@AlexBallMusic
Alex does it right.
I love that the original oldschool ARP Odyssey's manual has a dedicated section in it, telling you to not "set the sliders like an organ, and only play the keyboard" but instead ENCOURAGES the user to play the sliders as part of performing with the instrument.
Thankyou ARP/Alan Pearlman for 50 years of musical knob/slider twiddling , by design !
Alex is a real treasure!
yes. just. yes. Great choice having Alex make this video. Fantastic Synth. and great demo
AB harvests more varied sounds, out of more varied synths, than ANY-one! Bravo Alex and well done ARP these 50 years on.
Alex Ball - the perfect person to demonstrate this beast. I recall Billy Currie making a comment along the lines that he’d seen the MiniMoog and it didn’t grab him, but when he played an Odyssey he saw it as a punk synth, more gritty and in your face, and right for him. (I’ve tried to find the quote, but can’t right now!)
In highschool we had an Electronic Music class (1980) and I was introduced to the ARP ODYSSEY (white and black versions). It was the only class I ever got an "A" in. It changed my life.
bravo @Alex Ball and congrats Dina @Alan R. Pearlman Foundation 🙂
One of my all time fav synths. It's so versatile and it's suuuper Phat!
Alex Ball presenting? Yeah, I'm definitely watching!
BRILLIANT on all levels @Alex Ball - ❤ARP ODYSSEY ❤
You bring out the best in anything you touch!

Woo hoo!!! Congrats ARP, and awesome work Alex! It’s a time for celebration!!’ ❤👏👏
The Odyssey was what Billie Currie used for the astonishing solo on Gary Numan's live 1979 tour version of On Broadway afaik ( hear it on UA-cam if you haven't heard it before ). One of the true great spine tingling synth solo's...
I can confirm. ua-cam.com/video/TaPzt0vK7Ok/v-deo.html
I just got a Behringer Arp odyssey.
I love the sounds you can get punch out of these.
Even though I own one , when I see a yoda like you on it , it makes me want to stop what I am doing and play with it.
Thanks for showing what's possible on this creature.
Wobba wobba ...... zingggggg . Is what I hear cutting through a mix.
How it's even possible to know so much about these amazing machines? great job!
The demo starting at 4:50 is amazing!
For me the sounds sounds like lovely early Korg synths, the perfect mix between organs and synths.
I’ve been longing for a video from Alex a couple of days now (take care Alex) and discovered this channel.
I haven’t watched any other video yet, but by the titles it seems like I’ve found a goldmine. 👍👍
Oh crap now I need to get an Odyssey. Thanks, Alex…
Thanks for exploring the nutty side of this incredible instrument. Rumour has it that the entire spacey synthesizer intro to Rush's incredible "2112" album was created with a multitracked ARP Odyssey.
Thanks Alex great stuff.
Love this! Great job, all
First synth I ever played. Don’t be Fooling Yourself! 🎶
Great video! I've been enjoying how each of the synth experts all have different favorite features they're calling out. So much to love about the Odyssey!!!
What perfect timing as I've been drooling over The Odyssey the past few months & am counting on getting a clone pretty soon. Just can't wait to get lost in tweaking all the parameters & to start using it in my music!
7:16 - start of 'Almustafa the Beloved' by George Duke, Billy Cobham, John Scofield, and Alphonso Johnson ❤
Brilliant video, Alex is the best!
Happy birthday Odyssey! Nice job Alex and Arp Foundation!
50 years old and still kicks serious butt! I'll probably need a cane or something by the time I hit the big 50 just to walk around lol.
Happy BDay to the Arp Odyssey !
The closest duophonic Analog I've got readily accessible is BS2, but I do love those oscillator modulation sounds, great to hear them demo'd on an OG Odyssey.
Great video. My go-to synth. I picked up a near mint 1978 (mk3 - filter sounds great btw:-) Oddy about ten years ago for £1500 and I've noticed that prices of the originals haven't yet gone too crazy (maybe due to all the subsequent clone releases). If you do get one I'd recommend fitting a Kenton filter control socket which really opens things up even more.
Playing 5 at the same time is a bit overkill, great that the VST gang keeps it cool with one... Great video!
Thank you Alex!
@alexball The tune at 2:43 is probably one of my favourites of all your tunes over the years. I can feel Herbie and George dripping from each note!
george who
@@remynettheim4918 Georgie Porgie Puddin' Pie.
Lol, right as you were demoing the "Odycopter" sound, a helicopter flew by my apartment and I thought "Damn, that's a really realistically sounding copter sound you got there" xD
What an amazing showcase and celebration of legend!
And hell yeah! Talking about classic analog synths sound effects... I have just spend today couple hours tweaking and fidling with CS-10 and making scifi sounds and drones for PC game im composing for.
All the best!
Great as always, Alex. Thank you!
Kraftwerk was another famous artist that paired the Mini-Moog (Rolf) + Odyssey (Florian). The famous Tomorrow’s World performance of “Autobahn” is probably the best audio visual evidence of this.
I definitely need more of your Tscherman Voedz.
Fun demo. Revolutionary gear. Thanks for the video!!!
You are making me want to buy one@@!
I love that big octave transpose switch. Unique to ARP I believe.
Thank you. All of you. 👍
ARP is such a great synthesizer and a real legend! I only have the Korg and Behringer reissues so not a vintage one but I love them to death. Its sound potential is immense! Appreciate your demo - thank you!! Can’t stress enough how essential this instrument was and still is in soul, funk, jazz and fusion music👍
Love these 'mini-docs'
Also fascinating to see how you do some noodling bonkersness with a patch.
Although controversial, the Behringer clone is utterly fantastic for those wanting this sound for the non-vintage price. The sound is so warm and, well, human somehow. I have really managed to transpose feelings in me into musical feelings using this synth, which is a truly awful way of putting it, yet completely true at the same time.
Hello Alex: This video reminds of when Rick Wakeman released his album The Six Wives of Henry the Eight. I don't think the Odyssey was used on that album, I think the 2600 was. This video reminds me of that album. Thank you.
I didn't want an Odyssey before watching this...but, now I do...
Yeah! And its such a fantastic synth. Freaky b-day!
08:42 Every episode of Space:1999! Alex, I wish I could come up with songs as fast as you do!
Yea i would like a oddssiy.
R2-D2 singing away :)
50?
Now I really feel old!
Awesome video man!
Love all those noisy and clangerous sounds you did. So cool and different.
Chris Franke fromTangerine Dream used his Mark III for bass sounds throughout the 1980s. The unit was customized with an extra output, master tune/VCO, octave knobs, and a switch controlling the CV/Gate/Pitch on & off
Those fx❤ Space:1999.
Awesome love letter Alex, hope wifey ain't too jealous
Great video! If I had the budget, I'd rush right out and get one. And a 2600 as well. No point in going off half cocked!
Nice...
I think that "odycopter" was used in "escape from new york" as effect.
@Alan R. Pearlman Foundation So you tune VCO to whatever note/sound you want, then if I press a C on keyboard it will be a C? Im confused. So the tuning of the VCo is for the "sound/pitch" only, then the keyboard is a regular tuned keyboard?
The keyboard doesn't output any specific pitches, just voltages that changes the pitch of an oscillator. To get note C on the keyboard to play a C, you have to press the key then using a tuner, change the oscillators pitch to a C with the coarse and fine sliders so then you will get a proper scale in the correct musical key when you play the keyboard. You could get the C on the keyboard to play any note depending on where the coarse and fine sliders are. It's a nightmare on the Odyssey if you catch the tuning sliders when performing, as its hard to quickly get them in tune again! Hope this helps.
Had one of these, when I was a teenager, back in the 70s.
Then my parents took it away and sold it, when they caught me smoking pot 😕
Now I have all the synthesizers I want, including 2600, and MiniMoog.
Why does this remind me on Construction Time Again?
👍😎❤
I think all musical devices need to have Alex Ball applied to them.
Herbie Hancock owned an Odyssey.
👍✌👏👏👏👏
It should have been " straight out of a tennis racket or ping pong " :D 1:40
Alex is God.
Do you get Vindypops after a Vin Da Loo!?
All jokes about Germans are the Wurst.
Can you actually get a sound of this thing or is it all wankery?
