Video info: System of a Down surprised everyone when they arrived in the metal scene in California in the early 90s. Their mix of traditional armenian music and metal created a dent in the contemporary music realm at the time. In June of 98 they released their debut, self titled album. And the album was so positively received that they were able to tour extensively and open concerts for bands like Slayer and Metallica. But their second album Toxicity is the one that’s considered their big break. It debuted at no. 1 on both the american and canadian charts.
This year the album celebrates it’s 20th anniversary. And so for this occasion i thought i’d take a closer look at the history, lyrics and riffs of one of the songs from the album, the title track, Toxicity. It's a killer song from the album and one of their most successful song releases. Enjoy the video!

I've always interpreted "Sacred silence" as in the womb before birth, and "Sleep" as death. So between life and death is disorder. The only reprieve we get from a chaotic life is before we're born and after we're dead.

I think the chaos of life can only stop between the sacred silence and sleep, that tiny moment where you're unconscious and emotionless where the brain loses his grasps for a moment and your soul has a glimpse how what would feel like living.
Was just going to comment that, thank you. Hearing the lyric immediately had my gears turning to when I was originally diagnosed in childhood.

I always thought this song was about the idea of existence and how in the scale of nothingness ("sacred silence") is like a blip of disorder.
The song being about the experience of having ADD makes sense.
The seeing life through a tire hub, having fragmented pieces of impressions that is hard to keep track off and combine into something cohesive. Getting lost in thought, daydreaming without a sense of outside yourself, while getting caught in the headlights of a truck.
Being "Wrong", and having to be converted. Being loud, and needing to become docile fuel for the fire of society.
Do they own "You", what you are supposed to be. "How do you own disorder?"
Getting medicated, I, the city, am becoming intoxicated. The toxicity of the city.
I can't sleep. Somewhere between the sacred silence from the thoughts that constantly arise, grabbing my attention, and falling asleep. disorder.
ADD? Is that another SOAD reference?

As a person with ADD, I think the chorus makes perfect sense. Please keep in mind that it's technically just a really confident interpretation, but here it is:
Before anitating the lyrics but without the repetition, I have a comment on the chorus in general. What he (the lyricist or the narrator) is trying to say is hard for him to say. That's why lyrics are so amazing; you can say what you need to say to someone in the most honest way even though they'll never understand or care and at least it makes sense and isn't "cringe" to you. This is reflected by the bizarre Grammer and repetition, which might even be a mediphore for studdering and rambling. Speaking of the Grammer, imma translate part of it so we're on the same page: "[And] now disorder [is] somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep!" The particular order of words they do use makes it seem like we're approaching a place or said place is being revealed to us. He turns our attention to this place, and then shows us the horror there. Before I found out what the song was about, I thought it was about pollution and what I pictured was the movement from a blissful and edvanced civilization to a hidden land of broken horrors.
"What do you own the world?"
He addresses some kind of authority figure (probably all of them) which is something people with ADD have issues with. The reason for this explained as simply as possible is, even if we care, we don't always have an easy time and succeed at paying attention. This is a he'll of a concept, so people who exert any kind of authority tend to not know how to deal with us. Which results in a lot of misunderstanding and tension as reflected by the frustration expressed in this line.
"How do you own disorder?"
He asks the addressed individual (like, the whole world, maybe) what they think he should do about it, or how they plan to deal with it, or what they would do if they had it, something like that. It has a lot of possible translations but it's relatively simple. He's basically challenging "you", your actions, and your beliefs about his condition. "How are ya gonna control me if I can't let you?" is one interpretation.
It's also a plea for help. He's demanding that who ever it is needs to pay more attention to us (get it?), and expresses how we're told that we're capable of so much more then disability, but many of us don't know how do access it.
"Now, somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep"
The meaning of sacred silence depends on who you are. Where Do you find the sacred silence? Preyer? Reading? Paralysis? Trying and failing to sleep? Attempted conversation? Notice how most of these empliy deep thought and perhaps wasted time. But it's "sacred" silence. The state this line describes is when you just let your mind run wild and lose focus on reality, and it's so consuming that it's beyond the sacred silence; it's almost sleep. This is the other world you escape to if your ADD controlles you.
The other meaning of this is line is darker. What's probably the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "sacred silence" is death. One can enterpret a disabled person as somewhere between sleeping and dead, incapable of anything, impossible to reason with, impossible to save. Imagine if someone saw you that way. Now imagine if you believed them.
"Disordor!"
The message here is in the way he sings it. He's showing us what the word can do to someone. It can leave you horrified by yourself.

Never heard the ADD thing before. I've always taken the song as just a general critique of society. Eating seeds to me has always meant just eating seeds. When you think about it a seed is something that could become something much bigger, it's the potential for life, but we just say fuck it and eat it while we watch sports. That being said I've always thought of Serg as a stream of consciousness type of lyricist, where not everything makes sense because it isn't supposed to in any real concrete way, but rather the words are just supposed to invoke feelings in the same way an abstract painting might, with the ultimate answer being provided by the audience.

I don't think that passage is that cryptic...I imagine someone with attention disorder - as someone with severe anxiety I guess I know the feeling sometimes - they feel like the brain is constantly active, and the sacred silence is perhaps the moment when the minds quietens, whether because of the drugs or not....because it definitely doesn't stop when we sleep
it seems to me - after reading the lyrics through - that maybe the song is much more personal than critical, it sounds more like the subject is trying to take control but can't...I don't know, maybe that's just me going a tangent
That's an interesting point of view. I think everyone experiences that struggle to find peace at certain points in life. Probably some people more often and intense than others. Trying to have control and then unable to let go sucks.

I'm not that familiar with the band and their history, but it just seems to me that unless it was an ironic comment, a song about a disorder wouldn't be as much about the larger world but rather the experiences of the ibdividual...and mental diseases like that bring a lot of toxicity themselves, even if you take drugs or social context out of it

daron's ADD comment is interesting, and i think works with a theory of my own in both a literal and metaphrical sense. having been a fan and heard this song countless times throughout my life, i finally got an inkling of what the lyrics *could* be getting at just recently. wasn't even listening at the time; for some reason or other the eating seeds line just popped into my head recently and i thought.... okay, hear me out:
eating seeds is a pastime activity
the toxicity of our city
a seed is like the essence of life, or at least the starting point, right? it's where life comes from, so long as it is given the opportunity to fertilise and grow. to treat something so sacred as a disposable commodity is perhaps symptomatic of the industrial culture (toxicity of our city) we live in and are encouraged to propagate, placing instant gratification above all else (the ADD theory in its most literal sense would fit snugly here).

I keep coming back to this song, year after year. It's such a masterpiece packed into such a short runtime.
For lack of a better word when it comes to music theory, the "world-building" of that intro is so iconic and impactful every single time.
It really takes you somewhere. And the drum pattern is equally as hypnotic as the opening riff. That delayed snare on the last bar gets me every time. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Ps. I think "eating seeds as a pastime activity" refers to gopnik culture of literally sitting on the floor and eating sunflower seeds for hours on end. Literally a way to pass the time in russia.

When trying to interpret the lyrics "now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep" from an ADD analysis lens, I think that "sacred silence" could reference death and sleep is referencing a passive form of living (like zoning out, being on autopilot, or similar examples). Granted this is the case, paired with the lyrics "disorder, disorder, disorder", it gets me thinking that the lyrics are referencing how the disorder (the disorder in question being ADD) makes the sufferer feel like they are just floating in a space between what feels like passive life and "sacred silence".
As an insomniac I interpret the sacred silence as the time when everybody sleeps and I keep working. To me it's the best time, because the entire world is silent, and nothing is out there about to bother you with questions, demands, or other invasions of your time. However that does not mean you don't get tired, in fact you owe yourself so much in sleep debt that you're always tired, but cognitively it does something that can work in your favor sometimes. It's like you stop trying to control or judge your ideas, and so creative ideas and/or solutions jump more easily to the frontend of your mind or something. I've noticed a similar effect when going without food for a while. No clue if this is what it's about, but you asked, so there it is. The disorder part fits pretty good as well, as for sure if I'm still awake around 06:00 things get a little chaotic, maybe even sooner already, now that I'm a little older, but like all focus will be lost and your sort of on auto-pilot. That's when you find yourself doing things like obsessing over one detail and trying to make that perfect only to find out it has no reason, or you are just staring at something for an hour lost in thought, totally forgetting where you are.

I could be completely wrong, but I remember reading that the song in some ways was about the state that Armenia was in at one point or another and that the “eating seeds” was something that older people did in Armenia.
I can’t remember exactly where I seen that, I used to look up song meanings a lot when I was younger so it probably came from back there
According to the Genius article i read that was apparently a rumor. When i was in Spain some time ago i did see a lot of people eat sunflower seeds though. So maybe it's a popular thing in some southern european contries, but not Armenia? I'm not too sure.

nice video. black sabbath has been using drop tunings since the 70s (ie: sabbath bloody sabbath is on C# standard tuning)
Yeah a few other people commented that too on here. So they're the true pioneers. But i don't think too many other bands used it. Maybe Dream Theater some decades later and some early black metal bands? Not too sure.

While they started to do more slower songs - which aren’t my favorite - at this point, Toxicity really is an amazing song.

I've always thought that polyrhythms were when for example the guitar is playing 4/4 but the drums are playing 7/4 and they would meet back up after the drums have gone through 4 measures but the guitar would need to go through 7 measures to re-align. I guess drums alone can create polyrhythms but I thought it required multiple instruments. But either way, just because a song has multiple different time signatures across the entirety of the song doesn't mean it's polyrhythmic. If every instrument is playing 6/8, then the chorus everyone switches to 4/4, that's just a time signature change, not introducing polyrhythms.

Sleep = just regular sleep
Saying that sleep and death are the only escape from the disorder of reality
If a 6/8 is like a 4/4, then what is the time sig for a fast waltz? 1-2-3-4-2-3, but with 16th notes instead of quarter notes? 6 really fast beats per measure with the snare on the 4th beat. I ask because I wrote a guitar riff in that time, but I don't know what to tell my drummer to play. He keeps trying to play the snare on the 3rd beat of each measure.
Hmm. That's a good question. I'm still learning about music theory and time signatures myself. And i don't want to give a half assed answer that i think might be right. Sounds interesting though.
very underrated
Well both the band and the song are some of the most well-known in rock and metal i'd say. Underrated? Not really.
Cool video though I think some of the theory explanations could be improved. In the opening and verse riff, the second chord features an Eb and a Bb as the song is the key of C minor as opposed to D# and A#.
I also didn't feel the description of 6/8 was entirely clear, as it's not technically the same as 4/4. Both time signatures have a strong and a weak beat, but in 6/8 these beats are subdivided into 3 and rather than 2. John Dolmayan does use contrasting rhythms (such as accenting the beats as if there were in 3/4 time at the beginning of the chorus and the snare in the verse divides the downbeat into 2 creating a syncopated feel), but his beat is pretty much in 6/8 as a whole as he is dividing up the subdivisions with the hi-hat into 3 during the verses and his chorus part is fairly straight 6/8 apart from the few bars of 3/4 at the beginning.
Hope this doesn't come across as too critical. I'm a big fan of your channel and the bands you cover. I'd love to see some videos about DEP 'Miss Machine' or Converge 'Jane Doe'!
I would more so say that two bars of 6/8 could instead be interpreted as one bar of 4/4 of 8th note triplets; so if the accent falls on the 1+4 in 6/8, it’d naturally feel like beat 1+2 of a 4/4. Common discussion I feel between drummers and guitarists; is x-song in 4/4 with triplets, in 12/8, or 6/8? Though you can argue there be a bunch of differences in interpretation etc!
What I find really interesting with Toxicity is the use of 3:2 polyrhythm. Feeling the verses in anything other than 6/8 feels unnatural and foreign to me. But the bridge with the 3:2; 3 making it feel very natural in both 6/8 and 4/4 is a sweet contrast. And then you’ve got the same guitar riff/etc for the outdo; but drums play much more of a typically defined 4/4. I dig!
And yes, like you mentioned, the duplet feel with the fills in the choruses, kind of implying a 6/4, to contrast the 6/8 following.. though I wouldn’t go as far to say as they’re actually 6/4; feels unnecessary to require a tempo change when it just as well can stay in 6/8 but with duplet grouping! Similarly to how the intro/verse guitars technically could imply the same 6/4.
@@maxadrums probably also a difference in ‘feel’ and how I would transcribe it. Writing everything in triplets, especially across multiple instruments would seem impractical and I would use 6/8. However whether you internalise that as 4/4 in triplets makes no difference to the performance.

Hey Lie, you ever heard anyone mention the connection between the songs on this album and America's 9/11? The album was either recorded or released before, but seemed to be eerily foreshadowing. It would be a controversial subject though, and one I'd approach with lots of forethought and knowledge.
Hey. Yes i have. I had written about that in the script that i made for the video. But then i decided to leave it out since it wasn't that relatable to the overall topic. It was released about a week before the attack happened. What happened, happened. And it's extremely tragic. Ironically it might've helped the band get even more attention because they got banned from radio time.

I would say this song is in 4/4 with a triplet subdivision. The snare is mainly on 2 and 4. No need to make it more complicated than it is.
I would state the opposite - the most of the grooves are in line with your most common 6/8 or 12/8 phrases. Why make it more complicated than it is by requiring artificial subdivisions (triplets) when you can skip them and naturally write it in 6/8?
Soundgarden also played in drop C, pretty sure 4th of July is that low

Wellll, about those seeds. Eating seeds (I mean, sunflower seeds) was really popular in the eastern countries in the '90s. I don't see anything cryptic here. Young people (teens and a bit older) used to hang out in the streets, just talking, laughing and eating sunflower seeds, while spitting out the rest what is left from the seed, usually on the ground. It was very awful littering and not a particularly great sight to look at.

I really enjoy you going into more of the music theory side of music, but there are a couple things that really bothered me. One of the big ones was that you used A# and D# instead of Bb and Eb. This really matters in this song because it is placed in G minor and has 2 flats.
Another thing was the way you described 6/8 time. While I understand where you're coming from, comparing it to 4/4 probably wasn't the best decision for people who don't quite understand either. (also the written bars of 4/4 were missing two beats)
Finally, according to western tradition and assumptions, the song doesn't really use any polyrhythms either (unless you wanna consider 1:2 a polyrhythm like you mentioned, then sure). The closest thing I could think of that could be considered that is the beginning section that you mentioned, but this is actually polymeter, a similar yet distinctly different concept.
I do really hope you continue this series and I love the production on the video (as always), but some of these definitely need to be researched a little more. :)

I don't agree with that 6/8 and 4/4 are "basically the same". the grouping of 3 beats in a row and a snare hit usually on the 4th gives off an entirely different feeling in any song it's used in compared to 4/4.
So with ADD when you sleep your mind is not racing with all the thoughts and distractions that can plague an ADD mind. The silence could refer to when you are awake and your mind is not racing, or you are focused effectively on a single task. These moments can be sacred and cherished as in the spaces between them there is disorder. This disorder is comprised of racing thoughts in and out of your mind that don't stay around long enough to address them properly, to the point of being overwhelmed by them, or constant distractions and inability to focus effectively and productively on a task. The disorder reference that when you are sleeping or in the "silence", the disorder (literally the last D in Attention Deficit Disorder) is not showing it's detrimental symptoms. If this line of lyrics is actually about ADD, it is a very accurate depiction of ADD. At least in my experience.
If you had ADHD or ADD it would make a lot more sense to you between the sacred silence (meaning nothing is silent for the individual suffering to the point where when you have silence in your mind sacred, and sleep) because any other time all you get is disorder your mind racing pinpointing your focus is then impossible unless you’re on Adderall pretty much meth and for whatever reason it helps a unexplainable ways to focus and organize our thoughts but that being said at least, in my opinion, it becomes more clear he’s actually talking to the doctors saying How do you want disorder not talking about the disorder add or adhd as a double entendre for the reminder in the world being in disarray

well I leaned something really cool. system of a down made a song that's apparently about having A.D.D. which I have. I never really liked the song too much when comparing it to the beautiful chop suey or my personal favorite, A.T.W.A especially when talking about songs on the album, but with everything in the video plus extra context of what the song is about, I appreciate it more. I'd disagree with the quote from Reuben. Metal is pretty diverse with fairly loose guidelines. There are so many different subgenres of metal. And yes almost all needs to use distortion, but the way they use it completely changes it. You cannot say Man in thr box by Alice n chains, Battery by Metallica, Goliath by Karnivool, Ghost of Perdition by Opeth, Blackbird by Alter Bridge, and crazy Train by ozzy all sound the same. They're all vastly different. If his quote was back from the early 90s then I can accept that since 80s hair metal dominated and every band sounded the same in that genre.
