- Mighty cool jam !
"Keeps me wondering why" by Steve Miller band is my go-to song of reference for the ARP Odyssey.
My absolute favorite synth. Love your jamming on it.
Great stuff here Doctor Mix! 🎹😎🔥
ThaT JAM!! Someones been practicing!
That Odyssey is lucky to have you! 😊
17:42 "New Life" (Dépèche Mode) vibes. Love it!
Just excellent!!!
Toured with a B3, a Korg MS10, and an Odyssey. Thanks for the memories. 🤣
My first synth 👍👍
You have just demystified some of the lead tones on the Equinox album for me. Thank you very much.👌✌️❤️
ARP ODDYSSEY!!!!!!!!!! YEAH BABY!!!
Cool synth solo…and beat..nice demonstration of technology..modern and vintage and of course fx.
For me personally, the King of the Odyssey was the legendary Billy Currie from Ultravox... brilliant sounds he created from it!!!!

Esse cara se quisesse poderia ser um ótimo músico de Dance Music.Manja muito!
Brilliant as always.
That looks cool next to the khaos pad
Glad to hear your width modulation slider has the same distinct ARP noise dust as most of the sliders on my old Axxe :-)

"Odissey" is spelt wrong in your title. It may not show up in internet searches as a result. We can't have that, can we ? Love your work !
