@@pa1nted eh, toxicity is my least favorite system album. Which still makes it one of my favorite albums of all time mind you, but it is the least interesting despite being regarded the most well produced, although the production is absolutely insane for Mez/Hyp. My favorite system albums are as follows: Hypnotize Steal System Mezmerize Toxicity. I choose hypnotize as it was my entrance to the band. A friend of mine ripped a censored version for me, and I bumped it often, because it was excellent. The censorship really only affects She's Like Heroin, which is a different song entirely without the rhythmic chant of ASS. At the time hypnotized was merely just another rock album that I was listening to at the time. When I appreciated muchly but it didn't make System of a Down impressive to me yet. Next I heard toxicity, and realized I had knew this band for a decade. I always wondered who did the singles off that album I kept hearing on the radio. But the first thing I noticed about toxicity compared to hypnotizes that they didn't sound like the same band. Serj Tankian was doing most of the vocals, the rifts were punchier but infinitely less complex and while the experimentation existed, it wasn't nearly as dense as their latter 3 albums. The heavy synths on steal and mez/hyp were background flavor occasionally on toxicity, but they weren't in the foreground, like on tracks like old school Hollywood. The rhythm section of the band was consistent tho. But at the time I much preferred toxicity to hyp, and I listened to it every day until I heard music from their first album from live shows on UA-cam. Toxicity felt much more raw than hyp. Less poppy. More metal. But those live shows where they played their old stuff...These live shows taught me how to sing metal. I was a singer in a metal band shortly after listening to their self titled album. At the time I had listened to all five albums and concluded that my favorite was the self titled album. But as I got older, I found other vocal inspirations like Darroh Sudderth from Fair to Midland, Nina Simone, Bjork, Bizzy Bone, Frank Sinatra, and I got better at guitar and bass and started to notice the work.put into their last two albums. And while mez feels upbeat with it's complexities and harmonies, hypnotize feels like an iron weight. There is zero optimism in that album. Mezmerize has a song about Daron Malakian, the guitarist, going to a celebrity baseball match on psychedelics. Mesmerize hits heavy notes, both lyrically and sonically, but it doesn't have the sense of impending doom that hypnotize has throughout. The most optimistic song on hypnotize is about ejaculating on a sex workers feet. Which could be incredibly optimistic, depending on your priorities, but sonically that track still descends more than it ascends. Hypnotize feels like a bombastic descent into nothingness. Like Dante's inferno. A case for the self titled album: all that rawness I loved about toxicity is way more present on their first album, which was heavier vocally, much moshier, and less poppy than anything afterwards. It is also perhaps the most lyrically direct they've ever been with the topics they're known for. The poetic rhetoric is still there, but they let you know what it is
